A 20% swing on 500 candles a month is 100 candles either way. You only need to buffer the upside, and only for the days between placing an order and it landing plus the days until you next look at the shelf. Check weekly and the buffer is a few kilos, not a month.
6.63 kg
of wax safety stock for a weekly stock check and 7-day delivery · ₹3,365.69 of CSI 464 · 150 g candles at 8% · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much wax safety stock do I need for 500 candles a month with 20% variation? With 150 g candles at 8% and a weekly stock check against a 7-day delivery, 6.63 kg. That is 20% of the 33.17 kg you use in the 14 days between one check and the next delivery. Held as CSI 464 it is ₹3,365.69 of wax.

Why not just keep an extra month of wax? Because a month is 71.07 kg and ₹36,060.92 of CSI 464 on a shelf to cover a swing that, at most, needs 17.53 kg even if you only order once a month. The extra month buys protection against a supplier failing entirely, not against a 20% swing.

When should I reorder? On your weekly check, if the shelf holds 39.80 kg or less, order. That covers 14 days of average use (33.17 kg) plus the buffer. If you watch stock at every pour, the line drops to 19.90 kg. See the reorder line.

What does the buffer cost to hold? At an example cost of money of 1.5% a month (replace with yours), 6.63 kg of CSI 464 costs about ₹50.49 a month to carry. Three days without wax at 500 candles a month is about 50 candles unmade.
The short answer
Consumption: 150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax. With 3% allowance: 142.14 g wax a candle, 71.07 kg a month at 500, 2.37 kg a day. High month (600): 85.28 kg. Low month (400): 56.86 kg.
Safety stock: 20% × daily use × (lead time + days between checks). Every pour: 3.32 kg. Weekly: 6.63 kg. Fortnightly: 9.95 kg. Fixed monthly order: 17.53 kg.
Order: One month rounded to CSI 464 packs: 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g = ₹36,285.40. The buffer as sealed packs: 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg = ₹3,551.80.

Same 20% swing, five ways to buffer it — wax safety stock at 500 candles a month Bar = kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 held only as a buffer · label = kg · ₹ at ₹507.40/kg Watch every pour 3.32 kg · ₹1,682.84 Weekly stock check 6.63 kg · ₹3,365.69 Fortnightly check 9.95 kg · ₹5,048.53 Fixed monthly order 17.53 kg · ₹8,895.03 'Keep an extra month' 71.07 kg · ₹36,060.92 The buffer depends on how often you look at the shelf, not only on how much sales swing.
All five bars protect against the same thing: a month running 20% above 500 candles. The difference is how long the buffer has to last before a replenishment can land. Watching stock at every pour means the buffer covers only the 7-day delivery. A weekly check adds the 7 days until you next look. A fixed monthly order adds a whole month. Keeping "an extra month" is 71.07 kg, many times more than any sensible buffer for this swing.
Straight answer
I sell 500 candles a month but demand varies by 20%. How much safety stock of wax should I keep without tying up too much cash?
Size the buffer from the upside of the swing, over the time it has to last. Assume 150 g candles at 8% (replace with yours): each is 138 g of wax, or 142.14 g with a 3% allowance, so 500 candles use 71.07 kg a month, 2.37 kg a day. A 20% swing means a busy month runs 100 candles over, but you do not need a month's buffer for it. You need 20% extra for the days between placing an order and it arriving, plus the days until you next check the shelf. Check weekly against a 7-day delivery and that window is 14 days: 20% × 2.37 kg × 14 = 6.63 kg, about ₹3,365.69 of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464. Your reorder line on the weekly check is then 39.80 kg. Only order monthly on a fixed date and the same swing needs 17.53 kg. Keep "an extra month" and you lock up ₹36,060.92 to cover a risk that ₹3,365.69 covers. The cheapest safety stock is looking at the shelf more often.
One line: buffer = 20% × daily use × (lead + days between checks): weekly checks need 6.63 kg, not a month.
The buffer for this plan fits in sealed bags you never open until you have to: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg for ₹3,551.80. The monthly working order is 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g for ₹36,285.40.

What a 20% swing actually means in kilos

"Demand varies by 20%" sounds like a reason to hold 20% more of everything, all the time. It is not. It is a reason to hold 20% more of a few days' use, at the right moment.

