Starting Budget · Ten Fragrances
Most makers frame this as a fragrance question. It is really a candle-count question. ₹30,000 of raw materials makes about 80 candles whatever you do, so the real choice is how many candles each scent gets to prove itself.
₹130.10
difference in oil cost between ten scents × 8 candles and six scents × 13 — the decision is not about oil price · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I reduce the number of fragrances or buy smaller quantities? Test all ten, launch six. Testing ten costs ₹1,472.66. Launching six gives each scent 13 candles instead of 8, for almost the same oil bill, and six sets of labels and listings instead of ten.

How many candles does ₹30,000 make? About 80 in 200 g jars, plus ten test candles. Wax, jars, wicks and stickers are ₹18,044.00 whether you choose ten scents or six. See the candle count.

Are smaller fragrance packs more expensive per gram? The 15 g almost always is. The 50 g often is not: for Royal Apricot, Spicy Raspberry, Palo Santo and Autumn it costs the same per gram as 100 g. For Mahogany Shea it is 35.3% dearer. See the small-pack penalty.

What do I do with the four scents I cut? Keep them as the next four to launch. Their test results are already paid for. Add one when a launch scent is dropped, so the range stays at six.
The short answer
Option A: 10 scents × 8 candles: testing ₹1,472.66 + oil ₹7,625.14 + wax, jars, wicks ₹18,044.00 = ₹27,141.80; reserve ₹2,858.20.
Option B: 6 scents × 13 candles: testing ₹1,472.66 + oil ₹7,755.24 + the same ₹18,044.00 = ₹27,271.90; reserve ₹2,728.10.
Decider: Candles per scent (8 vs 13) and per-scent fixed costs such as label designs, which scale with the number of scents. Five scents on ₹20,000 shows the per-scent risk maths.
Same ₹30,000, same ~80 candles — sliced ten ways or six A · 10 scents × 8 candlesscent 1scent 2scent 3scent 4scent 5scent 6scent 7scent 8scent 9scent 10oil ₹7,625.14 · reserve ₹2,858.20 B · 6 scents × 13 candlesscent 1scent 2scent 3scent 4scent 5scent 6oil ₹7,755.24 · reserve ₹2,728.10 Each bar is one candle. The oil bill barely changes; what changes is how many candles each scent gets to prove itself.
Both rows spend the same ₹30,000 at CSI's listed prices and pour roughly the same number of candles. Option A spreads them across ten scents, eight each; Option B across six, thirteen each. The oil bills differ by only a few hundred rupees. What changes is how clearly each scent's sales can be read, and how many label designs, photos and listings you have to pay for.
Straight answer
I want to launch 10 candle fragrances but only have ₹30,000 for raw materials. Should I reduce the number of fragrances or buy smaller fragrance oil quantities?
Reduce the number you launch, not the number you test. ₹30,000 of raw materials makes about 80 candles in 200 g jars, because wax, jars, wicks and stickers cost ₹18,044.00 for 90 pours (80 candles plus ten tests) whichever way you slice it. Test all ten scents first: 15 g testers where listed and 50 g where the oil starts at 50 g, ₹1,472.66 in all. Then compare. Launching all ten gives 8 candles per scent and costs ₹7,625.14 in oil. Launching the best six gives 13 candles per scent for ₹7,755.24. The oil bill hardly moves, because for many oils a 50 g costs the same per gram as a 100 g. Eight candles is too few to tell a slow scent from an unlucky one; thirteen is enough. Six scents also means six label designs and listings instead of ten, a real cost outside CSI's catalogue. Keep the other four tested scents on a bench and bring one in each time a launch scent is dropped. Buy "smaller quantities" only in the one place it is free: the 50 g of oils priced the same per gram as their 100 g.
One line: the money is the same; the evidence per scent is not. Launch six.
Testing all ten costs ₹1,472.66: 15 g of Spicy Raspberry, Palo Santo, Mahogany Shea, Ylang Ylang Flower, Saffron Cedarwood, Neroli, Autumn, and 50 g of Royal Apricot, Pomegranate Splash, Love Spell, which start at 50 g. The 35 g left in each 50 g carries into production.

The budget fixes the candle count

Every candle needs a jar and 184 g of wax, whatever it smells of. That, not the fragrance, sets how many candles ₹30,000 can make.

Start from the materials every candle shares. A 200 g candle at an 8% load needs 184 g of wax, one wick and one jar. At CSI's prices, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, an Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 add up to ₹186.92 before any fragrance. Add around ₹75 to ₹110 of oil at 100 g rates and each candle is roughly ₹260 to ₹300 in materials. Divide ₹30,000 by that, allow for testing and a small reserve, and you get about 80 candles. That number does not change when you change the number of scents.

