CSI Wick Buying · New 8 cm Jar
Three sizes wrapped around your honest best guess can close an 8 cm bracket in one round. A fourth earns its place only when one wick versus two is still open; the packs are the same either way.
3 sizes
expected centre ± one rung on CSI's line, three candles each, from C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many wick sizes should I buy for a new 8 cm jar? Three, centred on the wick you expect to win: the expected centre plus one rung either side. With CSI's sized, tabbed wicks that is usually all three, Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided, three candles each.

When should I add a fourth? When your expected centre is Cotton Braided, the top tabbed rung, the "one rung above" is a pair (2 × C1), and C1 single drops out. When you genuinely cannot tell whether the jar wants one wick or two, buy four: C1, C2, Cotton Braided and 2 × C1.

What does each extra size cost? Three more candles, not more wick packs. In our worked example each arm is about ₹548.40 of materials (200 g at 8% Japanese Cherry Blossom in CSI 464), and up to five sizes still fit in C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 (₹332.40); pairs add a ₹250.00 holder pack.

Should I add the cut-to-length braid roll? Not in the first order. Its size is unstated, so it is a size you cannot place on the ladder, and at ₹706.82 it is the dearest one to add. Keep it for when the ladder lands between two rungs.
The short answer
Rule: expected centre ± one rung. On CSI's line (C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided → pairs) that is three sizes for almost every new 8 cm jar.
Which three: light oil, centre C2 → C1, C2, Cotton Braided. Heavy oil, centre Cotton Braided → C2, Cotton Braided, 2 × C1. Unsure about one wick or two → four sizes, adding 2 × C1.
Packs: C1 20 (₹118.00), C2 10 (₹94.40), Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00) cover every scenario up to five sizes; a pair arm adds a Steel Wick Holder pack (₹250.00).
Skip in the first order: the cut braid roll, the Loose 2-inch wick (its page says "2 inch diameters") and the wooden wick (one width, so not a size).
Expected centre, one rung each side: the sizes to buy CSI's sized, tabbed rungs, then pairs. The order of the pairs against Cotton Braided is a starting assumption, not a measured scale. Worked example: 8 cm inside, 200 g at 8% in CSI 464; materials per arm at CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. more wick → C1 C2 Cotton Braided 2 × C1 2 × C2 single, tabbed: C1 · C2 · Cotton Braided pairs: one holder per jar below C1: no smaller sized, tabbed wick A Light oil, expected centre C2 9 candles · ₹1,642.27 B Heavy oil, expected centre Cotton Braided 9 candles · ₹1,659.97 C Unsure: one wick or two? 12 candles · ₹2,197.76 expected centre (judgement) bought to close the bracket not bought in this scenario All three scenarios fit inside the same three smallest packs (C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 = ₹332.40); pairs add a holder. Extra sizes cost candles, jars and burn positions, not wick packs. Excludes your jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST.
CSI's wick options laid on one line, from C1 to a pair of C2. Each window is a sample order: three sizes wrapped around the expected centre, or four when one wick versus two is the open question. The windows move with the oil, but the same three smallest wick packs cover them all; what each extra size really adds is three more candles. Worked example at CSI live prices on 1 October 2026; the centres are our judgement, not CSI wick data.
Straight answer
I'm ordering sample wicks for a new 8 cm jar. How many sizes around the expected starting point should I buy?
Buy three sizes: the wick you expect to win, the rung below it and the rung above it. That is the smallest set that can close a bracket, a pass flanked by a fail on each side, in one round of candles. On CSI's line of sized, tabbed wicks (Eco C1, Eco C2, Cotton Braided) with pairs of C1 or C2 above them, an 8 cm inside diameter usually puts the centre at C2 or Cotton Braided, so the three are either C1 / C2 / Cotton Braided (lighter oils, our judgement) or C2 / Cotton Braided / 2 × C1 (heavier oils). Add a fourth size, 2 × C1 alongside C1 / C2 / Cotton Braided, only when you cannot judge whether the jar wants one wick or two. More than four buys uncertainty, not information. Each extra size costs three more candles (about ₹548.40 of materials in our worked example) but no extra wick pack: C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 (₹332.40) hold every wick for up to five sizes. How many candles of each size is a separate question; here the answer is three per size.
One line: three sizes wrapped around your expected centre, four if one-versus-two is open; the packs are the same either way.
The packs every 8 cm sample order uses: Eco C1 20 (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 1 October 2026), Eco C2 10 (₹94.40) and Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00). Add the Steel Wick Holder (₹250.00 for 5) only if a pair size is in your order.
Eco C1/C2 — from ₹94.40

