Fragrance Formulation · Blend Conversion
A 50/30/20 blend is a recipe for the fragrance, not for the batch. The batch decides how many grams of fragrance there are; the recipe decides how to share them. Here is the split for a 1 kg wax batch, done both ways, so you can pick the convention and pour.
86.96 g
of blend for 1,000 g of wax at a true 8% — 43.48 g vanilla, 26.09 g coffee, 17.39 g in the caramel slot · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many grams for 1 kg of wax at 8%? For a true 8% on 1,000 g of wax: 86.96 g of blend — 43.48 g vanilla, 26.09 g coffee, 17.39 g caramel slot. The batch weighs 1,086.96 g.

And if I want a 1 kg finished batch? 80 g of blend and 920 g of wax: 40.00 g vanilla, 24.00 g coffee, 16.00 g caramel slot. That is exactly five 200 g candles.

Can I just add 80 g to 1 kg of wax? You can, but the true load is 80 ÷ 1,080 = 7.41%, not 8%. Fine if you write it down that way; not fine if you think you poured 8%.

Does CSI sell a caramel fragrance oil? No oil in CSI's Fragrance Oils collection is titled Caramel. You can test Chocolate Fudge or Cinnamon Vanilla in the 20% slot, but they are different fragrances; judge them in wax against your brief. See the caramel slot.
The short answer
1 kg wax, true 8%: Blend = 1,000 × 0.08 ÷ 0.92 = 86.96 g → 43.48 g vanilla + 26.09 g coffee + 17.39 g third oil. Batch 1,086.96 g.
1 kg finished, 8%: Blend = 80 g → 40.00 + 24.00 + 16.00 g, wax 920 g, five 200 g candles.
Caramel: No CSI oil is titled Caramel. Chocolate Fudge (15 g ₹93.22) and Cinnamon Vanilla (15 g ₹106.20) can be tested in the 20% slot — as themselves, not as caramel.
50 / 30 / 20 in grams — the same recipe under three ways of reading "8% in a 1 kg batch" Vanilla 43.48 g Coffee 26.09 g 20% slot 17.39 g Blend 86.96 g Fixed 1 kg wax, true 8% 1,000 g wax · 1,086.96 g batch True load 8.00% ✓ Vanilla 40.00 g Coffee 24.00 g 20% slot 16.00 g Blend 80.00 g 1 kg finished, true 8% 920 g wax · 1,000 g batch True load 8.00% ✓ Vanilla 40.00 g Coffee 24.00 g 20% slot 16.00 g Blend 80.00 g 80 g into 1 kg wax 1,000 g wax · 1,080 g batch True load 7.41% — under Column heights to scale (grams of blend). The recipe is identical; only the load reading differs.
The same 50/30/20 recipe under three readings of "8% in a 1 kg batch". Left: 1,000 g of wax at a true 8% needs 86.96 g of blend. Centre: a 1,000 g finished batch at 8% needs 80 g. Right: 80 g stirred into 1,000 g of wax gives a 7.41% candle. The ratio inside each column is identical.
Straight answer
I want a candle with 50% vanilla, 30% coffee and 20% caramel — how do I convert that blend into grams for a 1 kg wax batch?
First decide what "1 kg" and "8%" mean, because there are two honest readings. If you have 1,000 g of wax and want a true 8% candle, the blend is 1,000 × 0.08 ÷ 0.92 = 86.96 g: 43.48 g vanilla, 26.09 g coffee and 17.39 g caramel, for a 1,086.96 g batch. If you want 1 kg of finished candle, the blend is 80 g and the wax 920 g: 40.00 g, 24.00 g and 16.00 g, which pours exactly five 200 g candles. Adding 80 g to a full 1,000 g of wax is a third option, but it gives 7.41%, not 8%. Either of the first two is correct; write down which you used. Now the caramel. CSI has no fragrance oil titled Caramel. We will not pretend otherwise. You can test Chocolate Fudge or Cinnamon Vanilla in the 20% slot, judged as what they are, against a control candle with no third oil. For the other two slots, Dark Vanilla or Vanilla Bean and Roasted Coffee all come in 15 g testers. Test the recipe in three candles before committing the kilo.
One line: 1 kg wax at a true 8%: 43.48 + 26.09 + 17.39 g. 1 kg finished: 40 + 24 + 16 g. The caramel slot needs testing, not a label.
The two anchor oils both come as 15 g testers: Dark Vanilla at ₹130.00 and Roasted Coffee at ₹93.22. For the 20% slot, test Chocolate Fudge (₹93.22) and Cinnamon Vanilla (₹106.20) side by side. The rolling shopping list shows which sizes cover the test and the 1 kg batch without waste.

The conversion, both ways

Fifty, thirty, twenty describes the fragrance. It says nothing yet about how much fragrance the batch holds.

