Formulation · Controlled comparison
Twenty candles are only a comparison if nineteen things are the same in every jar. Same wax lot, same load by weight, same wick from the same pack, same jar, same pour day, same cure, same room, same burn time, and nobody scoring knows which oil is which.
₹638.98
consumables per test candle, oil included — ₹12,779.53 for twenty 200 g candles plus an unfragranced control · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I make identical test candles for comparing fragrance oils? Fix every variable except the oil: one wax lot, 8% of the finished weight (16 g oil + 184 g wax), one wick size from one pack, one jar model, one pour day, one cure shelf, one test room, and blind codes. See the control table.

What does a 20-candle fragrance test cost? With 50 g of each oil and real CSI packs, ₹12,779.53 in consumables, plus ₹1,239.00 of tools if you do not have a scale, thermometer and jug. See the priced build.

Can I use 15 g samples? Not for a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g). Either buy 50 g, or make every test candle 150 g (12 g oil) so a 15 g covers it. 14 of these 20 oils have a 15 g; that route saves ₹2,782.45. See the 15 g variant.

Should I make two candles per oil? Yes if you can. The 50 g already covers two 200 g candles (32 g), so a replicate costs only wax, jars and wicks — ₹4,892.00 more for all 20 oils.
The short answer
Controls: Wax lot, load by finished weight, wick size and pack, jar model and fill, pour day and method, cooling and cure shelf, burn room and time, blind coding and random order.
Tolerance: Weigh oil to ±0.5 g or better: a 1 g error on 16 g moves the load by about half a percentage point. Record every weight.
Cost: 20 × 50 g oils ₹6,657.53 · wax, wicks, jars, centering devices and sticks ₹6,122.00 · total ₹12,779.53. Replicate pair per oil: +₹4,892.00.
Twenty test candles, one variable — everything on the left is identical in every jar Held constant One wax lot · one 5 kg bag 8% of finished weight · 16 g One wick size · one pack One jar model · 200 g fill Same pour day · same method Same shelf · same cure age Same room · same burn time Blind codes · random order C01 C02 C03 C04 C05 C06 C07 C08 C09 C10 C11 C12 C13 C14 C15 C16 C17 C18 C19 C20 Only the oil changes. Codes C01–C20 hide which oil is which until scoring is done.
Everything in the left panel is identical for all twenty candles; the codes C01 to C20 are the only visible difference, and they hide which oil is which. One unfragranced control candle (not shown) is poured from the same wax on the same day, so you can tell what the wax, wick and jar contribute on their own.
Straight answer
I want to compare 20 candle fragrance oils objectively — how do I create identical test candles so wax quantity, fragrance load, wick, jar and cure time remain controlled?
Make the oil the only thing that changes. Pour all twenty from one wax lot (one 5 kg bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks covers them). Set the load as a share of the finished weight — 16 g oil + 184 g wax for a 200 g candle at 8% — and weigh each oil to ±0.5 g, because a 1 g error moves the load by about half a point. Use one wick size from one pack, centred with a device, in one jar model filled to the same weight. Pour all twenty on one day by one method, cool them on one shelf, and test them at the same cure age in the same room for the same burn time. Code the jars C01–C20 so nobody scoring knows which oil is which, randomise the order, and add an unfragranced control. With 50 g of each oil the build costs ₹12,779.53 in consumables; a second candle per oil adds ₹4,892.00 and is worth it.
One line: if two jars differ in anything but the oil, you have compared two candles, not two fragrances.
The build on this page uses twenty oils from the middle of CSI's catalogue at their 50 g size — ₹6,657.53 in total, from Cucumber Green Tea at ₹176.41 to Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at ₹449.00. Each 50 g covers two 200 g test candles at 8%.

The control table

An objective comparison is not a better nose. It is a better build.

Most fragrance comparisons fail before the first candle is lit. One oil was poured on Monday and another on Thursday. Three jars came from a different delivery. The wick box ran out halfway and a new one was opened. The last five candles were mixed from the bottom of the wax pot after it had been held hot for an hour. Each difference is small, and each one can change throw more than the difference between two good oils. The table lists every variable a small workshop can control, the setting to use, and what to record.

Two rows cause more trouble than all the others. The load convention: CSI's maths, and this page's, sets load as a share of the finished candle. Adding 16 g of oil to 200 g of wax gives a 216 g candle at 7.41%, not 8%. If half your candles are made one way and half the other, you have built a load test by accident. I'm Making a 1 Kg Soy Wax Batch at 8% Fragrance Load — Do I Add 80 g Fragrance Oil to 1 Kg Wax or Should the 8% be Calculated from the Total Finished Candle Weight? covers the two conventions. And cure age: two oils tested a week apart in cure are not comparable, which is why the whole set is poured on one day. I'm Comparing Two Fragrance Oils — Should I Burn-Test Them at Exactly the Same Cure Age to Make the Comparison Fair? explains why.

