Cost per Candle · ₹799 Premium
At ₹799 the wax, wick and jar are settled costs. What is left is one pot of money that fragrance and packaging have to share. Spend more on the box and the oil budget shrinks by the same amount. This page shows the exchange rate.
₹8.12/g
highest oil price a 200 g ₹799 candle can carry at 8% with ₹80 of packaging, keeping ₹300 after example costs · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much can I spend on fragrance in a ₹799 candle? With example costs of ₹90.00 per candle and ₹80.00 of packaging, and keeping ₹300.00: up to ₹129.97 of oil — ₹8.12 a gram at 8% in a 200 g candle. That admits 57 of the 73 oils in stock at 1 kg.

How much can I spend on packaging? It is the same pot. Every ₹16.64 more on packaging costs ₹1.00 a gram off the oil cap. At ₹40.00 of packaging the cap is ₹10.53/g; at ₹160.00 it is ₹3.32/g. The trade-off table has every combination.

Can a ₹799 candle use an inspired-by perfume oil? Rarely at 8%. Khamrah Qahwa at ₹15.06 a gram puts ₹240.96 of oil in the candle. Even with only ₹40.00 of packaging the cap is ₹10.53 a gram if you keep ₹300.00, or ₹13.53 if you keep ₹250.00 — both below it. The dearest oils (₹17.85–₹24.06 a gram) need a lower target, a lower load or a higher price.

What margin does a ₹799 candle make? With White Royal Oud and gift-ready example packaging, materials plus packaging are ₹402.11: a 49.7% gross margin on price and a 98.7% markup on cost, before fees, labour and courier.
The short answer
Shared budget: ₹799 − example costs ₹90.00 − amount kept − wax, wick, sticker, jar (₹193.83 incl. 4% wax wastage) = oil + packaging budget.
Oil cap: Keep ₹300.00: packaging ₹40.00 → ₹10.53/g · ₹80.00 → ₹8.12/g · ₹120.00 → ₹5.72/g · ₹160.00 → ₹3.32/g (200 g, 8%).
Premium oils: White Royal Oud ₹8.10/g · Smoked Rose Royale ₹7.99/g · Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹8.99/g at 100 g · Khamrah Qahwa ₹15.06/g. The ₹1,499 post covers the dearest tier.
₹799 candle: every rupee on packaging lowers the oil you can afford ₹0/g ₹5/g ₹10/g ₹15/g ₹20/g ₹0 ₹50 ₹100 ₹150 ₹200 Packaging spend per candle (your quotes) keep ₹250.00 keep ₹300.00 keep ₹350.00 Lavender ₹5.40 White Royal Oud ₹8.10 Khamrah Qahwa ₹15.06 Line = highest oil price per gram that still leaves your target per candle (200 g, 8%, Chunks, White Matte jar, example costs ₹90.00)
Each line starts at the oil cap with no packaging and falls as packaging spend rises; where a line ends, there is no oil budget left. The grey horizontals are three real oils at their 100 g price. With ₹80 of packaging and ₹300 kept, White Royal Oud fits and Khamrah Qahwa does not. Packaging and other costs are examples.
Straight answer
I want to sell a premium candle at ₹799 — how much can I afford to spend on fragrance oil and packaging?
Treat them as one budget. In a 200 g candle with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco wick, a sticker and a White Matte Glass Jar, the fixed lines cost ₹193.83 including a 4% wax wastage allowance. Take off example per-candle costs — fee, shipping supplies, labour and breakage, ₹90.00 — and the amount you want to keep. If you keep ₹300.00, oil and packaging share ₹215.17. Spend ₹80.00 on packaging and the oil can cost up to ₹8.12 a gram at 8% — enough for White Royal Oud (₹8.10) or Smoked Rose Royale (₹7.99), but not Khamrah Qahwa (₹15.06). Cut packaging to ₹40.00 and the cap rises to ₹10.53; raise it to ₹160.00 and it falls to ₹3.32. So decide which one the customer is paying for — the scent or the unboxing — and fund that first. The true-cost hub builds the fixed lines, and the ₹1,499 post shows the allocation at the luxury tier.
One line: every rupee on the box is a rupee not spent on the scent — choose which one the customer is paying for.
Two premium oils that fit a ₹799 candle with room for gift-ready packaging: White Royal Oud at ₹810.00 for 100 g (₹129.60 per candle at 8%) and Smoked Rose Royale at ₹799.00 for 100 g (₹127.84). Both are priced flat from 100 g to 1 kg, so the 100 g is the sensible first production size.

