₹1 Lakh · No Dead Stock
Wax, jars and wicks serve every scent; oil serves one. Commit the shared materials to the launch count, buy each scent's oil to its own 30 candles, and release the next stage of oil only when a scent sells through. Day-one oil exposure: ₹13,892.88.
₹13,892.88
the most this ₹1 lakh plan can lose to dead stock on day one — eight bottles of about 400 g · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What causes dead stock? Materials only one product can use — fragrance oils above all. Wax, jars and wicks serve every scent.

How should ₹1 lakh be split? Day one ₹46,718.28 (tools, test, launch stock for 240 candles); ₹35,000.00 earmarked for sales-triggered reorders; ₹18,281.72 free.

How much oil per scent? Enough for 30 candles — about 400 g at 160 g and 8% — not a kilo. Each scent earns its next bottle by selling.

When is Stage 2 released? Per scent, on a sell-through trigger you set — the example is 20 of 28 sold in 4 weeks. Each reorder costs ₹5,332.00–₹6,492.00.
The short answer
Answer: Commit shared materials to the launch count, stage the oils, keep a reorder earmark. Day one ₹46,718.28, earmark ₹35,000.00, free ₹18,281.72.
Why: If 3 of 8 scents stall, the staged plan leaves ₹3,420.70 of oil idle; buying all-in leaves ₹8,414.36 — and only ₹8,978.54 to back the scents that sell.
Triggers: Sell-through, repeat buyers, slow scents, wick changes and firm bulk orders each release — or withhold — a defined amount.

Only ₹13,892.88 of it can become dead stock — the oils. Everything else serves every scent.
₹1 lakh in four blocks. Stage 0 and Stage 1 are committed on day one; only the ₹13,892.88 of oil inside Stage 1 can become dead stock. Stage 2 is released scent by scent when sales cross a threshold you set; the free reserve is not committed at all.
Straight answer
I have ₹1 lakh to start a candle business — what should my initial raw-material inventory look like if I want to avoid dead stock?
Commit the materials every candle shares to your launch count, buy each scent's oil only to its own launch quantity, and hold the rest as cash released by sales. Dead stock in candles is almost always oil: wax, jars and wicks serve every scent, a fragrance serves one, and CSI publishes no shelf life for its oils. On ₹1 lakh that means tools and a three-wick test, then Chunks in 5 kg bags, 250 Salsa jars and about 400 g each of eight oils — 240 candles, ₹46,718.28 on day one, of which only ₹13,892.88 is scent-specific. Keep ₹35,000.00 earmarked for reorders released when a scent sells through, and ₹18,281.72 free. If three scents stall, the staged plan leaves ₹3,420.70 of oil idle; buying all-in leaves ₹8,414.36.
One line: shared materials to the launch count; oil one scent, one stage at a time.
This page's ₹1 lakh plan commits ₹46,718.28 on day one — tools, a wick test and launch stock for eight scents (240 candles) — and holds ₹53,281.72 back: ₹35,000.00 earmarked for sales-triggered reorders and ₹18,281.72 free. The shared stock is the safe part: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and the 200 ml Salsa jar at ₹29.50 a jar in 50s serve every scent.

Where dead stock comes from in a candle business

Dead stock is not too much wax. It is too much of a scent nobody reorders.

A new candle business carrying ₹1 lakh of raw materials will make some wrong guesses about what sells. The trick is to make sure the wrong guesses land on materials that can still be used. Wax, jars, wicks and stickers serve every scent you make, so if lavender stalls they simply go into coffee candles instead. A fragrance oil serves one scent only. If that scent stalls, the oil waits — and CSI publishes no shelf life for its oils, so you cannot count on it waiting gracefully. That single difference decides almost everything about how to spend ₹1 lakh without creating dead stock.

The CSI principle
Commit shared materials to the launch count. Commit scent-specific materials in stages, released by sales.
Every rupee of possible dead stock should be a rupee of oil you chose to risk — and the plan should know exactly how many.