Add an unfragranced control candle
Pour one 200 g candle of plain wax with the same wick and jar on the same day. Burn it first. It tells you what the wax, wick and jar smell like on their own, how the pool develops without fragrance, and what colour the wax is after cure. Every fragranced candle is then judged against a known baseline instead of against the one burned before it.

Load: where small errors hide

Twenty separate 16 g weighings is where a controlled test quietly stops being controlled. The candle is small, so a gram matters. The table shows what a weighing error on the oil does to the true load of a 200 g candle aiming at 8%.

Target 16 g oil + 184 g wax = 8.00% · wax held at 184 g, oil weighed wrong
What a weighing error does to the load
Oil actually weighed Candle weight True load Change from 8%
14.0 g 198.0 g 7.07% -0.93 points
15.0 g 199.0 g 7.54% -0.46 points
15.5 g 199.5 g 7.77% -0.23 points
16.0 g (target) 200.0 g 8.00% +0.00 points
16.5 g 200.5 g 8.23% +0.23 points
17.0 g 201.0 g 8.46% +0.46 points
18.0 g 202.0 g 8.91% +0.91 points

A one-gram slip changes the load by nearly half a percentage point. That is about the same size as the load differences makers test deliberately, so it can easily rank one oil above another. Three habits prevent it. Weigh the oil directly into the vessel the wax will go into, rather than into a cup you then pour from — oil clings to the cup. Zero the scale with the vessel on it every time. And write the actual weight, not the target, on the batch sheet. If a jar comes out at 17.2 g, either correct it or note it and discount that candle's score. CSI's weighing scale is ₹354.00; check its resolution on the product page, since a scale that reads only in whole grams cannot hold ±0.5 g.

Mixing one big wax pot and ladling it out. It seems efficient to melt 3.7 kg, add nothing, and ladle 184 g into twenty jugs as you go. It is fine for the wax — but the pot is held hot the whole time, so the last jug has had a longer heat history than the first. If you do it, keep the pot at a steady temperature, stir before each ladle, and randomise the order in which oils are mixed, so heat history cannot line up with any one group of oils. I'm Making 10 Kg of Scented Wax at Once — How Do I Ensure Fragrance Oil Is Distributed Uniformly Throughout the Entire Batch? covers uniformity in larger batches.

Build day, step by step

1
The day before: code, label, prepareAssign codes C01–C20 by drawing lots, and have someone else write the code-to-oil key and seal it. Label the jar bases, fix wick stickers to twenty-one centred wicks, and set out the centering devices. Print a batch sheet with a line per code.
2
Melt one wax lotMelt enough wax for all twenty-one candles — 3,880 g plus a little spare — from the single 5 kg bag. Follow the wax maker's instructions for temperatures; for CSI 464, CSI's guidance is 80–90°C, but confirm it on the product page.
3
Weigh, add oil, stir, pour — one code at a timeFor each code in the random order: zero the vessel, weigh 184 g of wax, weigh 16.0 g of oil directly in, stir for your fixed time, and pour into the coded jar. Record the actual weights and the temperature. Clean or change the stirrer between oils — bamboo stirring sticks make this simple.
4
Pour the controlPour the unfragranced candle from the same wax with the same wick. It goes on the same shelf and follows the same cure.
5
Cool and cure togetherLeave all twenty-one on one shelf, evenly spaced, away from fans and sun. Do not trim or move wicks until they have set. Store them together, lidded or covered in the same way, until the first checkpoint.
6
Test at matched cure age, blindAt each checkpoint, score cold throw for all codes in one session. For hot throw, burn one candle at a time for the same duration in the same room, with airing between. Score by code only. Customers Say My Candle Is Weak but I Can Smell It Clearly in My Workshop — How Do I Create a More Objective Hot-Throw Testing Method? sets out a scoring method, and My Candle Fills a Small Bedroom but Disappears in a Large Living Room — How Should Room Size Influence How I Judge Hot Throw? covers room size.
7
Unseal the key lastOnly after every score is written down do you open the key. Rank by score, then look at cost per candle for the leaders. One Fragrance Oil Costs More but Gives Stronger Hot Throw at a Lower Dosage — How Do I Compare Fragrance Oils by Cost per Finished Candle Rather than Price per Kilogram? turns those scores into a cost-per-candle comparison.
The CSI principle
Build the test before you judge the fragrance.
A fair comparison is decided on build day, not burn day. If the wax, load, wick, jar, pour and cure are identical, even an ordinary nose will find the real differences. If they are not, the best nose in the business is scoring noise.

