I Want to Make a Candle Discovery Set With Five 50 g Candles — Should Each Fragrance Have Its Own Wick Test Even Though All Jars Are Identical?
Share
Do I need five full wick tests? No. Find a base wick with one representative oil such as Lavender, then confirm it in the other four, switching only where a candle fails.
Which oil in a set is most likely to need a different wick? Vanillin-rich gourmands such as Dark Vanilla often behave differently, and any oil you load higher, such as Citrus Lemon at the upper end, needs rechecking at that load.
How much does a wick test for a five-scent set cost? About ₹2,722.45 in the worked example: five 50 g oils, 1 kg CSI 464, Eco C1 and C2 wicks, and 25 Black mini jars.
The short answer: one starting wick, five confirmations
Five matching 50 g jars make the testing easier, because the diameter, fill and wax are fixed. What they do not fix is the oil. Fragrance oils differ in how they behave in a melt pool: some thicken it, some carry vanillin that changes how the wax burns, some are light and volatile. Any of those can turn a wick that is perfect for one scent into a wick that drowns or flares with another.
So the practical answer is neither "one wick for all" nor "start from scratch five times". It is a two-stage plan. Find a base wick with one representative oil, then run a short confirmation burn for each of the other four, and only switch wick for the oils that fail. That is far cheaper than five full wick searches and far safer than none.
A five-oil discovery set and why each oil is a separate risk
Take a discovery set that spans families, which is the point of a discovery set. Here is one built from CSI oils, with the reason each one deserves its own confirmation.
| Oil | Family | What the page states | Wick risk to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | Herbal floral | Stated load 6–10%; rated "Strong" on its page | Usually the easiest; a good base-wick oil |
| Dark Vanilla | Gourmand | Vanillin present; will yellow light wax; soy 6–10% | Vanillin-rich oils can change burn; check for soot and drowning |
| Woody Oud | Woody | Soy 6–10%; cure 48–72 h | Heavier profile; check pool speed after full cure |
| Citrus Lemon | Citrus | Vanillin ~0%; page advises full cure and upper end of range | If you load it higher, recheck the wick at that load |
| Blue Ocean | Aquatic | 0% vanillin; flashpoint 143°C; up to 10% | Generally clean; confirm flame height at load |
Lavender makes a sensible base-wick oil because it is a single-note profile with a broad stated range and no gourmand base. Dark Vanilla is the one most likely to need something different, since vanillin oils are well known to behave differently in a burn, and its page states that it will yellow white or light wax. Citrus Lemon is the other one to watch, not because of its chemistry in the pool but because its page advises the upper end of the range, and a higher load can change what the wick has to carry.
The two-stage test plan
In total that is twenty test candles: five oils × two wicks × two jars. Twenty is a suggested starting point; three jars per cell is better if you see variation.
Costing the test, then the set
Each test candle at 8% of 50 g carries 4 g of oil and 46 g of wax. Per oil, four test jars need 16 g, which is more than a 15 g sample, so buy the 50 g packs.
| Item | Pack | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Lavender, Dark Vanilla, Woody Oud, Citrus Lemon, Blue Ocean | 50 g each | ₹270.00 + ₹410.00 + ₹271.40 + ₹170.00 + ₹247.00 = ₹1,368.40 |
| CSI 464 wax (20 × 46 g = 920 g) | 1 kg | ₹507.40 |
| Eco C1 wicks | 20 | ₹118.00 |
| Eco C2 wicks | 10 | ₹94.40 |
| Black Mini Glass Jars (20 needed) | 25 | ₹634.25 |
| Total | ₹2,722.45 |
For production, suppose you plan 100 sets (your figure), which is 500 candles: 100 of each oil. Each oil needs 100 × 4 g = 400 g, so one 500 g pack per oil covers it with a little spare. The five 500 g packs cost ₹2,620.00 + ₹3,840.00 + ₹2,265.60 + ₹1,420.00 + ₹2,478.00 = ₹12,623.60. Wax is 500 × 46 g = 23 kg, which is 2 × 10 kg + 3 × 1 kg of CSI 464: (2 × ₹5,074.00) + (3 × ₹507.40) = ₹11,670.20. Jars are 5 × 100 Mini Glass Jars = 5 × ₹2,124.00 = ₹10,620.00.
Wicks follow your approvals. As an illustration only, if Lavender, Woody Oud and Blue Ocean approve C1 and Dark Vanilla and Citrus Lemon need C2, you would buy 300 C1 (3 × ₹590.00 = ₹1,770.00) and 200 C2 (2 × ₹944.00 = ₹1,888.00), or ₹3,658.00 in all. Your own results decide the split.
What one set costs in materials
Per candle, wax is 46 g × ₹0.5074 (₹5,074.00 ÷ 10,000 g) = ₹23.34 and the jar ₹2,124.00 ÷ 100 = ₹21.24. Oil per candle, priced from the 500 g packs: Lavender 4 g × ₹5.24 = ₹20.96; Dark Vanilla 4 g × ₹7.68 = ₹30.72; Woody Oud 4 g × ₹4.5312 = ₹18.12; Citrus Lemon 4 g × ₹2.84 = ₹11.36; Blue Ocean 4 g × ₹4.956 = ₹19.82. Using the illustrative wick split, one set costs (5 × ₹23.34) + ₹100.98 oil + (5 × ₹21.24) + ₹36.58 wicks = ₹360.46, excluding the set box, inserts, labels, labour, shipping and GST.
A scoring sheet that makes the decision easy
Lay the sheet out with one row per test candle and the same columns for every oil: oil, load, wick, pour date, cure days at test, minutes to a full pool, flame notes, soot, and a pass or fail. Add a short notes column for anything odd, such as a mushrooming wick head or wax left on the glass. When the twenty rows are filled in, the approved wick for each oil is usually obvious, and the sheet doubles as your production record for the set.
Where discovery sets usually go wrong
A discovery set is often the customer's first contact with your brand, and they will light the scents they like most. Each candle has to burn as well as it would as a full-size product. That is why the extra twenty test jars are worth their ₹2,722.45.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
