Cost per Candle · 8% → 10%
Two percentage points sounds small. In a 200 g candle it is 4 g more oil and 4 g less wax in every jar. Multiply by a production run and it becomes kilos of fragrance and thousands of rupees. Here is the exact figure for four real oils.
₹18,490.00
extra cost of 1,000 × 200 g Lavender candles at 10% instead of 8% · ₹18.49 per candle · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much does 8% to 10% add per candle? In a 200 g candle, 4 g more oil and 4 g less wax. Net extra cost = 4 g × (oil ₹/g − wax ₹/g). With Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: Lavender ₹18.49, Pumpkin Spice ₹18.84, Vanilla Bean ₹28.19, Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹9.88 — oil at 1 kg rates.

What about 100, 500 and 1,000 candles? Lavender: ₹1,849.00, ₹9,245.00 and ₹18,490.00. Vanilla Bean: ₹2,819.00, ₹14,095.00 and ₹28,190.00. The batch table has all four oils.

How much more oil do I need to buy? 4 g a candle: 400 g more per 100 candles, 2 kg per 500, 4 kg per 1,000 — plus your wastage allowance. At 1,000 candles that is 20 kg of oil instead of 16 kg before wastage.

Can every wax take 10%? Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%, so 10% has headroom. CSI 464 is rated up to 10% — 10% is its stated maximum, with no room above. For other waxes no ceiling is quoted in this data; check the product page.
The short answer
Formula: Extra cost per candle = weight × 2% × (oil ₹/g − wax ₹/g). Batch extra = that × candles. The wax you no longer use offsets a little of the oil.
1,000 candles: Lavender ₹18,490.00 · Pumpkin Spice ₹18,840.00 · Vanilla Bean ₹28,190.00 · Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹9,880.00 extra, 200 g at 1 kg oil rates with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks.
Ceilings: Chunks up to 13% · CSI 464 up to 10% (wax makers' stated formulation maximums). Cutting load instead covers the reverse decision.
8% → 10%: the extra cost of the same production run, by oil and volume ₹1,849 100 ₹9,245 500 ₹18,490 1,000 Lavender ₹18.49/candle ₹1,884 100 ₹9,420 500 ₹18,840 1,000 Pumpkin Spice ₹18.84/candle ₹2,819 100 ₹14,095 500 ₹28,190 1,000 Vanilla Bean ₹28.19/candle ₹988 100 ₹4,940 500 ₹9,880 1,000 Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹9.88/candle Bars: extra cost for 100, 500 and 1,000 candles of 200 g. Oil at its 1 kg rate; 4 g less Luxury Soy Wax Chunks per candle netted off.
The extra cost grows in a straight line with volume, and its slope is set by the oil price. A dearer oil like Vanilla Bean costs half as much again as Lavender to move up two points. The wax offset is small — 4 g of Chunks is under ₹2.40 a candle — but it is real and it is included.
Straight answer
I increased my fragrance load from 8% to 10% — how much does that increase my cost per candle across 100, 500 and 1,000 candles?
In a 200 g candle, 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax; 10% is 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. So each candle gains 4 g of oil and loses 4 g of wax, and the net extra cost is 4 g × (oil ₹/g − wax ₹/g). With Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹0.60 a gram and Lavender at its 1 kg rate of ₹5.22, that is ₹18.49 a candle: ₹1,849.00 across 100 candles, ₹9,245.00 across 500 and ₹18,490.00 across 1,000. A dearer oil scales faster — Vanilla Bean adds ₹28.19 a candle, ₹28,190.00 per 1,000 — and a value oil like Eucalyptus Spearmint only ₹9.88. You will also buy 25% more oil: 4 kg more per 1,000 candles before wastage. Check the wax: Chunks are rated up to 13%, but CSI 464 is rated up to 10%, so 10% is already its stated maximum. And a higher load is not automatically a stronger candle; wick and cure matter too. If you are weighing the opposite move, the load-reduction post prices it.
One line: every two points of load in a 200 g candle is 4 g of oil — multiply by your oil's price per gram and your run size.
Lavender sits at the top of CSI's best-selling sort on the pull date and is priced almost flat from 50 g up: ₹5.40 a gram at 100 g, ₹5.22 at 1 kg. At 10% a 200 g candle holds 20 g — ₹104.42 of oil at the kilo rate, and a 1 kg bottle scents 50 candles instead of 62.
Shop Lavender

Per candle: 4 g more oil, 4 g less wax

A load change is not an extra ingredient. It is a swap: oil in, the same weight of wax out.