Start by turning the swing into kilos. The title does not give a candle size, so this page uses a 150 g candle at an 8% fragrance load, a common size for a 500-a-month seller. Replace it with yours; every figure below scales in proportion. By the CSI convention, load is a share of the finished weight, so each candle is 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax. With a 3% allowance for pour loss and test burns, that is 142.14 g of wax per candle.

150 g at 8% · 3% allowance · 30-day month · wax only
Your average, busy and quiet month
Month Candles Wax a month Wax a day Wax over a 7-day delivery
Quiet (−20%) 400 56.86 kg 1.90 kg 13.27 kg
Average 500 71.07 kg 2.37 kg 16.58 kg
Busy (+20%) 600 85.28 kg 2.84 kg 19.90 kg

Look at the last column. Over a seven-day delivery, the difference between an average month and a busy one is 3.32 kg of wax. That is the size of the risk while an order is in transit: not 14 kg, not a month, but a little over three kilos. The quiet month needs no buffer at all. If sales run 20% low, your stock simply lasts longer and the next order goes in a few days later. A reorder-point system corrects the low side on its own. Only the high side needs cover.

Is your 20% noise or a season?
Before you buffer a swing, check whether it is predictable. If the busy months are always October–November and the quiet one is always the monsoon, that is a season, and a season is planned, not buffered: you raise the order for those months. The Diwali page does exactly that. Safety stock is for the swing you cannot see coming.

Sizing the buffer

Safety stock has to last from the moment you could have noticed the busy month until the next delivery lands. That window has two parts. The first is the supplier's lead time, here seven days, which is the reader's own figure; CSI does not publish delivery times. The second is how long you go between looks at the shelf. If you watch stock at every pour, the second part is zero. If you check on Mondays, it is seven days. If you place one order on the 1st of each month, it is thirty. The formula is simple: safety stock = swing × daily use × (lead time + days between checks).

20% swing · 2.37 kg a day · 7-day delivery · CSI 464 at ₹507.40 / kg
Five ways to buffer the same swing
How you work Window Safety stock Value As sealed packs Why
Watch every pour 7 days 3.32 kg ₹1,682.84 3 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g You see the shelf daily and order the moment it crosses the line
Weekly stock check 14 days 6.63 kg ₹3,365.69 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg You look once a week, so the buffer covers the week until your next look plus the delivery
Fortnightly check 21 days 9.95 kg ₹5,048.53 1 × 10 kg Two weeks between looks, plus the delivery
Fixed monthly order 37 days 17.53 kg ₹8,895.03 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg One order on the 1st of every month, whatever the shelf says
Keep an extra month 30 days of full use 71.07 kg ₹36,060.92 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g Covers the supplier failing entirely, not a 20% swing

The swing is the same in every row. What changes is how long the buffer must last, and so how much wax sits unused. Moving from a fixed monthly order to a weekly check cuts the buffer from 17.53 kg to 6.63 kg: 10.90 kg less wax, ₹5,529.34 of cash freed, for ten minutes on a Monday. That is the cheapest way to cut safety stock, and it costs nothing at all.

Buffering 20% of the whole month. The instinctive answer is "sales can be 20% higher, so hold 20% of a month extra": 14.21 kg. It sounds prudent and it is the wrong window. If you order monthly on a fixed date, the real exposure is 37 days, so it is slightly too small. If you check weekly, it is about twice what you need. Either way, it is a number that was never calculated from how you actually order.

Is 20% the right swing to buffer? That depends on what the number is. If 20% is the worst month you have seen in a year of records, buffering it fully is conservative and sensible. If 20% is a typical month and some months go further, you are covering most months, not all. There is no universal figure. Look at your last twelve months, find the highest one against the average, and use that gap. If you only have three months of records, use the 20% and revisit after six more.

The CSI principle
Safety stock covers a window, not a month.
The window is the lead time plus the days between your stock checks. Buffer the upside of your swing for that window only. At 500 candles a month, a weekly check turns a 71.07 kg "extra month" into a 6.63 kg buffer that does the same job.

The reorder line

A buffer only works if the order goes in at the right moment. The reorder line is where the buffer and the average demand meet.

With a weekly check, the line has to cover everything you will use until the next delivery could possibly land. If you look on Monday and decide not to order, the next chance is the following Monday, and that order then takes seven days. So the line covers 14 days of average use plus the buffer: 33.17 kg + 6.63 kg = 39.80 kg. If you watch stock at every pour and order the day it crosses, the line is only 7 days of use plus the smaller buffer: 16.58 kg + 3.32 kg = 19.90 kg.

