I Have a 1,000-Candle Order — How Do I Calculate Whether Buying Wax Wholesale Actually Reduces COGS Enough to Matter?
Share
How much wax for 1,000 candles? 184.00 kg net at 200 g and 8%; 193.20 kg with a 5% allowance.
What real bulk steps does CSI have? Natural Soy Pearl ₹25.20/kg at 5 kg (₹4.64 a candle) and CSI 468 ₹13.00/kg at 5 kg. Chunks 10 kg is dearer per kg than 5 kg; CSI 464 is flat.
Is there a bigger lever? Rejects: 5% → 2% is worth about ₹6.92 per saleable candle — similar to a ₹38/kg wax discount.
The short answer: it matters at ₹50 a kilo and up — and only if it is the same wax
A 200 g candle at an 8% load holds 184 g of wax. So every ₹1 off a kilogram of wax takes ₹0.184 off a candle. On a 1,000-candle order, a ₹20-a-kilo wholesale discount — the kind of figure suppliers often quote — saves ₹3.68 a candle, 1.7% of the materials, and ₹3,864.00 on the whole order once the 5% allowance is included. A ₹50 discount saves ₹9.20 a candle (₹9,660.00 on the order); ₹100 saves ₹18.40 (₹19,320.00). These discounts are your hypothetical figures — CSI publishes no volume discount, and anything above its listed packs is a WhatsApp quote.
Whether that "matters" depends on two things: your margin, and whether the cheaper wax is the same wax. Against an example ₹799 selling price — one of the price points used across this series — a ₹20 discount moves gross margin on materials by 0.46% of the selling price; ₹50 by 1.15%; ₹100 by 2.30%. Useful at ₹50 and above, nice-to-have at ₹20. But if the wholesale price is for a different wax, none of that saving is real until the new wax has passed a qualification and its own wick check — and a failed test or a reject spike eats the saving quickly.
There is a lever worth comparing it with. Cutting your cosmetic reject rate from 5% to 2% lowers the material cost of each saleable candle by about ₹6.92 — roughly what a ₹38-a-kilo wax discount would do, with no new supplier and no new wax. Including rework and rejects in the true wax cost and whether a dearer wax with fewer rejects improves margin work through that side.
The COGS of one candle, wax by wax
Here is the material cost of one 200 g candle in each CSI container soy wax, at the lowest listed per-kilo rate you can buy it at for an order this size. The oil is Roasted Coffee at its 1 kg rate (₹3.74 a gram), the wick is an Eco Thin C1 from the 1,000-pack (₹5.90 each — the same per-wick price as the 10-pack), and the jar is the White Matte at ₹70.80. Labour, packaging, freight and GST are excluded.
| Wax (rate used) | Wax 184 g | Oil 16 g | Wick | Jar | Total | Wax share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soy Pearl (₹424.80/kg) | ₹78.16 | ₹59.81 | ₹5.90 | ₹70.80 | ₹214.67 | 36.4% |
| CSI 464 (₹507.40/kg) | ₹93.36 | ₹59.81 | ₹5.90 | ₹70.80 | ₹229.87 | 40.6% |
| Chunks (₹599.00/kg) | ₹110.22 | ₹59.81 | ₹5.90 | ₹70.80 | ₹246.72 | 44.7% |
| CSI 468 (₹637.00/kg) | ₹117.21 | ₹59.81 | ₹5.90 | ₹70.80 | ₹253.72 | 46.2% |
Two things stand out. The jar is the biggest single line in every row — 33.0% of the Pearl candle — and the wax is only 36.4% to 46.2% of materials. So a discount on wax is a discount on a third of your cost at most. And the gap between waxes — ₹39.04 a candle from CSI 468 to Natural Soy Pearl — is bigger than most wholesale discounts on any one of them. That is not a reason to switch wax; it is a reason to know that choosing a wax is the larger decision and buying it in bulk the smaller one. Lowest cost per kilo versus lowest cost per saleable candle explains why the cheapest wax per kilo is not automatically cheapest per candle.
Wholesale discounts, converted to the whole order
The table takes the reader's hypothetical discounts and the two real per-kilo steps on CSI's soy list, and converts each into rupees per candle, rupees on this 1,000-candle order (193.20 kg of wax including the 5% allowance), share of the Pearl candle's materials, and points of margin against an example ₹799 selling price. The real CSI steps are small because CSI's list is mostly flat above 5 kg; that is exactly why they arrive automatically once you buy 5 kg bags.
| Discount | Per candle | On this order | Share of materials | Margin points at ₹799 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹20.00/kg (reader's example) | ₹3.68 | ₹3,864.00 | 1.7% | 0.46 |
| ₹50.00/kg (reader's example) | ₹9.20 | ₹9,660.00 | 4.3% | 1.15 |
| ₹100.00/kg (reader's example) | ₹18.40 | ₹19,320.00 | 8.6% | 2.30 |
| Soy Pearl 1 kg → 5 kg (CSI, ₹25.20/kg) | ₹4.64 | ₹4,868.64 | 2.2% | 0.58 |
| CSI 468 1 kg → 5 kg (CSI, ₹13.00/kg) | ₹2.39 | ₹2,511.60 | 0.9% | 0.30 |
| Chunks 5 kg → 10 kg (CSI, −₹0.90/kg) | −₹0.17 | −₹173.88 | dearer | — |
At an example ₹799 price, the material margin on a Soy Pearl candle is 73.1%; a ₹50-a-kilo discount lifts it to 74.3%. On a CSI 468 candle the margin is 68.2% and the same discount lifts it to 69.4%. These are material-only margins — labour, packaging, freight, platform fees and GST come off afterwards — so the discount's share of your real margin is larger than these points suggest. What ₹20, ₹50 or ₹100 a kilo does to 100 kg runs the same conversion at 100 kg, and the ₹40-a-kilo saving post asks how many candles it takes to matter.
