Quick answers — read this first
How do I evaluate throw before a big order? A throw ladder: two waxes × three loads (6%, 8%, 10%) × three candles, coded, cold throw at 48 h, 7 and 14 days, hot throw in a fixed room at your selling cure age.

Does CSI sell a 25 kg carton? No. Container soy bags stop at 10 kg (Soy Pearl also 50 kg). Your 25 kg is 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg: ₹10,620.00 in Soy Pearl, ₹12,685.00 in CSI 464. Ask on WhatsApp about CSI 464's unlisted 25 kg format.

Why test three loads? Because the lowest load that passes sets your oil bill: each 2-point step adds ₹22.76 per candle here.

What does the ladder cost? ₹5,323.82 for 18 candles from 1 kg bags. See the priced kit.
The short answer
Answer: Test cold and hot throw in both waxes at 6%, 8% and 10%, blind, at fixed cure ages, from small bags. Buy the wax that reaches your throw floor at the lowest load, then size the carton.
Why: Cold throw comes from the solid surface, hot throw from the melt pool, and both shift during cure. The load that passes decides how much oil the whole carton needs.
Watch: CSI 464 is rated up to 10%; Soy Pearl has no ceiling published (6–10% is a labelled test range). Score only after a full pool; reject any load that sweats. Hold every variable fixed.
Cold throw and hot throw are measured on different days Example: Natural Soy Pearl vs CSI 464 · Dark Vanilla Oud at 6%, 8%, 10% · 3 candles per cell · checkpoints are labelled examples Pour day 48 h 7 days 14 days Full life COLD THROW shelf candle, unlit, blind sniff 0–5 sniff 0–5 sniff 0–5 HOT THROW 2 candles, fixed room, blind 30 & 60 min 30 & 60 min late burns LOAD LADDER 6% · 8% · 10% in each wax pour all 18 lowest load that passes Decide the load from hot throw at the same cure age, check it against cold throw — and only then size the big order. Every extra point of load is oil you will buy for every candle the 25 kg makes.
Cold throw is scored on the unlit shelf candle from about 48 hours; hot throw on matched burning pairs at your selling cure age, after a full pool. The ladder runs three loads in each wax so the result is the lowest load that passes — which sets the oil bill for every candle the bulk order makes. Checkpoints are labelled examples.
Straight answer
I want a soy wax that gives strong cold throw and hot throw — how do I evaluate fragrance performance before buying a 25 kg carton?
Run a throw ladder from small bags: two candidate waxes at three loads, three candles per cell, scored blind for cold throw at fixed cure checkpoints and for hot throw in a fixed room once each candle has a full pool. Cold throw comes from the solid surface and hot throw from the melt pool, so they are measured on different days, and both shift during cure. The result you want is the lowest load at which each wax reaches your throw floor without sweating or running hotter — because that load sets the oil bill for every candle the carton makes: here each two-point step adds ₹22.76 of Dark Vanilla Oud per 200 g candle. CSI lists no 25 kg carton; your 25 kg is two 10 kg bags and a 5 kg bag — ₹10,620.00 in Natural Soy Pearl, ₹12,685.00 in CSI 464 (ask on WhatsApp about CSI 464's unlisted 25 kg format). The 18-candle ladder costs ₹5,323.82.
One line: settle the wax and the load from 1 kg bags — the carton only multiplies a decision you have already made.
Before any carton, run the throw ladder on this page: Natural Soy Pearl and CSI 464, Dark Vanilla Oud at 6%, 8% and 10%, three 200 g candles per cell, from 1 kg bags. It costs ₹5,323.82 in CSI materials — about 15.9% of the materials that 25 kg of Soy Pearl candles would carry at 8%. Natural Soy Pearl Wax starts at ₹450.00 for 1 kg.

Evaluate throw from small bags; let the result size the carton

A 25 kg order is a fragrance decision as much as a wax decision. The load you settle on is the oil you buy for every candle it makes.

Strong cold throw and strong hot throw are two different measurements. Cold throw is what the unlit candle smells of — on the shelf, in the hand, when the lid comes off — and it sells the candle before it is ever lit. Hot throw is how far and how strongly the scent fills a room once the melt pool has formed. A wax can be good at one and ordinary at the other, and both change as the candle cures. So "evaluate fragrance performance" means a small, disciplined test of both, at the same cure ages, in the waxes you are considering, at more than one load — before a single carton is bought.

Two facts shape the plan. First, CSI lists no 25 kg carton. Our container soy waxes come in bags up to 10 kg, and Natural Soy Pearl also comes in a 50 kg pack. Twenty-five kilos is your figure, and we use it exactly as given: from CSI it means two 10 kg bags and one 5 kg bag. CSI 464's product page mentions a 25 kg format that is not a listed size — if you want it, ask on WhatsApp whether it is available; we do not price it here. Second, CSI publishes no throw data for any wax or oil. The only way to know which wax throws your oil well, and at what load, is the test below. It starts from 500 g and 1 kg bags, which is what they are for.

