One wick per saleable candle undercounts every time. Add the rejects as whole candles, add a small allowance for wicks bent in handling, and buy the test wicks separately — before the production pack.

for 1,000 saleable single-wick candles at 2% rejects and 1% damaged wicks · Thin C1 1,000 + 2 × 20 = ₹6,136.00 · CSI pricing re-checked 4 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I buy exactly 1,000 wicks? No. Rejects and damaged wicks each consume a wick without producing a saleable candle. At 2% rejects and 1% damage you need 1,032.

How many test wicks? Four candles per candidate is a working practice; three candidates is 12 test candles, from a Thin C1 20-pack and Thick C2 and Cotton Braided 10-packs: ₹332.40.

Which pack sizes? For Thin C1: 1,000 + 2 × 20 = 1,040 wicks, ₹6,136.00. Every Eco and Cotton Braided pack is priced per wick, so there is no bulk discount to chase.

What does the whole order cost? ₹1,59,285.62 in CSI materials with Thin C1 as the winner. See the shopping list.
The short answer
Answer: Production wicks = order ÷ (1 − reject rate) + a damaged-wick allowance. For 1,000 candles at 2% and 1%: 1,021 + 11 = 1,032. Test wicks are bought separately, first.
Why: A rejected candle used a wick; a bent or re-set wick never reached a candle. Pour loss and jar breakage do not consume wicks, so they stay off the wick line.
Order: Test packs (₹332.40) → burn and full-life tests → 1,032 of the winner in real packs. Hold the 1,000-pack until the full-life candle passes.

The wick ledger for a 1,000-candle single-wick order. Rejects (2%) and damaged wicks (1%) are labelled working assumptions; pour loss and jar breakage never reach the wick line. Test wicks come from small packs before the production order, which is placed only after the winning wick has finished a full-life candle.
Straight answer
I need 1,000 single-wick candles — should I buy exactly 1,000 wicks or additional pieces for testing, damaged wicks and production loss?
Buy more than 1,000 — but not "10% to be safe", and not all at once. Every rejected candle used a wick, and some wicks are bent or re-set before they reach a candle. With a 2% reject allowance and a 1% damaged-wick allowance (labelled working assumptions — use your own), production needs 1,000 ÷ 0.98 = 1,021 candles plus 11 damaged = 1,032 wicks, which is one Eco Thin C1 1,000-pack plus two 20-packs: ₹6,136.00. Pour loss and jar breakage do not consume wicks, so they stay off this line. Testing is a separate, earlier purchase: CSI publishes no wick sizes per jar, so pour four test candles each with Thin C1, Thick C2 and Cotton Braided from small packs (₹332.40), and buy the production pack only after the winner has burned a candle to the end. Exactly 1,000 would leave you 32 wicks short.
One line: test wicks first from small packs; production wicks = order ÷ (1 − rejects) + damaged allowance.
For 1,000 saleable single-wick candles, do not buy exactly 1,000 wicks. With a 2% reject allowance and a 1% damaged-wick allowance (both labelled working assumptions) the line needs 1,032 production wicks — one Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 1,000-pack (₹5,900.00) plus two 20-packs (₹236.00), ₹6,136.00 — bought after 12 test candles have chosen the wick from small packs costing ₹332.40.

Exactly 1,000 wicks is the one number that is certainly wrong

A wick costs ₹5.90. A production line that runs out of wicks with 30 jars to fill costs a day.

One wick per candle is true for the candles you sell. It is not true for the candles you make. A 1,000-candle order pours more than 1,000 candles, because some will be rejected — a tunnel, a crack, a sunken top, a wick that drifted off centre and could not be saved. And some wicks never make it into a candle at all: a tab bent in the box, a wick creased while centring, a sticker that let go and a wick that had to be pulled out and replaced. Each of those consumes a wick without producing a saleable candle. Buying exactly 1,000 guarantees you run short by roughly the number of things that go wrong.

