Product Brief · Sculptural Candles
A sculptural run has two capacities: how many grams each mould holds, which sets your wax and oil, and how many candles your moulds can produce per day, which sets how many moulds to buy. Neither is published for any mould — both take a scale and a calendar.
30,699 g
of wax for an illustrative 100-candle, four-shape run with tests, 8% rejects and 5% pour loss · plus 2,669 g of fragrance and 14 moulds for a 10-day window
Quick answers — read this first
How do I work out wax per mould? Weigh a water fill of each cavity, × 0.86–0.90 for the candle weight, then split at your load. CSI publishes no cavity weights.

How many moulds do I need? Pours per shape ÷ working days, at a labelled one pour per mould per day. For this mix: 24 moulds for 5 days, 14 for 10, 8 for 20.

Which wax? Soy Pillar Wax (₹600.00/kg) or paraffin pellets (₹354.00/kg). Neither publishes a ceiling; test both on each shape. Paraffin saves ₹7,626.00 on this run.

What does it cost? ₹52,737.40 in CSI items (Soy Pillar, 10-day window), or ₹45,111.40 with paraffin. Buy-now test stage: ₹9,457.64.
The short answer
Answer: Weigh a water fill for each shape, convert at 0.86–0.90, split at 8%, add 2 tests per shape, 8% rejects and 5% loss: 30,699 g wax and 2,669 g oil for this mix. Moulds = pours ÷ working days.
Why: Grams per cavity decide what you buy; the set-and-unmould cycle decides how fast you can make it. A sculptural plan that counts only grams finishes weeks late.
Method: Water fill → candle weight → wax/oil split → allowance stack per shape → wax and each oil rounded to packs separately → wick as total length → mould count from your window → buy one of each and test first.

Each row is one shape: illustrative water fill, candle weight at 0.88, candles to sell, total pours after tests and rejects, wax with 5% loss, and moulds needed to finish in ten working days at one pour per mould per day. The left box decides what you buy; the right box decides how many moulds. Every water fill except the pillar's cylinder estimate is a placeholder for your own weighed figure.
Straight answer
I want to make 100 sculptural candles — how do I calculate wax, fragrance, wick and mould capacity before placing my raw-material order?
Calculate two capacities. Grams: weigh a water fill of each mould, multiply by a labelled 0.86–0.90, split at your load, then add tests, rejects and pour loss shape by shape. Moulds: divide each shape's pours by your production window. For an illustrative mix of 30 bubble, 30 tall pillar, 20 big rose and 20 peony candles at 8%, with two tests per shape, 8% rejects and 5% loss, you need 30,699 g of wax and 2,669 g of fragrance (1,335 g per scent, rounded separately), 16.5 m of wick (1 braided roll), and — at one pour per mould per day — 14 moulds for a 10-day window. In Soy Pillar Wax the CSI order is ₹52,737.40; with paraffin pellets it is ₹45,111.40. Buy one mould of each shape and the test quantities first (₹9,457.64), time your real cycle, then buy the rest.
One line: grams per cavity decide what you buy; pours per day decide how many moulds — measure both before you order.
For the illustrative mix on this page — 30 bubble, 30 tall pillar, 20 big rose and 20 peony candles — the order is 30,699 g of wax, 2,669 g of fragrance split across two scents, 1 wick roll and 14 moulds for a 10-working-day run. In Soy Pillar Wax that is ₹52,737.40 in CSI items. Start with one mould of each shape and the test quantities: ₹9,457.64.

Two capacities, not one

"Mould capacity" means two different things, and a sculptural-candle order needs both.

The first is capacity in grams: how much finished candle one cavity holds. It decides how much wax and fragrance to buy. CSI does not publish it for any mould, so you measure it with water. The second is capacity in moulds: how many candles you can produce per day with the moulds you own. It decides how many moulds to buy, and it is the line a sculptural-candle plan most often leaves out — 100 candles from one mould of each shape is a month of pouring, not a weekend.