The breadth rule: expected centre, one rung each side

One size is a guess. Two sizes is a coin toss. Three is the first number that can prove anything.

You buy sample wicks to find the one that passes, but you can only trust a pass when the sizes next to it fail in the expected direction: the smaller one too cool (a ring at the glass), the larger too hot (tall flame, carbon, a deep pool). That flanking is what closes a bracket; the rule itself, and why 7 cm makers end up buying every rung, is the bracket-closure post. Its purchasing consequence for sample breadth is simple: the minimum is three sizes, wrapped around where you expect the answer to be.

Why not two? Two sizes can tell you which of the two is better; they cannot tell you whether a third would be better still. If you buy C2 and Cotton Braided and both pass, you do not know whether C2 is the smallest that works; if both fail low, you do not know how far off you are. A three-size order answers in one round of cure and burns what a two-size order can take two rounds to answer. Choosing the first three for a 3-inch jar is covered in the first-three-wicks post; this page is about how far to widen it.

What each breadth can and cannot tell you
Three candles per size · our judgement, labelled
Sizes bought Can tell you Cannot tell you Usual outcome
1 Whether one wick passes Whether a smaller one also passes, or a bigger one passes better A second order, a second cure, a second set of burns
2 Which of two is better Where the answer sits if both pass or both fail Often a second order
3 (centre ± 1) A closed bracket, if the centre is roughly right Anything two rungs away One order, one round
4 Single versus pair as well Little more, unless the jar is borderline single/pair One round, three more candles
5 or more Almost every CSI option at once Nothing the four-size order would not, for a typical 8 cm jar (judgement) More candles than decisions

Breadth is not depth. How many candles of each size (three here, the minimum that lets one odd candle be outvoted), and when to add retest or spare candles per size, is the per-size sample-count post. Keep the two decisions separate: widen the ladder only when the centre is uncertain; deepen it only when the results are.

Where your centre sits decides which three

The centre is your best guess at the winning wick, made before you burn anything, from three inputs: the inside diameter, the wax and the oil. For an 8 cm inside diameter the pool is 50.27 cm² for one wick (25.13 cm² each for two): large enough that Cotton Braided's page line, "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", puts your jar right on its boundary. A very rough rule of thumb (about an hour of burning per 2.5 cm of width) gives about 3.2 hours to a full first pool, inside the commonly quoted 3–4 hours.

The oil moves the centre. Heavier, vanillin-rich or resinous oils (vanilla, coffee, oud, some gourmands) are commonly linked to needing a larger wick than light florals and herbals in the same jar: a tendency, not a rule, and CSI publishes no wick data for any oil. So the same jar gets different windows:

Choosing the three sizes for a new 8 cm jar
Expected centre (our judgement) ± one rung on CSI's line · three candles per size
Your oil and jar Expected centre Rung below Rung above Sizes to buy
Light floral, herbal or citrus (e.g. Japanese Cherry Blossom) C2 C1 Cotton Braided C1 · C2 · Cotton Braided
Heavy: vanilla, coffee, oud, resins Cotton Braided C2 2 × C1 (no larger single exists) C2 · Cotton Braided · 2 × C1
8 cm measured on the outside (about 7.3 cm inside) C2, perhaps lower C1 Cotton Braided C1 · C2 · Cotton Braided
Unsure whether one wick can do it Cotton Braided or a pair C2 2 × C1, 2 × C2 C1 · C2 · Cotton Braided · 2 × C1 (four)