One pot for oil and packaging

At ₹799, the jar, wax and wick are decisions you have already made. Fragrance and packaging are the two you are still arguing about — and they are paid from the same money.

A premium price buys room, but not unlimited room. Some of the ₹799 goes on costs that do not change whichever oil or box you choose: payment fees, shipping supplies, your labour, a breakage and returns allowance. Some goes on the fixed candle lines. Some has to stay with you to pay for everything fixed in the business and leave a profit. What remains is the budget for the two things that most shape how premium the candle feels — the scent and the presentation.

Oil + packaging budget ₹215.17 shared

That ₹215.17 is the whole pot. Oil takes 16 g × its price per gram, plus 4% wastage. Packaging takes whatever you spend on lid, labels, wrap and box. The exchange rate between them is fixed by the recipe: ₹16.64 of packaging equals ₹1.00 a gram of oil (16 g × 1.04). So a ₹50 upgrade in the box costs you about ₹3.00 a gram on the oil you can afford. That rate is the most useful number on this page.

Work out your own exchange rate
Exchange rate = oil grams per candle × (1 + wastage). A 300 g candle at 8% with 4% wastage has 24 g × 1.04 = ₹24.96 of packaging per ₹1.00 a gram of oil. The bigger the candle, the more a gram of oil costs in packaging terms — which is one reason luxury candles are often larger. I Want to Sell a Luxury Candle at ₹1,499 — How Should I Allocate Product Cost Between Fragrance, Wax, Jar, Lid and Outer Packaging? works through that tier.

The trade-off table

Here is the full grid: rows are packaging spend per candle, columns are the amount you want to keep. Each cell is the highest oil price per gram, at 8% in a 200 g candle, that still delivers that target. The last column counts how many of the 73 oils in stock at 1 kg sit under the ₹300 cap at the kilo rate.

200 g · 8% · 16 g oil + 4% wastage · Chunks · White Matte jar · example costs ₹90.00
Maximum oil price per gram at ₹799
Packaging per candle (your quote) Keep ₹250.00 Keep ₹300.00 Keep ₹350.00 1 kg oils under the ₹300 cap
₹40.00 ₹13.53 ₹10.53 ₹7.52 65
₹80.00 ₹11.13 ₹8.12 ₹5.12 57
₹120.00 ₹8.72 ₹5.72 ₹2.71 36
₹160.00 ₹6.32 ₹3.32 ₹0.31 4

Reading the grid: with ₹80.00 of packaging and ₹300.00 kept, any oil up to ₹8.12 a gram fits — 57 of the 73 in-stock kilo oils. Keep ₹350.00 at the same packaging and the cap falls to ₹5.12. At ₹160.00 of packaging and ₹300.00 kept, the cap is ₹3.32, which only the cheapest oils in the catalogue meet. That combination — a lavish box around a value scent — is worth pausing on: the customer pays ₹799 and the thing they burn is the cheapest part of it.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell the oil, not the box, so the easy advice would be ‘spend on fragrance’. That is not always right. If your customers buy your ₹799 candle as a gift, the unboxing may matter more to them than the difference between a ₹5 and an ₹8 oil. If they buy it to burn at home, the reverse is true. Decide which customer you are pricing for, and put the money where they will notice it.

