Strong fragrance · Vanilla colour
Pour small samples of each vanilla, store them the way your stock will live, and photograph the drift before you order kilograms.
12 jars
three vanillas × three storage conditions, plus unscented controls
Quick answers — read this first
Will CSI vanilla oils discolour my wax? Their pages say so: Dark Vanilla will yellow light wax; Vanilla Bean and Cinnamon Vanilla publish 2.5% vanillin with a discolouration note.

How long should a colour test run? A suggested schedule is day 1, 7, 14, 30 and 60, with the last check matching how long your stock sits.

Do I need control jars? Yes, one unscented jar per storage condition, so each sample is judged against the same wax kept the same way.

Can I hide browning with dye? Dye changes the burn and does not stop the drift. Choose any colour on purpose and re-test the wick.
The short answer
Test: Three vanillas at 8% in 70 g votives, stored boxed, on display and warm, with controls.
Measure: Photographs on white card at fixed intervals, graded against each control.
Cost: ₹2,194.70 for the full storage test, oils ₹1,091.40 of that.

Straight answer
I Want a Vanilla Candle but I’m Worried About Brown Discolouration During Storage — What Should I Test Before Ordering Fragrance in Kilograms?
Run a storage colour test before any kilogram order. Pour Dark Vanilla, Vanilla Bean and Cinnamon Vanilla at a suggested 8% into 70 g clear votives of CSI 464, three of each, plus three unscented controls. Store one set boxed in the dark, one on an open shelf, one in the warmest safe indoor spot. Photograph all twelve on white card at day 1, 7, 14, 30 and 60 and grade each against its control. Order 1 kg only of the oil whose colour holds acceptably for your storage time. CSI's pages state the risk; your test measures it.
One line: before buying vanilla in kilograms, store small votive samples the way your stock will live and photograph how far the colour moves.
Cinnamon Vanilla publishes 2.5% vanillin and a moderate discolouration risk in light wax, at ₹4,554.80 per kg.

Why vanilla discolouration is a buying decision

The cheapest moment to discover your vanilla turns brown is before you own a kilogram of it.

Vanillin, the compound behind much of a vanilla scent, is well known for warming wax towards cream, tan and eventually brown as candles age. The change is usually slow. That is exactly what makes it dangerous to a new range: the candles look perfect on the day you pour, pass your burn tests, and then shift colour on a shop shelf or in a customer's cupboard weeks later.

For a vanilla candle that has to look acceptable after storage, the right move is a small, structured storage test before any 1 kg order. CSI's three vanilla pages are open about the risk, which makes them easy to plan around. A related CSI page covers checking a new bottle against an old one; this page is about choosing an oil in the first place.

What the CSI vanilla pages already tell you

Published colour information
Read this before you pour a single sample
Oil Vanillin What the page says about colour 1 kg price
Dark Vanilla Present, percentage not published Will yellow white or light-coloured wax; does not affect performance ₹7,646.00
Vanilla Bean 2.5% Potential discolouration; test with lighter waxes ₹7,646.00
Cinnamon Vanilla 2.5% Moderate discolouration risk in light wax ₹4,554.80

None of these pages says how fast or how far the colour will move, and no published figure exists for how CSI's waxes age with them. Your test supplies that missing information for your own wax, jar, storage and timeline.

Note the phrase “does not affect performance” on the Dark Vanilla page. Report it to customers only as the supplier's statement, and still burn-test every oil in your own system.

There is one more thing the pages cannot tell you: how your particular wax will respond. Vanilla Bean's page asks you to test with lighter waxes for exactly this reason. Colour is the product of oil, wax, light, heat and time together, so a result from someone else's wax and shelf is a hint at best.

Designing the storage test

The test answers one question for each oil: how much does the colour move, under conditions like yours, over the time your candles may sit unsold? Use small vessels so that the oil spend stays low. CSI's Clear Glass Votive Jar, 70 gram, is ideal: clear glass shows the full side profile and a 70 g fill uses little material.

At a suggested 8% load, each 70 g sample holds 5.6 g of oil and 64.4 g of CSI 464. Pour each oil into three votives, one for each storage condition, plus one unscented control per condition, so twelve jars in all.

Test matrix
Three oils × three conditions, with controls (suggested starting matrix)
Condition Dark Vanilla Vanilla Bean Cinnamon Vanilla Control
Boxed in a dark cupboard 1 jar 1 jar 1 jar 1 jar
Open shelf in normal room light 1 jar 1 jar 1 jar 1 jar
Warmest safe indoor spot, out of direct sun 1 jar 1 jar 1 jar 1 jar

The three conditions bracket real life: stock stored in boxes, candles on display, and a hot room in summer. Do not place samples in vehicles, near heaters or in direct sun behind glass, where they could soften, deform or become a hazard.