The example compares Natural Soy Pearl Wax — the cheapest container soy we sell and the only one with a real bulk break, ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg — with Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, rated up to 10% fragrance by its maker. The oil is Dark Vanilla Oud, a warm, heavy profile of the kind many makers rely on for strong rooms. Swap in your own pair and your own best-selling oil; the method does not change.

The CSI principle
Throw is judged at a load, at a cure age, against another candle — never in the abstract.
"Strong throw" means stronger than the other wax at the same load and age, or strong enough at a lower load. Those are the only two results that change what you buy.

What makes cold throw and hot throw different

In general candle-making practice, cold throw comes from fragrance evaporating slowly from the solid surface of the candle at room temperature. It depends on how much oil is in the wax, how the wax holds that oil as it crystallises during cure, and the oil itself — light top notes are commonly described as more noticeable cold, heavy base notes less so. Hot throw comes from the warm liquid pool. It depends on how wide and warm the pool gets with your wick, how readily the wax releases oil from that pool, and the room the candle burns in. Both change during cure: soy waxes are commonly described as continuing to settle for days to weeks after pouring, and many makers find throw shifts over that period.

That is why the two measurements sit on different days in the plan. Cold throw can be scored from about 48 hours on the unlit candle, and again at each checkpoint. Hot throw needs the candle cured to the age you will sell at, burned long enough for a full pool, in a fixed room. CSI's page for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states a cure of at least 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks; none of the other soy wax pages publish a cure time, so the checkpoints here — 48 hours, 7 days, 14 days — are labelled examples. Choose yours and use them for both waxes.

Cold throw Hot throw

Mainly driven by Load, how the set wax holds the oil, the oil's profile Pool width and warmth with your wick, how the wax releases oil, room size

How to score it Blind sniff 0–5 at a fixed distance from the open candle Blind 0–5 in a fixed room at 30 and 60 minutes
Common trap Scoring a fresh candle against an older one Scoring before the pool reaches the jar edge
What it sells The shelf, the unboxing, the gift Reviews and repeat orders
The shortcut: one candle per wax, sniffed by the person who poured it. You know which is which, you expect the dearer wax to be stronger, and your nose is already tired from the pouring room. Fix: code every candle, score in a different room from the one you poured in, use two or three people if you can, and rest between candles with a few minutes of fresh air. Score the pair together, so you are ranking, not remembering.

The throw ladder: two waxes, three loads

One load cannot tell you whether a wax is strong; it can only tell you whether it is stronger than the other wax at that load. The ladder runs three loads in each wax, so the result answers the commercial question directly: what is the lowest load at which each wax reaches my throw floor? CSI 464's maker states a 10% maximum, so the ladder stops at 10% for both waxes. Natural Soy Pearl has no fragrance ceiling published — 6–10% is used here only as a labelled test range, not a specification; ask on WhatsApp if you need the wax maker's figure.

Pour all eighteen on one day, from one oil lotSame jar (White Matte), same wick (Eco Thin C1), same stirring and cooling. CSI 464's page gives an 80–90°C melt/pour working range; Soy Pearl publishes no temperatures — record what you use and keep it identical.
2
Code every candleWrite wax, load and candle number on the base only. Whoever scores throw sees a code, never a wax name or a percentage.
3
Cold throw at 48 hours, 7 and 14 daysScore the shelf candle in each cell blind, 0–5, lid off, from a fixed distance. Rank the two waxes at each load at each checkpoint.
4
Hot throw at your selling cure ageBurn the two hot-throw candles from each cell in matched pairs — same load, both waxes — in a fixed room with the door closed. Score blind at 30 and 60 minutes from the doorway, then from the far side of the room.
5
Check the pool before you trust the scoreNote when each candle's pool reached the jar edge. A candle scored before full pool is not scored at all. If one wax never reaches full pool with this wick, its throw score is a wick result — hold the variables fixed and fix the pool first.
6
Find each wax's lowest passing loadYour throw floor is the score you will accept — decided before the test. For each wax, the lowest load that reaches it in both hot-throw candles, and is no worse on flame, soot or jar reading, is that wax's working load.
7
Watch the shelf candles for sweatingHigher loads raise the chance of oil on the surface in warm storage. A load that throws well but sweats is not a passing load. Oil droplets in warm storage covers that diagnosis.

Fix the room, then forget it
Use the same room for every hot-throw session, with fans and air-conditioning set the same way, the same door position and the same time of day. A room that changes between sessions turns your throw test into a weather report. Note the date and season on the sheet — a humid monsoon evening and a dry winter afternoon can smell different.

What the throw result does to a 25 kg order

The wax in the carton is fixed. The oil you will need to use it is not.

