I’m Comparing Two Wick Suppliers for Commercial Production — What Should I Record Beyond Melt-Pool Diameter to Determine Which Wick Actually Performs Better?
Share
Why isn't pool diameter enough? In a jar where both wicks reach the glass, both pools read "full". In our worked example the two suppliers' pools differ by at most a couple of millimetres, while one supplier's flame heights spread 4.5 times wider than the other's.
How many wicks should I test? Five from each supplier's pack, one per candle, poured from one melt into identical jars, coded by someone else so the scorer can't tell the suppliers apart. Ten candles.
What does it cost? In our worked example (CSI's 150 g jar, CSI 464, 8% Blue Ocean), ten candles use 120 g of oil and 1,380 g of wax: ₹2,290.00 of materials with five Eco C2 as one arm, before the other supplier's wicks, labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Why pool diameter can't separate two suppliers
Melt-pool diameter is the natural first measurement, and for choosing a size it is essential. For choosing between two suppliers of nominally the same size it runs out quickly. Once both wicks reach the glass in a given jar, both read "full pool". In our worked example both suppliers' candles reach 61–63 mm in a 63 mm inside by three hours; even the narrowest, 61 mm, is 94% of the surface. Pool diameter has nothing left to say.
What it cannot show is how much heat each wick makes getting there, how cleanly it burns that heat, and how consistent one wick is with the next. Those show up in flame height, carbon, soot and the rate at which wax disappears. And because you will buy hundreds or thousands of these wicks, consistency matters more than any single candle's result. A supplier whose average wick is fine but whose occasional wick runs tall will give you the occasional customer complaint, and you cannot tell which candle on the shelf has it.
This is a different job from checking a new carton from a supplier you already use. If your approved wick suddenly gives smaller flames, comparing the new lot with the old one is the new-carton comparison. Here you are choosing between two sources for the first time, or deciding whether to switch.
Before any burn: the bench inspection
Inspect a whole pack from each supplier, not just the five you will burn. You are looking for two things: whether the two suppliers' "same size" is physically the same, and how much one wick varies from another inside each pack. Record every wick with its pack's lot code.
| Field | How to read it | What a difference suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Lot code, pack count, date received | Copy from the pack; count the wicks | No lot code means no way to trace a later failure to a batch |
| Length, tab to tip | Steel ruler, to the millimetre | Short wicks may not reach your fill height; record it against your jar (Cotton Braided's page states 10.16 cm) |
| Straightness | Lay on a ruler; note the largest gap between wick and ruler in mm | Bent wicks set off-centre and lean, which voids burn sessions |
| Tab crimp | Hold the tab, gently twist the wick: does it rotate or slip in the crimp? | A loose crimp can let the wick tilt or lift during pouring |
| Weight per ten wicks | Weigh ten together on the same scale; repeat with a second ten | A large gap between suppliers' "same size" hints at a thicker or more coated wick |
| Coating and feel | Note stiffness, coating evenness, loose fibres | Uneven coating can burn unevenly; note it, don't over-read it |
None of these bench readings is a burn result, and none of them should pick the supplier on its own: a heavier wick is not automatically hotter, and a slightly bent wick can be straightened. They tell you which candles to watch and give you a baseline for the next carton. Any wick that fails straightness or crimp on the bench is replaced by another wick from the same pack before pouring, and the replacement is noted, because how many failed is itself a supplier fact.
The burn record, field by field
Burn every candle in still air, in sessions of about three hours with a full cool-down between, trimmed to the same 5–6 mm before each session. Record the same fields at the same hours for every candle. How you store and code these records over hundreds of tests is the burn-data organisation post; this is what goes into each line.
| Field | When | How | Why it separates suppliers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight before and after → grams per hour | Start and end of each session | Same scale, same spot; grams lost ÷ hours burned | The most direct heat reading; a hot wick eats wax faster |
| Trimmed flame height | 1 h and 3 h | Side-on photo against a ruler set behind the jar | Many makers use about 2.5–5 cm as a practical range |
| Pool width | 1, 2, 3 h | Photo from above with a ruler across the rim | Separates suppliers only before the pool reaches the glass |
| Pool depth | End of session | Wooden skewer near the wall, after extinguishing | A common target is about 0.5–1 cm |
| Carbon cap | End of session | Photo of the wick tip: none / bead / cap wider than wick | Mushrooming often precedes soot |
| Soot | Each check, and the rim after cooling | Smoke trail in still air; white-tissue wipe of the cool rim | Clean burning is a page claim until you see it |
| Flame-to-glass and lean | Each check | From above and side-on | Lean from a bent or loose wick shows up here |
| Oddities | Any time | Self-extinguishing, flicker in still air, wick curling, after-smoke | Rare events matter when you buy a thousand |
A worked example of the grams-per-hour line: a candle weighed 148.0 g before a three-hour session and 132.6 g after has burned 15 g, which is 5.13 g per hour. Use the same scale throughout; the CSI scale page states no resolution, so check yours against a known weight before you start. Turning grams into a throw-per-gram score is a different question, answered in the diffusion-or-heat post; here grams per hour is simply a heat and consistency reading.
