I Want to Make an Oud Candle That Smells Strong in a Large Living Room — Which Raw Materials Should I Test Before Buying Production Quantities?
Share
What does the first purchase cost? ₹5,409.26 for 14 candles: Woody Oud, White Royal Oud, Midnight Bakhoor Royale, CSI 468, Soy Pearl, Eco Thick C2, Cotton Braided, White Matte jars.
And the large-room ladder? Purchase 2, 10 candles in the winning oud: ₹3,007.46–₹4,405.00 depending on which oud won.
Will a 200 g candle fill my living room? No one can promise that: CSI publishes no throw or room-coverage data. Test it at 1 m, 3 m and 5 m in the room it is for, and accept that the answer may be a bigger format.
A large living room changes what "strong" means
Most candle testing happens on a kitchen counter or in a small bedroom. That is fine for checking the flame and the melt pool, but it says very little about whether a 200 g oud candle will be noticed across a large living room. As an example, a 6 m × 5 m room with a 3 m ceiling is 90 m³ of air; a 3 m × 3 m bedroom of the same height is 27 m³ — 3.33 times smaller. Those are illustrative rooms; use your customer's. The point is that a throw result is only meaningful with the room written next to it.
What a buyer calls a strong candle in a big room depends, in general candle-making practice, on four things you can buy and one you cannot. You can buy the oil, the load (inside the wax's published ceiling), the wax and the wick that sets the melt pool. You cannot buy the room — its volume, its air movement, the open door to the balcony. CSI publishes no throw data for any oil or wax and no figure for how much room any candle fills, so nobody can promise a 200 g candle will fill your customer's room. What you can do is test in a room that size before you buy production quantities.
What to test before production quantities, in order
There are four gates between an oud idea and a production order. Each gate removes options, so each later gate needs fewer candles. The first purchase covers gates 1 and 2; gate 3 is a second, small purchase sized to whatever passed; gate 4 is the production list.
| Gate | What it decides | Where | Candles | Bought when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Oil screen | Which of three ouds deserves a full test | Any room | 3 oils × 2 = 6 | Purchase 1 |
| 2 · Wax × wick | A clean, full melt pool with no worse flame, soot or jar reading | Any room | 2 waxes × 2 wicks × 2 = 8 | Purchase 1 |
| 3 · Large-room ladder | The lowest load that clears your throw floor at 5 m | The large room | 3 loads × 3 + 1 shelf = 10 | Purchase 2, after gate 2 |
| 4 · Full-life burn | No late tunnelling, flame growth or hot lower jar | Any room | 1 from gate 3 | No new purchase |
| Production | Wax, oil and wick in packs | — | 80 (example run) | After gate 4 |
The oils in gate 1 are three of CSI's oud-family oils with different price points: Woody Oud (₹4.53 a gram at 100 g), White Royal Oud (₹8.10) and Midnight Bakhoor Royale (₹7.99, smallest pack 100 g). Others exist — Dark Vanilla Oud and Sultan's Smoke, for example — and Regal Royal Oud is out of stock in every size on the 4 October re-check. Three is enough for a screen; the black oud post builds its kit around Dark Vanilla Oud.
Purchase 1: the screen and the pool
Every gate-1 and gate-2 candle runs at 10%: 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax in a 200 g candle (CSI convention: load is a share of the finished weight). Gate 1 uses CSI 468, whose page states fragrance up to 13%, so the later ladder has room to reach 12%. Gate 2 compares it with Soy Pearl, CSI's cheapest container soy, whose page publishes no ceiling — so for Soy Pearl 10% is the top of a labelled 8–10% test range, not a specification.
| Gate | Oil | Wax | Load | Wick | Candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Woody Oud · White Royal Oud · Midnight Bakhoor Royale | CSI 468 | 10% | Eco Thick C2 | 2 each = 6 |
| 2 | Woody Oud | CSI 468 · Soy Pearl | 10% | Eco Thick C2 · Cotton Braided | 2 per pair = 8 |
| Total | 14 |
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Leftover |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 1,890.0 g | 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,300.00 | 110.0 g (₹71.50) |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 756.0 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹450.00 | 244.0 g (₹109.80) |
| Woody Oud Fragrance Oil | 210.0 g | 2 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹999.46 | 5.0 g (₹23.24) |
| White Royal Oud Fragrance Oil | 42.0 g | 3 × 15 g | ₹390.00 | 3.0 g (₹26.00) |
| Midnight Bakhoor Royale Fragrance Oil | 42.0 g | 1 × 100 g | ₹799.00 | 58.0 g (₹463.42) |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 | 12 wicks | 1 × 20-pack | ₹188.80 | 8 wicks |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 6 wicks | 1 × 10-pack | ₹120.00 | 4 wicks |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 14 jars | 1 × pack of 10 + 1 × pack of 5 | ₹1,062.00 | 1 jars |
| Wick stickers (sheet of 40) | 18 stickers | 1 × sheet of 40 | ₹100.00 | 22 stickers |
| CSI kit subtotal | ₹5,409.26 |
Woody Oud carries both gates, so it is the biggest oil line: 210.0 g, bought as 2 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g for ₹999.46. White Royal Oud's 42.0 g is cheapest as 3 × 15 g (₹390.00, against ₹420.00 for one 50 g). Midnight Bakhoor Royale has no pack below 100 g, so its screen costs ₹799.00 and leaves 58.0 g — enough, if it passes, for most of a gate-3 ladder. Eco Thick C2 is used in both gates, 10 wicks plus spares, so it comes as a 20-pack; Cotton Braided as a 10-pack.