A blend ratio is a recipe for one thing: the fragrance. It has to be combined with a second decision, the load, before it turns into grams. CSI's convention, used throughout this series, is that load is the share of the finished candle that is fragrance. The ratio then divides that fragrance: each component = blend grams × its share. The blending hub sets out the rule. This page applies it to one specific batch: 1 kg, 8%, 50/30/20.

The phrase "1 kg wax batch" is where the confusion starts. Some makers mean they have a 1 kg bag of wax and will use all of it. Others mean they want 1 kg of candle at the end. The two need different amounts of fragrance, and both are legitimate. The table gives both, plus the shortcut many people take without realising it changes the load.

50% vanilla · 30% coffee · 20% caramel slot · 8% target
Your recipe in grams, three readings of "1 kg at 8%"
Reading Wax Blend Vanilla 50% Coffee 30% Caramel slot 20% Batch True load
A · I have 1,000 g of wax 1,000.00 g 86.96 g 43.48 g 26.09 g 17.39 g 1,086.96 g 8.00%
B · I want 1,000 g of candle 920.00 g 80.00 g 40.00 g 24.00 g 16.00 g 1,000.00 g 8.00%
C · 80 g added to 1,000 g of wax 1,000.00 g 80.00 g 40.00 g 24.00 g 16.00 g 1,080.00 g 7.41%

Reading A uses the fixed-wax formula: blend = wax × load ÷ (1 − load). It is the right one when the wax weight is the thing you are not going to change, for example a single 1 kg bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. The batch comes out at 1,086.96 g, which is 5.43 candles of 200 g: five full candles and 86.96 g over. Pour the extra as a test candle or a wax-melt sample; do not stretch it across the five jars, or each candle will be heavier than its label.

Reading B uses the finished-weight formula directly: blend = 1,000 × 0.08 = 80 g, wax = 920 g. It is the tidier choice when you are filling a known number of jars, because five 200 g candles is exactly 1,000 g. You will have 80 g of Chunks left in the bag for the next batch.

Reading C is the one to watch. Stirring 80 g of blend into a full kilo of wax is common, and the candle it makes may be perfectly good. It is just a 7.41% candle, not an 8% one. That matters when you compare it against a test you believe was 8%, or when you scale it up. 80 g or 86.96 g? covers the two conventions in detail, and the 10 kg version shows how the gap grows at production scale.

Rounding for the scale
On a scale that reads to 0.1 g, weigh 43.5 g, 26.1 g and 17.4 g for reading A. The rounding changes the blend by less than 0.1 g, which is less than 0.01% of the batch. On a 1 g scale, round to 43, 26 and 17 g and accept that the caramel slot's share can drift by a few per cent. For recipes you will repeat, a finer scale pays for itself; scaling a blend without weighing errors covers tolerances.

There is no CSI oil called Caramel

The honest answer first: nothing in CSI's Fragrance Oils collection is titled Caramel. The 20% slot needs a decision, not a label.

On the 24 September 2026 pull, the Fragrance Oils collection lists 93 products and none of them is called Caramel, Salted Caramel or Toffee. We could point you at the nearest gourmand and call it caramel. We are not going to, because you would be building a candle description on our guess about your nose. What you can do is test candidate oils in the 20% slot, judged as what they are, and decide whether the finished candle meets your brief. Two candidates are in stock in 15 g testers:

Candidates for the 20% slot · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
What to test in the caramel slot, and what not to claim
Candidate 15 g 50 g Why test it here What not to claim
Chocolate Fudge Fragrance Oil ₹93.22 ₹198.24 (100 g out of stock) A confectionery gourmand by name; worth testing as a sweet, dessert-leaning third note beside vanilla and coffee That it smells like caramel. Describe the candle by what your testers smell, not by the recipe card
Cinnamon Vanilla Fragrance Oil ₹106.20 ₹271.40 Adds warmth and spice by name, and a second vanilla source; worth testing if you want a spiced dessert direction That it is caramel. It also shifts the vanilla share upward, so the recipe is effectively more vanilla-led
No third oil (control) — — Vanilla and coffee re-scaled to 62.5/37.5, so you can tell whether the third slot adds anything at all Nothing — it is the baseline

The control matters more than it looks. A third oil at 20% of an 8% blend is only 1.6% of the candle. It may change the character noticeably, or it may barely register once the candle is burning. Without a candle that leaves it out, you cannot tell which. Why two good oils can make a weak blend explains how dilution works inside a blend, and evaluating blends in wax explains why the bottle cannot settle this for you.

Name the candle after what it smells like, not what went in. If your testers call the Chocolate Fudge version "mocha dessert", sell it as that. Calling it "caramel" because the recipe card says caramel invites a customer to notice the gap. If you need a true caramel note for the brief, ask CSI on WhatsApp whether one can be sourced; no caramel oil is listed today and no restock or sourcing is promised here.

