100 finished candles · plus burn-test samples
Test candles are whole candles. In 85 g tins, a Standard programme — two wick sizes, shelf candles, first-pour checks and a retained candle — is 11 candles, adding 11 tins, 903 g of wax and 79 g of oil to a 100-tin order.
₹1,479.92
added to the CSI order by a Standard 11-candle test programme for 100 saleable 85 g tins · ₹14.80 per saleable tin · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many test candles? Minimal 4, Standard 11, Extended 17 — stage-one candles before production plus checks from the production lot.

How many extra tins and wicks? Standard: +11 tins (packs of 12) and +11 wicks including the second sample pack.

How much extra wax and oil? Standard: +903.2 g of wax and +78.5 g of oil at 8% in 85 g tins.

What does it add? ₹1,479.92 to the CSI order (₹14.80 per saleable tin). Minimal adds ₹292.04; Extended ₹2,330.80.
The short answer
Answer: Budget 11 extra candles for a Standard programme on 100 tins: +11 tins, +11 wicks, +903 g wax, +79 g oil — ₹1,479.92 at CSI.
Why: Each test candle consumes a full candle of every material. Stage-one candles decide the wick before production; production checks and a retained candle protect the batch.
Method: Count test candles first → add them as whole candles at the top of the stack → rejects → pour loss → round to packs. Buy wax and containers now, production oil and wicks after stage one.

Tins have no glass breakage line; rejects and pour loss still apply.
One hundred saleable 85 g tins, and the candles poured around them in a Standard programme: 8 stage-one test candles before production, 3 production-lot candles (two first-pour checks and one retained candle), and 4 candles of reject allowance. Candle counts and allowances are labelled working practices.
Straight answer
I want 100 finished candles but also need burn-test samples — how many additional jars, wicks, wax and fragrance should I budget for?
Budget the test candles as whole candles of every material — for a Standard programme, 11 of them. In the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g fill) (85 g published fill) at 8% Lemongrass and Lime in CSI 464, that is 8 stage-one candles before production (two Eco wick sizes × two matched burns, one full-life burn and one shelf candle) plus 3 from the production lot (two first-pour checks and one retained candle). Against an order with no testing, it adds +11 tins, +11 wicks, +903.2 g of wax and +78.5 g of oil — ₹1,479.92 in CSI materials, or ₹14.80 per saleable tin. A Minimal programme (one wick) is 4 candles and ₹292.04; an Extended one (second load, transit check) is 17 and ₹2,330.80. Buy wax, tins and sample wicks now; buy production oil and wicks after stage one passes.
One line: count test candles first, add them as whole candles, then buffer the rest.
For 100 finished candles in 85 g tins with a standard burn-test programme, budget 11 extra candles: 8 test candles before production and 3 checks from the production lot. Over a no-test order that is +11 tins, +11 wicks, +903 g of wax and +79 g of oil — ₹1,479.92 more in CSI materials. Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g fill) is ₹360.00 for 12.

Test candles are candles: budget every material for them

A burn-test sample is not a free extra. It is a whole candle of wax, oil, wick and container that will never be sold.

This page uses the one CSI container whose fill weight is published: the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g fill), listed with an 85 g fill in packs of 12 at ₹360.00 (₹30.00 a tin). That removes the usual guesswork about fill, so the test budget can be exact. At an 8% load — CSI's working default, inside Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464's stated 10% ceiling — each tin holds 6.8 g of Lemongrass and Lime and 78.2 g of wax. Every test candle needs exactly that, plus a wick, a sticker and a tin.

Burn-test samples fall into two groups, and they are bought at different times. Stage-one candles are poured before the production order, to decide the wick (and sometimes the load); they come from small bottles and sample wick packs. Production checks are poured from the production lot: a couple of first-pour candles burned before the rest are labelled, and a retained candle kept from every batch for later comparison. The first group decides what to buy; the second protects what you have bought.

Candle counts are labelled working practices — set your own
Three test programmes for 100 tins
Programme What it covers Stage-one candles Production checks Test candles in all
Minimal one wick: 2 matched burns + 1 full-life; 1 retained candle from the lot 3 1 4
Standard two Eco sizes × (2 burns + 1 full-life + 1 shelf); 2 first-pour checks + 1 retained 8 3 11
Extended Standard + 3 at a second load + 3 for a transit check; same production checks 14 3 17
The CSI principle
Count test candles before you count anything else.
They are added as whole candles at the top of the allowance stack, so every later allowance — rejects, pour loss — is applied to an order that already includes them.

What each programme adds, material by material

Here is the additional purchase for each programme, measured against an order with no test candles at all (100 saleable tins with a 3% reject allowance, 5% pour loss and 4 spare wicks — labelled assumptions). Tins have no glass breakage line, so the container count is simply candles poured, rounded to packs of 12. Stage-one wicks are sample packs: Eco Thin C1 as a 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock) and, in the two-wick programmes, Eco Thick C2 as a 10-pack (₹94.40).

Programme Extra test candles Extra tins Extra wicks Extra wax Extra oil Extra ₹ (CSI)
Minimal 4 +4 +4 +328.4 g +28.6 g +₹292.04
Standard 11 +11 +11 +903.2 g +78.5 g +₹1,479.92
Extended 17 +17 +17 +1,395.9 g +121.4 g +₹2,330.80

Two things stand out. First, the grams are small: a test tin is 78.2 g of wax and 6.8 g of oil, so even the extended programme adds well under 2 kg of wax. Second, the rupees do not track the candle count neatly, because every line rounds to a pack. Tins come in twelves, wicks in twenties and tens, and the stage-one oil comes from small bottles that cost more per gram than production bottles. A material cost of roughly ₹110.94 per tin at production rates (wax, oil, wick and tin; excluding labour) is a fair way to sanity-check any line.

