I Sell Individual Candles and Gift Sets — How Do I Calculate Margins Correctly When the Same Raw Materials Are Used Across Both?
Share
Which earns more in the worked example? The ₹799 single keeps ₹457.83 (57.3%) after materials and example packaging. The ₹1,199 trio keeps ₹716.35 (59.7%). The set wins on both, but only at that price: at ₹999 it would keep 51.7%.
What is the most common mistake? Dividing the month's material bill equally across everything sold. It makes the single look worse (52.5%) and the set look better (68.3%) than they are. See three wrong methods.
Does using the same oils in both help? Yes, on buying rather than margin. Raat Ki Rani in both products needs 1,484 g a month instead of two smaller quantities, so it is used faster and is less likely to be stranded. Pooling explains.
Standard costing from grams
The method that solves this is called standard costing, and it is simpler than it sounds. For every product you write a recipe: grams of wax, grams of each oil, one wick, one container, and a packaging list. Price each line at your current buying rate. That total is the product's standard cost. Shared bulk materials never need allocating, because the recipe already says how much of them each product uses.
| Material | Buying pack | Rate | Used in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 1 kg ₹599.00 | ₹0.599 / g | single and set |
| Raat Ki Rani Fragrance Oil | 100 g ₹700.00 | ₹7.00 / g | single and set |
| Jasmine Fragrance Oil | 100 g ₹430.00 | ₹4.30 / g | set |
| Saffron Cedarwood Fragrance Oil | 100 g ₹696.20 | ₹6.962 / g | set |
| Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 | 100 ₹590.00 | ₹5.90 each | single and set |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 5 ₹354.00 | ₹70.80 each | single |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g fill | 12 ₹360.00 | ₹30.00 each | set |
Two notes on the rates. First, use the rate you actually buy at. If you buy Raat Ki Rani in 100 g bottles, cost it at ₹7.00 a gram, not the 1 kg rate of ₹6.77 you might move to later. Second, if the set's oils were bought as 15 g testers for a trial run, cost that trial at the tester rate, which is higher — 15 g of Raat Ki Rani is ₹8.67 a gram. A set that only works at bulk rates is a set to launch once volume is proven. The wick is costed as Eco Thin C1 in both products for comparison; wick sizing for a tin or a jar is not published here, so confirm yours with a burn test.
Single against set, costed properly
Here are both products line by line. The single is a 200 g candle: 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Each tin in the set holds its published 85 g: 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax at the same 8%.
| Line | Single · 200 g Raat Ki Rani | Set · 3 × 85 g tins |
|---|---|---|
| Oil | 16 g · ₹112.00 | Jasmine ₹29.24 + Raat Ki Rani ₹47.60 + Saffron Cedarwood ₹47.34 = ₹124.18 |
| Wax | 184 g · ₹110.22 | 3 × 78.2 g · ₹140.52 |
| Wicks | ₹5.90 | 3 × ₹5.90 = ₹17.70 |
| Container | White Matte jar ₹70.80 | 3 × tin ₹30.00 = ₹90.00 |
| Materials | ₹298.92 | ₹372.40 |
| Packaging (example) | label, box, tissue · ₹42.25 | 3 tin labels, gift box, insert, ribbon, card, tissue · ₹110.25 |
| Standard cost | ₹341.17 | ₹482.65 |
| Selling price | ₹799.00 | ₹1,199.00 |
| Left after materials and packaging | ₹457.83 | ₹716.35 |
| Gross margin on price | 57.3% | 59.7% |
| Markup on cost | 134.2% | 148.4% |
| Left per gram of candle | ₹2.29 | ₹2.81 |
The set sells for ₹400 more and keeps ₹258.52 more per sale. At ₹1,199 it also keeps a slightly larger share of its price, 59.7% against 57.3%, and more per gram of candle. That is not automatic. The set's wicks, tins and packaging cost ₹217.95 against ₹118.95 for the single's wick, jar and packaging. It comes out ahead only because ₹1,199 for 255 g of candle is ₹4.70 a gram, against ₹4.00 a gram for the single. Price the same set at ₹999 and it keeps ₹516.35, a 51.7% margin — below the single. The standard cost is what lets you see that line before you print a price tag.
