I have 10 kg of soy wax and use 10% fragrance. How many 200 g finished candles can I produce from the wax?
55 in theory, 50 you can realistically sell. At a 10% load, a 200 g finished candle contains 20 g of fragrance oil and 180 g of wax, because the load is a share of the finished weight. The wax is the limit: 10,000 g ÷ 180 g = 55.56, rounded down to 55. Put another way, the 10 kg becomes 11.11 kg of candle once 1,111 g of oil is added. In production, allow for pour loss: with 4% as a working assumption you pour 53, and after keeping 3 test candles, 50 are sellable. Promise a client 48. To use the whole bag you need about 1,102 g of oil. Before you pour, check the wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%, so 10% is comfortably inside; CSI 464 is rated up to exactly 10%, so you would be at its ceiling. Note that 10% gives only one more candle than 8% (54) from the same bag, and costs 236 g more oil to do it.

The count at 10%

Divide 10 kg by 200 g and you get 50. Divide it by 180 g, the wax actually in each candle, and you get 55.

The question gives three numbers: 10 kg of wax, 10% fragrance, 200 g finished candles. The only one that needs converting is the candle. At 10%, 20 g of each candle is oil and 180 g is wax. Divide the wax you have by the wax per candle and round down.

Oil as a percentage of wax is the other trap. If your recipe says "add 10% oil to the wax", 180 g of wax gets 18 g of oil and the candle weighs 198 g at a true load of 9.09%, not 10%. To hit a true 10% on 180 g of wax, the oil is 180 × 0.10 ÷ 0.90 = 20 g. The 100 × 200 g at 10% fragrance guide works through the same conversion from the oil side, and the forward version of this candle shows how much wax a 100-candle order needs at 10%.

The recipe that says 10% but pours 9.09%. Many makers weigh the wax first and then add "10%" of that weight as oil. On 180 g of wax that is 18 g of oil, a 198 g candle and a true load of 9.09%. The count from the bag also changes, because each candle now takes 180 g of wax for only 198 g of candle. Neither number is a disaster, but the candle you sell is not the one you tested at "10%". Write on the recipe card which convention you use, and if it is percentage of wax, convert: oil = wax × L ÷ (1 − L).

Is 10% allowed in your wax?

The title says "soy wax", and that matters here more than on most pages in this series, because 10% is at or near the top of what CSI's data allows. Only two waxes have a published fragrance ceiling, and both are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not legal limits and not recommendations.

At the ceiling there is no room for weighing error. A scale that reads 1 g high on a 20 g addition puts the candle at about 10.4%, over the stated maximum for CSI 464. Inside a 13% ceiling, the same error is harmless. That is one reason this page uses Chunks for the worked example. Whichever wax you have, the load should be the one your burn tests support, not the highest one allowed; and for any individual oil at 10%, ask CSI on WhatsApp for its IFRA certificate before you sell, because oil-level limits are not in this data.

Weigh the oil, do not measure it
At 10% the oil is 20 g per candle, and across 53 candles that is more than a kilogram. Measuring by volume or by "a cap-full" drifts by several percent. Weigh the oil for each pour on a scale that reads to 0.1 g, and write the actual weight on the batch sheet.

What the load does to the count and the bill

A higher load stretches the wax. It does it by spending fragrance, which costs more than six times as much per gram.

From 8% to 10%, the bag makes one more candle (54 to 55), and the oil bill rises by 236 g, about ₹882.17 of Roasted Coffee. That extra candle is the most expensive one in the batch. Chunks wax costs ₹0.60 a gram and Roasted Coffee ₹3.74 at its 1 kg rate, so every gram of wax replaced by oil costs about ₹3.14 more. The load is a performance decision, and the count is a side effect; do not raise the load to stretch a bag. If throw is the goal, check wick and cure first. 1 kg of oud oil at 6%, 8% and 10% looks at the same trade from a fixed quantity of oil.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A higher load sells more fragrance oil, and fragrance is the most profitable line for any supplier. We are telling you that 10% buys you one extra candle from this bag at a real cost, and that if 8% passes your burn test, 8% is the cheaper candle to make. Use 10% because the candle needs it, not because it squeezes one more jar out of the wax.

From 55 to what you can sell

The theoretical 55 assumes nothing is lost. In practice some wax stays in the jug and the melter, some pours are topped up, and a few candles are poured purely to test. The allowances below are working assumptions; replace them with your own.

Why 4% loss here when other pages use 3%? A 200 g candle poured from a small bag is often made in several small melts, and each melt leaves a heel in the jug. For a 10 kg run, 4% is a reasonable working assumption; for a large production run with one big melter it is often lower. If you have measured your loss, use that. The oil order uses a 15 g bottle to top up: 1 kg plus 100 g leaves you 2.4 g short, and the 15 g (₹93.22) is cheaper than a second 100 g (₹390.00). Using only 100 g and larger bottles, the oil would be 1 × 1 kg + 2 × 100 g at ₹4,518.00. Raw materials per candle come to ₹262.98: 180 g of Chunks, 20 g of Roasted Coffee at the 1 kg rate, a Thick C2 wick and a White Matte jar, excluding labour, labels, lids, freight and GST. Load decides the candle. Wax decides the count.
Choose the load from a burn test, inside your wax's stated ceiling. Then divide the wax by the wax in each candle, take off loss and tests, and promise less than you can sell. Never raise the load to make the bag go further.
