I Want to Reduce My Candle Cost by ₹20 Without Reducing Fragrance Performance — Which Cost Components Should I Analyse First?
Share
Can I reach ₹20.00 without touching the fragrance or the jar? Not quite. Consolidating the inbound parcel is ₹4.40, bringing an assumed 3% wastage to nil is ₹5.38 and the wax pack step is ₹2.52 — ₹12.30 in all, which leaves you ₹7.70 short. The oil pack rate or the vessel has to carry the rest.
What is a bigger wick pack worth? ₹0.00. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 each in the 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000-wick packs alike, and Thick (C2) is ₹9.44 each in every pack. The same is true of the White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 a piece in both its packs. CSI publishes no quantity ladder on either.
What is the biggest saving on the sheet? The vessel, at ₹41.30 — from the White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 to the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar at ₹29.50 in its 50-piece pack. Both listings publish 200 ml and neither publishes a wax fill weight, so pour one of each and weigh it before you count the saving.
What "without reducing fragrance performance" actually rules out
Most cost-reduction advice starts by cutting the fragrance, because the fragrance is usually the dearest gram in the candle. You have ruled that out, and that is a sound commercial decision: scent is the product. So the first job is to say precisely what the constraint forbids, because an unstated constraint is one you will break by accident at the third decimal place.
Three things are fixed. The oil itself — a different fragrance is a different product, however similar the description. The grams of it — this page holds the load at 8% of wax weight, so 200 g of wax carries 16.00 g of oil and 216.00 g goes in the jar. And the wax the oil sits in, at least until a burn test says otherwise, because hot throw is a property of the wax and the fragrance together, not of the fragrance alone. That third one is the constraint people forget, and it is the reason the wax grade appears on this page as a lever you may not take yet rather than one you may not consider.
State the fill reading too, because the rest of the arithmetic hangs on it: this page uses 200 g of wax plus 16.00 g of oil, not a 200 g finished candle. On the live CSI materials named above that comes to ₹250.68 — ₹101.48 of wax, ₹72.50 of fragrance, ₹70.80 of vessel and ₹5.90 of wick — and the target is therefore ₹230.68.
| Line | Quantity | Rate | Cost | Can it move? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 200 g | ₹507.40/kg | ₹101.48 | Rate yes, grade only after a burn test |
| Fragrance — Woody Oud | 16.00 g at 8% of wax weight | ₹4.53/g | ₹72.50 | Rate yes, grams and oil no |
| Vessel — White Matte Glass Jar | 1 | ₹70.80 each | ₹70.80 | Yes — nothing here touches scent |
| Wick — Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 1 | ₹5.90 each | ₹5.90 | Yes, but see what it is worth |
| Materials per candle | 216.00 g of fill | — | ₹250.68 | — |
| Your target | — | −₹20.00 | ₹230.68 | — |
The ledger: every lever, in rupees, ranked
Here is every line on this candle that can move, priced from the live ladders rather than estimated. Read the third column first: it says what each saving costs you in something other than money, which is the only ranking that matters when a constraint is in force. The order to analyse them in is the order of that column, not the order of the rupees.
| Lever | Worth per candle | What it changes | Allowed under your constraint? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vessel — White Matte Glass Jar to 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar at the 50-piece rate | ₹41.30 | The look of the candle, and the fill you must re-measure | Yes |
| Oil pack rate — Woody Oud 50 gm to 100 gm | ₹14.35 | Nothing. Same oil, same grams, same load | Yes |
| Wax grade — CSI 464 to Eco Soy CSI 400 | ₹21.68 | Pour behaviour, cure and throw | Not until a burn test says so |
| Wastage — an assumed 3% loss brought to nil | ₹5.38 | Nothing bought; only what reaches the jar | Yes |
| Inbound parcel — wax and oil in one consignment | ₹4.40 | Nothing in the candle; only how it arrives | Yes |
| Wax pack — CSI 464 500 g to 1 kg | ₹2.52 | Nothing. Identical wax | Yes |
| Vessel pack — White Matte Glass Jar Pack of 5 to Pack of 10 | ₹0.00 | Nothing, because the rate does not move | Yes, and pointless |
| Wick pack — Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 20 to 1,000 | ₹0.00 | Nothing, because the rate does not move | Yes, and pointless |
Paying less for exactly the same fragrance
This is the lever to analyse first, and it is the one most makers skip because it sits on the line they have decided not to touch. The constraint protects the oil and the grams of it. It does not protect the rate you pay for those grams. On Woody Oud the rate moves a great deal at the bottom of the ladder and not at all at the top, so the size of this lever depends entirely on which pack you buy today.