So the wick line has three parts. The test wicks — a small quantity of each candidate, bought before anything else to decide which wick the order uses. The production wicks — one per candle poured, which is the order divided by (1 − reject rate). And the damaged-wick allowance — a small percentage of production for wicks lost in handling. In this example that is 1,000 ÷ 0.98 = 1,020.41 → 1,021 candles poured for production, plus 1% of those, 11 wicks, for damage: 1,032 production wicks. Exactly 1,000 would leave you 32 wicks short.

The CSI principle
Test wicks are a separate purchase. Production wicks = order ÷ (1 − rejects) + damaged allowance.
Do not buy the production pack until the test candles pass, and do not use the production pack to run the test.

The wick ledger for 1,000 single-wick candles

The example candle is a 160 g candle in the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Orchard Pear at 8% — 12.8 g of oil and 147.2 g of wax. The 200 ml is the jar's brim volume, not a fill weight, and CSI does not publish a fill for it: 160 g is illustrative, so weigh a test pour. Natural Soy Pearl has no published fragrance ceiling, so 8% is a labelled starting load for testing, not a specification. None of that changes the wick count, which depends only on candles.

Single-wick candles · 2% rejects and 1% damaged wicks are labelled working assumptions · replace with your own
From 1,000 saleable candles to 1,032 production wicks
Line Rule Calculation Wicks
Saleable candles One wick each 1,000 × 1 1,000
Rejects (2%) Whole candles, so whole wicks 1,000 ÷ 0.98 = 1,020.41 → up +21 → 1,021
Damaged wicks (1%) Wicks lost before a candle exists 1,021 × 0.01 = 10.21 → up +11 → 1,032
Pour loss Wax and oil only Not applied to wicks —
Glass breakage Jars only Not applied to wicks (see the breakage post) —
Round to packs Cheapest in-stock Thin C1 cover 1 × 1,000 + 2 × 20 1,040 (8 spare)
Test wicks (separate) 4 candles × 3 candidates Small packs, bought first 12 used

Two lines say "not applied", and they matter as much as the ones that are. Pour loss is wax left in the jug and on the jar rim — it uses no wicks. Jar breakage, which the 2% breakage post sizes, happens to empty glass before a wick goes in. If you added those percentages to the wick line as well, you would be buying wicks for losses that never touch a wick. The total over-buy would be small in rupees, but it is the same habit that over-buys wax by kilos.

If your damaged-wick rate is different
Damaged wicks Allowance Production wicks Packs Spare after packs CSI price
0.0% 0 1,021 1 × 500 + 4 × 100 + 1 × 50 + 4 × 20 9 ₹6,077.00
0.5% 6 1,027 1 × 500 + 4 × 100 + 1 × 50 + 4 × 20 3 ₹6,077.00
1.0% 11 1,032 1 × 1,000 + 2 × 20 8 ₹6,136.00
2.0% 21 1,042 1 × 1,000 + 1 × 50 8 ₹6,195.00
3.0% 31 1,052 1 × 1,000 + 3 × 20 8 ₹6,254.00

The striking thing about this table is how little the price moves: from no damage allowance to a generous 3%, the Thin C1 bill moves from ₹6,077.00 to ₹6,254.00. Eco wicks are priced at ₹5.90 each in every pack, so the cheapest cover is simply the combination with the smallest overshoot — which is why the zero-allowance row is a fiddly mix of ten packets that saves a few rupees over a 1,000-pack and two 20-packs. Opening fewer packets is worth more than that on a production day. Your damage rate is a reason to handle wicks carefully, not a reason to agonise over the wick order.

Running the wick test out of the production pack. It feels efficient: buy the 1,000-pack of your best guess, take twelve wicks out for tests. If the test then picks a different wick, you own ₹5,900.00 of Thin C1 or ₹9,440.00 of Thick C2 with no order to use it on. Fix: test from the smallest in-stock packs of each candidate, and place the production order only after the full-life candle finishes. The test packs cost ₹332.40 in all.
Measure your damage rate once
Count wicks issued to the pouring table and candles completed at the end of a production day. The difference, minus rejects you logged, is your damaged-wick figure. One day's tally on a 100-candle run replaces the 1% assumption on this page with your own number.