Jar-candle BOMs in the first part of this series do not have this problem. A jar is both the container and the product, so the jar count equals the candle count and the jars can all be filled on the same afternoon. A silicone mould is a tool you reuse: each one produces one candle per set-and-unmould cycle, and the cycle — not the wax — is usually what limits the run. That is why this page has two calculations running side by side, and why the order of operations matters: grams first, moulds second, packs last.

The CSI principle
Grams decide what you buy. Pours per day decide how many moulds you buy.
Calculate the first from a weighed water fill and the second from a production window you choose. Neither is published for any mould — both are yours to measure.

Capacity in grams: one water fill per shape

For each shape, seal the wick hole, fill the cavity with water to your pour line and weigh it. Multiply by a labelled factor of 0.86–0.90 — solid wax is lighter than water by volume, and the exact figure varies with the wax and how full you pour — to get the finished candle weight. This page uses 0.88. Then split at your working load: oil = candle × 8%, wax = the rest. Neither CSI pillar-capable wax in this comparison publishes a fragrance ceiling, so 8% is a working figure inside a 6–10% test range, not a spec.

One of the four shapes lets you sanity-check the water fill with geometry. The Pillar Candle Mould, Tall is listed as 11.2 × 6.3 cm. If those are the internal height and diameter (CSI does not say), a straight cylinder of that size holds π × 3.15² × 11.2 = 349.1 g of water — an upper bound, because the pour line sits below the rim. The other three are irregular shapes and their water fills here are illustrative placeholders. Replace all four with your own weighed figures.

Capacity in grams · illustrative except where stated · factor 0.88 · 8% working load · wick = height + 5 cm hold-over
Per-candle quantities for each shape
Mould Water fill Candle (×0.88) Wax Oil Wick length
Big Bubble XL 420.0 g (illustrative) 369.6 g 340.03 g 29.57 g 15.0 cm
Pillar, Tall 349.1 g (cylinder estimate) 307.2 g 282.63 g 24.58 g 16.2 cm
Big Rose 220.0 g (illustrative) 193.6 g 178.11 g 15.49 g 11.0 cm
Peony (big) 180.0 g (illustrative) 158.4 g 145.73 g 12.67 g 10.0 cm
Weigh three, not one
Weigh each water fill three times, emptying and drying between, and use the average. A silicone mould flexes; a band that is slightly tighter on one fill changes the number. Then pour the first wax candle of each shape, unmould it and weigh it. That figure replaces the factor in every future BOM for that mould.

The allowance stack, shape by shape

Each shape gets its own row because each one has its own test candles and its own per-candle grams. The series order is fixed: tests as whole candles first, then rejects as a division, then pour loss on wax and oil, and only then rounding to packs. Two test candles per shape — one in each scent — let you check unmoulding, wick and scent on every shape before production. The reject allowance is 8%, a labelled example: sculptural shapes have narrow necks and fine detail that can tear on unmoulding, so most makers allow more than for jars. Glass breakage does not apply: there is no glass.

Allowance stack · tests → rejects (8%) → pour loss (5%, wax and oil only) · all percentages labelled assumptions
From 100 candles to grams of wax and oil
Shape Sell + tests Rejects Wax before loss Wax with loss Oil with loss
Big Bubble XL 30 + 2 tests ÷ (1 − 8%) → 34.61 11,768.1 g 12,356.5 g 1,074.5 g
Pillar, Tall 30 + 2 tests ÷ (1 − 8%) → 34.61 9,781.5 g 10,270.6 g 893.1 g
Big Rose 20 + 2 tests ÷ (1 − 8%) → 23.74 4,228.2 g 4,439.6 g 386.1 g
Peony (big) 20 + 2 tests ÷ (1 − 8%) → 23.74 3,459.5 g 3,632.4 g 315.9 g
Total 100 + 8 29,237.2 g 30,699.1 g 2,669.5 g

So the answer to the title's wax question, for this mix, is 30,699.1 g of wax and 2,669.5 g of fragrance. The net requirement — 100 perfect candles and nothing else — is only 25,156.7 g of wax and 2,187.5 g of oil; the tests, rejects and loss add 5,542.4 g of wax. That gap is not waste you can design away on a first run of irregular shapes. It is the cost of finding out what each mould really does.