Shared materials · 10 test pours + 80 candles · CSI prices, September 2026
The part of the budget the scent count cannot touch
Material Need Buy ₹ Share of ₹30,000
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 10 × 185 g + 80 × 184 g = 16,570 g; +5% = 17,398 g 3 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg = 18 kg ₹10,782.00 35.9%
White Matte Glass Jars 90 18 packs of 5 ₹6,372.00 21.2%
Eco Thin C1 wicks 90 100 ₹590.00 2.0%
Wick stickers 90 3 × 40 ₹300.00 1.0%
Shared total ₹18,044.00 60.1%

That is 60.1% of the budget before a gram of fragrance. It assumes you already own the buy-once tools (scale, thermometer, jug, stirring sticks and wick centering devices, ₹1,475.00 at CSI's prices), since the title's ₹30,000 is for raw materials. Notice the wax line: three 5 kg packs rather than one 10 kg and one 5 kg, because on CSI's listing the 10 kg Chunks (₹5,999.00) cost ₹9.00 more than two 5 kg packs (₹5,990.00). Wax is ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and 5 kg; there is no bulk break on this wax.

The small-pack penalty, oil by oil

"Buy smaller quantities" sounds like the cautious answer, but it only saves money if small packs are not dearer per gram. On CSI's catalogue the answer depends on the pack and the oil. Across the 55 oils that list both 15 g and 100 g, the 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium per gram. Between 50 g and 100 g the median difference is zero. Here is how that plays out for the ten scents in this launch.

Per gram · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
What buying smaller costs, scent by scent
Scent 15 g ₹/g 50 g ₹/g 100 g ₹/g 15 g premium 50 g premium

Neroli ₹7.87 ₹6.84 ₹6.66 18.2% 2.8%
Love Spell not listed ₹4.98 ₹4.49 — 10.9%
Autumn ₹6.29 ₹5.43 ₹5.43 15.9% none

Three groups appear. For Royal Apricot, Spicy Raspberry, Palo Santo and Autumn, the 50 g costs the same per gram as the 100 g, so buying smaller is free. For Saffron Cedarwood and Neroli, the 50 g is a few percent dearer. For Pomegranate Splash, Mahogany Shea, Love Spell and Ylang Ylang Flower, the 50 g carries a real premium, from 10.9% to 35.3%. Mahogany Shea is the extreme case: ₹6.61 a gram at 50 g, ₹4.89 at 100 g, and ₹10.93 at 15 g. The 15 g is dearer per gram than the 100 g for every oil here that lists one except Saffron Cedarwood, whose 15 g (₹6.92 a gram) is fractionally cheaper than its 100 g (₹6.96). For the rest, the tester premium is fine for a test and wasteful for production.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more small bottles if we said "launch all ten in 50 g and see". For four of these oils that would cost no more per gram, and it would be a reasonable choice. But ten scents at 50 g is three candles each, and three candles tell you nothing about demand. The honest trade is not small bottles versus big bottles. It is ten weak signals versus six clear ones.

Ten scents vs six, fully priced

Both options below use the same shared materials and the same testing. Oil is bought as the cheapest combination of in-stock 50 g and 100 g packs that covers each scent's candles plus 3% for pour loss, a working assumption. The 35 g left in each 50 g tester is credited first. Option B assumes the test drops Royal Apricot, Palo Santo, Neroli and Autumn; that is an assumption for the maths, not a verdict on those oils.

The two totals are within ₹130.10 of each other. Option B pours 78 candles and leaves two spare jars; Option A pours 80. On money alone, there is no strong case either way. The case for B is statistical and practical. With 8 candles a scent, one gift order of four can make a scent look like a leader. With 13, the gap between a scent that sells 11 and one that sells 4 is hard to mistake. Material cost per candle ranges from ₹245.64 (Royal Apricot) to ₹298.31 (Saffron Cedarwood) at 100 g rates, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST.

The per-scent costs nobody prices

Every scent you launch needs its own label, its own photo and its own listing. Those costs scale with the range, not with the candles.

CSI's catalogue does not include labels, printing or photography, so we cannot price them. What we can say is that they are per-scent costs: they rise with the number of scents whether you sell eight candles of each or eighty. As an example only, if a label design and first print run cost ₹500.00 per scent (replace with your printer's quote), ten scents cost ₹5,000.00 and six cost ₹3,000.00. That ₹2,000.00 difference, at example rates, is larger than the entire difference in oil cost between the two options.

The mistake that looks like choice. A ten-scent launch feels generous to the customer. In practice a new shop with ten scents at eight candles each often ends up with two sold out, five half-sold and three barely touched, and no clear signal about which to reorder. Six scents that each sell through tell you far more. Stopping fragrance inventory from fragmenting as the range grows is the same problem at a later stage.
Diwali is on 8 November 2026. A six-scent launch poured in the first half of October has two to three festive weeks to show its leaders. Tell us your six on WhatsApp and we will check stock of the 100 g sizes for a fast reorder, with GST invoicing and IFRA documentation on request.