The test wicks: small packs, three candidates, four candles each

The most expensive wick is the 1,000-pack of the wrong one.

CSI does not publish wick sizes per jar diameter, so the wick for a 1,000-candle order is decided by burn tests, not by a chart. The cheapest way to run them is three candidates side by side in your actual jar, wax, oil and load: Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made. Four candles per candidate is a labelled working practice — three to burn in matched cycles, one to take to the end of the jar. That is 12 test candles in all, and they need their own wicks from small packs.

Test packs · smallest in-stock sizes, re-checked 4 October 2026 · Thin C1 10-pack out of stock
What the wick test costs
Candidate Test candles Smallest in-stock pack Price Spare for re-pours
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 4 1 × 20 ₹118.00 16
Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 4 1 × 10 ₹94.40 6
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made 4 1 × 10 ₹120.00 6
Total 12 ₹332.40

The Thin C1 10-pack is out of stock on the 4 October re-check, so the Thin C1 test comes from a 20-pack at ₹118.00. The spare wicks are useful: a test candle that is poured badly can be re-poured without reordering, and the leftovers of the losing candidates make the first candles of a full-life validation run if the winner later struggles. The 4 + 4 + 4 test candles also need wax, oil and jars, which are included in the shopping list below.

1
Pour four candles per candidate on the same daySame jar, same wax lot, same oil lot, same load, same pour temperature and same cooling spot. Label each base with the wick and candle number.
2
Cure to the same checkpointUse a labelled checkpoint such as 7 days so no candle is judged younger than another. Natural Soy Pearl publishes no cure time; record the one you use.
3
Burn in matched setsOne candle of each wick lit together, spaced apart, 3–4 hours per cycle with a full cool-down — a commonly used working practice. Record time to full melt pool, pool depth, flame height, mushrooming and soot.
4
Knock out on safety firstAny wick that runs taller, sootier or hotter on the glass than the others is out, however good its pool. CSI publishes no numeric flame or jar-temperature limits; judge against the best candidate and the fire-safety standard you work to.
5
Take one candle per surviving wick to the endLate tunnelling or a growing flame only shows near the bottom of the jar. Do not order the 1,000-pack until this candle has finished.
6
Then place the production order1,032 wicks of the winner, rounded to real packs, with stickers to match. The table below prices each possible winner.

The production order for whichever wick wins

Because the wick is decided by test, the production line has three possible prices. Each is the cheapest in-stock combination covering 1,032 wicks. All three products are priced linearly — ₹5.90, ₹9.44 and ₹12.00 a wick at every pack size — so the 1,000-pack is not a discount, only fewer packets to open.

1,032 production wicks · cheapest in-stock packs · re-checked 4 October 2026
Production wick cost by test winner
If the winner is Packs Wicks bought Spare CSI price Per saleable candle
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 1 × 1,000 + 2 × 20 1,040 8 ₹6,136.00 ₹6.14
Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 1 × 1,000 + 2 × 20 1,040 8 ₹9,817.60 ₹9.82
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made 1 × 1,000 + 4 × 10 1,040 8 ₹12,480.00 ₹12.48
Performance Wooden Wicks 10 × 100 + 1 × 50 1,050 18 ₹43,660.00 ₹43.66

Wooden wicks are in the table for completeness: their largest listed pack is 100, so a 1,000-candle order needs 11 packets, and at ₹43,660.00 they cost about seven times the Thin C1 line. They are a different product, not a substitute; if you are considering them, test them as a fourth candidate. Whatever wins, the saleable-candle cost of the wick line is a small share of a candle that carries roughly ₹148.28 of CSI material in this example — the wick is about 4% of it with Thin C1.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. "Buy 1,100 to be safe" sounds prudent, and on Thin C1 it costs ₹6,490.00 against ₹6,136.00. That is only ₹354.00 more, but it is 68 wicks you have no use for unless your next order uses the same wick in the same jar. The better safety margin is the small top-up you already have and a damage tally you actually keep. And the expensive mistake is not 100 spare wicks — it is a 1,000-pack bought before the test candles finished, which is ₹5,900.00 to ₹12,000.00 of the wrong wick.