Here is your 25 kg turned into real CSI packs and real candles. In Soy Pearl it is 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg for ₹10,620.00 (₹424.80 a kilo); in CSI 464 it is 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg for ₹12,685.00 (₹507.40 a kilo). How many candles 25 kg of wax makes, and how much oil it calls for, depends on the load your ladder settles on. Dark Vanilla Oud costs ₹5.69 a gram in the 1 kg bottle.

10% 138.89 ₹113.82 2,777.8 g 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g ₹15,997.00

Each step of two percentage points adds ₹22.76 of oil to every candle. Across the candles 25 kg makes, the oil bill for the same wax runs from ₹9,126.00 at 6% to ₹15,997.00 at 10% — a difference of ₹6,871.00, which is more than the ₹2,065.00 difference between 25 kg of CSI 464 and 25 kg of Soy Pearl. That is why the throw test matters more than the wax price: if one wax reaches your floor at 8% and the other only at 10%, the one at 8% is cheaper per candle almost regardless of its price per kilo. The ₹450/kg at 8% versus cheaper wax at 10% post and comparing waxes at their optimal loads take this further.

Material cost per 200 g candle at 8% · wax at the 25 kg pack mix · wick ₹5.90 · jar ₹70.80 · excludes labour, packaging, freight, GST

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A 25 kg order is a good order for us, and the easy advice would be to buy it now and test as you go. We will not give it. Test from the 1 kg bags first: the ₹5,323.82 ladder decides whether you need 2,174 g or 2,778 g of oil to use the carton, and which wax gets there at the lower load. If Soy Pearl — our cheapest container soy — reaches your floor at the same load as CSI 464, buy Soy Pearl and keep the ₹2,065.00.

The priced ladder kit

Each wax needs 1,656 g across its nine candles, or 1,738.8 g with a 5% pour-loss allowance (working assumption). The oil for all eighteen candles is 288.0 g, or 302.4 g with the allowance, from one lot.

Soy Pearl's smallest bag is 1 kg, so it starts there. CSI 464 also comes in 500 g (₹260.00), but two 1 kg bags at ₹507.40 each are cheaper per kilo than four 500 g bags. Dark Vanilla Oud is bought as 3 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g: its 100 g is ₹5.90 a gram against ₹7.00 at 15 g, which is the one reliable per-gram step on the listed catalogue. Above 100 g most CSI oils are priced almost linearly, so buy the oil for the big order only after the ladder has told you how much you need.

It proves the result at batch scale for a fraction of the carton. Then buy the rest in 10 kg bags. Write the order date on every bag, keep 200–300 g of the bag you tested as a retained sample, and remember that CSI publishes no lot numbers or batch-consistency data: your retained sample is your reference. If your range has more than one oil, a ladder on one oil decides the wax only for that oil — testing one wax across your collection widens it. If throw is strong but tops or frosting fail, tops and frosting on coloured candles take those lines. If you are deciding between several waxes that each win something, the weighted decision matrix applies. And for the carton itself, when moving to larger packs makes sense opens the pack-size cluster.

Decide the load with small bags. The carton only multiplies the decision you already made.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cold throw and hot throw?
Cold throw is the scent of the unlit candle, coming from the solid surface. Hot throw is the scent in the room once the candle is burning, coming from the melt pool. Test both, at the same cure ages.
How long should soy candles cure before testing throw?
CSI's Chunks page states at least 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks. Other CSI soy wax pages publish no cure time. Use labelled checkpoints such as 48 hours, 7 and 14 days, identical for every wax.
How do I test candle hot throw properly?
Coded candles, a fixed room with the door closed, the same time of day, a full melt pool before scoring, blind 0–5 scores at 30 and 60 minutes, and two waxes burned as a matched pair.
Does higher fragrance load always give stronger throw?
No. Throw depends on the pool as well as the load, and higher loads can sweat. Find the lowest load that reaches your floor, inside the wax maker's ceiling: CSI 464 up to 10%, Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%.
Can I buy soy wax in 25 kg cartons from CSI?
CSI lists no 25 kg carton. Container soy bags go up to 10 kg and Natural Soy Pearl to 50 kg. CSI 464's page mentions a 25 kg format that is not a listed size — ask on WhatsApp whether it is available.
How much soy wax should I buy for a throw test?
For two waxes at three loads with three 200 g candles per cell, about 1.74 kg of each wax with a 5% allowance — two 1 kg bags each.

They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (oil = W × L; 200 g at 6%, 8%, 10% = 12, 16, 20 g oil). What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks, no melt point published; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, a melt/pour working range of 80–90°C in the spec table, shelf life 60 months cool and dry, described by the maker as single-pour with glass adhesion and low frosting; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl, Premium Coconut Soy, Soy Butter and Soy Pillar — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. CSI 464's page mentions a 25 kg format that is not a listed size; it is not priced here. The 25 kg quantity is the reader's figure. Three candles per cell, cure checkpoints, hot-throw timings, the 6–10% test range, the 5% allowance and the 5 kg pilot are labelled working practices. CSI publishes no throw, cure, lot or batch-consistency data. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
