I Want to Build a Profitable Candle Range — Should I Design the Candle First and Calculate the Price Later or Start with a Target Selling Price and Formulate Backwards?
Share
How does working backwards from price work? Target price − target contribution − non-material costs − wick, jar and lid − wax = the oil budget. At ₹799 that is ₹98.60, or ₹6.16 a gram at 16 g of oil. See the cascade.
Which oils fit a ₹799 candle? Any oil at or below ₹6.16 a gram at the pack you buy: Jasmine, Woody Oud, Sandalwood, Lavender, Bergamot Amber and Dark Vanilla Oud all fit at 100 g. Santal Noir and the inspired-by oils fit the ₹1,499 ceiling of ₹13.05. The fit table.
What happens if I design first? You find the price afterwards. A 200 g Khamrah Qahwa candle in a White Matte jar needs about ₹1,095.58 to hit the same 50% target; at ₹799 it keeps ₹257.14. That is fine if it is meant to be a ₹1,199 candle — and a problem if it was meant for ₹799.
Two ways to build a candle
Design-first is natural. You smell an oil you love, choose a jar that suits it, set a generous load, and cost the result. The price is whatever the cost plus a markup says. The trouble is that customers do not see your cost. They see a price next to other candles, and a price that falls between familiar points — ₹1,040, say — often has to be rounded down to one that sells, taking your margin with it.
Price-first, or target costing, reverses the order. You decide the price points your range will sit at, decide the share of each price you need to keep, and let the arithmetic set a budget for every component. Then you design inside that budget. The creative work is the same; it just happens within limits you set deliberately rather than limits you discover afterwards.
| Design-first | Price-first (target costing) | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | The scent, jar and look | The selling price and target margin |
| Fragrance choice | Chosen, then costed | Chosen from oils under a per-gram ceiling |
| Price | Cost × markup, whatever that gives | Fixed first, at a point your customers recognise |
| Risk | A candle at a price that does not sell, or sells at a thin margin | A candle that feels constrained if the ceiling is too low |
| Best for | One hero, limited or custom candle | The core range you sell every month |
| Check | Which price tier does the cost land in? | Does any good oil fit the ceiling? |
The cascade: ₹799 to an oil ceiling
Here is the calculation for the middle of the range. The candle is 200 g at an 8% load in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, which the wax maker rates up to 13%, poured into a White Matte Glass Jar with an Eco Thin C1 wick. The contribution target is 50% of the price: the share left after every per-candle cost, to pay fixed costs, your time and profit. That target is illustrative; set your own using the profit ladder.
| Step | Amount | Running total | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target selling price | ₹799.00 | ₹799.00 | net of any GST collected |
| − Target contribution (50%) | ₹399.50 | ₹399.50 | your choice |
| − Packaging: label, box, tissue | ₹45.00 | ₹354.50 | example |
| − Pouring and packing labour | ₹15.00 | ₹339.50 | example |
| − Share of per-order packing | ₹20.00 | ₹319.50 | example |
| − Gateway fee (2% of price) | ₹15.98 | ₹303.52 | example rate |
| = Allowable materials | ₹303.52 | ||
| − Wick, jar and lid | ₹94.70 | ₹208.82 | ₹5.90 + ₹70.80 + ₹18.00 example lid |
| − Wax (184 g of Chunks) | ₹110.22 | ₹98.60 | ₹599.00 a kilo |
| = Fragrance budget | ₹98.60 | for 16 g of oil | |
| Oil ceiling per gram | ₹6.16 | at the pack size you buy |
Every line above the ceiling is a decision you can revisit, and every one moves the ceiling. Raise the price to ₹899 and the ceiling rises; choose a rigid box and it falls. The point of the cascade is that you see the trade-off before you buy anything. Note the last note: the ceiling applies to the rate you actually pay. Lavender is ₹5.40 a gram at 100 g and fits; bought in 15 g testers at ₹7.00 it would not.
Three price points, three ceilings
| ₹399 · 85 g golden tin | ₹799 · 200 g White Matte | ₹1,499 · 300 g example jar | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target contribution (50%) | ₹199.50 | ₹399.50 | ₹749.50 |
| Non-material costs incl. fee (example) | ₹59.98 | ₹95.98 | ₹149.98 |
| Allowable materials | ₹139.52 | ₹303.52 | ₹599.52 |
| Wick, container, lid | ₹35.90 (tin ₹30.00) | ₹94.70 | ₹120.90 (example jar and lid) |
| Wax | ₹46.84 | ₹110.22 | ₹165.32 |
| Fragrance budget | ₹56.78 | ₹98.60 | ₹313.30 |
| Oil at 8% | 6.8 g | 16 g | 24 g |
| Oil ceiling | ₹8.35/g | ₹6.16/g | ₹13.05/g |
The middle tier has the tightest fragrance budget per gram. That surprises most makers, who assume the cheapest candle is the most constrained. The ₹399 tin holds only 6.8 g of oil, so a small budget still buys a good oil per gram; the ₹1,499 candle has a large budget left after its fixed costs. The ₹799 candle, with a full 200 g jar and a proper box, is where fragrance choice needs the most discipline — and it is usually the tier that sells most. The fixed-cost side of that is explained in the cost-per-gram post, and the ₹799 premium post looks at that price point on its own.