500 candles a month average · CSI 464 · order quantity one month
The line under each way of working
How you work Average use in the window Safety stock Order when stock is at or below Order
Watch every pour 16.58 kg 3.32 kg 19.90 kg 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g
Weekly stock check 33.17 kg 6.63 kg 39.80 kg 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g
Fortnightly check 49.75 kg 9.95 kg 59.70 kg 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g
Fixed monthly order 87.65 kg 17.53 kg 105.18 kg Order up to 37 days' use + buffer

The fixed monthly order works differently. You do not have a reorder line. Instead, on the 1st of every month you order enough to bring the shelf up to 37 days of average use plus the buffer, which is 105.18 kg, minus whatever is already there. If the shelf holds 20 kg on the 1st, you order about 85.18 kg. The more you have left, the less you order. That rule protects you in a busy month and stops stock piling up in a quiet one.

The buffer that quietly becomes working stock. A safety stock that gets used every month is not a buffer; it is an order quantity that is too small. If you dip into the sealed 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg more than once a quarter, either your average is higher than you think or your deliveries are slower than promised. Recalculate daily use from the last three months before you raise the buffer. The growth page shows how to do that without over-reacting.

What the buffer costs to hold

"Tying up cash" has a real cost, but it is smaller than most makers fear, and it should be weighed against what a stockout costs. The table below uses an example cost of money of 1.5% a month: the interest you pay on a loan, or the return you give up. Replace it with your own figure. It also uses an example gross margin of ₹150.00 per candle to price three days without wax. That figure is illustrative only; use your own margin.

Example figures — replace the 1.5% and the ₹150.00 margin with your own
Holding the buffer against running out
Policy Buffer value Monthly carrying cost (example 1.5%) Buffer as days of average use
Watch every pour ₹1,682.84 ₹25.24 1.4 days
Weekly stock check ₹3,365.69 ₹50.49 2.8 days
Fortnightly check ₹5,048.53 ₹75.73 4.2 days
Fixed monthly order ₹8,895.03 ₹133.43 7.4 days
Keep an extra month ₹36,060.92 ₹540.91 30.0 days

On those example figures, the weekly-check buffer costs about ₹50.49 a month to hold. Three days without wax at 16.67 candles a day is 50 candles not made, and at an example ₹150.00 margin that is ₹7,500.00 of margin not earned, before counting a lost wholesale customer. Seen that way, a few kilos of buffer is the cheapest insurance in the business. What does tie up real cash is the extra-month habit: ₹36,060.92 sitting still, which costs about ₹540.91 a month at the same example rate and gives no more protection against a 20% swing.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell you an extra month of wax if you asked. At 500 candles a month and a 20% swing, you do not need it. CSI 464 costs ₹507.40 a kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg alike, so a bigger stock does not buy a lower rate on the listed packs. It only buys shelf space you are paying for. Hold 6.63 kg, check weekly, and keep the rest of the money working.

Holding it as real packs

A buffer is easiest to protect if it is physically separate: sealed bags on their own shelf, opened only when the working stock has run out. For the weekly-check plan, 6.63 kg rounds up to 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg of CSI 464 for ₹3,551.80. The working stock arrives as a monthly order of 7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g, ₹36,285.40. Those 10 kg bags are CSI 464's largest listed pack; for more than about 100 kg in one order, ask on WhatsApp for a quote. No volume discount figure is published, so do not assume one.

That makes it the cheapest kilo to hold if it is already your wax. It is not a reason to switch. The same rule for fragrance

The swing applies to fragrance too, with one twist: it lands on individual scents, not on the total. Across all scents, 500 candles at 12 g of oil (12.36 g with allowance) use 6.18 kg a month, 206.00 g a day. On a weekly check with a 7-day delivery, the total fragrance buffer for a 20% swing is 20% × 206.00 g × 14 = 576.80 g, and the total reorder line is 3.46 kg. But you do not reorder "fragrance"; you reorder Lavender or Sandalwood. One scent can run 50% over while another runs flat. The buffer has to be split scent by scent, weighted by how fast each sells and how much each one swings.