The shortcut: add up the water fills and buy that much wax. Water fills for this mix total 31,073 g. Buying that as wax ignores the 0.88 factor (wax is lighter than water by volume), ignores the oil inside every candle and ignores tests and rejects — three errors that partly cancel, which is why the number looks plausible. It is 374 g more than this page's 30,699 g, and it gets the oil wrong entirely. Fix: convert, split, then stack. The 200 g jar post shows the same split error for container candles.

Capacity in moulds: how many of each to buy

One mould makes one candle per cycle. The cycle, not the wax, sets your delivery date.

A pillar or sculptural candle in a silicone mould is commonly left to set fully before unmoulding — many makers pour in the afternoon and unmould the next day. That gives a working assumption of one pour per mould per working day. It is labelled, not a spec: a small shape in a cool room may cycle faster, a large one in a warm workshop slower, and CSI publishes no set times. Use your own cycle once you have timed the test candles. With that assumption, moulds needed per shape = pours for that shape ÷ working days in your window, rounded up.

Moulds per shape = ceil(pours ÷ working days) · 1 pour per mould per day is a labelled working assumption · moulds CSI live pricing, pulled 24–25 September 2026
How many moulds for your production window
Window Bubble Pillar tall Big rose Peony Moulds Mould cost
5 working days 7 7 5 5 24 ₹27,072.74
10 working days 4 4 3 3 14 ₹15,630.28
20 working days 2 2 2 2 8 ₹8,375.64
One of each (35 days) 1 1 1 1 4 ₹4,187.82

The table makes the trade-off visible. One of each shape costs ₹4,187.82 but takes 35 working days, because the bubble and pillar shapes each need 35 pours. A 10-day window needs 14 moulds for ₹15,630.28; a 5-day window needs 24 for ₹27,072.74. Moulds are the one line in a sculptural BOM that buys speed rather than candles, so decide the delivery date first and let it set the mould count. The bubble mould is the expensive line at ₹2,124.00 each; if the window is tight, it is the shape where a longer window saves the most money.

1
Pour the test candles at your normal time of dayPour all eight test candles — two per shape — in the same session you would use for production, in the room you will use. Note the room temperature on the batch sheet.
2
Check each shape at fixed intervalsLook at each mould at set checkpoints — for example 4, 8 and 16 hours after the pour. A labelled checkpoint list is enough; CSI publishes no set times for any wax or mould.
3
Unmould the first of each shape at the earliest checkpoint that looks setIf it releases cleanly with no tear at the narrow points, that checkpoint is your candidate cycle. If it tears or dents, wait for the next checkpoint with the second candle.
4
Count the cycles per day you can really runA cycle is pour + set + unmould + clean + re-seal. If a shape's cycle fits twice into your working day, it is two pours per mould per day; if it needs an overnight set, it is one.
5
Recalculate the mould table with your numberMoulds per shape = pours ÷ (pours per mould per day × working days). Write the result on the BOM before buying the extra moulds.
Buy one of each first
Whatever the window, buy one mould of each shape for the test candles, time the set-and-unmould cycle in your own workshop, and only then buy the rest. If your cycle turns out to be two pours a day, every mould count in the table halves. The BOM-template post puts this "capacity line" into the template for any moulded product.

Which wax: Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin pellets, priced both ways

Two CSI waxes can be candidates for free-standing shapes: Soy Pillar Wax (₹600.00 a kilo at every size, 500 g to 10 kg) and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets (₹177.00 for 500 g, ₹354.00 for 1 kg). Neither page publishes a melt point, pour temperature or fragrance ceiling, and CSI publishes no hardness, release or burn data for either. We will not tell you which unmoulds better or throws better; the two test candles per shape will. What we can show is the arithmetic, because it is large.

Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets 31 × 1 kg 31,000 g ₹10,974.00 ₹354.00 300.9 g

Paraffin pellets are ₹7,626.00 cheaper for this run. Two practical notes come with that number. CSI lists paraffin pellets only up to 1 kg, so this order is 31 bags — ask on WhatsApp whether a larger pack can be quoted, since none is listed and no discount figure is published. And the per-candle difference is smaller than the run total suggests, because the oil and wick do not change:

Per candle · wax at the 1 kg rate · oil at the average rate actually paid for both scents · wick at the roll rate · excludes mould, labour, packaging, GST
Material cost per candle by shape and wax
Shape Soy Pillar Wax Paraffin pellets Difference
Big Bubble XL ₹378.08 ₹294.43 ₹83.65

Big Rose ₹198.40 ₹154.59 ₹43.82
Peony (big) ₹162.45 ₹126.60 ₹35.85
Argued against our own interest, plainly. Soy Pillar Wax is the dearer of the two by ₹246.00 a kilo, and on this run that is ₹7,626.00. If your customers do not ask for soy and your paraffin test candles unmould cleanly and burn well, paraffin is the cheaper buy and we will sell it to you happily. If they do ask for soy, or the paraffin candles fail on your sheet, the extra is the price of the product you can actually sell. Pour one candle of each shape in both waxes before you decide; that costs a few hundred rupees and the decision is worth ₹7,626.00 every run.

Fragrance: two scents, and one price quirk worth knowing

Half the candles of every shape go into each scent, so each oil needs 1,334.7 g. The scents in this example are Palo Santo and Saffron Cedarwood. Palo Santo is priced almost flat: ₹6.02 a gram at 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg alike. Saffron Cedarwood is the opposite — and backwards. Its 500 g bottle is ₹2,584.20 (₹5.17 a gram) while its 1 kg is ₹6,867.60 (₹6.87 a gram). Two 500 g bottles cost ₹1,699.20 less than one kilo. Always compute; never assume the bigger bottle is the cheaper rate.

Oil per scent = 1,334.7 g incl. tests, rejects and 5% loss · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026

Both oils 2,669.5 g ₹15,735.30

Notice that the two oils are rounded separately, never added together and then split: you cannot pour Palo Santo leftovers into a Saffron Cedarwood candle. That is the general rule for every multi-scent BOM in this cluster — five scents on shared wax and jars applies it to a jar collection, and the 15-SKU post shows what happens when it is applied per SKU instead of per scent.

Wick: length, not count

Moulded candles are wicked with lengths cut from a roll, threaded through the pinhole and held at the open base. The quantity is therefore a total length: for each shape, (pours + 1 spare) × (mould height + 5 cm hold-over). The Tall pillar uses its listed 11.2 cm; the other heights are illustrative. For this mix that is 16.48 m of wick against 61 m on one Braided Wick Roll (₹706.82) — 1 roll. Wick size for a given shape is not published; the two test candles per shape are where you find out whether the braid is right for each diameter, and a second candidate such as Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made (₹120.00 for 10) is worth having on the bench for the widest shape.

Oil is the line where waiting costs a little: the test quantities come in small bottles, dearer per gram than the production packs. Buying oil before a client approves weighs that trade-off for a confirmed order.

If you are planning a festive run, send us your shapes, water fills, scents and delivery date on WhatsApp: we will check the wax, oil and wick quantities, and quote larger paraffin or Soy Pillar quantities than the listed bags. No volume discount figure is published.

If your moulded product is a single bubble candle rather than a run of shapes, the bubble-candle list covers the extras in more detail. If the same scents will also go into melts, combined fragrance purchasing and materials shared across candles and melts take over. For jar ranges, three sizes in one procurement plan and standardising ten SKUs; and for any new product at all, the complete BOM before buying. When the run is confirmed and recurring, one consolidated monthly order shows how moulds sit beside consumables.