Make the photographs comparable

Colour drift is gradual, and the eye adapts to it. A jar you look at every day will seem unchanged long after a fresh pour beside it would show a clear difference. That is why the test relies on photographs and controls rather than memory. Use the same spot, the same time of day if you rely on daylight, the same white card behind the jars, and the same phone with any automatic filters switched off. Line the jars up in a fixed order and include a written label in every frame.

Look at the side and the top separately. Vanillin drift often shows first at the surface, where light reaches the wax, while the body of a boxed candle may stay paler for longer. Your grading scale should record both.

1
Pour on one day. One melt of CSI 464, each oil added below its published flashpoint and never with the melter at maximum, then into labelled votives with an Eco C1 wick so each sample matches a finished candle.
2
Photograph day 1. All twelve together, on white card, in the same light, with the same phone and settings. This is your baseline.
3
Repeat on a schedule. Day 7, 14, 30 and 60 are a suggested starting schedule. Match the last check to how long your stock really sits.
4
Grade the colour. Use a simple scale of your own, such as 0 for no visible change and 3 for obviously brown, always comparing each jar with its own control.
5
Keep the jars. Retain the winning oil's samples as a colour reference for future batches.

Reading the results and deciding

Expect differences between conditions as well as between oils. A vanilla that holds well in a boxed cupboard but warms on an open shelf tells you as much about your storage and display plan as about the oil.

Decision guide
What each result suggests before you order
What you see by your final check What it suggests Next step
Little visible change in any condition Oil and wax suit a light candle Order the 1 kg pack
Change only on the open shelf Light exposure is driving it Keep stock boxed; reconsider clear display jars
Warm cream drift everywhere Inherent to the oil in this wax Design for it: an ivory tone, a coloured jar or an honest description
Obvious browning Unsuitable for a white product Reject for this line; use it where colour does not matter
Do not fight vanillin with white dye. Adding colourant to mask drift changes the burn and does not stop the drift. If you colour the candle, choose the shade on purpose and test the wick again, since dye affects the burn.

Whatever the result, write it down as a specification: the oil, the wax, the load, the storage you plan to use and the longest time the candle may sit before sale. That one line protects you later, when a new bottle or a new wax arrives and you need to know what acceptable looked like.

Remember the trade between oils. Cinnamon Vanilla costs ₹4,554.80 per kg against ₹7,646.00 for the other two, but it carries a cinnamon and clove top. If it also holds colour best in your test, that is a strong argument; if not, a cheaper oil that browns is not a saving.

Consider the timeline too. If your vanilla candles usually sell within a few weeks of pouring, a slow drift that only becomes obvious at day 60 may be acceptable for a light candle sold quickly. If you pour ahead for a festive season and hold stock for months, the same drift may be a reason to choose another oil or another design.

Buy this to test, then buy this once validated

Each oil needs 3 × 5.6 g = 16.8 g for the storage jars. A 50 g pack of each leaves 33.2 g, enough for a full-size burn test of the winner in your real jar once colour has narrowed the field. Wax for twelve votives is 9 × 64.4 g + 3 × 70 g = 789.6 g.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

Why do vanilla candles turn brown over time?
Many vanilla fragrances contain vanillin, which can warm wax towards cream, tan or brown as candles age, especially with light and heat. The rate depends on the oil, the wax and how the candle is stored.
How do I test candle discolouration before buying fragrance in bulk?
Pour small samples of each candidate oil in your wax, store them in conditions like your real stock, add an unscented control for each condition, and photograph them on a fixed schedule for several weeks.
Which CSI vanilla fragrance discolours least?
CSI does not publish comparative colour data. Dark Vanilla's page says it will yellow light wax; Vanilla Bean and Cinnamon Vanilla publish 2.5% vanillin. Your storage test is the only fair comparison.
Does vanilla discolouration affect how a candle burns?
Dark Vanilla's page says it does not affect performance. Report that as the supplier's statement, and still burn-test every oil and colour in your own wax and jar before you sell it.
Does storing candles in the dark prevent yellowing?
It may slow it, which is why the test compares boxed storage with an open shelf. Many makers keep vanilla stock boxed until sale; your photographs will show how much it helps.
Can I sell a vanilla candle that has gone slightly cream coloured?
Yes, if you design for it. An ivory or warm tone, a coloured jar or honest product wording can make gentle drift acceptable. Obvious browning on a product sold as white is a different matter.