Other levers on the same order
Before you chase a wholesale wax price, compare it with the other levers that move the same COGS. Some are on CSI's list today; some are in your own process. The diagram above ranks them per candle; the table below adds what each costs you to pull.
| Lever | Per candle | On the order | What it costs to pull |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wholesale wax ₹50/kg (reader's example) | ₹9.20 | ₹9,660.00 | A quote; a delivery check; only real if the same wax |
| Rejects 5% → 2% (example) | ₹6.92 | ₹6,917.44 | Process work: temperatures, cooling, wick centring |
| Soy Pearl in 5 kg bags, not 1 kg | ₹4.64 | ₹4,868.64 | Nothing — it is CSI's listed ladder |
| Oil in 1 kg bottles, not 100 g | ₹2.59 | ₹2,592.00 | Nothing for Roasted Coffee; many CSI oils are flat above 100 g |
| Wicks in 1,000-packs | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 | Eco Thin C1 is ₹5.90 a wick at every pack size |
| Switching to a cheaper wax | up to ₹39.04 | up to ₹39,044.80 | A full qualification and wick check — 5459 |
Whatever you buy: check before the order is poured
If the wholesale offer is the same wax in a bigger quantity, the check is short: three candles from the new delivery beside three controls from your retained, approved stock, same oil lot, wick, jar and day. If the offer is a different wax, it is a qualification: at least four candles in the new wax and four controls (three burned, one on the shelf), with a full-life burn, before any production order. CSI publishes no lot numbers or batch-consistency data, so neither check can be skipped on our say-so.
| Line | Control | New wax / delivery | Pass rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pour and set: tops, glass contact | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
| Full melt pool: time, diameter, depth | ___ | ___ | Within your tolerance |
| Flame, mushrooming, soot | ___ | ___ | Safety: no worse |
| Jar-side reading at each stage | ___ | ___ | Safety: no hotter |
| Hot throw, blind | ___ | ___ | Equal or better |
| Shelf candle after cure | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
| Check | Contents | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery check (3 + 3, wax from stock) | Roasted Coffee 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g, 10 Eco wicks, 2 packs of White Matte jars | ₹1,250.22 |
| Qualification (4 + 4, Soy Pearl candidate) | Soy Pearl 1 × 1 kg, Roasted Coffee 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, 1 × 10-pack wicks, 2 packs of jars | ₹1,837.00 |
The waxes, priced for 1,000 candles
Both are shown because they carry CSI's two real per-kilo steps, not because either performs better; CSI publishes no data ranking its waxes. Order the wax your candle is approved in.

The decision rule and the order
| If the offer is… | Then | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Same wax, under about ₹20/kg off | Take it if it is free to take; do not change anything else for it | ≈ ₹3.68 a candle, ₹3,864.00 on the order |
| Same wax, ₹50/kg or more off | Take it, with a 3 + 3 delivery check | ≈ ₹9.20 a candle — about 1.2 margin points at ₹799 |
| A different wax, any discount | Qualify first, use it from the next order | Untested wax can cost more in rejects than it saves |
| Your reject rate is above about 3% | Fix rejects before chasing wax price | 5% → 2% ≈ ₹6.92 a saleable candle |
| You buy 1 kg Soy Pearl bags today | Move to 5 kg bags now | ₹4.64 a candle, listed price |
For the reader who asked: wholesale wax reduces COGS by about ₹3.68–₹18.40 a candle at ₹20–₹100 a kilo — enough to matter at ₹50 and above, provided it is the wax you already use. For this order, buy the approved wax at its lowest listed step: in Natural Soy Pearl, 3 × 50 kg + 4 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg (₹82,836.00); in CSI 468, 19 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg (₹1,24,215.00). With Roasted Coffee, wicks and jars the Soy Pearl order comes to ₹2,22,404.00 in materials. Ask on WhatsApp for a quote above the listed packs and convert whatever comes back with the table above. Buffering a 75 kg order and rounding 92 kg to real packs cover the quantity side.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A large order is where a supplier is most tempted to oversell "bulk savings". We show that the only real soy-wax step on our list is worth a few rupees a candle, that our 10 kg Chunks bag is dearer per kilo than the 5 kg, and that a reject-rate fix can beat a discount.
Wax prices are CSI live pricing re-checked on 1 October 2026; oil prices were pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026, with wick packs rechecked 25 September 2026. Per-candle costs, order totals, discount conversions and margins are arithmetic shown to two decimals.
The ₹20, ₹50 and ₹100 per-kg discounts are the reader's hypotheticals, not CSI prices; CSI publishes no volume discount. The 5% allowance, 5% and 2% reject rates, ₹799 example selling price and check practices are labelled examples. Margins shown are on materials only.