Which oils fit which price
Here are twelve oils from CSI's catalogue at their 100 g per-gram rate, checked against the three ceilings. A tick means the oil fits that tier's budget at 8% with everything else as costed above. It says nothing about performance; there is no published throw data for any oil, so test the ones that fit.
| Oil | ₹/g at 100 g | ₹399 (≤ ₹8.35) | ₹799 (≤ ₹6.16) | ₹1,499 (≤ ₹13.05) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jasmine | ₹4.30 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Woody Oud | ₹4.53 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Sandalwood | ₹5.03 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Lavender | ₹5.40 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Bergamot Amber | ₹5.60 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | ₹5.90 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Raat Ki Rani | ₹7.00 | ✓ | — | ✓ |
| Vanilla Bean | ₹7.90 | ✓ | — | ✓ |
| Santal Noir | ₹9.19 | — | — | ✓ |
| Delina (Parfums De Marly Inspired) | ₹11.95 | — | — | ✓ |
| Khamrah Qahwa | ₹15.06 | — | — | — |
| Good Girl (Carolina Herrera Inspired) | ₹17.85 | — | — | — |
The pattern is clear. Value and mid-range oils fit every tier. Richer vanillas and Indian florals such as Raat Ki Rani and Vanilla Bean fit the small tin and the premium candle but not the ₹799 jar at this load. Oils modelled on well-known perfumes fit only the ₹1,499 tier, and the dearest do not fit even that — Khamrah Qahwa at ₹15.06 and Good Girl (Carolina Herrera Inspired) at ₹17.85 a gram. They belong in a hero candle priced for them, or at a lower load, tested.
When design-first is right
Design-first is the right approach for one kind of candle: the hero. A signature scent, a limited festive edition, a custom commission. Design it as you want it, cost it honestly, and then work forwards to see which price it needs. Take a 200 g Khamrah Qahwa candle in the same White Matte jar with the same example packaging and labour. Its oil costs ₹240.96 (16 g at ₹15.06), its materials ₹445.88. To keep the same 50% contribution it needs ₹1,095.58.
| Price | Materials | Other costs incl. fee | Contribution | Share of price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹799 (forced into the core tier) | ₹445.88 | ₹95.98 | ₹257.14 | 32.2% |
| ₹1,095.58 (the price its cost needs) | ₹445.88 | ₹101.91 | ₹547.79 | 50.0% |
| ₹1,199 (the tier it belongs in) | ₹445.88 | ₹103.98 | ₹649.14 | 54.1% |
The design itself is fine. What decides whether it works is the tier. At ₹799 it keeps 32.2%; at ₹1,199 it keeps 54.1% — comfortably above target. So the design-first candle should be launched as a ₹1,199 hero, not squeezed into the core range. The tier comparison post shows how a top tier can still go wrong if it doubles the size at the same time.
When nothing fits
Sometimes the ceiling is lower than any oil you like. Before you lower your target, try the other levers, one at a time, and recost after each.
| Lever | Change | New oil ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| None (as costed) | — | ₹6.16/g |
| Load | 8% → 6% | ₹8.02/g |
| Jar | White Matte + lid → Salsa 200 ml with cap, illustrative 160 g fill | ₹14.06/g |
| Price | ₹799 → ₹899 | ₹9.16/g |
| Packaging | Box ₹45.00 → ₹30.00 (example) | ₹7.10/g |
| Target | 50% → 45% contribution | ₹8.66/g |
The jar swap is often the biggest lever at this price: a jar that brings its own lid and holds a little less wax frees money for fragrance without changing the customer's price. Lowering the target is the last lever, not the first; it is a decision to earn less on every candle, and it should be made deliberately.
The target-costing process
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 200 g candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹453.12 | ₹4.53 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹2,265.60 | ₹4.53 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹4,531.20 | ₹4.53 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 300 g candles at 24 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 g | ₹598.00 | ₹11.96 | 2.08 |
| 100 g | ₹1,195.00 | ₹11.95 | 4.17 |
| 1 kg | ₹11,952.00 | ₹11.95 | 41.67 |
This closes the second half of the cost-per-candle cluster. For the pieces the cascade relies on, see the forgotten-costs post, packaging per order and wastage; for buying once the range is set, when to move from 100 g to 1 kg.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's easiest advice is to design around the best oil you can find and price later. This page tells you to set the price first and let it cap your fragrance spend, which rules some of our dearest oils out of a ₹799 candle, because a range that earns at every price is the customer we want to keep.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; tin and Salsa jar prices are from CSI's catalogue for this series. Every ceiling, contribution and required price is plain arithmetic on those prices and the labelled examples, shown to two decimals.
The 50% contribution target, packaging, labour, per-order packing, gateway rate, White Matte lid and the 300 g jar and lid are examples; replace them with your own. A tick in the fit table means an oil fits the budget, not that it performs; no throw data is published for any oil, so test. For oils that fit your ceilings, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