The heavy-oil row drops C1 single, which surprises people. It is two rungs below the expected centre: if Cotton Braided wins, C2 is the documented fail below it, and C1 adds a fail you could have predicted. Three candles you do not pour are about ₹537.78 you do not spend. The worked 8 cm vanilla order, with its own bill and approval gates, is the cluster hub; the information to collect before choosing the centre at all (inside diameter at three heights, fill, wax, oil notes, intended burn length) is the pre-order spec sheet.

Mistake: buying "the 8 cm size plus the next two up". Why it fails: no CSI wick is sized for 8 cm (the Eco page states no jar range), so "the 8 cm size" is a guess, and stacking two sizes above a guess leaves nothing below it to close the bracket. Fix: name your centre honestly as a guess, then buy one rung each side of it.

The size-breadth table: what each extra size adds

Every size you add is three candles. Price the candles, not the wicks.

Here is every option on CSI's list for an 8 cm sample order, with what it adds. Materials per arm are three 200 g candles at 8% (16 g Japanese Cherry Blossom at the 100 g price, ₹80.00, plus 184 g CSI 464, ₹93.36, plus the wicks): excluding your jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. The 200 g fill is a labelled worked example.

Rolled up by scenario, the same table gives the size of the whole order. Oil grams are matched to in-stock bottle sizes, with what is left for a re-pour:

Sample orders by breadth · worked example
200 g at 8% · Japanese Cherry Blossom and CSI 464 in every row (the heavy-oil row too, so the rows compare) · your 8 cm jars excluded · all figures declared
Breadth Candles Materials consumed Wick packs Oil bought (left) Wax bought (left)
Three sizes, centre C2 9 ₹1,642.27 ₹332.40 2 × 100 g, ₹1,000.00 (56 g) 2 kg, ₹1,014.80 (344 g)
Three sizes, centre Cotton Braided 9 ₹1,659.97 ₹332.40 + holders 2 × 100 g (56 g) 2 kg (344 g)
Four sizes (adds 2 × C1) 12 ₹2,197.76 ₹582.40 with holders 100 + 100 + 50 g, ₹1,270.00 (58 g) 3 kg, ₹1,522.20 (792 g)
Five sizes (adds 2 × C2) 15 ₹2,774.48 ₹582.40 with holders 3 × 100 g, ₹1,500.00 (60 g) 3 kg (240 g)

Why two 100 g bottles for nine candles, not 100 g + 50 g (₹770.00)? The cheaper pair leaves 6 g, not one candle; two 100 g leave 56 g, enough to re-pour a size if one candle of three goes odd. For fifteen candles, 100 + 100 + 50 g would leave only 10 g. Bought from nothing (your jars aside), the three-size order is ₹2,347.20 and the four-size order ₹3,374.60.

Why the packs never limit breadth, and what does

CSI's smallest in-stock packs are larger than a ladder needs: C1 comes in 20s (the 10-pack is out of stock on 1 October 2026), C2 and Cotton Braided in 10s. A C1 single and a 2 × C1 arm use 9 of the 20; a C2 single and a 2 × C2 arm use 9 of the 10. So five sizes fit in the same three packs as three, and the only wick cash a wider order adds is a holder pack for the pairs, or the C2 20-pack (₹188.80, +₹94.40) if a mixed pair pushes C2 past ten. Per wick it is the same ₹9.44 either way: C1, C2 and Cotton Braided are flat per wick in every pack.

What really limits breadth is everything around the wick. Each size is three more of your own 8 cm jars, three more 200 g pours, three more burn positions kept in still air for weeks, and three more candles to log at every session. A home bench that runs nine candles calmly may run fifteen badly, and a badly run fifteen tells you less than a well run nine. That is the practical cap, and it is why our rule stops at four.

