100 Coffee Candles · Production Buffer
One hundred 150 g candles at 8% are 13.80 kg of wax and 1.20 kg of oil. A named buffer — tests, rejects, pour loss and breakage, each on the lines it affects — takes that to 15.55 kg and 1.352 kg, then to real CSI packs.
15.55 kg
of soy wax to buy, plus 1,352 g of Roasted Coffee, 107 jars and 108 wicks · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many kg of wax? 15.55 kg after the buffer (13.80 kg net). Buy 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg of Natural Soy Pearl — ₹6,822.00.

How much coffee fragrance oil? 1,351.9 g (1,200 g net at 8%). Buy 1 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g of Roasted Coffee — ₹5,231.22.

How many wicks and jars? 108 wicks and 107 jars — the buffer is smaller on these lines because pour loss does not apply to them.

Total cost? ₹16,353.42 in CSI materials, ₹163.53 per saleable candle. Labels, boxes and courier are extra.
The short answer
Answer: Buy 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg of soy wax, 1 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g of Roasted Coffee, 110 Salsa jars, 110 wicks and 120 stickers.
Why: A 150 g candle at 8% is 138 g wax + 12 g oil. The buffer is tests + rejects on consumables, pour loss on wax and oil, breakage on glass — not one flat percentage.
Method: Net BOM → 3 test candles → ÷ 0.96 → × 1.05 on wax and oil → ÷ 0.97 on jars → cheapest in-stock packs → jars and wicks after the test pour.
The production buffer, line by line: 100 × 150 g Roasted Coffee Each bar = what you buy as a % of the net need · shading shows which allowance made each slice Wax 13.80 kg net → 16.00 kg net need = 100% 115.9% Roasted Coffee 1,200 g net → 1,365 g net need = 100% 113.8% Wicks 100 → 110 net need = 100% 110.0% Salsa jars 100 → 110 net need = 100% 110.0% tests rejects pour loss breakage pack rounding Pour loss never touches wicks or jars; breakage never touches wax or oil. A flat "+10% on everything" treats a glass jar and a gram of coffee oil as if they were lost the same way.
What you buy as a share of the net need, for each line of the order. Wax and oil carry tests, rejects and pour loss; wicks carry tests and rejects; jars carry tests and breakage. The last slice on each bar is pack rounding. Allowance figures are labelled working assumptions.
Straight answer
I want to make 100 × 150 g coffee candles — how many kilograms of wax, coffee fragrance oil, wicks and jars should I purchase after adding a production buffer?
Buy 15.55 kg of wax (1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg), 1,351.9 g of coffee oil (1 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g), 108 wicks and 107 jars. At an 8% starting load each 150 g candle is 138 g of wax and 12 g of oil, so 100 candles are 13.80 kg and 1.20 kg net. The buffer is built line by line from labelled assumptions: three test candles, 4% rejects on wax, oil, wicks and stickers, 5% pour loss on wax and oil only, and 3% breakage on glass only — not a flat 10%. Priced in Natural Soy Pearl Wax (no published ceiling, so 8% is a test starting point), Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil and the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar (200 ml brim, about 172–180 g of wax to the brim — weigh a test pour), the CSI order is ₹16,353.42. Buy wax and oil now; buy the production jars and wicks after three test candles confirm the fill line.
One line: 15.55 kg wax, 1,352 g coffee oil, 108 wicks, 107 jars — each line buffered only for what can happen to it.

The kilograms, after the buffer

A production buffer is not one percentage. It is four small ones, each covering a different way material disappears.

One hundred 150 g candles are 15 kg of finished candle. At an 8% load that is 1,200 g of coffee oil and 13,800 g of wax — 12 g and 138 g per candle. The buffer on top is built from four labelled working assumptions: three test candles to settle the fill line and the wick in the jar, a 4% reject allowance on wax, oil, wicks and stickers, 5% pour loss on wax and oil only, and 3% breakage on the glass jars only. Here is what that adds up to, line by line, in kilograms and pieces.

100 × 150 g · 8% starting load · 3 test candles · 4% rejects · 5% pour loss · 3% breakage · all labelled working assumptions

200 ml Salsa Glass Jar 100 107 7 7% 1 × 100 + 2 × 5 ₹3,351.20
CSI subtotal ₹16,353.42

Notice that the buffer is not the same size on every line, and should not be. Wax and oil carry tests, rejects and pour loss, so they grow by 12.7%. Wicks and stickers carry tests and rejects but not pour loss — a wick does not stay behind in the jug — so they grow by 8%. Jars carry tests and breakage but not rejects, because a rejected candle is melted out and its jar cleaned and reused; they grow by 7%. That gives ₹163.53 of CSI materials per saleable candle, against ₹143.69 for one candle's own BOM before any buffer.