What happens to the four you cut

Cutting four scents from the launch does not waste their tests. It gives you a bench: four scents that have already passed a burn test in your jar and are ready to launch the moment a slot opens. For the three that start at 50 g, you also hold 35 g each, enough for two more candles.

1
Rank all ten after the test burnScore each test candle on pool, flame, soot, throw across the room and whether you would buy it. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so your own scoring is the evidence.
2
Launch the top six at 13 candles eachBuy the cheapest 50 g / 100 g mix per scent. For oils with a steep 50 g premium, such as Mahogany Shea, make sure the mix is mostly 100 g.
3
Hold the next four on the benchNo further purchase. Keep their test notes and any leftover oil labelled.
4
After the first selling window, drop the slowest launch scentSell through its remaining candles and replace it with the top bench scent. The range stays at six.
5
Rotate once more before buying any 500 g or 1 kgA scent that leads two windows running has earned a bigger pack. Check whether the bigger pack is actually cheaper per gram first; for Saffron Cedarwood the 500 g is, for Spicy Raspberry nothing above 50 g is.
The CSI principle
Test wide, launch narrow.
Testing is where breadth is cheap: a 15 g tester costs about a hundred rupees. Launching is where breadth is expensive: every extra scent dilutes the candles per scent and adds its own label and listing. Ten tested, six launched, four waiting is the shape that uses a ₹30,000 budget best.

If you are set on ten, there is a middle way: launch ten, but as a smaller "discovery" candle for the four bench scents in a cheaper container, and full-size candles for the six. Testing containers before standardising one and the smallest practical test quantities cover the container side. For the purchasing pattern once leaders emerge, see I'm Starting a Candle Business and Want 10 Fragrances — Which Materials Should I Buy in Bulk and Which Should I Buy in Small Trial Quantities? and the ₹1 lakh tranche plan. What a ₹25,000 start should buy first and buying 1 kg only for your bestsellers cover the budget and bulk sides of the same decision.

Ten scents is a catalogue. Six scents that sell is a business.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Recommending ten scents would sell more testers and more bottles. This page recommends six, points out that for four of these oils a 50 g really does cost the same per gram as a 100 g, and names the oils where buying small is expensive.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. White Matte jars and Eco wicks are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026; wick stickers are from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. Pack mixes are the cheapest in-stock 50 g / 100 g combinations covering each need, computed from those prices; totals are shown to two decimals.

The 3% oil and 5% wax pour-loss allowances, the 8% load, the choice of which four scents drop out, and the ₹500.00 per-scent label example are working assumptions, not CSI data or market rates. Frequently asked questions

How many fragrances should a new candle brand launch with?
As many as the budget can give at least 12 or 13 candles each. On ₹30,000 of raw materials, about 80 candles, that is six. Test more than you launch; testing ten costs ₹1,472.66 here.
Is it cheaper to buy fragrance oil in 50 g or 100 g?
It depends on the oil. For Royal Apricot, Spicy Raspberry, Palo Santo and Autumn the 50 g costs the same per gram. For Mahogany Shea it is 35.3% dearer, for Pomegranate Splash 24.8%. Across CSI's catalogue the median 50 g vs 100 g difference is zero.
How many candles can I make with ₹30,000?
About 80 in 200 g White Matte jars at an 8% load, plus ten test candles, with wax, jars, wicks and stickers costing ₹18,044.00 and oil around ₹7,625.14 to ₹7,755.24. Tools and packaging are extra.
Do 15 g fragrance testers cost more per gram?
Almost always. Across 55 oils listing both, the 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium over the 100 g. In this set it ranges from -0.6% (Saffron Cedarwood, fractionally cheaper) to 123.8% (Mahogany Shea). Use 15 g for testing only.
What should I do with fragrance oils I tested but didn't launch?
Keep them as a bench. When a launch scent sells slowly, drop it and bring in the top bench scent. For oils that start at 50 g, the 35 g left after a test candle is enough for two more 200 g candles.
Does CSI sell a fragrance sample set for testing ten scents?
No. CSI does not list a sample set or discovery pack. Build one from 15 g bottles where listed and 50 g where the oil starts there; ask on WhatsApp for help putting ten together.
Test wide, launch narrow
Ten testers. Six launch scents. Four on the bench.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Candles are 200 g at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax); test candles 200 g at 7.5% (15 g oil). Oil need includes a 3% pour-loss allowance and wax a 5% allowance, within or at the top of the 3–5% working assumption used across this series. Which four scents drop out is an assumption for the example. The ₹500.00 per-scent label figure is an example to replace, not a CSI price or market rate. Small-pack premiums are per-gram comparisons of the same oil's listed sizes; the catalogue-wide medians (15 g +23.1% over 100 g across 55 oils; 50 g vs 100 g 0.0%) are from the 24 September 2026 pull. Per-candle material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. No throw measurements are published for any oil. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