Using other CSI moulds? The method is identical. Ribbed Pillar Mould 5 × 15 cm (₹1,414.82; the 5 × 7 cm is out of stock), Daisy Pillar Mould (₹942.82), Beach Theme Pillar Mould (₹826.00), Sunflower Mould (₹295.00) and Orange Mould (₹354.00) all have unpublished cavity weights — weigh water, convert, split, stack and count moulds from your window. The David Candle Mould (₹3,540.00) is listed in very limited stock; confirm on WhatsApp before planning around it.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's shopping list is easy to pad. Every line on this page is computed from a per-unit quantity and an allowance you can see, rounded to the cheapest in-stock pack combination we list, with the leftover shown — including where a smaller or cheaper option means a smaller order from us.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Soy-wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Wick and jar prices were re-checked 4 October 2026. Mould, paraffin, sealer and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24–25 September 2026; scale, thermometer and centering-device prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Grams, pack rounding, leftovers and ₹ totals are computed to two decimals so you can check them.

The water fills (except the pillar's cylinder estimate), the 0.88 wax factor, the shape mix, two tests per shape, the 8% reject rate, 5% pour loss, 5 cm wick hold-over, illustrative mould heights and one pour per mould per working day are illustrative. They are labelled working assumptions, not standards, and every non-CSI line is an example you replace with your own quote. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much wax a silicone mould needs?
Seal the wick hole, fill to your pour line with water and weigh it. Multiply by about 0.86–0.90 for the candle weight (wax is lighter than water by volume), split off your fragrance, then confirm with a weighed wax pour.
How many candle moulds do I need for 100 candles?
Divide the pours for each shape (including tests and rejects) by the working days you have, assuming a labelled one pour per mould per day until you time your own cycle. Round up per shape.
Is paraffin or soy better for sculptural candles?
CSI publishes no hardness, release or burn data for either, so test one candle of each shape in both. On price, paraffin pellets are ₹354.00 a kilo and Soy Pillar Wax ₹600.00 a kilo.
How much fragrance oil for moulded candles?
Neither CSI pillar-capable wax publishes a ceiling, so test 6–10% of the candle weight; this page uses 8%. Round each scent separately to its own bottles.
How much wick do I need for moulded candles?
Total length = (pours + spares) × (mould height + a hold-over, 5 cm here). A 61 m braided roll covers a lot of candles; the wick size per shape still has to be burn-tested.
Is a 1 kg fragrance oil always cheaper per gram than 500 g?
No. On CSI's list, Saffron Cedarwood's 500 g is ₹5.17 a gram and its 1 kg ₹6.87. Most oils are nearly flat above 100 g. Compute every time.
Grams, then moulds, then packs
Weigh the water, count the pours, and buy one mould of each before the rest.
Soy Pillar Wax from ₹300.00 for 500 g, paraffin pellets ₹177.00 for 500 g, Big Bubble mould ₹2,124.00, Pillar mould ₹942.82, Big Rose ₹590.00, Peony ₹531.00, Braided Wick Roll ₹706.82. Send us your shapes and delivery date and we will check the quantities.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The bill-of-materials method — per-unit quantities, allowance stack, rounding to real packs, buy-now versus buy-after-testing — applies to any supplier's materials.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: load is a share of the finished candle weight (oil = W × L). CSI publishes no cavity weight, internal dimension, set time or life for any mould, no wick size per shape, and no melt point, pour temperature or fragrance ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin pellets. The cylinder figure uses the listed 11.2 × 6.3 cm as if internal. The other water fills and heights, the 0.86–0.90 (0.88) wax factor, the shape mix, two tests per shape, 8% rejects, 5% pour loss, 5 cm hold-over and one pour per mould per working day are labelled illustrations. Non-CSI lines are examples. Costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