The staged ₹1 lakh allocation

Stage 0 buys tools and a three-wick test. Stage 1 buys launch stock for eight scents at 30 candles each — two of them test candles, so 28 to sell — with wax, jars and wicks bought to the 240-candle count and each oil bought to its own 30. Stage 2 is cash: an earmark released one scent at a time when that scent sells through. Every line is a listed, in-stock CSI pack and the lines close exactly on ₹1,00,000.

Look at the two Stage 1 subtotals. Shared materials — wax, jars, wicks, stickers — are ₹31,136.00. Scent-specific oil is ₹13,892.88, or 13.9% of the budget. That ₹13,892.88 is the most this plan can ever lose to dead stock on day one, and it is spread across eight bottles of about 400 g each, not eight kilos. The example scents are Lavender, Roasted Coffee, Citrus Lemon, Fresh Strawberries, Dark Vanilla Oud, Cucumber Green Tea, Orchard Pear, Autumn — four of them (Lavender 1, Roasted Coffee 3, Citrus Lemon 7, Fresh Strawberries 13) are in the first fifteen of CSI's best-selling sort; the rest are chosen to show a price spread. Choose your own eight.

The same ₹1 lakh, bought all at once

The all-in plan is not reckless on wax and jars. It is reckless on the three scents that do not sell.

For comparison, here is the plan many makers would draw up: put the whole lakh into stock now — 60 candles of each scent, wax and jars to match, oils in bigger bottles. It costs ₹91,021.46. Now suppose three of the eight scents stall and sell only 8 candles each in the first months (a labelled hypothetical — no supplier can tell you which three).

Hypothetical: 3 of 8 scents sell only 8 candles each · value at the price paid
Dead-stock exposure, staged against all-in
Staged (this page) All-in
CSI spend on day one ₹46,718.28 ₹91,021.46
Cash left on day one ₹53,281.72 ₹8,978.54
Oil bought per scent 400 g 800 g
Oil left in the 3 stalled scents ₹3,420.70 ₹8,414.36
Wax and jars poured for nothing but the stalled scents' plan None beyond the launch count about ₹18,047.70 held until other scents use it
Ability to reorder the scents that do sell ₹35,000.00 earmarked ₹8,978.54

The all-in plan's wax and jars are not lost — other scents will use them eventually — but they are cash you cannot spend while they wait. The oil in the stalled scents is the real loss: ₹8,414.36 against ₹3,420.70. And the all-in plan has ₹8,978.54 left to back the scents that are selling, which is the moment a new business most needs cash. The ₹50,000 depth-or-breadth post shows why spreading thin is not the fix either; staging is.

The 'one kilo of everything' plan. One-kilo bottles feel like a commitment to the business, but on CSI's list most oils cost the same per gram at 100 g and 1 kg — the bigger bottle buys no discount, only exposure. Fix: buy each scent's launch oil to its launch count; buy the kilo when that scent's sales use it before it ages. The ₹75,000 pack-size post sets out that rule.

Stage 2: the release triggers

The ₹35,000.00 earmark is released one scent at a time, and only when that scent earns it. A stage-2 reorder of one scent — 30 more candles — costs between ₹5,332.00 and ₹6,492.00: its oil, 1 × 5 kg of wax, 30 jars at the 50-pack rate of ₹29.50 and wicks with stickers. The earmark therefore covers up to 5 reorders even at the dearest scent's price.

Stage 1 leaves 10 spare jars and about 112 g of spare wax after the launch pour; count those against the first reorder before buying more. The reorder-sheet post turns these triggers into a standing sheet with stock, consumption and lead time.

The Stage 1 BOM and the launch count

CSI does not publish the Salsa jar's fill. Its 200 ml is brim volume; with a labelled 0.86–0.90 g/ml approximation the brim would hold roughly 172–180 g, so this page uses an illustrative 160 g fill — weigh a test pour and redo the numbers with yours. At a working 8% — inside the 13% maximum Chunks' page states — each candle is 12.8 g of oil and 147.2 g of wax. The stack: 16 test candles counted as whole candles; 3% pour loss on wax and oil; glass breakage covered by the spare jars that rounding to packs of 50 leaves; round to real packs.