Packaging tiers, costed

Packaging is where the examples on this page matter most, because CSI does not list lids for the White Matte jar, labels, boxes, ribbons or cards. The three tiers below use example figures only — replace every one with your own quote at your real order quantity. The tissue paper is CSI's listed ₹6.50 a sheet.

All figures are EXAMPLES except CSI tissue (₹650.00 / 100 sheets)
Three packaging tiers for a ₹799 candle
Tier What is in it Per candle Oil cap if you keep ₹300.00
Essential Lid (example) ₹15.00 · Front + safety labels (example) ₹12.00 · Tissue sheet (CSI) ₹6.50 · Kraft sleeve (example) ₹12.00 ₹45.50 ₹10.20/g
Gift-ready Lid (example) ₹15.00 · Labels (example) ₹12.00 · Tissue sheet (CSI) ₹6.50 · Printed tuck box (example) ₹35.00 · Thank-you card (example) ₹5.00 ₹73.50 ₹8.51/g
Presentation Lid (example) ₹25.00 · Premium labels (example) ₹20.00 · 2 tissue sheets (CSI) ₹13.00 · Rigid box (example) ₹75.00 · Ribbon and card (example) ₹15.00 ₹148.00 ₹4.04/g

The step from Essential to Presentation costs ₹102.50 a candle, which takes ₹6.16 a gram off the oil cap. Print runs matter here: small quantities of printed boxes and labels are often priced much higher per piece than large ones, so quote at the volume you will actually order. The packaging-per-order post covers the parts of packaging that are per parcel rather than per candle.

Premium oils at ₹799

A higher oil price is not a promise of stronger throw. It is a different formula, and a different line on your cost sheet.

CSI has not published hot-throw or cold-throw measurements for any oil, so the choice between premium oils is a test, not a table. What the numbers can do is tell you which oils your ₹799 candle can carry at your chosen packaging tier. Here are six specs, each fully costed: materials include the 4% wastage allowance; the total adds the example packaging tier.

200 g · 8% · Chunks · White Matte jar · 100 g oil prices · packaging = example tier
Six ₹799 specs with both percentages
Oil (100 g) Oil per candle Materials Packaging tier Materials + packaging Gross margin on price Markup on cost
Lavender ₹86.40 ₹283.68 Essential ₹45.50 ₹329.18 58.8% 142.7%
Dark Vanilla Oud ₹94.40 ₹292.00 Essential ₹45.50 ₹337.50 57.8% 136.7%
White Royal Oud ₹129.60 ₹328.61 Gift-ready ₹73.50 ₹402.11 49.7% 98.7%
Smoked Rose Royale ₹127.84 ₹326.78 Gift-ready ₹73.50 ₹400.28 49.9% 99.6%
Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹143.84 ₹343.42 Presentation ₹148.00 ₹491.42 38.5% 62.6%
Khamrah Qahwa ₹240.96 ₹444.43 Presentation ₹148.00 ₹592.43 25.9% 34.9%

The gross margin and markup here are on materials and packaging only — fees, labour, shipping supplies and breakage still come off. Gross margin is (price − cost) ÷ price; markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost. The first four specs keep roughly half the price on these lines; the last two show how quickly presentation packaging and a dear oil together eat into it.

The perfume-inspired oil that looks affordable. Khamrah Qahwa is ₹1,506.00 for 100 g, which scents 6.25 candles — it is easy to divide that into ₹799 and feel safe. Costed properly with presentation packaging, materials and packaging come to ₹592.43, a 25.9% gross margin on this line, and once the example ₹90.00 of other costs comes off it keeps ₹116.57. That is not a ₹799 candle. It is a ₹1,199 or ₹1,499 candle priced too low. The ₹1,499 post shows where it fits.

