Wedding orders · Extra fragrance for testing and wastage
A custom wedding scent is where a maker's oil budget quietly overruns. The 500 candles are easy to calculate. The trials, the samples for the family, the burn tests, the replacements and the film left in every beaker are not — unless you write each one down.
13.9%
extra oil above the 2,000 g production need, for a 500-favour wedding order with a two-oil blend · 278 g · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much extra oil for testing and wastage? On this order, 278 g on top of the 2,000 g the 500 candles need — 13.9%. Only 104 g of that is wastage; the rest is trials, approval samples, burn tests, a replacement reserve and a retained sample.

How much is bought before the client approves? Only 64 g of blend — development trials and six approval candles. That is Raat Ki Rani 1 × 50 g (₹370.00) and Sandalwood 2 × 15 g (₹93.22): ₹556.44.

And after approval? 2,214 g of blend: 1,549.8 g Raat Ki Rani (1 × 1 kg (₹6,774.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹3,387.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹370.00)) and 664.2 g Sandalwood (1 × 500 g (₹2,513.40) + 1 × 100 g (₹502.68) + 1 × 50 g (₹271.40) + 1 × 15 g (₹93.22)). ₹13,911.70.

Why blend it all at once? So candle 1 and candle 500 have the same ratio. Weighing 70:30 in small lots for every pour multiplies small weighing errors and beaker losses. Mix one master blend for the whole run, reserve and retained sample. See master blend.
The short answer
Per favour: 50 g finished candle (the jar's stated 50 g wax capacity, treated as the fill — weigh yours) at 8%: 4 g blend (2.8 g Raat Ki Rani + 1.2 g Sandalwood) + 46 g wax. Material cost ₹103.45.
Oil budget: Development trials 40 g · Client approval samples 24 g · QC burn tests in production 40 g · Replacement reserve 40 g · Retained master-blend sample 30 g · Production wastage (5%) 104 g · production 2,000 g.
Buy when: Before approval: ₹556.44 of oil. After written approval: ₹13,911.70 of oil, plus wax, 546 jars and wicks. Whole list ₹58,052.14.
500 wedding favours, custom blend — where the oil beyond 2,000 g goes Production: 500 candles × 4 g = 2,000 g +278 g extra Development trials · 40 g Client approval samples · 24 g QC burn tests in production · 40 g Replacement reserve · 40 g Retained master-blend sample · 30 g Production wastage (5%) · 104 g Blend: Raat Ki Rani 70 : Sandalwood 30 · 50 g favour at 8% · extra oil = 13.9% of production need Only development and approval oil is bought before the client signs off; everything else after.
The black bar is the oil the 500 favours contain. The shaded strip to its right is everything else the order consumes before a single favour reaches a guest — 278 g in all. Wastage is only one of six lines; most of the extra is deliberate and planned.
Straight answer
I have a 500-candle wedding order with a custom fragrance — how much extra fragrance oil should I buy for testing and production wastage?
Budget each kind of extra separately rather than adding one round percentage. For 500 favours of 50 g at an 8% load, the candles themselves need 2,000 g of blend. On top of that: development trials to find the ratio (40 g), six approval candles for the family (24 g), ten burn tests through production (40 g), a ten-candle replacement reserve (40 g), a sealed retained sample of the final blend (30 g) and a 5% wastage allowance on the production blend (104 g). That is 278 g extra — 13.9% over the production need. Only the trial and approval oil is bought before sign-off: Raat Ki Rani and Sandalwood in small packs for ₹556.44. After written approval, buy the rest in one order (₹13,911.70) and mix the whole run as one master blend. CSI doesn't formulate custom fragrances; a "custom" wedding scent here means your own blend of two CSI oils, and the IFRA documents for each oil are available on WhatsApp. If the couple hasn't chosen yet, start there.
One line: list every reason oil leaves the bottle — then only wastage is a percentage.
Before approval: Raat Ki Rani 1 × 50 g (₹370.00) + Sandalwood 2 × 15 g (₹93.22) = ₹556.44 — enough for three blend ratios, a load round and six approval favours. After approval: ₹13,911.70 of oil for the master blend.
Buy Raat Ki Rani

The oil budget, line by line

"Add ten percent" is not a budget. It is a guess with a round number on it.

The order: 500 wedding favours for a November–February wedding, each a Heart Cutout Velvet Jar in red, with a scent the couple wants to feel like theirs. You propose a blend of Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) and Sandalwood, poured in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 8%. The jar is sold with a stated 50 g wax capacity; we treat 50 g as the finished candle, so each favour is 4 g of blend and 46 g of wax. Weigh one of yours to confirm.

Of the 278 g beyond production, only 104 g is wastage in the sense of oil lost to beakers, bottles and pour jugs. The rest is oil that goes into a candle on purpose: one you burn to check the wick, one a family member sniffs in September, one you keep in a drawer so that when the couple's cousin orders the same favours next year you can match them. Treat those as planned uses, not losses. The difference matters when the client asks why the oil line on your quote is higher than 500 × 4 g.