Running it blind, five wicks per pack
Why five per pack? Fewer than five and a single odd wick dominates the spread; many more and the test stops being affordable for a small business. Five is our judgement, and it is enough to see whether one supplier's range is clearly wider than the other's. If the two ranges overlap and you need certainty, repeat with five more from a second pack of each, which also tests consistency between lots.
Spread within a pack: the number that decides
Here is the worked example behind the diagram. Every reading is illustrative; your numbers will differ. What matters is the shape of the comparison.
| Field | Supplier A (5 candles) | Supplier B (5 candles) | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trimmed flame at 1 h, mm | 32 · 34 · 31 · 35 · 33 (mean 33.0, range 4) | 28 · 41 · 33 · 46 · 30 (mean 35.6, range 18) | Means 8% apart; B's range is 4.5 times A's |
| Grams per hour, session 2 | 5.0 · 5.3 · 4.9 · 5.4 · 5.1 (mean 5.14, range 0.5) | 4.6 · 6.2 · 5.1 · 6.8 · 4.8 (mean 5.50, range 2.2) | B's fastest burns 48% more wax per hour than its slowest |
| Pool at 3 h, mm | 63 · 63 · 62 · 63 · 63 | 63 · 63 · 63 · 61 · 63 | No meaningful difference |
| Carbon, session 2 end | small bead on 2 of 5 | bead on 4 of 5, largest on the two tallest flames; no cap wider than the wick yet | Both pass the gate; B's carbon tracks its hot wicks |
| Soot, flame-to-glass | none | none | Both pass so far; keep watching |
| Bench: straightness, crimp | 0 of 20 rejected | 2 of 20 bent, replaced from the same pack | Consistent with B's wider spread |
On averages alone, B looks only a little hotter than A. On spread, B is a different product: two of its five wicks run near the top of the flame band and burn noticeably faster, and they carry the largest carbon beads. In production you cannot pick the good wicks out of B's box, so the customer who gets wick B4 gets a hotter, faster candle than the one you tested on B1. Supplier A's wicks behave like one wick.
Spread is also why you test in the candle you will sell. A wick that varies a little might be harmless in a jar where it sits mid-range and a problem in a jar where it already runs near the top of the band.
Choosing a supplier from the record
| Order | Question | If one supplier fails | If both pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Any burn-gate failure (flame over the band, soot, a carbon cap wider than the wick, heat, flame-to-glass) in any candle? | That supplier is out for this jar | Go to 2 |
| 2 | Spread: is one flame-height or grams-per-hour range more than about double the other? | Prefer the tighter supplier, if its mean is inside your target | Go to 3 |
| 3 | Mean against target: which sits nearer the middle of your band and pool depth? | Prefer the centred one; it leaves margin for jar and oil variation | Go to 4 |
| 4 | Commercial: price per wick, stock depth, lot codes on packs, response on batch questions | Prefer the traceable, stocked one | Either; keep both on file |
Price comes last on purpose. A wick is one of the cheapest components in a candle: at CSI the C2 is ₹9.44 a wick at every pack size, the same ₹9.44 in a pack of 1,000. A few paise saved on a less consistent wick are lost on the first returned candle. When the comparison is close, ask each supplier how they mark lots and whether one order can come from a single lot; ask us the same. Whether to commit to a thousand wicks once a supplier has won is the 1,000-wick purchase gate; cutting the number of wick SKUs you keep is the SKU consolidation audit.
Ten candles, costed
| Item | Bought | Used by ten candles | Cost of what is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil | 100 g ₹495.00 + 50 g ₹247.00 | 120 g (12 g × 10; 30 g left) | ₹593.80 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg ₹507.40 + 500 g ₹260.00 | 1,380 g (138 g × 10; 120 g left) | ₹705.00 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | Pack of 10, ₹944.00 | 10 jars (₹94.40 each) | ₹944.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks, Thick (C2) (supplier A arm) | 20 wicks, ₹188.80 | 5 burned, 20 inspected | ₹47.20 |
| Supplier B's wicks | their pack | 5 burned, a pack inspected | their price |
| Materials consumed, excluding supplier B's wicks | 10 candles | ₹2,290.00 |
That is ₹224.28 a candle before the wick. Costs are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. From nothing, including the scale, the cash outlay is ₹2,996.20. For a jar over 8 cm, swap the C2 arm for five Cotton Braided wicks (₹60.00) and recost the wax and oil for your fill weight. Blue Ocean's 15 g is ₹1.26 a gram dearer than its 100 g, so it is not the economical way to buy for ten candles.
Buying for a supplier comparison
Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. If CSI is not one of your two suppliers, you need only the constants: wax, oil, jars and a scale.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil, wax, jar and scale named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that CSI publishes no wick-performance data, that our Eco page states no wick dimensions, and that a competitor's wick should win if it is more consistent in your jar.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged where it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, oil, wax and jar wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
The bench and burn fields, five wicks per pack, the decision order and its "about double" spread threshold are our judgement; flame heights and pool depths are commonly cited rules of thumb; every candle reading is a worked example.
