500–1,000 Candle Orders · Custom Colour
A custom colour is found in trials, not in a dose chart — CSI does not publish dye doses. Plan the trial candles and a check pour for every batch, buy trial dye in the smallest packs, and size the production dye from the tin the client approves.
+4.5% wax
21 trial tins + 9 check pucks = 1.89 kg on a 500-favour order · trial dyes ₹722.00 · CSI pricing re-checked 4 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much extra wax for colour trials? On this order, 1.89 kg: 21 full trial tins plus a 20 g check puck for each of 9 batches — about 4.5% on top of production.

How much dye should I buy? For trials, the smallest packs: ₹722.00 here. For production, your approved dose × 42.15 kg of wax — every 0.1 g/kg is 4.21 g.

What dose does CSI recommend? No dose is published in this data. Start at each dye's product page guidance and bracket around it in round 1.

Which colours are in stock? Liquid red, blue, purple, brown and black; red, yellow, blue and brown chips. Green and yellow liquid and green chips are out of stock.
The short answer
Answer: Allow 21 trial tins in four rounds and one 20 g check puck per production batch: 1.89 kg of extra wax on 500 × 85 g. Buy trial dye in 15 g packs; production dye after approval.
Why: Oil tint, pour depth and cure all move a shade, so trials must be full candles with the real oil at the real load, approved after cure. CSI publishes no dye doses.
Scale: Production dye = approved dose (g per kg, from your trial tin) × coloured wax. Two dyes, two sums. Put it on the procurement sheet.
A custom wedding colour: four trial rounds, then a check puck every batch Example: 500 × 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins · CSI 468 · Raat Ki Rani 8% · red base + brown toner (dye doses are not published) ROUND 1 · bracket 3 red steps × 2 toner steps 6 tins ROUND 2 · narrow 3 shades × 2 tins 6 tins ROUND 3 · client 3 sent to client 3 kept as reference R4 · 3 aged + lit approve on a cured tin 9 tins PRODUCTION 9 batches of ~5 kg wax 1 check puck (20 g) each match to the kept reference before filling a single tin 180 g of wax Colour development + batch matching: 21 trial tins + 180 g of pucks = 1.89 kg of wax on top of production (4.5%)
Four trial rounds in the real 85 g tin with the real oil — bracket, narrow, client set, age and light — then a check puck from every production batch matched against the kept reference tin. Grey tones stand for shades only. Trial counts, the 5 kg batch and the 20 g puck are labelled working practices; CSI publishes no dye doses.
Straight answer
I have a 500-piece wedding order in a custom colour — how much extra dye and wax should I allow for colour-development trials?
Plan the trial candles, not the dye. CSI does not publish dye doses, so the dye quantity is something your trials discover. Allow four rounds of full trial candles made with the real oil at the real load — 6 to bracket, 6 to narrow, 6 for the client (three sent, three kept), 3 to age and burn — 21 tins, plus a 20 g check puck from each of about 9 production batches. On 500 × 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins in CSI 468 that is 1.89 kg of extra wax, about 4.5% over production. Buy trial dye in the smallest packs — red and brown liquid plus a yellow chip, ₹722.00 (green and yellow liquid are out of stock). After the client approves a cured tin, convert it to grams per kilo and multiply by 42.15 kg of coloured wax: every 0.1 g/kg is 4.21 g of dye. Buy all production dye in one lot.
One line: trial in the real candle, buy trial dye small, buy production dye once the colour is signed off.
For a 500-piece wedding order in a custom colour in Golden Aluminium Tins (85 g published fill), allow 21 trial tins and a 20 g check puck for each of 9 production batches — 1.89 kg of extra wax, about 4.5% on top of production — and buy dye for the trials only: the smallest bottles of two or three colours, ₹722.00. Production dye is bought after the client approves, in a quantity set by the dose your trials found.
Shop candle dyes and wax

The short answer: trial tins, check pucks, and dye bought twice

Nobody can tell you how much dye a custom colour takes before you have made it. That is exactly why the trials need their own line.