The wastage allowance here is 5%, at the top of the usual 3–5% working range, because a blend passes through more vessels than a single oil: two bottles into a blending jar, the blending jar into a pouring jug. Each transfer leaves a film. On a single-oil order you could use 3%. Neither figure is measured by CSI; they are planning assumptions to adjust once you have weighed your own losses on a run.

Weigh your wastage once, then stop guessing
On your next pour, weigh the oil bottle before and after, and weigh the candles that came out of it. The difference, divided by what went into candles, is your real wastage rate for that set-up. Two or three runs give you a number to put in place of the 5% here.

Development trials: how much oil a blend costs to find

A two-oil blend has two variables: the ratio and the load. Round one tests the ratio: 80:20, 70:30 and 60:40, two favours each at 8% — one to burn, one to smell cold. That's six candles and 24 g of blend. Round two tests the load on the winning ratio: two favours at 7% and two at 9% — 16 g more. Ten candles and 40 g of blend to arrive at a formula you can defend.

Trial oil per favour · 50 g candle
What each trial candle takes from each bottle
Trial Load Blend per candle Raat Ki Rani Sandalwood × candles
80:20 8% 4.0 g 3.2 g 0.8 g 2
70:30 8% 4.0 g 2.8 g 1.2 g 2
60:40 8% 4.0 g 2.4 g 1.6 g 2
70:30 7% 3.5 g 2.45 g 1.05 g 2
70:30 9% 4.5 g 3.15 g 1.35 g 2

Weighing 0.8 g of oil into a 50 g candle needs a scale that reads to 0.1 g, or you mix a small trial blend first (say 20 g at each ratio) and weigh 4 g of that. The second method is easier and more accurate, and the leftovers of each trial blend are still usable — keep them labelled. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load (the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit), so the 9% trial is well inside it.

If the couple prefers a single oil after all, trials shrink to a load round. That's cheaper to develop and easier to reproduce. For comparison, the post-approval quantity as straight Jasmine would be 2 × 1 kg (₹3,923.00) + 2 × 100 g (₹430.00) + 1 × 15 g (₹103.00) = ₹8,809.00, against ₹13,911.70 for the blend. The blend is dearer here because Raat Ki Rani is ₹6.77 a gram at 1 kg against Jasmine's ₹3.92. The per-favour oil cost of the blend is ₹25.00.

The trial that nobody wrote down. Three ratios poured, the couple loves the middle one — and nobody labelled which jar was which. Label every trial candle on the base with ratio, load, date and wick before it sets. The whole development budget is wasted if you can't say which candle won.

One master blend for the whole run

Blend once. Pour many times.

Once the ratio is approved, weigh the whole post-approval quantity into one clean, dry, closable container: 1,549.8 g of Raat Ki Rani and 664.2 g of Sandalwood, 2,214 g of blend. Mix it thoroughly. Pour the 30 g retained sample into a small sealed bottle, label it with the ratio and date, and put it away. Every production pour then weighs blend, not two oils. That removes a whole class of error: a slightly heavy hand on the Sandalwood in batch seven.

It also explains why the wastage allowance sits on the production blend: the blending container keeps a film, and so does every pouring jug that takes blend from it. If you blend in small lots per pour instead, you lose a film in the blending beaker every time, and the real wastage climbs well above 5%. Keeping batches identical covers the same principle for wax and colour.

1
Buy the trial oils in small packsRaat Ki Rani 1 × 50 g (₹370.00) and Sandalwood 2 × 15 g (₹93.22). Mix small labelled trial blends at each ratio.
2
Pour and cure the ratio round, then the load roundTen favours, each labelled. Burn one of each pair, smell the other cold.
3
Send six approval favoursCouple, both families, planner. Ask for the decision in writing: ratio, load, jar colour, quantity, date.
4
Buy the post-approval oil in one order1,549.8 g and 664.2 g. Ask CSI on WhatsApp to confirm stock before you tell the couple the date is safe.
5
Mix one master blend, bottle the retained sample2,214 g in one container. 30 g sealed and labelled for the future.
6
Pour with QC burns every 50Ten QC favours burned across the run. If one tunnels or smokes, you find it with most of the run still ahead.
7
Pour the ten reserve favours lastFrom the same master blend. They cover breakage in transit and the guest-list change that always comes.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. We'd sell more if we told you to round up to two 1 kg bottles of each oil. You don't need to: the post-approval list above covers production, QC, reserve, a retained sample and 5% wastage for ₹13,911.70. Raat Ki Rani is ₹6.77 a gram at both 500 g and 1 kg, and Sandalwood ₹5.03 a gram from 100 g up — bigger bottles are not cheaper per gram for either. Round up only if you expect to sell this blend again.

What to buy before and after approval

Weddings change: the colour scheme moves from red to ivory, the guest list grows, a family elder dislikes jasmine. So the split is deliberate. Before approval, buy only what finds the formula and persuades the family. After approval — and in writing — buy everything for production in one go.