Fragrance load is a share of the finished candle, so a 200 g candle stays 200 g at 10%. What changes is the split. At 8% the candle is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax; at 10% it is 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. The extra cost is therefore the price of 4 g of oil minus the price of the 4 g of wax you no longer pour. With Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo that offset is ₹2.40 a candle — small, but it belongs in the sum.

Per-candle cost at 8% and 10%, four oils

Lavender (₹5,221.00) ₹5.22 ₹83.54 ₹104.42 ₹2.40 ₹18.49 ₹270.46 → ₹288.94
Pumpkin Spice (₹5,310.00) ₹5.31 ₹84.96 ₹106.20 ₹2.40 ₹18.84 ₹271.88 → ₹290.72
Vanilla Bean (₹7,646.00) ₹7.65 ₹122.34 ₹152.92 ₹2.40 ₹28.19 ₹309.26 → ₹337.44
Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3,068.00) ₹3.07 ₹49.09 ₹61.36 ₹2.40 ₹9.88 ₹236.01 → ₹245.88

Materials here are oil, wax, one Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80); labour, packaging, freight and GST are excluded. In percentage terms, 8% → 10% is a 25% increase in oil but, for Lavender, a 6.8% increase in materials. For Vanilla Bean it is 9.1%. The dearer the oil, the more of the candle's cost it already is, and the more a load change moves the total.

Price it at the size you really buy
These figures use 1 kg rates. If you buy Eucalyptus Spearmint in 100 g bottles (₹3.54 a gram) rather than the kilo (₹3.07), the extra per candle is ₹11.76 instead of ₹9.88 — one of the 24 oils where the kilo is at least 5% cheaper. For Lavender the two rates are close (₹5.40 and ₹5.22), so it barely matters.

Across 100, 500 and 1,000 candles

Multiply the per-candle figure by the run size. Because load scales linearly, the batch cost scales linearly too — there is no volume at which a higher load becomes relatively cheaper, unless your per-gram oil price falls when you buy more, which for most CSI oils it does not.

1,000 candles 16.00 kg 20.00 kg 4.00 kg 184.00 kg 180.00 kg 4.00 kg

The oil column is the one to plan cash around. A 1,000-candle run at 10% needs 20 kg of oil before wastage instead of 16 kg. For Lavender that is ₹20,884.00 more oil, partly offset by ₹2,396.00 less wax. The 500-candle quantities post and the 5,000-candle post work through full production quantities at scale.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A higher load sells more oil, and every figure on this page is money you would spend with us. That is exactly why you should only raise it if a side-by-side test shows your candle is clearly better at 10%. If testers cannot tell 8% from 10%, the ₹18,490.00 per 1,000 Lavender candles buys nothing. Test before you commit a season to it.

What you actually have to buy

Candles are poured in grams. Oil is bought in bottles. The real cash difference depends on how the extra grams fall across pack sizes.

The per-candle maths assumes you pay the kilo rate for every gram. In practice you buy whole bottles, and a load change can push you into an extra bottle or a different size. The table below finds the cheapest combination of in-stock sizes (100 g and up) that covers each run with a 4% wastage allowance — the actual cheque you would write at 8% and at 10%.

At 100 Lavender candles, rounding up to whole bottles makes the cash difference (₹2,061.00) larger than the per-candle maths (₹1,849.00), because the 10% order buys more spare oil; the leftover is stock for the next run, not a loss. At 500 and 1,000, the orders move to kilos. Pumpkin Spice is one of the oils where the kilo is genuinely cheaper (₹5.31 a gram against ₹5.90 at 100 g and 500 g), so at scale its 10% run is best bought almost entirely in kilos. Per-gram price breaks like that are rare: for most oils the kilo costs the same per gram as the 100 g, and volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp with no published discount figure.

The wax side moves the other way. At 1,000 candles with 4% extra, a practical Chunks order in 5 kg packs is 38 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg = ₹1,15,008.00 at 8%, and 37 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg = ₹1,12,612.00 at 10% — ₹2,396.00 less. Chunks are priced flat at about ₹0.60 a gram at every size (the 10 kg is fractionally dearer per kilo than two 5 kg packs), so the pack you choose is about storage and handling, not price.