Confirm the fillWater-fill one Salsa jar to your line, weigh, convert with the labelled 0.86–0.90 g/ml approximation, then confirm with one weighed wax pour.
2
Pour 16 test candlesEach of the eight scents on two wicks. Use Eco Thin C1 and Eco Thick C2 for six scents and bring in the Cotton Braided wick for the two that behave differently, if any. CSI's Chunks page states fragrance addition at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C in its spec table.
3
Cure to one checkpointChunks' page states at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks. Use one labelled checkpoint for all sixteen.
4
Burn and record3–4 hour cycles (a commonly used working practice). Record full-pool time, pool depth, flame height, soot, mushrooming, jar warmth.
5
Buy the production wickThe winning type's packs — Eco Thin C1 as budgeted (₹1,298.00); Thick C2 or Cotton Braided if they win, the difference from the free reserve.
6
Then pour Stage 1Scent by scent, numbered, with the pour date on every base. Start the sell-through clock for each scent on its first sale.

A wick passes when it is no worse than a candle you trust on every safety line, within the jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to. CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart and no numeric safety limits.

The ₹10,000 hub sets the four allocation rules. ₹25,000: bulk or small audits CSI's price breaks; 5 deep or 15 shallow at ₹1 lakh asks the width question; ₹1 lakh with ₹25,000 kept for packaging sets aside the non-CSI costs; the ₹10,000 → ₹1 lakh growth plan stages a whole business; and safety stock for shared wax versus a slow oil is this page's logic for a running range.

Let your wrong guesses land on materials every candle can use. Risk oil one bottle at a time.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We cannot tell you which of your scents will stall, and we will not pretend to. What we can show is where on our own price list dead stock can form — almost entirely in oil — and a plan that keeps that exposure small and visible.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Jars and wicks were re-checked 4 October 2026. Tools: scale and thermometer verified 10 September 2026 (Blog 760); pouring jug pulled 24–25 September 2026. The staged allocation adds up to the rupee; reorder costs, exposures and candle counts are arithmetic shown to two decimals.

The 160 g Salsa fill is illustrative (with a labelled 0.86–0.90 g/ml approximation); the 8% load, 3% pour loss, sixteen test candles, the stage-2 earmark, the sell-through triggers and the three-stalled-scents scenario are labelled examples. Shelf life is quoted only where CSI's page states one (CSI 464 and CSI 468, 60 months). For a priced Stage 1, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documents, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What raw materials should I buy first for a candle business?
Tools and a wick test, then the materials every candle shares — wax, jars, the winning wick — to your launch count, and each scent's oil only to its own launch quantity.
How do I avoid dead stock in a candle business?
Keep scent-specific materials small and staged, and release more only when a scent sells through. Shared materials carry over to whatever sells.
Do candle fragrance oils expire?
CSI publishes no shelf life for its fragrance oils. Store them closed, cool and dark, date each bottle, and buy quantities you will use.
Does soy wax have a shelf life?
CSI's pages state 60 months in cool, dry storage for CSI 464 and CSI 468. No shelf life is stated for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or Natural Soy Pearl.
How many fragrances should I launch with ₹1 lakh?
This plan uses eight at 30 candles each. 5 deep or 15 shallow compares the alternatives.
How much of ₹1 lakh should I keep in cash?
This plan keeps ₹53,281.72 — ₹35,000.00 earmarked for reorders of scents that sell, ₹18,281.72 free for orders and surprises.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (160 g at 8% = 12.8 g oil + 147.2 g wax). The Salsa jar's fill is not published; 160 g is illustrative. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — up to 10%, shelf life 60 months in cool, dry storage; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. The 8% load, 3% pour loss, sixteen test candles, the ₹35,000.00 earmark, sell-through triggers and the three-stalled-scents scenario are labelled examples. Best-selling positions are the collection's sort order, not sales data. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