Don't buy a size because the pack makes it "free": the six C1 left in your 20-pack make a 2 × C1 arm feel costless, but the arm is three candles, ₹555.48 of materials and three jars. Argued against our own interest: if your oil is light and your centre is C2, leave the pairs out of the first order; they are already in your packs if burn 3 says you need them.
One wick or two at 8 cm?
An 8 cm inside diameter sits in the band where single and double wicks are both worth comparing, but where that band starts is judgement, and it is covered with its pool-area maths in the run-both zone post. For the order, the practical question is narrower: add 2 × C1 only if you would be unsurprised to see Cotton Braided leave a ring.

The cut-to-length roll: a size you cannot place

An unsized wick is not an extra rung. It is an extra unknown.

The Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs (61 meters) is the tempting fourth size, because it looks like flexibility: cut any length, tab it, done. The page describes "a long spool of braided cotton wick" and "100 Wick Tabs" and says "You can cut the wick to the desired length", but it states no braid size. Cut length changes how tall the wick stands, not how thick it is; the roll is one wick size whose position against C1, C2 and Cotton Braided you only learn by burning it.

Cut-to-length options per wick · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
Per-wick cost depends on cut length; labelled lengths · declared
Listing Price Per wick Tabs Page wording on size
Braided Wick Roll, 61 m + 100 tabs ₹706.82 ₹7.07 (100 tabs are the limit; 61 cm of braid per tab) 100 included none stated
Eco Braided Wicks, 5 m ₹472.00 ₹9.44 per 10 cm length (worked example) not mentioned on the page "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars"
Eco Candle Wicks Loose, 5 m ₹413.00 ₹8.26 per 10 cm length (worked example) untabbed "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters"
For comparison: C2 · Cotton Braided ₹94.40 · ₹120.00 for 10 ₹9.44 · ₹12.00 tabbed C2 none; Cotton Braided "exceeding 8 cm"

Per tabbed wick, the roll is cheaper than C2 or Cotton Braided once bought, an honest point in its favour for production. For sampling it is the opposite: ₹706.82 of cash for one three-candle arm whose result you cannot place on the ladder until it burns. If your three-size order lands in a gap (C2 too small, Cotton Braided too big), the roll becomes a sensible gap-filler, priced against the other options in the gap-filling post. One more caution: whether a braid is primed (pre-waxed) changes first-light and early burn, and the roll's page does not say; how to test that variable is the untreated-to-pre-waxed post.

After burn 3: when breadth grows, and when it shrinks

The first order is a bet on the centre. Burn 3 tells you whether the bet was close, and the breadth of the next order follows from it. Screen at burn 3 with the candles burned in 3–4 hour sessions in still air, trimmed to about 5–6 mm; approve only after all three candles of a size pass the full life to about 1 cm left. Near the bottom, judge how close the flame sits to the glass by eye; never touch the glass to judge heat.

1
Pour every size from one potSame wax bag, oil bottle, load and pour temperature (CSI 464 states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; a lower jar limit governs). Label bases C1-a, C2-a, CB-a, 2C1-a…
2
Cure all sizes togetherMany makers wait about a week before judging soy; whatever you choose, every size gets the same days.
3
Read burn 3 as a line, not as winnersSizes should run from cool to hot along the rung line. A size that breaks the order (a hotter C2 than Cotton Braided) is a set-up problem first: centring, draught, trim.
4
Stop burning the sizes that failed in the expected directionA rung that left a ring, or ran hot, has done its job. It is never reordered for this jar and oil.
5
Widen only at an open edgeIf the largest size bought still left a ring, the next order adds the next size up (a pair); if the smallest ran hot, the next order adds below it. Otherwise buy nothing.
6
Carry the leaders to the full lifeAll three candles of the leading size to about 1 cm left before any production purchase.
Burn-3 reading → next order's breadth

Notice how rarely the right move is "buy more sizes now". The three-size order, centred honestly, often closes in the first round, and when it does not, the packs you already hold usually contain the next size. Where a jar is genuinely single-or-pair, the cost of adding the pair arm in the first order rather than the second is set out in the 8.5 cm double-arm post.