The ceiling and the wick

Before costing 10%, check that your wax can take it. Only two ceilings are quoted in this data: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%. Both are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. In Chunks, 10% leaves three points of headroom. In CSI 464, 10% is the maximum; there is no room to go higher, and running at the ceiling leaves no margin for weighing error. For coconut soy, soy pearl and other waxes no ceiling is quoted here — check the product page or ask on WhatsApp.

More oil can need a different wick. In general practice, a higher load changes how a candle burns, and a wick that gave a clean full melt pool at 8% may behave differently at 10%. Wick sizes for specific jars are not published in this data, so re-run a burn test at the new load before pouring a production batch. A 10% candle that tunnels or smokes costs more than the oil.

What it does to margin

At an example selling price of ₹599, here is what the move does to a Lavender candle's gross margin and markup on materials. Gross margin is (price − cost) ÷ price; markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost. Labour, packaging, fees, freight and GST come off after this.

Example selling price ₹599.00 · 200 g Lavender · materials only
Margin and markup at 8% and 10%
Load Materials Gross profit Gross margin (on price) Markup (on cost)
8% ₹270.46 ₹328.54 54.8% 121.5%
10% ₹288.94 ₹310.06 51.8% 107.3%

The margin falls by 3.1% points and the markup by 14.2% points. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether customers notice. If the higher load lets you justify a higher price, or wins repeat orders you would otherwise lose, it can pay for itself. The ₹799 post shows how load interacts with the oil budget at a premium price, and the dosage post covers the case where a stronger oil lets you go the other way.

The CSI principle
Two points of load is four grams in every 200 g jar.
Say it that way when you plan: four grams times your oil's price per gram, times the candles in the run. That number, not ‘just 2%’, is what the decision costs.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A higher load means a larger oil order from us. We still say plainly that 10% is only worth paying for if a test shows it helps, and that CSI 464 is already at its stated maximum at 10%.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick and jar figures are those verified 10 September 2026; wick stickers from the 24–25 September pull. Per-candle, batch and pack-mix figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals; pack mixes use only sizes in stock on the pull date.

The 200 g candle, 4% wastage and ₹599 example price are working assumptions. Load ceilings (Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. For a production quote at your new load, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil for 10% load in a 200 g candle?
20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. At 8% it is 16 g and 184 g. Load is a share of the finished candle weight, not of the wax.
How much more does 10% fragrance load cost than 8%?
Per 200 g candle, 4 g × (oil ₹/g − wax ₹/g). With Chunks: Lavender ₹18.49, Pumpkin Spice ₹18.84, Vanilla Bean ₹28.19, Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹9.88.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 1,000 candles?
For 200 g candles: 16 kg at 8%, 20 kg at 10%, before wastage. Add 3–5% for pour loss and test burns (a working assumption).
Is 10% fragrance load too high for soy wax?
It depends on the wax. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%; CSI 464 up to 10%. Other soy waxes have no ceiling quoted in this data — check the product page. Re-test the wick at the higher load.
Does higher fragrance load mean stronger throw?
Not automatically. Wick size, melt pool, cure time and room size all matter, and CSI has not published throw data per oil. Compare 8% and 10% blind before changing production.
Is buying fragrance oil in bulk cheaper for a higher load?
Usually not per gram — for most CSI oils the kilo costs the same as the 100 g. A few, like Pumpkin Spice (10%) and Eucalyptus Spearmint (13.3%), are cheaper at 1 kg. I Use 500 g of One Fragrance Oil Every Month — When Should I Stop Buying 100 g Bottles and Move to 500 g or 1 Kg Packs? covers when to move up a pack size.

Non-price figures and assumptions: The candle is 200 g finished weight; 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax, 10% = 20 g + 180 g. Per-candle extra = 4 g × (oil ₹/g at 1 kg − ₹0.60/g Chunks). Materials = oil + wax + one Eco Thin C1 wick + one White Matte jar, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. Pack mixes are the cheapest combination of in-stock 100 g-and-larger sizes covering need × 1.04 (4% wastage, working assumption). ₹599 is an example selling price. Gross margin = (price − cost) ÷ price; markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost. No throw data is published per oil. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Prices change — the linked product pages are authoritative.