That split is its own calculation, with a real complication: slow sellers need a buffer that can be larger than their average month, because a bottle is the smallest thing you can buy. Fragrance inventory across 10 scents builds the per-scent table, and fast and slow scents on a two-week lead sets the reorder line for each. For the base model with one fragrance, see the hub page for 100 candles a month.

1
Find your real swingList the last six to twelve months of candles sold. Take the highest month against the average. That percentage, not a guess, is your swing. If one month stands out for a known reason (Diwali, one wholesale order), plan it separately and leave it out.
2
Convert average sales to daily waxCandles a month × wax per candle (finished weight × (1 − load), plus your loss allowance) ÷ 30. Here: 500 × 142.14 g ÷ 30 = 2.37 kg a day.
3
Pick how often you will checkEvery pour, weekly, fortnightly or a fixed monthly order. Be honest: the buffer is only valid if you actually check that often.
4
Buffer = swing × daily use × windowWindow = lead time + days between checks. Weekly with a 7-day delivery: 20% × 2.37 kg × 14 = 6.63 kg.
5
Set the line and the orderLine = daily use × window + buffer (39.80 kg). Order = one month rounded to real packs (7 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g).
6
Seal the buffer and review quarterlyKeep the buffer as sealed bags. Every quarter, check how often you opened them. Never: consider trimming. More than once: recalculate the average. Two weeks of safety stock shows the fixed-days alternative if you prefer a simpler rule.
Checking the shelf every week costs nothing. Here it does the same job as about 11 kg of extra wax.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A safety-stock page is where a supplier would normally say "hold more". This one shows a 500-candle maker that a weekly shelf check does the work of about 11 kg of extra wax. On the listed prices, holding more does not lower the rate, except on Natural Soy Pearl, which we say plainly.

Every wax price here comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Consumption, safety stock, reorder lines and cash figures are arithmetic on the reader's figures (500 candles a month, a 20% swing) and on labelled assumptions, and are shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 150 g candle, 8% load, 3% allowance, 7-day delivery, 1.5% monthly cost of money and ₹150.00 example margin are assumptions to be replaced with your own. CSI does not publish delivery times or volume discounts. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate safety stock for a candle business with variable demand?
Safety stock = your swing (as a %) × average daily use × (supplier lead time + days between stock checks). For 500 × 150 g candles a month, a 20% swing, a 7-day delivery and a weekly check: 20% × 2.37 kg × 14 = 6.63 kg of wax.
How much extra wax should I keep if my sales vary by 20%?
Not 20% of a month. Only 20% of the use in your protection window. For 500 candles a month that is 3.32 kg if you watch stock daily, 6.63 kg with weekly checks and 17.53 kg if you order once a month on a fixed date.
Does checking stock more often really reduce safety stock?
Yes. The buffer has to last until the next chance to reorder plus the delivery. Weekly instead of monthly cuts this plan's buffer from 17.53 kg to 6.63 kg, freeing ₹5,529.34 of CSI 464.
Is it cheaper to hold safety stock in bigger wax packs?
Only for Natural Soy Pearl Wax (₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg). Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 464 cost the same per kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg. Hold the buffer in whatever sealed packs are easiest to keep separate.
Should the low months reduce my safety stock?
No. A quiet month simply delays the next order under a reorder-line system. Only the high side of the swing needs a buffer. If quiet and busy months are predictable, plan them as seasons instead: I'm Entering Diwali with Average Sales of 100 Candles a Week but Expect Demand to Triple — How Much Wax and Fragrance Should I Secure Beforehand?.
What is the reorder point for 500 candles a month?
With 150 g candles at 8%, a 3% allowance, a 7-day delivery and a weekly check: order when the wax shelf is at or below 39.80 kg. If you watch stock at every pour, the line is 19.90 kg. The hub page explains the base formula.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Reader's figures: 500 candles a month, demand varying by 20%. Working assumptions: 150 g finished candle, 8% fragrance load as a share of finished weight (12 g oil + 138 g wax), 3% pour and test allowance, 30-day month, 7-day supplier delivery (CSI does not publish delivery times). Safety stock = swing × average daily use × (lead time + days between stock checks). Example figures to be replaced by the reader: 1.5% monthly cost of money, ₹150.00 gross margin per candle. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 10% (CSI 464) and 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits; no ceiling is published here for Natural Soy Pearl Wax. Totals exclude freight and GST. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