From the winning size to the production order

When one size passes the full life on all three candles, size the production order with the formula from the cluster hub: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), 5% allowance in our worked example. Because C1, C2 and Cotton Braided are flat per wick, choose packs that add up to the number.

Production by winning size · worked example: 120 candles a month in your 8 cm jar

2 × C1 252 2 × 100 + 3 × 20 = 260 ₹1,534.00
Braided Wick Roll (if it won a gap) 126 cut wicks two rolls, 200 tabs ₹1,413.64, plus your cutting and tabbing time

Reorder point for a single-wick winner: 4 wicks a day × your lead time + safety stock. With a 10-day order-to-bench time and a week of cover, reorder at 68. The 10 days is yours: CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish lead times or stock depth, so confirm dispatch on WhatsApp before a big run.

Don't buy the big pack of your expected centre before the samples burn: a C2 100-pack (₹944.00) bought "because it will probably be C2" costs exactly what the same wicks cost in 10s, and if Cotton Braided wins it is 97 spare C2. Argued against our own interest: the sample order is three small packs; the production order is sized from the winner, not the guess.

What to buy for an 8 cm sample order, and what to skip

Five items, in the order a sample order uses them, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Oil counts use 16 g per 200 g candle and 12 g per 150 g candle.

The extra size people are tempted to add "just in case". The page describes "a long spool of braided cotton wick" with "100 Wick Tabs" and says "You can cut the wick to the desired length". It states no braid size, so you cannot place it on the rung line before you burn it. The oil the scenarios are costed on. The page lists "sweet cherry and soft pink petals opening into a rose and jasmine heart, grounded by warm sandalwood and musk" and states "6-13% for candles". CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", so the wax's 10% governs; 8% sits inside both (8.70% of wax weight). Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026. The 100 g and the 500 g are both ₹5.00 a gram, so the 500 g saves nothing per gram over two 100 g bottles; only the 1 kg is cheaper (₹4.84). Limitation: the light/heavy reading that puts its centre at C2 is our judgement from its notes; CSI publishes no wick data for any oil.
Size Price Per gram 200 g candles at 8% (16 g) 150 g candles at 8% (12 g)
15 g ₹104.00 ₹6.93 none (a sniff sample) 1
50 g ₹270.00 ₹5.40 3 4
100 g ₹500.00 ₹5.00 6 8
500 g ₹2,500.00 ₹5.00 31 41
1 kg ₹4,842.00 ₹4.84 62 83
Three sizes use 144 g; two 100 g bottles leave 56 g. Buy 100 g — ₹500.00

Steel Wick Holder (Set of 5)
Adding a pair size adds a holder per jar. The page says "3-hole layout fits single, double, or triple wick setups" and "up to 9 cm wide", so it spans an 8 cm jar; the holes are in a line and the text we captured states no spacing, so check the outer two against the spacing you plan (where to place two wicks). Argued against our own interest: if your order has no pair arm, you don't need it; a single-wick ladder centres fine with the ₹118.00 Wick Centering Device or what you already use.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers here
Pack of 5 ₹250.00 ₹50.00 three pair jars, two spare
Pack of 10 ₹500.00 ₹50.00 two pair arms poured at once (six jars)
Pack of 25 ₹1,250.00 ₹50.00 production pours; flat per holder
₹50.00 a holder in every pack, reusable. Buy 5 — ₹250.00

Skip for the first 8 cm sample order: Eco Candle Wicks Loose (2 inch diameter) (₹413.00 for 5 m), whose page says "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters", far below 8 cm; the Eco Braided Wicks (₹472.00 for 5 m), unsized and with no tabs mentioned, a gap-filler like the roll; and Performance Wooden Wicks (₹590.00 for 10), one listing with no widths, so it cannot be a size in a ladder.