A custom wedding colour is a target the client sets — a swatch from the invitation, a fabric sample, a photograph of the décor. Getting there takes trials, and the trials consume real materials: wax, fragrance, wicks and containers as well as dye, because a colour judged in a bare wax puck will not look the same in the finished candle. Fragrance oils carry their own tint and can shift a shade; the depth of the pour and the finish of the surface change how a colour reads; and soy-based waxes commonly look different warm, freshly set and fully cured. So the trial candle has to be the real candle, made the real way, in small numbers.

CSI does not publish dye doses — how much of each liquid dye or chip colours a kilo of wax — and the product pages are the place to start. That has two consequences for the order. First, the dye for the trials is bought in the smallest listed packs, because you do not yet know how much you will use. Second, the dye for production is bought after the client approves a colour, in a quantity you calculate from the dose your trials settled on. Between those two purchases sit the extra wax and materials for the trials themselves and for a small check pour at the start of every production batch. On this order that is 21 trial tins and 9 check pucks: 1.89 kg of wax, roughly 4.5% more than production alone.

The CSI principle
Trial in the real candle, buy trial dye small, buy production dye once the colour is signed off.
The dye dose is a result of the trials, not an input to the order. Everything else on this page follows from that.

The production BOM before any colour allowance

The example is 500 wedding favours in Golden Aluminium Tins, one of only two CSI containers with a published fill — 85 g. In Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 with Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) at 8%, each tin holds 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax. CSI's product page for CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C, pour at 58–60°C and fragrance load up to 13%. A 3% reject allowance (a labelled working assumption) makes 500 saleable favours into 516 production tins. In a tin, the colour shows on the top surface; in clear glass it would show through the wall as well, which makes trials more demanding still.

500 × 85 g tins · 8% · rejects and pour loss are labelled assumptions
Production quantities, colour not yet included
Line Rule Quantity
Saleable favours The order 500
Production tins 500 ÷ (1 − 0.03) → up 516
Wax 516 × 78.2 g × 1.04 pour loss 41.97 kg
Oil 516 × 6.8 g × 1.04 3.65 kg
Wicks 516 + 1% damaged 522
Dye Dose × wax — dose unknown until the trials after approval

That last row is the reason this post exists. Every other line can be calculated today; the dye line cannot, and neither can the extra wax for getting there unless you plan the trials. The next two sections do that — first the trial rounds, then the batch check that keeps 500 tins the same colour.

Planning the colour trials as candles, not as drops

Plan the number of trial candles. The amount of dye per candle is what the trials are for.
Labelled working practice · every trial is a full 85 g tin with the real oil at the real load
Four trial rounds, 21 tins
Round Purpose Tins What you record
1 · Bracket Three steps of the base colour × two steps of the toner, spaced widely 6 Dye weighed to 0.01 g per tin (or drops counted the same way every time), photo in daylight
2 · Narrow The two closest shades from round 1 plus one between them, poured twice 6 Same; the duplicate shows whether your weighing repeats
3 · Client set The chosen shade: three sent to the client, three kept as your reference 6 Approval in writing against a numbered tin you also hold
4 · Age and light The approved shade, cured and kept on a shelf with daylight, one lit 3 Colour at your cure checkpoint and after storage; burning look
Total 21

Twenty-one tins sounds like a lot for a 500-piece order. It is 4.2% of the order, and each tin carries about ₹134.40 of CSI material, so the whole trial programme costs roughly ₹2,822.36 in wax, oil, wicks, tins and stickers before dye. The alternative — approving from a puck, then discovering in the first production batch that the oil has pulled the shade warmer — costs a remelt of a 5 kg batch.