Before approval Sandalwood 19.2 g 2 × 15 g (₹93.22) 30 g ₹186.44
After approval Raat Ki Rani 1,549.8 g 1 × 1 kg (₹6,774.00) + 1 × 500 g (₹3,387.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹370.00) 1,550 g ₹10,531.00
After approval Sandalwood 664.2 g 1 × 500 g (₹2,513.40) + 1 × 100 g (₹502.68) + 1 × 50 g (₹271.40) + 1 × 15 g (₹93.22) 665 g ₹3,380.70
Total oil 2,278.0 g 2,295 g ₹14,468.14

Rounding to packs adds a little more: you buy 2,295 g for a need of 2,278 g. The pre-approval packs leave about 5 g of Raat Ki Rani and 11 g of Sandalwood unused, which can go into the master blend or a test for another client. In total, the oil you buy is 14.8% above the production need. That is the honest answer to the title: plan on roughly 14–15% more oil than the favours contain on a blended custom order like this one, and know exactly what each part of it is for.

The CSI principle
Wastage is a percentage. Everything else is a count.
Trials, approvals, burn tests, reserves and retained samples are candles you decided to make. Count them. Only the film left in bottles and jugs deserves a percentage, and even that should come from your own weighing.

The rest of the favour

The favour needs 46 g of wax, a wick and the heart jar. Poured units are 536 (500 favours, 10 QC, 10 reserve, 6 approval, 10 trials), so wax is 25.89 kg with a 5% allowance: 2 × 10 kg (₹5,999.00) + 1 × 5 kg (₹2,995.00) + 1 × 1 kg (₹599.00) = ₹15,592.00. Jars: 546 with ten spare, bought as 54 × 10 (₹450.00) + 1 × 5 (₹225.00) + 1 × 1 (₹45.00) = ₹24,570.00 for 546. Wicks: 1 × 500 (₹2,950.00) + 1 × 50 (₹295.00) + 1 × 10 (₹59.00) = ₹3,304.00.

If the wedding favours are only part of your season, the neighbouring questions are how to cost the first quote (a 100-candle inquiry), how much inventory a 500-piece run needs before the first pour (500 custom candles), how much extra wax Diwali volumes call for (1,000 Diwali candles) and what buffer a fixed wedding date deserves (strict delivery dates).

Two related questions sit next to this one. If the wedding is booked months ahead, protecting your quoted price covers what happens if oil prices move before production. And if the order is large enough that the oil runs to several kilos of a single scent, calculating kilograms before ordering and testing the bulk batch against your sample take over.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's convenient answer would be "round up to whole kilos". This page itemises the extra oil instead, shows that bigger bottles are not cheaper per gram for either oil in the blend, and tells you to buy only trial quantities before the couple signs off. CSI does not formulate custom fragrances; blending here is the maker's own.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026; the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar price is from the catalogue pull of 24–25 September 2026; wick and centering-device prices are the Blog 760 figures verified 10 September 2026. Pack combinations use in-stock sizes only, and every figure is arithmetic shown so you can check it.

The 50 g fill, 8% load, 70:30 ratio, trial plan, ten QC and ten reserve candles, 30 g retained sample and 5% wastage are working assumptions for this example. Replace them with your own. Frequently asked questions

how much extra fragrance oil should I buy for candle testing
Count test candles rather than adding a percentage. For a two-oil blend in 50 g favours, ten trial candles (three ratios and a load round) used 40 g and six approval candles 24 g — 64 g before approval. A single oil needs fewer trials.
how much fragrance oil is wasted in candle making
Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns as a working assumption — the film left in bottles, beakers and jugs. Blends sit at the top of the range because they pass through more vessels. Weigh your own losses on a run to replace the assumption.
how much fragrance oil for 500 wedding favours
For 50 g favours at 8%, 2,000 g goes into the favours. With trials, approval samples, QC burns, a reserve, a retained sample and 5% wastage, this order uses 2,278 g — 13.9% more.
can I make a custom candle fragrance by blending two oils
Yes — weigh the oils by ratio and test at a few ratios and loads. CSI doesn't formulate custom fragrances; the blend is yours. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for the IFRA certificate of each oil you blend, and keep the total load within your wax's stated maximum (13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464).
should I keep a sample of the fragrance blend after a wedding order
Yes. A sealed, labelled 20–30 g of the final master blend lets you match a repeat order or a replacement. It is one of the cheapest lines on the oil budget and the only way to prove what you poured.
what is the fill weight of a 50 g heart candle jar
The Heart Cutout Velvet Jar is listed with a 50 g wax capacity. We treat that as the finished candle weight; weigh one filled to your selling line to confirm before you order. It is in stock in red; the white version is out of stock on the pull date.
Budget the extra, then blend once
Trials and approvals before sign-off. One master blend after it.
For 500 heart-jar favours in a Raat Ki Rani and Sandalwood blend: ₹556.44 of oil to find and approve the scent, ₹13,911.70 to produce it, ₹58,052.14 for everything. Send us your ratio and quantities and we will confirm stock.