Running gates 1 and 2
Purchase 2: the large-room ladder, sized to what passed
Gate 3 pours the winning oud in the winning wax and wick at 8%, 10% and 12% — three candles per load — plus one 12% shelf candle: 10 candles, 204 g of oil and 1,796 g of wax before a 5% allowance. That is the CSI 468 case; its page states 13%, so 12% sits inside it. If Soy Pearl won gate 2, its page publishes no ceiling — run 8% and 10% only and ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum before going higher. Wicks come from purchase 1: Eco Thick C2 has 10 left, Cotton Braided 6; a Cotton winner needs one more 10-pack (₹120.00).
| Winning oud | Oil buy | Oil ₹ | CSI 468 wax | White Matte jars | Purchase 2 total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud | 2 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹999.46 | 2 × 1 kg · ₹1,300.00 | 1 × pack of 10 · ₹708.00 | ₹3,007.46 |
| White Royal Oud | 2 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹1,750.00 | 2 × 1 kg · ₹1,300.00 | 1 × pack of 10 · ₹708.00 | ₹3,758.00 |
| Midnight Bakhoor Royale | 3 × 100 g | ₹2,397.00 | 2 × 1 kg · ₹1,300.00 | 1 × pack of 10 · ₹708.00 | ₹4,405.00 |
If Midnight Bakhoor Royale wins, its 100 g leftover from gate 1 (58.0 g) covers part of the 214.2 g — subtract it and the purchase-2 oil drops to 2 × 100 g. For the others, the 15 g and 50 g leftovers are too small to matter; buy the line as shown. The wax may already be covered by gate 1's CSI 468 leftover (110.0 g) only in part, so the table prices a fresh bag.
| Station | 30 min | 60 min | 120 min | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · 1 m from the candle | ___ / 5 | ___ / 5 | ___ / 5 | Should be clear for any passing load |
| B · 3 m | ___ / 5 | ___ / 5 | ___ / 5 | Typical sofa distance in a large room |
| C · 5 m, near the door | ___ / 5 | ___ / 5 | ___ / 5 | Your example floor: "clear at C by 60 min" |
| Safety: flame, soot, jar reading | — | ___ | ___ | Knock-out: no worse than the other loads |
| Pool: full width by end of burn | — | — | yes / no | From gate 2's pair |
Write the throw floor before the first burn, and write it as a station and a time, not a feeling. The answer is the lowest load that clears the floor on all three candles, not the load with the highest score — a higher load costs more in every candle you will ever make. Then burn one candle at that load to the end of usable wax (gate 4) before you order production quantities. If no load clears the floor at C, the honest conclusion may be that one 200 g candle is the wrong product for that room, not that it needs more oil; the three-wick 500 g post prices the bigger-format test.
What one 200 g oud candle costs at each load
Per-candle material cost below uses CSI 468 at its 5 kg rate (₹0.64/g), each oud at its 1 kg rate, Eco Thick C2 at ₹9.44, the White Matte jar at ₹70.80 and one sticker at ₹2.50. It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. Each point of load in a 200 g candle is 2 g of oil.
| Oud | 1 kg rate | 8% | 10% | 12% | Cost of +2 points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud | ₹4.53/g | ₹272.45 | ₹288.02 | ₹303.60 | ₹18.12 |
| White Royal Oud | ₹8.10/g | ₹329.60 | ₹359.46 | ₹389.32 | ₹32.41 |
| Midnight Bakhoor Royale | ₹8.00/g | ₹327.93 | ₹357.38 | ₹386.83 | ₹32.00 |
The spread across ouds at 10% (₹288.02 to ₹357.38) is bigger than the spread across loads within one oud. That is why gate 1 is a real decision and not a formality. And it frames the large-room problem honestly: if the room needs two candles burning, the material cost of throw at 10% is ₹576.05 in Woody Oud or ₹714.76 in Midnight Bakhoor Royale — before packaging.
The production list, after gate 4
Only now does the order get large. The table writes the production list for a labelled example run of 80 candles in CSI 468 with Eco Thick C2 and the White Matte jar, for each oud at each load the ladder could return. The allowance stack follows the series order: 2 QC candles, ÷ (1 − 3%) for rejects, + 4% pour loss on wax and oil only, + 2% breakage on glass only, then rounding to real CSI packs. All are labelled assumptions; the wax, wick, jar and sticker lines are identical in every column — only the oil and a little wax move.

The brief → kit → production method is set out in the lavender hub; the vanilla post explains which variables belong in a first purchase. If oud is one of several fragrances, the five-fragrance collection keeps wax and jars shared, and for oud in a dark, dyed candle the black oud post adds the dye ladder.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The convenient advice for a fragrance seller is "buy the dearest oud at 12%". This page tells you to screen three ouds in their smallest packs, to find the lowest load that clears your floor, and that a large room may need a different product rather than more oil.