Choosing the vanilla and the coffee

The two anchor slots are simpler, because CSI lists oils that are named for them. For the vanilla slot, Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean are priced identically on the pull date: ₹130.00 for 15 g, ₹410.00 for 50 g, ₹790.00 for 100 g and ₹7,646.00 for 1 kg. Choosing between them is a matter of smelling both in wax. For the coffee slot, Roasted Coffee is the value choice at ₹93.22 for 15 g and ₹3.90 a gram at 100 g. Coffee Vanilla Tobacco is a richer, multi-note alternative from ₹449.00 for 50 g.

Anchor-slot options · per gram at each size · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Vanilla and coffee candidates, priced
Oil Slot Smallest size Per gram at 50 g Per gram at 100 g Per gram at 1 kg
Dark Vanilla Vanilla 50% 15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.20 ₹7.90 ₹7.65
Vanilla Bean Vanilla 50% 15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.20 ₹7.90 ₹7.65
Roasted Coffee Coffee 30% 15 g ₹93.22 ₹4.60 ₹3.90 ₹3.74
Coffee Vanilla Tobacco Coffee 30% (alternative) 50 g ₹449.00 ₹8.98 ₹8.99 ₹8.60

One caution on Coffee Vanilla Tobacco. Its name tells you it is already a multi-note profile, and it carries vanilla in the title. Putting it in the 30% coffee slot is not a like-for-like swap; it is a different recipe, and the vanilla-to-coffee balance you designed will move. That can be a good thing. Just test it as its own candle rather than assuming 50/30/20 still describes the result. If vanilla ends up dominating after cure, the coffee-vanilla cure-shift page is the next read.

The CSI principle
A recipe is only as honest as its weakest slot.
Vanilla and coffee are named, priced and in stock. The caramel slot is a hypothesis. Treat it like one: test it against a control, name the candle by what it smells like, and do not let a word on a recipe card make a promise the fragrance cannot keep.

Test the recipe before the kilo

Before you commit a kilo of wax and about 87 g of oil, pour three 200 g test candles on the same day from the same wax: one for each caramel-slot candidate and one control. Every candle is 8% of 200 g, so 16 g of blend and 184 g of wax. Only the recipe changes.

1
Premix each blend in its own beakerWeigh the components for T1, T2 and T3 into three labelled beakers. Stir each. A 16 g blend is small enough that a stray gram matters, so re-tare between oils.
2
Add to wax per the wax maker's instructionsFollow the fragrance-addition guidance on the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks product page. Stir each candle's blend in thoroughly; about two minutes is a common working practice at this size.
3
Cure all three togetherSame shelf, same temperature, same days. Gourmand blends are often described as shifting during cure, so compare them at the same cure age. A 7-day first look and a 14-day second look are sensible working checkpoints, not specifications; same-cure-age testing explains why.
4
Score cold, then hot, blindHave someone else number the candles so you do not know which is which. Score cold throw, then burn each alone in the same closed room for the same time. Ask two questions: how strong, and what does it smell like in your own words?
5
Decide the slot, then the batchIf neither candidate beats the control, drop the third slot and pour 62.5/37.5. If one wins, pour the 1 kg batch with it. If vanilla swamps the coffee in every version, move to a ratio ladder before you scale — the lavender-vanilla ladder shows the method.

The three candles use 26.00 g of vanilla and 15.60 g of coffee, so 15 g testers of the anchors will not cover them. For the vanilla, compare the routes honestly: a 50 g (₹410.00) covers the test but leaves only 24.00 g against the batch's 43.48 g, so you would buy again. The 100 g (₹790.00, ₹7.90 a gram) covers the test and the reading-A batch with 30.52 g to spare. The coffee needs 15.60 g, just over a tester, so the 50 g (₹230.00) is the right size and carries into the batch. The caramel-slot candidates only need 3.20 g each, so a 15 g tester of each is ample.

What the batch costs

Costing the 1 kg batch (reading A) with Chocolate Fudge in the 20% slot and every oil at its 50 g rate: Dark Vanilla ₹8.20 a gram, Roasted Coffee ₹4.60 and Chocolate Fudge ₹3.96. The blend averages ₹6.27 a gram.