1
Fix everything except colour firstWax, oil, load, wick, tin, pour temperature and cooling spot are the production ones. If the wick or load is still changing, finish that test first — colour results do not survive a formula change.
2
Start each dye at its product page's guidanceCSI does not publish doses in this data. Read the dye's product page for its starting amount, and treat that as the middle step of your round 1 bracket, with a lower and a higher step either side.
3
Weigh dye, do not estimate itUse a scale that reads to 0.01 g for liquid dye in small batches, or count drops from the same bottle with the same technique. Write the amount per kilo of wax beside every tin, because that is the number you will scale.
4
Judge in the light the guests will seeCompare against the client's swatch in daylight and under warm indoor light, at the same distance. Photograph both and keep the photos with the tin numbers.
5
Get approval on a cured tinSend the client a tin that has cured to your checkpoint, not a fresh one. Keep its twin. That kept tin is the reference every production batch is matched against.
6
Convert the approved tin to a dose per kiloDivide the dye you used by the wax in that tin (78.2 g) and multiply by 1,000. That g/kg figure, and only that, sizes the production dye.
Approving a colour from a wax puck. A small puck of wax and dye, without fragrance, poured thin and judged the same day, is the commonest shortcut — and the most expensive, because the oil, the depth of the tin and the cure can each move the shade. Fix: every trial is a full tin with the real oil at the real load, approved after cure. If you must rough out a colour with pucks first, treat them as round 0 and do not count them as approval.

Which CSI dyes you can actually trial with this week

CSI's liquid dyes and dye chips are listed in a handful of colours, and two of the liquids — green and yellow — are out of stock on the pull; green chips are out of stock too, and black chips had a single unit in stock, so do not plan around them. For a custom colour that needs a warm yellow component, the in-stock route is yellow candle dye chips at ₹250.00. For a dusty rose — a common wedding request, used here as the example — the route is a red base with a brown toner. Mica (white or green, from ₹57.82 for 10 g) is commonly cautioned against inside the melt pool because pigments can clog a wick; many makers keep it to surface decoration, so test before using it in a burning candle.

For the trials, buy the smallest pack of each colour you will actually use: here red and brown liquid at ₹236.00 each and a yellow chip at ₹250.00 in case the client's swatch is warmer than expected — ₹722.00. Brown liquid also shows a 100 g listing whose price looks like a listing error, so we do not quote it and you should not plan around it. Confirm on WhatsApp if you need a larger brown pack.

One dye lot for the whole order
Once the colour is approved, buy all the production dye in one order, so the 500 tins are coloured from the same lot. Keep a few grams aside as a retained sample, with the order date written on the bottle. CSI does not publish dye lot numbers; your own record is the control.

Turning the approved trial into a production dye quantity

When the client signs off, your round 3 tin gives you a dose in grams of dye per kilo of wax. The production quantity is then simple arithmetic: dose × production wax (plus the check pucks). On this order production wax is 41.97 kg and the pucks add 0.18 kg, so every 0.1 g/kg of your measured dose means 4.21 g of dye for the whole run. The table shows the arithmetic at a few round values. They are columns for multiplication, not recommended doses — your number comes from your trial tin.

Arithmetic only · 42.15 kg of coloured wax · the dose is YOURS from the approved trial
Production dye = your dose × coloured wax
If your approved dose is Dye for production 15 g bottles Or
0.25 g per kg 10.5 g 1 —
0.50 g per kg 21.1 g 2 —
1.00 g per kg 42.1 g 3 1 × 50 g
2.00 g per kg 84.3 g 6 2 × 50 g

Two rules keep this honest. If your colour uses two dyes, do the sum for each one separately with its own dose. And buy production dye with a margin for the batch-matching adjustments described next — a labelled 10–20% is a reasonable working buffer for dye alone, because small corrections are part of the method, and dye is a small cost beside the wax it colours.

Keeping 500 tins the same colour: the check puck

A 500-tin order is poured in batches. At a labelled example of about 5 kg of wax per melt, production is 9 batches. Each batch is coloured from the dose, and each batch can drift: a slightly different weighing, a different melt temperature, a fresh bottle. The cheapest insurance is a check puck — 20 g poured from every coloured batch before any tin is filled, cooled quickly and set beside the kept reference tin. If it matches, pour. If it is light, add a weighed correction and pour another puck. That is 9 × 20 g = 180 g of wax over the order, and it is the line most often forgotten.