Launching an 8 cm candle for Diwali (8 November 2026, 38 days from 1 October 2026)? A three-size order poured this week can pass burn 3 by mid-October, with full-life burns in the weeks after. That is one round, not two: the case for buying three sizes now rather than one. Send us your approved size and candle count for a production quote with a GST invoice and dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Wrap the guess, don't widen it.
Three sizes around an honest centre can close an 8 cm bracket in one round. A fourth earns its place only when one-versus-two is open. Extra sizes cost candles, not packs, so add them for information, never for comfort.
"The right number of sample sizes is the smallest number that can prove you wrong."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every wick, holder and oil named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to leave our braid roll, Loose wick and wooden wick out of your first order, not to buy a size because the pack makes it feel free, that no CSI wick is sized for 8 cm, and that we list no 8 cm jar.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, oil and holder wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The expected centres, the order of pairs against Cotton Braided, the 200 g fill, the cut lengths, the 5% allowance, the 120-candle month and the 10-day lead time are our judgement or worked examples; melt-pool times and rules of thumb are commonly cited, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How many wick sizes should I test for a new candle jar?
Three: your expected winner plus one size either side, so the result can be flanked by a fail below and a fail above. With CSI wicks for an 8 cm jar that is usually C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, or C2, Cotton Braided and two C1 for heavy oils.
Should I include a double wick when sampling wicks for an 8 cm jar?
Only if you expect Cotton Braided, CSI's top sized tabbed wick, to be the answer, or you genuinely cannot tell whether one wick will do. Then add 2 × C1. For lighter oils, leave pairs for the second round; the wicks are already in your packs.
What does it cost to add one more wick size to a test?
Three more candles: about ₹548.40 of materials in our 200 g worked example, plus three of your jars. Usually no extra wick pack, because CSI's C1 20, C2 10 and Cotton Braided 10 hold the wicks for up to five sizes.
Is a braided wick roll a good way to test many wick sizes?
No. Cutting changes length, not thickness, and the roll's page states no braid size, so it is one unknown size, not many. It is useful as a gap-filler after a ladder lands between two rungs, at ₹7.07 per tabbed wick.
What wick size should I start with for an 8 cm jar?
No one can name it before you burn it. As judgement, C2 is a sensible centre for light oils and Cotton Braided for heavy ones at an 8 cm inside diameter; Cotton Braided's page describes it for jars "exceeding 8 cm". Buy one rung either side.
Do I need different sample wicks if my 8 cm is the outside diameter?
Possibly. With 0.35 cm walls an 8 cm outside is about 7.3 cm inside, noticeably less pool, so your centre may move down a rung. The C1 / C2 / Cotton Braided window still covers it; measure inside before you order.
Your 8 cm sample order
Three sizes around your expected centre: C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 = ₹332.40.
Name your centre from the oil and the inside diameter, buy one rung either side, pour three candles of each, screen at burn 3 and approve only on the full life. Tell us your oil and jar on WhatsApp and we will check the breadth before you pay.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on jar diameter → wick testing (5501–5520) in the series on wick purchase × jar × wax × fragrance. It covers how many wick SIZES to sample for a new 8 cm jar: the expected-centre ± one rung rule on CSI's line of tabbed wicks and pairs, which three sizes for light and heavy oils, when a fourth (pair) size is worth adding, a size-breadth table with the cost of every option, why the packs never limit breadth, the cut-to-length roll, reading burn 3 into the next order, and the step to production quantity.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The 8.0 cm inside diameter, 200 g fill, 0.35 cm wall and 10 cm cut lengths are labelled assumptions; pool area = π r². Ceilings as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Japanese Cherry Blossom 6–13% for candles, so the wax's 10% governs): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times (about 3–4 hours; about an hour per 2.5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. The expected centres, breadth rule, 5% allowance, 120-candle month and 10-day lead time are editorial judgement and worked examples. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST.