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1 kg 1,000.00 g ₹0.60/g ₹599.00
Oil + wax, whole batch 1,086.96 g ₹1,144.47

Per 200 g candle, the same blend is 16 g at ₹6.27 a gram, which is ₹100.37 of fragrance. Add 184 g of Chunks (₹110.22), an Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80) and the material cost is ₹287.28, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. With Cinnamon Vanilla in the 20% slot the blend averages ₹6.57 a gram, ₹4.68 more per candle. Vanilla drives the cost: at ₹8.20 a gram it is half the blend by weight and 65.4% of the blend's cost.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The obvious upsell is the 1 kg of Dark Vanilla. For this recipe you do not need it yet. A 1 kg wax batch uses 43.48 g of vanilla, and the Dark Vanilla 1 kg is ₹7.65 a gram against ₹8.20 at 50 g, a difference of ₹24.09 on this batch. Buy 50 g or 100 g until the recipe is proven and you are pouring it every week. The per-gram step that actually matters is 15 g to 50 g, not 100 g to 1 kg.

Buy for the test, and let the leftovers carry into the batch. Nothing should sit in a drawer.

The list below is built so the test oils roll straight into the 1 kg batch. You buy once for the test, pour three candles, and top up only what the winning recipe still needs. CSI does not sell a blending kit, sample set or combo; you build it from single oils.

The test uses 552 g of the first kilo of wax, leaving 448 g for extra test pours. After the test, the vanilla and coffee already cover the reading-A batch. What is left to buy is a fresh 1 kg bag of wax and a 15 g top-up of the winning third oil, because the tester has 11.80 g left against the 17.39 g the batch needs: ₹692.22 with Chocolate Fudge or ₹705.20 with Cinnamon Vanilla. Reading B (80 g of blend, 920 g of wax) needs 16.00 g of the third oil, still more than the 11.80 g left, so the same 15 g top-up applies. If the control wins and you drop the third slot, you need no top-up oil at all. Plan the usual 3–5% extra for pour loss as a working assumption.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and does not sell pre-mixed blends. The commercially easy answer to "caramel" would be to label a nearby gourmand as one. We have not: no CSI oil is titled Caramel on the pull date, and the page says so in its first screen and names the candidates only as oils to test.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; the Chocolate Fudge 100 g is flagged as out of stock and not offered. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every gram figure is arithmetic on the stated load and ratio, shown to two decimals.

The 8% load, the 50/30/20 ratio and the three-candle test are the reader's recipe and a working test plan, not measured results; CSI publishes no throw, cure or scent-profile data for any oil. Cure checkpoints are labelled working checkpoints. For MSDS, IFRA documentation or help choosing the third oil, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil for 1 kg of soy wax at 8%?
For a true 8% on 1,000 g of wax, 86.96 g (1,000 × 0.08 ÷ 0.92). If you add 80 g to 1,000 g of wax instead, the candle is 7.41%. For 1 kg of finished candle at 8%, use 80 g of oil and 920 g of wax.
How do I convert a fragrance blend ratio into grams?
Work out the total blend grams from the batch and load, then multiply by each share. For 1,000 g of wax at a true 8%: 86.96 × 0.50 = 43.48 g, × 0.30 = 26.09 g, × 0.20 = 17.39 g. Check the three add back to the blend total.
Does CSI have a caramel fragrance oil for candles?
Not on the 24 September 2026 pull: no oil in the Fragrance Oils collection is titled Caramel. Chocolate Fudge and Cinnamon Vanilla can be tested in a caramel-style slot, as themselves. Ask on WhatsApp if you need a true caramel note sourced; nothing is promised here.
Which vanilla fragrance oil is best for a coffee vanilla candle?
CSI publishes no throw data, so there is no measured "best". Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean are priced identically (₹130.00 for 15 g); test both in the 50% slot against the same coffee and choose by a blind burn test.
How many 200 g candles does a 1 kg wax batch make?
At a true 8% on 1,000 g of wax, the batch is 1,086.96 g: five 200 g candles and 86.96 g over. For exactly five candles, use 920 g of wax and 80 g of blend.
Can I use Coffee Vanilla Tobacco as the coffee in my blend?
You can test it, but it is a multi-note oil with vanilla in its name, so it is not a like-for-like coffee. It moves the recipe's balance. Test it as its own candle rather than assuming 50/30/20 still describes the result. It starts at ₹449.00 for 50 g.
Convert, test, then pour
Pick your reading of "1 kg", test the caramel slot against a control, and let the test oils roll into the batch.
Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean from ₹130.00, Roasted Coffee from ₹93.22, Chocolate Fudge from ₹93.22, Cinnamon Vanilla from ₹106.20, and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo. Send us your recipe and we will check the grams.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load is the share of finished weight. Fixed-wax conversion: blend = wax × load ÷ (1 − load) = 86.96 g for 1,000 g at 8%. Adding 80 g to 1,000 g of wax gives 80 ÷ 1,080 = 7.41%. Component grams = blend × share. Per-candle material cost (₹287.28) = 16 g blend at ₹6.27/g + 184 g Chunks + wick ₹5.90 + jar ₹70.80, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. No CSI oil is titled Caramel on the pull date. The test plan, cure checkpoints and 3–5% wastage are working assumptions, not measured results. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