| Pack | Pack price | Rate | The fragrance line on one candle | Step from the pack above |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud 15 gm | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21/g | ₹99.43 | — |
| Woody Oud 50 gm | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43/g | ₹86.85 | ₹12.59 lower |
| Woody Oud 100 gm | ₹453.12 | ₹4.53/g | ₹72.50 | ₹14.35 lower |
| Woody Oud 500 gm | ₹2,265.60 | ₹4.53/g | ₹72.50 | ₹0.00 — no change |
| Woody Oud 1 kg | ₹4,531.20 | ₹4.53/g | ₹72.50 | ₹0.00 — no change |
So the honest shape of it: if you buy Woody Oud in 50 gm bottles, moving to the 100 gm pack is worth ₹14.35 a candle, which is most of your ₹20.00 on its own and costs you nothing a customer could detect. From 15 gm the same move is ₹26.94. Above 100 gm there is nothing left: the 100 gm, 500 gm and 1 kg packs are all ₹4.53 a gram, so buying the kilogram commits ₹4,078.08 more cash to one scent and returns ₹0.00 a candle.
One caution, because this is the sentence that costs people money. Ladder shapes are not a property of the store, they are a property of the listing. Some CSI oils are flat from the 50 gm pack upward, some carry their whole step between the smallest two packs, and on a few the largest pack is not the cheapest per gram. Open the page for the oil you actually use, divide each pack price by its grams, and write the five numbers down. That is a two-minute job that will tell you whether this lever is worth ₹14.35 or ₹0.00 for you.
The vessel and the parcel
The vessel is the largest single saving available to you: ₹41.30, more than twice the target, from moving the White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 to the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar at ₹29.50 in its 50-piece pack. Both listings publish 200 ml. Neither publishes a wax fill weight, and this page will not invent one, so the practical step before you take this saving is to pour one of each and weigh what actually goes in. If the second jar takes less wax, part of that ₹41.30 is a smaller candle rather than a cheaper one, and your customer will notice the difference before your spreadsheet does.
What you cannot do is get the saving from the pack size of the jar you already use. The White Matte Glass Jar is ₹70.80 a piece in its Pack of 5 and ₹70.80 a piece in its Pack of 10 — a step of ₹0.00. That is the normal pattern on CSI vessels, not the exception, so a plan that assumes a carton rate on the jar you like is a plan that needs checking before it is budgeted.
Then the parcel, which almost never appears on a cost-per-candle sheet and is worth more than the wax pack step. A Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 5 kg pack carries a stored packed weight of 6.0 kg and a Woody Oud 500 gm pack carries 0.8 kg. Ordered separately the two parcels come to ₹740.00; ordered together, at 6.8 kg, one parcel is ₹630.00 on Standard Shipping. That 5 kg of wax makes 25 candles at 200 g, so carried into the stack the two orders are ₹29.60 a candle and the one order is ₹25.20 — a difference of ₹4.40. Published flat bands, September 2026.
| How you order | Weights | Charge | Per candle across 25 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax and oil separately | 6.0 kg and 0.8 kg | ₹630.00 plus ₹110.00 = ₹740.00 | ₹29.60 |
| Wax and oil in one consignment | 6.8 kg | ₹630.00 | ₹25.20 |
| Difference | — | ₹110.00 | ₹4.40 |
The line you can cut without buying anything
Wastage is the only lever here that costs nothing to pull and needs no supplier at all. It is also the one this page cannot put a real figure on for you: wax left in the jug, an abandoned pour, a jar wiped out and started again are all real and all specific to your bench. The percentages below are a stated assumption, not measured data. Measure your own once — weigh the wax and oil you start a batch with, weigh the candles you finish with — and the figure you get is worth more than any number in this table.