In packs, the colour allowance moves the CSI 468 order from 4 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg (₹26,780.00) to 4 × 10 kg + 4 × 1 kg (₹28,080.00) — ₹1,300.00 of wax for a colour the client actually approved. Two pricing notes. CSI 468 is ₹650.00 a kilo at 1 kg and ₹637.00 at 5 and 10 kg, so the bulk of the wax is in 10 kg bags with 1 kg top-ups. Raat Ki Rani is ₹6.77 a gram at 500 g and 1 kg, ₹7.00 at 100 g and ₹8.67 at 15 g; the list uses the cheapest cover. The tins are ₹30.00 each in the pack of 12, so 537 tins round to 540.

Buy now, buy after the client approves the colour

Colour trials split the order cleanly. Now: enough wax, oil, tins, wicks and stickers for 21 trial tins, plus the trial dyes — and the wick test if the wick is not settled (the single-wick post covers that). After approval: the production wax and oil balance, the remaining tins, the production wick pack and the production dye in one lot. The tins can come forward if you prefer — they are fixed by the design and do not age — but the dye must wait, because its quantity does not exist until the trials finish.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A 100 g bottle of liquid dye looks like the professional buy for a 500-piece order, and we would be glad to sell it. Before approval it is a guess. The 15 g bottle at ₹236.00 may well colour the whole order if your approved dose is low — on this order a hypothetical dose of 0.25 g/kg would need only 10.5 g — or it may need several. Buy the 15 g, finish the trials, then do the sum.
The November–February wedding season starts right after Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026. Colour approval is the slowest step in a custom-shade order, because it waits on cure time and the client. Pour round 1 this week. Send us the swatch description, the container and the order size on WhatsApp and we will check which dye colours are in stock that day; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp and no discount figure is published.

The rest of the 500–1,000 candle cluster

Colour is one allowance on a large order. Jar breakage and wick allowances size two more; the new-fragrance post applies the same buy-after-approval logic to oil; emergency remakes covers replacement stock on a deadline; the buffer-logic post explains why dye, wax and glass buffers differ; and the procurement sheet brings them together. For a smaller pilot of the same idea, the pastel-pink rose post tests load, dye and wick together.

The dye quantity is the answer the trials give you. Plan the trial candles; let the approved tin size the dye.

Frequently asked questions

How much dye do I need for 500 candles?
Your approved dose (grams per kilo of wax, from your trial) × the coloured wax. For 500 × 85 g at 8% that is about 42.15 kg of wax, so every 0.1 g/kg is 4.21 g of dye.
How many colour test candles should I make?
A working plan is four rounds: 6 to bracket, 6 to narrow, 6 for client approval and reference, 3 to age and burn — 21 in all, each a full candle with the real oil.
Does fragrance oil change candle colour?
It can. Fragrance oils carry their own tint and some can shift a shade over time. CSI publishes no discolouration data, so trial with the production oil at the production load.
What is the dye dosage for soy wax?
CSI does not publish dye doses in this data. Start at the dye's product page guidance and bracket above and below it in your first trial round.
Is yellow candle dye in stock at CSI?
Liquid yellow and liquid green are out of stock on the pull, and green chips too. Yellow dye chips are listed at ₹250.00; ask on WhatsApp for current stock.
How do I keep colour consistent across batches?
Weigh dye per kilo, buy production dye in one lot, and pour a 20 g check puck from every coloured batch to match against a kept reference candle before filling.
Trial, approve, then buy
Buy the trial dyes this week. Buy the production dye once — after the client approves a cured candle.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of finished weight (85 g at 8% = 6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax). The 85 g tin fill is published by CSI. The 8% load, 3% rejects, 4% pour loss, 1% damaged wicks, four trial rounds (21 tins), the 5 kg batch, the 20 g check puck and the 10–20% dye buffer are labelled working practices. The dose table multiplies illustrative values and recommends none. CSI publishes no dye doses, dye lots or discolouration data; mica caution is general practice. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