The usual under-budget: testing out of the production order. If the 11 test candles are poured from materials bought for 100 + rejects, the run ends 11 candles short — or the reject allowance quietly becomes the test budget and there is nothing left for real rejects. Fix: put the test candles at the top of the stack, as whole candles, and buy for them on purpose.

The Standard programme, built up step by step

The Standard programme is the sensible default for a first 100-candle run: two wick sizes tested side by side, a shelf candle for each, two first-pour checks and one retained candle. Here is its allowance stack, followed by the full priced order.

If Thick C2 wins instead, the production wick line changes: Thick C2 is ₹9.44 a wick, and its sample 10-pack leaves only a couple after four candles, so most of the 111 come from a 100-pack (₹944.00) plus a 20-pack or 10-pack. That is the one line in this order that depends on the test result; the wick sample-ladder post goes through it rung by rung.

What each test candle is for

Every test candle should answer one question. If you cannot say which, it is not a test — it is a spare.
1
Matched-burn candles (2 per wick)Burned together in the same room, 3–4 hours per cycle with full cool-down (a commonly used working practice). Record time to full melt pool, pool width and depth, flame height, soot, mushrooming and how warm the tin feels at a fixed point.
2
Full-life candle (1 per wick)Burned cycle after cycle to the end of usable wax. Late tunnelling, a flame that grows as the level drops, or a hot tin base only show up here. A shallow 85 g tin reaches its base quickly, so this candle matters.
3
Shelf candle (1 per wick)Never lit. Stored in your warmest storage spot and checked for sweating, frosting and top appearance at labelled checkpoints, for example 7 and 14 days. CSI publishes no storage or heat data for any wax.
4
First-pour checks (2 from the production lot)Burned before the rest of the batch is labelled. They confirm that the production wax bag, oil bottle and wick behave like the stage-one candles. If they do not, stop and compare against the retained stage-one shelf candle.
5
Retained candle (1 per batch)Kept unlit, labelled with the batch date and the order dates of the wax and oil. CSI publishes no lot numbers or batch-consistency data, so this candle is your reference if a customer reports a problem or a reorder behaves differently.
6
Extended only: second load and transit checkThree candles at an alternative load (6% vs 8% or 10% vs 8%) and three sent through your real courier route with a cheap min/max thermometer in the parcel. Transit temperatures are yours to measure; CSI publishes no heat-survival figures.
Use tins from the same pack for the tests
Pour the stage-one candles in tins from the same 12-pack you will draw production from, and centre the wicks the same way — CSI lists a wick centering device at ₹118.00 for five. A test candle that differs from production in any material is answering a different question.

Is the test budget worth it on 100 tins?

The Standard programme adds ₹1,479.92 to a 100-tin order, which is ₹14.80 per saleable tin. Set that against the cost of finding a wick problem after the run: 100 tins of wax and oil that may need remelting or relabelling, a production wick pack that may be the wrong size, and customers who received a tin that tunnels. The minimal programme is cheaper at ₹292.04, but it tests one wick only — if that wick fails, you are back to buying samples with production waiting.

Extended 17 132 1 × 10 kg ₹15,196.40 ₹151.96
Argued against our own interest, plainly. The Extended programme sells more tins, wax and oil than the Standard one. For a first run in a single scent and a single tin, the Standard programme answers the questions that decide the production order; the second-load and transit candles are worth adding only if you are genuinely unsure of the load or ship long distances in hot months. Do not let a test programme grow just because test candles are cheap — each one should answer a question you would act on.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A bigger test programme sells more of our stock; this page recommends the Standard programme for a first run and says plainly when the Extended one is not worth it. We publish no burn, throw or heat-survival data, which is why the test candles exist.

The Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g fill is CSI's published figure. Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026; tins, wicks and stickers were re-checked 4 October 2026. Frequently asked questions

How many test candles should I make before selling?
A working default for a first run is 11 for 100 candles: two candles per wick option for matched burns, one full-life and one shelf candle per wick, two first-pour checks and one retained candle. Adjust to the questions you actually need answered.
How much extra wax do I need for test candles?
One candle's wax per test candle, plus pour loss. In an 85 g tin at 8% that is 78.2 g each, so a Standard programme adds about 903 g.
Should test candles come out of my production materials?
No — budget them separately at the top of the order. Otherwise the run ends short, or the reject allowance is used up by tests before any real rejects appear.
Why keep a retained candle from each batch?
It is your reference if a customer reports a problem or a reorder behaves differently. CSI publishes no lot numbers or batch-consistency data, so record the order dates on it.
Do candle tins need a breakage allowance?
Aluminium tins do not break like glass, so this page uses none; check for dents on arrival and add your own allowance if your records show damage.
What is the fill weight of CSI's candle tins?
The Golden Aluminium Tin is listed with an 85 g fill, in packs of 12. It is one of only two CSI containers with a published fill; for all others, weigh a test pour.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; 85 g at 8% = 6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax). The 85 g fill is CSI's published figure for the Golden Aluminium Tin. Test-programme candle counts, 3–4 hour burn cycles, 7/14-day checkpoints, 8% load, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 4 spare wicks, no breakage line for tins and the example label cost are labelled working assumptions; Extended-programme candles are budgeted at 8% even where a second load is tested.