What a 10% load does

Premium candles are often poured at a higher load in the hope of a bigger scent. At 10% a 200 g candle holds 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax, so the oil cap per gram falls: with ₹80.00 of packaging and ₹300.00 kept it becomes ₹6.62 a gram instead of ₹8.12. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% by the wax maker, so 10% is within the ceiling; CSI 464 tops out at 10%. But a higher load is not automatically a stronger candle — wick, melt pool and cure matter as much. The 8% to 10% post prices the change across whole production runs, and the load-reduction post looks at the reverse.

The CSI principle
Fund what the customer is paying for, first.
At ₹799 you cannot have the dearest oil, the finest box and a strong margin at once. Decide whether this candle sells on scent or on presentation, give that line the money, and cost the other to what is left.

6

Here is the raw-material list for a first run of 30 candles, 15 each of White Royal Oud and Smoked Rose Royale, with 4% extra wax and oil. That needs 5,741 g of wax and 250 g of each oil, so three 100 g bottles of each scent.

That is ₹382.40 a candle in CSI materials before your packaging. The 300 g of each oil scents 18 candles, leaving room for a test candle or two; the wax leaves about 250 g over. Because both oils are flat per gram from 100 g to 1 kg, there is no price reason to buy the kilo until a scent is proven — per-gram price breaks are rare across the catalogue.

Where this fits: the fixed lines come from the ten-line cost sheet, and the same budget logic runs one tier down in the ₹399 ceiling post and one tier up in the ₹1,499 allocation post. If the oil you want sits just above the cap, the dosage comparison shows whether a dearer oil at a lower load could still fit, and the breakage post covers what a broken ₹799 candle in transit really costs. Comparing ₹499, ₹799 and ₹1,199 candles looks at how jar size moves all of this.

A ₹799 candle can have a remarkable scent or a remarkable box. It can have both only if you raise the price or accept keeping less.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell fragrance oil, so it would suit us to tell you every spare rupee belongs in the scent. For some ₹799 candles it belongs in the box. This page gives you the exchange rate between the two and leaves the choice to you.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick and jar figures are those verified 10 September 2026; wick stickers and tissue paper are from the 24–25 September pull. Caps, margins and markups are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals. CSI has not published throw measurements for any oil; price is not a proxy for performance.

Payment fee, shipping supplies, labour, breakage allowance, the amount kept per candle and every packaging item except tissue are examples to replace with your own quotes; they are not CSI prices or market rates. For help costing a premium candle, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil cost is too much for a candle?
It is too much when it takes the candle below the amount you need to keep. At ₹799 with example costs and ₹80 of packaging, keeping ₹300 caps oil at ₹8.12 a gram in a 200 g candle at 8%.
How much should candle packaging cost?
There is no fixed figure; it shares a budget with fragrance. At ₹799 our example tiers run ₹45.50, ₹73.50 and ₹148.00 a candle. Every ₹16.64 of packaging costs ₹1.00 a gram off the oil you can afford.
What is a good margin for a premium candle?
Look at what is left after every per-candle cost, not just materials. With White Royal Oud and gift-ready example packaging, gross margin on materials and packaging is 49.7% (markup 98.7%); after example fees, labour and supplies it keeps ₹306.89.
Are expensive fragrance oils better for candles?
Not necessarily. A higher price reflects the formula, not measured throw, and CSI has not published throw data for any oil. Test premium oils side by side in your own wax and jar before you pay for them in every candle.
Which fragrance oils suit a premium candle?
Any oil your cap allows and your burn test approves. Premium-tier examples in stock include White Royal Oud (₹8.10/g), Smoked Rose Royale (₹7.99/g), Coffee Vanilla Tobacco (₹8.99/g at 100 g) and, in the Fine Perfume Fragrances collection, oils up to ₹24.06/g.
Should I use a 10% fragrance load for a premium candle?
Only if a burn test shows it helps. At 10% the ₹799 oil cap falls to ₹6.62 a gram (₹80 packaging, ₹300 kept). Chunks are rated up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%. I Increased My Fragrance Load from 8% to 10% — How Much Does That Increase My Cost per Candle Across 100, 500 and 1,000 Candles? prices the change.
