I Want to Make a Sandalwood Candle for Meditation — What Should I Purchase for the First Formulation and Burn-Test Stage?
Share
Why is the oil a problem? Sandalwood's 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock; only 500 g (₹2,513.40) and 1 kg can be bought. The kit needs 103.5 g.
What are my options? A: buy 500 g (kit ₹4,728.80; the rest is production oil). B: test Santal Noir from 100 g + 15 g (kit ₹3,300.40). C: Sacred Sandal Ember 500 g (kit ₹6,214.40).
What load for meditation? Test 6% (5.1 g oil) and 8% (6.8 g) and write a throw ceiling as well as a floor. Use the lowest load that is present at 1 m and not dominant at 3 m.
A meditation candle is a different brief
That changes what the first purchase has to answer. A living-room candle is judged on whether it fills the room; a meditation candle is usually judged on whether the scent is present without dominating, whether the flame is steady and quiet, and whether there is any soot or flicker to distract. Those are all things a formulation and burn test can measure. None of them is in a data sheet: CSI publishes no throw, dosage or flame data for any oil, wax or wick.
The container is the easy part. CSI's Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g fill is one of only two CSI containers with a published fill: 85 g. At ₹360.00 for 12 (₹30.00 a tin) it suits a small, personal meditation candle, and it removes the fill-check step every glass-jar post in this cluster needs. At an 8% working load an 85 g tin is 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax; at 6% it is 5.1 g of oil and 79.9 g of wax (CSI convention: load is a share of the finished weight).

The stock problem, and the three routes around it
Sandalwood is the obvious oil for this brief, and on the 24 September price pull Sandalwood Fragrance Oil was listed from 15 g at ₹93.22. On the 4 October re-check its 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock: only the 500 g (₹2,513.40, ₹5.03 a gram) and 1 kg (₹5,026.80) can be bought. A first formulation kit for 16 tins needs only 103.5 g of oil including a 5% allowance. That mismatch is the whole question of this page, and there are three honest ways through it.
| Route | Oil and pack | Oil ₹ now | Oil left after the kit | Production oil rate | If the oil fails |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · Buy Sandalwood 500 g | Sandalwood · 1 × 500 g | ₹2,513.40 | 396.5 g (≈ 58 tins at 8%) | ₹5.03/g at 500 g and 1 kg | ₹1,992.98 of oil unused |
| B · Test a sandalwood-type oil with small packs | Santal Noir · 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹1,085.00 | 11.5 g | ₹9.12/g at 1 kg | ₹1,085.00 spent, little left over |
| C · Test Sacred Sandal Ember | Sacred Sandal Ember · 1 × 500 g (100 g and 1 kg out of stock) | ₹3,999.00 | 396.5 g | ₹8.00/g, 500 g only | ₹3,170.97 of oil unused |
Route A is the right call if you are confident the product is sandalwood and you plan to make it. The 500 g is not a cost of testing; most of it is the first production run's oil bought early, at the same ₹5.03 a gram the 1 kg pack charges. If Sandalwood passes, nothing is wasted. If it fails, you hold 396.5 g of an oil you will not use.
Route B changes the oil, not just the pack. Santal Noir is a different fragrance — its name places it in the sandalwood family, but CSI publishes no composition or throw data for it or for Sandalwood, and you should not assume they smell alike. It is in stock from 15 g to 1 kg, so it is the cheapest way to find out. The catch is production cost: at ₹9.12 a gram at 1 kg it is the dearer oil to make with. If you choose this route, Santal Noir becomes the product, or you run a second, Route-A test later.
Route C — Sacred Sandal Ember — has the same pack problem as Sandalwood (only 500 g in stock on the re-check, ₹3,999.00) and costs more per gram. It is worth choosing only if its character is what you want; it is not a way round the stock-out. Other routes exist: wait for the small Sandalwood sizes to come back (ask on WhatsApp — CSI publishes no restock dates), or test another woody oil from the catalogue. The choice of oil is yours; the table just prices it.
The first formulation and burn-test kit
The kit is identical on every route except the oil line. It runs two stages in the 85 g tin: a wick screen at 8% in both waxes, then a 6% step with the wick that passed, because a meditation brief may well be met at the lower load. One shelf tin per wax is kept back and later burned to the end. CSI 464's page states up to 10% and CSI 468's up to 13%, so 6% and 8% sit comfortably inside both.
| Stage | Wax | Load | Wick | Tins | Oil per tin | Wax per tin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · wick screen | CSI 464 · CSI 468 | 8% | Thin C1 · Cotton Braided | 2 per pair = 8 | 6.8 g | 78.2 g |
| B · lower load | CSI 464 · CSI 468 | 6% | Stage-A winner | 3 per wax = 6 | 5.1 g | 79.9 g |
| Shelf / full life | CSI 464 · CSI 468 | 8% | Stage-A winner | 1 per wax = 2 | 6.8 g | 78.2 g |
| Total | 16 | 98.6 g in all | 630.7 g per wax |