Why "add 10% to everything" is the wrong buffer

The most common production buffer is a flat 10% on every line. It is easy, and it is wrong in two different directions at once. It is too much on the lines that do not lose material in the jug — jars and wicks — and it can still be too little on wax and oil when the run includes test candles and a reject rate above a couple of per cent. Worse, it is often applied to the wrong base: 10% on top of "100 × 150 g of wax" treats the finished weight as if it were all wax.

CSI total ₹16,353.42 ₹16,216.64 Over-buys wax by 953 g

On this order a flat 10% on the net BOM lands within ₹136.78 of the named stack in rupees (₹16,216.64 against ₹16,353.42) — but it gets there by being wrong twice. It is short on coffee oil: 1,320.0 g against the 1,351.9 g that three test candles, 4% rejects and 5% pour loss actually consume, a gap of 31.9 g, or about 2.7 candles' worth of oil. Even after pack rounding the flat order brings in 1,330 g of oil — still 21.9 g short, so the last candle or two of the run would have no coffee to go in them. And it buys more wicks than the run uses, because a wick is never lost in the jug. The 10%-on-finished-weight version is worse again: it over-orders 953 g of wax because it forgot that 8% of every candle is oil. The named stack is the only version where you can say what each extra gram is for. The 105-or-110-pieces post runs the same comparison for an order measured in pieces.

The habit: one buffer percentage for the whole order. Fix: give each line only the allowances that apply to it — tests and rejects to consumables, pour loss to wax and oil, breakage to glass — and apply them once, in that order. If you want a safety margin beyond that, make it a separate, visible line ("+2 candles' worth of wax for the next run") rather than hiding it inside a percentage. The 180 g jasmine post discusses when that extra stock is worth carrying.

Building the buffer step by step

1
Net BOM: 100 × (138 g wax + 12 g oil)13,800 g of wax and 1,200 g of Roasted Coffee; 100 wicks, 100 stickers, 100 Salsa jars.
2
Three test candles, counted as candlesThey settle the fill line in the Salsa jar and confirm the wick. 103 candle-equivalents: 14,214 g wax, 1,236 g oil, 103 jars.
3
Rejects: ÷ (1 − 4%) on consumables107.29 candles' worth of wax, oil, wicks and stickers. A 4% example rate, a point above the 3% used elsewhere in this cluster, simply to show the arithmetic at a different figure — use your own rate if you have records.
4
Pour loss: × 1.05 on wax and oilWax 15,546.6 g, oil 1,351.9 g. A labelled working figure; weighed batches in a jug commonly lose 3–5%.
5
Breakage: ÷ (1 − 3%) on glass only103 ÷ 0.97 = 106.19, rounded up to 107. A 3% example figure for jars that arrive chipped or crack on the bench.
6

Pour loss is the allowance most worth measuring
Weigh your jug and stirrer before and after a batch twice, and you have your own pour-loss figure. On this order each percentage point of pour loss is about 148 g of wax and 12.9 g of coffee oil — ₹112.47 at the rates paid. That is the number to replace first.

The 200 ml Salsa jar and a 150 g candle

A jar sold by the millilitre is filled by the gram. The gap between the two is a test pour.

The 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar is the CSI jar this order is built around, and it is a reasonable candidate for a 150 g candle — but its fill weight is not published, so treat that as a test result you have not yet got. The jar is sold by its brim volume, 200 ml. Solid soy wax is lighter than water; at a labelled approximate 0.86–0.90 g per ml, 200 ml of wax weighs about 172 g–180 g filled right to the brim. A 150 g candle would leave roughly 22 g–30 g of that brim capacity unused, which is the kind of gap below the rim most makers want. That arithmetic suggests the fit; only a weighed test pour confirms it.

Jars re-checked 4 October 2026 · fill weights not published · brim figures use an approximate 0.86–0.90 g/ml
Salsa 200 ml packs for this order
Pack Price Per jar For 107 jars
5 ₹200.60 ₹40.12 Test pack
50 ₹1,475.00 ₹29.50 2 × 50 + 2 × 5 = 110 → ₹3,351.20
100 ₹2,950.00 ₹29.50 1 × 100 + 2 × 5 = 110 → ₹3,351.20

The jar comes with a golden lug cap, which removes one non-CSI line (lids) from the order. Small packs of five cost ₹40.12 a jar against ₹29.50 in packs of 50 or 100, so the cheapest way to 107 jars is one 100-pack plus two 5-packs — and buy one of those 5-packs first, for the test pour. The 100 g wedding-favour post uses the smaller Yankee 130 ml jar with the same brim arithmetic.