Three wrong ways to share the bill
Suppose a month sells 80 singles and 30 sets. The true materials-and-packaging cost of that month is ₹41,773.10: ₹27,293.60 for the singles and ₹14,479.50 for the sets. Here is what three common shortcuts do with the same total.
| Method | Single: cost | Single: margin | Set: cost | Set: margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard cost from grams (correct) | ₹341.17 | 57.3% | ₹482.65 | 59.7% |
| Equal per product sold | ₹379.76 | 52.5% | ₹379.76 | 68.3% |
| By share of revenue | ₹334.13 | 58.2% | ₹501.41 | 58.2% |
| By grams of candle | ₹353.26 | 55.8% | ₹450.41 | 62.4% |
Equal per product treats a trio of tins like one jar, so it overcharges the single and flatters the set. By revenue gives every product the same margin by construction — 58.2% for both — which makes the comparison you wanted impossible. By grams of candle sounds scientific but ignores that the set's cost is driven by its three tins, three wicks and gift box, not its wax; it undercharges the set by ₹32.24. Only the standard cost reflects what each product physically consumed.
Where allocation is unavoidable — test burns, R&D testers, a failed batch of wax that fed both products — pick one rule and apply it every month. Grams of candle is a reasonable rule for those, because they really are driven by how much wax and oil you pour. The wastage post shows how to measure those losses first.
Where sharing materials really helps
Sharing materials does not change margins, but it changes buying. In the example month, Raat Ki Rani goes into both products: 1,280 g for singles and 204 g for sets, 1,484 g in all. Jasmine and Saffron Cedarwood each need 204 g, only for sets. A scent used across both products turns over faster, so a bigger pack is less likely to sit unused.
| Oil | Used in | Grams a month | Sensible buy | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raat Ki Rani | single + set | 1,484 g | 1 × 1 kg + 5 × 100 g (1,500 g) | ₹10,274.00 |
| Jasmine | set | 204 g | 3 × 100 g (300 g) | ₹1,290.00 |
| Saffron Cedarwood | set | 204 g | 3 × 100 g (300 g) | ₹2,088.60 |
Raat Ki Rani's 1 kg costs ₹6.77 a gram against ₹7.00 for the 100 g, a small saving, and with 1,484 g a month it will not sit. The set-only oils are better bought in 100 g bottles until the set proves itself: the leftover 96 g of each carries forward at cost. Note Saffron Cedarwood's 500 g at ₹2,584.20 (₹5.17 a gram) is much cheaper per gram than its 100 g or 1 kg, one of the oddities in the catalogue worth knowing if volume grows. The bestseller fragrance post covers when to move a scent to 1 kg.
Pricing the set
Once each product has a standard cost, pricing the set is a choice you can see. At ₹1,199 the set keeps 59.7% after materials and packaging. To match the single's 57.3% it needs at least ₹1,130.34; below that it keeps a thinner share. Many makers accept that for a festive price point, because a set lifts the average order and shares courier and per-order packing across three candles. What matters is that you choose it knowingly, not discover it later.
The oils in both products
The worked range uses Indian florals and a warm wood, a combination that suits festive and wedding gifting in the November–February wedding season. Here are the two oils with the most interesting pack maths.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Singles at 16 g | Tins at 6.8 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹130.00 | ₹8.67 | 0.94 | 2.21 |
| 50 g | ₹370.00 | ₹7.40 | 3.12 | 7.35 |
| 100 g | ₹700.00 | ₹7.00 | 6.25 | 14.71 |
| 500 g | ₹3,387.00 | ₹6.77 | 31.25 | 73.53 |
| 1 kg | ₹6,774.00 | ₹6.77 | 62.50 | 147.06 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Tins at 6.8 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹103.84 | ₹6.92 | 2.21 |
| 50 g | ₹354.00 | ₹7.08 | 7.35 |
| 100 g | ₹696.20 | ₹6.96 | 14.71 |
| 500 g | ₹2,584.20 | ₹5.17 | 73.53 |
| 1 kg | ₹6,867.60 | ₹6.87 | 147.06 |

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A gift set with three oils sells more fragrance than a single with one, and it would be easy to promote sets as always the more profitable product. At our example prices the set does keep a slightly larger share, but only because it is priced higher per gram of candle; at ₹999 it would keep less than the single. This page shows both, because the price decides it, not the format.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; golden tin and tissue paper prices are from CSI's catalogue for this series.