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 662.2 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹507.40 | 337.8 g (₹171.38) |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 662.2 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹650.00 | 337.8 g (₹219.55) |
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | 103.5 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹2,513.40 | 396.5 g (₹1,992.98) |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 6 wicks | 1 × 20-pack | ₹118.00 | 14 wicks |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 6 wicks | 1 × 10-pack | ₹120.00 | 4 wicks |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g fill | 16 jars | 2 × pack of 12 | ₹720.00 | 8 jars |
| Wick stickers (sheet of 40) | 20 stickers | 1 × sheet of 40 | ₹100.00 | 20 stickers |
| CSI kit subtotal | ₹4,728.80 |
On Route B, swap the oil line for Santal Noir 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g (₹1,085.00) and the kit is ₹3,300.40; on Route C, Sacred Sandal Ember 500 g (₹3,999.00) makes it ₹6,214.40. Everything else — 1 × 1 kg of CSI 464 (₹507.40, a 1 kg bag is cheaper than two 500 g at ₹520.00), 1 × 1 kg of CSI 468 (₹650.00, the same as two 500 g), an Eco Thin C1 20-pack (the 10-pack is out of stock), a Cotton Braided 10-pack, 2 × pack of 12 tins and one sticker sheet — is ₹2,215.40.
Burn-testing for calm, not for power
| Line | Type | Pass rule (yours) | 464 | 468 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flame height / flicker in still air | Knock-out | No worse than the other candidates | ___ | ___ |
| Soot on white card | Knock-out | None visible | ___ | ___ |
| Tin base reading | Knock-out | No hotter than the others; within your surface's tolerance | ___ | ___ |
| Full pool by end of cycle | Weighted | Reaches the tin's edge | ___ | ___ |
| Presence at 1 m, 30 min, 0–5 | Weighted | ≥ 3 | ___ | ___ |
| Dominance at 3 m, 0–5 | Ceiling | ≤ 2 | ___ | ___ |
The "dominance" line is what makes this sheet different from every other in the cluster: a load that scores 5 at 3 m fails a meditation brief. Safety remains a knock-out, never a trade: "no worse than the other candidates, within your container supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to" (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard).
From kit to production tins
The production example is a labelled first run of 120 tins at 8% in CSI 464 with Eco Thin C1. The allowance stack follows the series order: 2 QC tins, ÷ (1 − 3%) for rejects, + 4% pour loss on wax and oil only, and no breakage line, because tins are not glass. Then everything is rounded to real CSI packs.
| Stage | Tins | Wax | Oil | Tins (containers) | Wicks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Net requirement | 120 tins | 9,384.0 g | 816.0 g | 120 | 120 |

| CSI subtotal | ₹15,487.80 |
Now subtract the kit's leftover. Route A's 500 g had 396.5 g left after the kit, so the production oil still to buy is 493.0 g — 1 × 500 g at ₹2,513.40, not the 1 × 1 kg in the table. That is the real saving of Route A: it is only a saving if the oil passes. At 6% instead of 8% the oil need falls to 667.1 g, but Sandalwood comes only in 500 g and 1 kg, so the pack bought barely changes — the difference shows up as 332.9 g of leftover for the next run rather than as rupees saved now.

The brief → kit → production method is in the lavender hub. If you already know the formula and only need quantities, the 50 × 250 g sandalwood calculator runs the numbers for a bigger candle. When the smallest pack is bigger than the need, the supplier-MOQ post and the 1.3 kg fragrance post work through the rounding, and the wax-melts post shows a second product that can use leftover oil.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The 500 g Sandalwood is the more profitable route for us. This page tells you when it is also the right route for you (the oil is your product and its leftover becomes production stock), when it is not, and that a meditation candle may be best at the lower load.