The priced build

₹638.98 a candle buys you a comparison you can trust.

Each 50 g bottle leaves 34 g after the first candle, which is enough for a second 200 g candle and a cold-throw pot. That is the argument for replicates: a second candle per oil costs only wax, jar, wick and centering device. Building forty candles plus two controls — a 10 kg bag of Chunks at ₹5,999.00, nine packs of jars and nine of centering devices — costs ₹17,671.53 in total, ₹4,892.00 more than the single build. With two candles per oil, a result that appears in both is the oil; a result in only one is the candle.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more jars if we told you to buy forty new ones. You do not have to. Test jars can be cleaned and reused for the next comparison, and the five packs in this build are for the first round only. What you should not economise on is the wax lot: buying one 5 kg bag instead of five 1 kg bags costs exactly the same (₹2,995.00 either way — Chunks are priced flat per kilo), and it removes a variable. Buy for control, not for a discount that does not exist.
Nineteen things the same, one thing different — that is what makes twenty candles a test.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

The 15 g variant

A 15 g sample cannot make a 200 g candle at 8%. It can make a smaller one. If every test candle is 150 g — 12 g oil and 138 g wax, still 8% of finished weight — a 15 g sample covers it with 3 g to spare. The candles stay identical to each other, which is what matters for a comparison, though a 150 g fill in a 200 g jar burns lower in the glass than your product will. Of the twenty oils here, 14 have a 15 g in stock; the other 6 (Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired), Love Spell, Coffee Vanilla Tobacco, Forever Red (BBW Inspired), Pink Crush, Wild Berries) start at 50 g.

15 g where listed 150 g at 8% 12 g 14 × 15 g + 6 × 50 g ₹3,875.08
Difference ₹2,782.45

The 15 g route saves ₹2,782.45 on oil and a little wax (2,910 g instead of 3,880 g), but it gives up the replicate — there is no second candle in a 15 g — and it tests a candle that is not quite your product. It suits a first screen of twenty oils. For the round that chooses what you launch, use the 50 g and your production fill. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We publish no throw data for any oil, so a controlled comparison like this is the only way to rank oils for your candle. The advice not to buy extra jars, and to buy one 5 kg bag rather than smaller packs for control rather than price, is given against our own sales interest because our listed prices support it.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick, jar, centering device, scale and thermometer prices were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; the pouring jug and stirring sticks come from the equipment addendum of the same pull. The build total (₹12,779.53), replicate total (₹17,671.53) and weighing-error loads are plain arithmetic on those prices and weights.

The 8% load, 200 g and 150 g fills, ±0.5 g tolerance, stirring time, cure checkpoints and four-hour burn are working practice for a small workshop, not CSI specifications. Wick size must be your production wick; we cannot assign wick sizes to jars from our data. For help with a 20-oil order, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test candle fragrance oils fairly?
Make everything but the oil identical: one wax lot, the same load by finished weight, the same wick and jar, the same pour day, the same cure age and the same test room and burn time. Code the candles so testers do not know which oil is which, and include an unfragranced control.
How accurate does my scale need to be for test candles?
Aim for ±0.5 g on the oil. On a 200 g candle at 8%, a 1 g error moves the load to about 8.46% or 7.54%, roughly the size of the differences you are trying to detect. Check your scale's resolution, weigh oil directly into the mixing vessel and record the actual weight.
Should I pour all test candles on the same day?
Yes. Cure age changes throw, so candles poured on different days are not comparable at the same test date. Pour every candle in one session from one wax batch and test them all at the same checkpoints.
How many test candles do I need per fragrance?
Two if you can. One candle cannot tell you whether a result is the oil or the candle. A 50 g bottle covers two 200 g candles at 8%, so the second candle costs only wax, jar and wick — ₹4,892.00 extra across twenty oils here.
What is a control candle in fragrance testing?
A candle of plain, unfragranced wax poured the same way on the same day with the same wick and jar. It shows what the wax, wick and jar smell and look like on their own, and gives every fragranced candle a fixed baseline.
Can I test 20 fragrance oils with 15 g samples?
Yes, if every test candle is 150 g (12 g oil at 8%) instead of 200 g. Of the twenty oils here, 14 have a 15 g, which saves ₹2,782.45 on oil, but you lose the replicate and test a smaller fill than your product.