The mechanism is simple and slightly unforgiving. If a proportion of the scented wax never reaches a sellable jar, the cost per good candle is the scented-wax cost divided by one minus that proportion. On this candle the scented wax is ₹173.98 — ₹101.48 of wax plus ₹72.50 of fragrance — and the vessel and wick are unaffected, because a jar you did not fill is a jar you can still use.
| Assumed loss of scented wax | Scented wax per good candle | Added per candle | Materials per good candle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | ₹173.98 | ₹0.00 | ₹250.68 |
| 2% | ₹177.53 | ₹3.55 | ₹254.23 |
| 3% | ₹179.36 | ₹5.38 | ₹256.06 |
| 5% | ₹183.14 | ₹9.16 | ₹259.84 |
Read the third column as a lever. Going from an assumed 3% loss to nil returns ₹5.38 a candle, and from an assumed 5% loss to nil returns ₹9.16. Nothing on this page is cheaper to try. Warm the pouring jug, scrape it, pour the last of a batch into a tealight rather than the bin, and decant the oil bottle properly. Bench discipline is the one cost reduction that improves the product instead of trading against it.
Does it reach ₹20.00?
Add up only the levers that leave both the fragrance and the vessel exactly as they are: the parcel at ₹4.40, an assumed 3% of wastage at ₹5.38, and the wax pack step at ₹2.52. That is ₹12.30, which is ₹7.70 short of your target. The two levers most people try first — a bigger wick pack and a bigger pack of the jar they already use — contribute ₹0.00 between them.
So something has to give, and you have three honest choices. If you currently buy Woody Oud in 50 gm bottles, move to the 100 gm pack: that is ₹14.35 on its own and the combination reaches ₹26.65, comfortably past ₹20.00, with the candle unchanged in every respect a customer can perceive. If you already buy at 100 gm or above, the vessel is the lever: ₹41.30 takes the candle to ₹209.38 in one move, at the cost of changing how the candle looks and re-measuring what it holds. And the wax grade at ₹21.68 sits there as the third option, outside the constraint until a burn test brings it inside.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells the wax, the oil, the jars and the wicks on this page, and the page still tells you that two of the levers a supplier would normally be happy to sell you — a bigger wick pack and a bigger pack of the same jar — are worth ₹0.00 each, that the 500 gm and 1 kg packs of Woody Oud cost the same per gram as the 100 gm pack so there is no rate reason to buy up, and that the cheapest ₹20.00 available to most makers is wastage, which needs no supplier at all. It also says plainly that the wax grade saving of ₹21.68 should not be taken on a spreadsheet — a repoured batch costs more than the saving.
Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, as CSI product pages state it: this page carries 200 g of wax plus 16.00 g of oil at 8%, 216.00 g poured, and says so wherever it matters. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page states a maximum of 10% of total wax weight and the Woody Oud page states soy use at 6–10%; where a wax ceiling and an oil range differ the lower governs. CSI does not publish a fragrance-load maximum for Eco Soy CSI 400 — ask on WhatsApp. The wastage percentages are stated assumptions and not measurements. Delivery figures are the store's published flat weight bands read against stored packed weights. No vessel on this page is said to hold a particular weight of wax, because CSI publishes millilitres rather than fill weights for these listings. Labels, boxes, outbound courier, gateway fees, electricity, rent and your own hours are not CSI products and carry no figure here.