The assumption: a 200 ml jar holds 200 g. It does not; wax is lighter than water and nobody fills to the brim. Fix: weigh an empty Salsa jar, pour wax to your fill line, let it set, weigh again. If it holds 150 g to your line, this BOM stands. If it holds 140 g, rewrite W as 140 and rerun the order — the wax and oil lines shrink and the jar line stays at 107.

Natural Soy Pearl at 8%: what is and is not published

This order uses Natural Soy Pearl Wax because it is the cheapest container soy wax CSI lists and the only one with a real bulk price break: ₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 a kilo at 5, 10 and 50 kg — 5.6% less. Buying the 16 kg as 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg costs ₹6,822.00; the same weight in 1 kg bags would cost ₹7,200.00. What CSI's page does not publish for Soy Pearl is a fragrance ceiling, melt point, pour temperature or shelf life. So the 8% on this page is a labelled starting point for testing, chosen from the general 6–10% range, not a specification — check the product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum before you plan around a higher load.

The priced order, in two stages

On this order the deciding material is the jar: if the Salsa jar does not hold 150 g to your fill line, the jar choice and possibly the candle weight change. Wax and coffee oil are needed whatever happens, so they can be bought first. The jar and wick production quantities wait for three test candles.

The two-stage total is the same ₹16,353.42 as the one-shot order, because the test packs are counted inside the final quantities: the five test jars are part of the 110, and the first 20 wicks are part of the 110. Nothing is bought twice. Roasted Coffee is bought as 1 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g: its per-gram price is ₹6.21 at 15 g, ₹4.60 at 50 g, ₹3.90 at 100 g, ₹3.78 at 500 g and ₹3.74 at 1 kg, so the kilo bottle carries the bulk and the small bottles close the gap more cheaply than a second 500 g would. The minimum-leftover post shows the trade-off when you would rather have less oil left over than spend the least.

The CSI principle
Every line gets only the allowances that can happen to it.
Wax and oil are lost in the jug; glass breaks; rejects consume what is inside the jar. Size each buffer to its own cause.

The method here is the same as the 100-candle Lavender hub; what changes is the candle weight, the jar and which material the test decides. If you are sizing test candles rather than a production buffer, the burn-test budget post covers that. If your coffee candle is one of several fragrances in the run, 25 each of four fragrances splits the wax across them. Your first 100 candles separates bulk from small-quantity purchases, and the complete 100-candle plan adds dye and testing materials to the same list.

A buffer you cannot explain line by line is just a guess with a percentage sign.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A flat 10% buffer would sell you more coffee oil than this run uses. This page sizes each line's buffer to its own cause, uses our cheapest container soy wax, and tells you to keep it if your tests pass.

How much wax do I need for 100 candles of 150 g?
At 8% fragrance, 13.80 kg net — 138 g per candle. With three test candles, 4% rejects and 5% pour loss, 15.55 kg, which rounds to 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg of Natural Soy Pearl.
What production buffer should I add for candle making?
Not one percentage. Add whole test candles, a reject allowance on consumables, pour loss on wax and oil only, and breakage on glass only — each from your own records where you have them, otherwise as labelled working figures.
How much fragrance oil for 100 candles of 150 g?
1,200 g net at 8% (12 g each); 1,351.9 g with the buffer on this page.
How many grams of wax fit in a 200 ml jar?
Roughly 172 g–180 g to the brim at an approximate 0.86–0.90 g per ml — less to a normal fill line. It varies by wax and temperature; weigh one test pour.
Is Natural Soy Pearl wax good for 8% fragrance load?
CSI's page publishes no fragrance ceiling for Soy Pearl. Treat 8% as a starting point for test candles, and ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum before planning a higher load.
Should I add 10% extra wicks and jars?
Usually less. Wicks need tests and rejects but not pour loss; jars need tests and breakage. On this order that is 8% more wicks and 7% more jars, not 10%.

Non-price figures and assumptions: BOM convention used on every page in this series: load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Allowances are applied in one order — whole test candles, then a reject allowance (÷ (1 − reject rate)) on wax, oil, wicks and stickers, then pour loss on wax and oil only, then breakage on glass only, then rounding up to listed in-stock CSI packs. A rejected candle is assumed to be remade with new wax, oil, wick and sticker in a cleaned jar; a jar that cannot be reused counts as breakage. Working figures on this page: 8% load (labelled test starting point; the title gives none and Soy Pearl has no published ceiling), 3 test candles, 4% rejects, 5% pour loss, 3% jar breakage. Volume is not weight: a jar's ml figure is its brim volume. Solid soy wax is lighter than water; ~0.86–0.90 g per ml is a labelled approximate working range that varies by wax, temperature and fill line, never a CSI specification. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range in the spec table, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. CSI publishes no throw, burn-test, wick-size-per-diameter or jar-diameter data; only two fills are published (Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g, Heart Cutout Velvet Jar 50 g wax capacity). Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