The priced CSI shopping list

What to buy this week, what to buy after the burn tests

Single-wick orders are the simplest case of the series' buy-now/buy-later rule. The wax, the oil (if the client has approved the fragrance), the jars and one sheet of stickers can be ordered now, because the test candles need them and every wick candidate uses the same ones. Only the production wick waits. If the client has not yet approved the fragrance, hold the kilos of oil as well — the new-fragrance post shows how to size that wait. If the winning wick later fails the full-life candle, the unvalidated-wick post lists what else to hold.

Where the other allowances live

Wicks are one line of the 1,000-candle sheet. The double-wick post doubles the production line and changes the damage arithmetic; the breakage post owns the jar allowance; the 20-day remake post sizes replacement candles; the buffer-logic post explains why consumables and glass need different rules; and the procurement sheet puts the wick line next to every other. If you have not chosen a wick at all, the sample-wick post sets the candidate count for a smaller first run.

Test with small packs. Buy the 1,000 once the last test candle has burned to the bottom — plus the rejects, plus the wicks your hands will bend.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia
Making a small-format candle instead? The ledger is identical; only the jar changes. The Golden Aluminium Tin has a published 85 g fill and sells at ₹360.00 for 12, and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar has a published 50 g wax capacity. Every other CSI jar's fill should be weighed.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell wicks by the thousand and would be happy to see you buy 1,100 or 1,200. This page sizes the spare to the losses that actually consume a wick and warns against buying the production pack before the test.

Frequently asked questions

How many extra wicks should I buy for candle production?
Enough to cover rejects (as whole candles) and wicks damaged in handling — about 3% at 2% rejects and 1% damage. For 1,000 candles that is 32 extra. Test wicks are separate.
Do I need extra wicks for pour loss?
No. Pour loss is wax and oil left in the jug and on rims; it uses no wicks. Apply it to wax and oil only.
How many wicks do I need to test before a big candle order?
A working practice is four candles per candidate wick. With three candidates that is 12 test candles and 12 wicks, from the smallest in-stock packs.
Is the 1,000 pack of Eco wicks cheaper per wick?
No. Eco Thin C1 is ₹5.90 a wick in every pack from 20 to 1,000; Thick C2 is ₹9.44; Cotton Braided is ₹12.00. The big pack buys convenience, not a lower rate.
Which wick size should I use for a 200 ml jar?
CSI does not publish wick sizes per jar diameter. Test candidates side by side in your jar, wax, oil and load, and take one candle per candidate to the end.
Can I use leftover test wicks in production?
Only the winner's. Leftover test wicks of the winning type can join the production stock; the others are useful for a later re-test or a different jar.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The quantity method — finished weight split by load, allowances in a fixed order, rounding to real listed packs — applies to any supplier's materials.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of finished weight (160 g at 8% = 12.8 g oil + 147.2 g wax). The 160 g fill, 8% load (Natural Soy Pearl has no published ceiling), 2% rejects, 1% damaged wicks, 4% pour loss, four test candles per candidate, cure checkpoints and 3–4 hour burn cycles are labelled working assumptions. Per-candle material cost (₹148.28) uses Soy Pearl at the 50 kg rate, Orchard Pear at the 1 kg rate, a Thin C1 wick, a Salsa jar at the 100-pack rate and one sticker; it excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing, no Salsa fill weight and no Soy Pearl ceiling; the 50 kg Soy Pearl bag is listed in limited stock. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
