I Want to Test Whether a Candle Business Can Work Before Investing Heavily — What Minimum Raw-Material Setup Lets Me Test Products Properly Rather than Making Only Hobby Candles?
Share
How is that different from a hobby setup? A hobby setup makes candles. A business test measures them: weighed recipes, logged burns, a real unit cost from production materials, and a small batch offered for sale at a real price. See hobby vs business test.
How many candles do I need to test properly? Nine for the bench test (three scents × two wick sizes at 8%, plus the better wick at 10%) and 24 for the pilot, eight per scent. Fewer than that and you cannot tell a pattern from luck.
What should the test tell me? Four numbers: your recipe's reject rate, its burn score, its material cost per candle, and how many of the pilot sold at your test price. If any one fails, change that — not everything.
Hobby setup vs business test
A hobby setup is built to make a nice candle once. It often uses whatever wax and jar came in a kit, measures fragrance by eye, and ends with a candle on a shelf. That is a fine way to learn. It cannot tell you whether a business will work, because it uses materials you may not sell with, in quantities too small to show a pattern, and it records nothing a costing could use.
| Question the business needs answered | Hobby setup | Business-test setup | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can I make it the same way every time? | Measured by eye, one of each | Scale (₹354.00) and thermometer (₹354.00); every pour weighed and logged | ₹708.00 |
| Does it burn well in my jar? | One wick, whatever came with it | Two wick sizes per scent, full burn logged | Thick C2 10-pack ₹94.40 |
| What does one candle really cost? | Unknown — kit or mixed materials | Production wax, oil, wick and jar, priced per gram | Nothing extra — the same purchases |
| Which scents work? | One favourite | Three scents in three price tiers | Two extra oils |
| Will someone pay for it? | Gifted to friends | 24-candle pilot offered at a real test price | Stage 3 (₹6,964.00) |
Beginner kits have their place. CSI lists a Scented Jar Candle Making Kit For Beginners (₹555.78) and a Candle Making Kit for Beginners (₹4,130.00), among others. Their fragrance contents are not published in our data, so we cannot tell you what they contain. For a business test, the point is different: you need the exact wax, jar, wick and oils you would produce with, bought in their normal pack sizes, so that the cost and the burn you measure are the cost and burn you would sell. The smallest practical quantity to begin testing covers a lighter first step for makers still learning the craft.
Stage 1: the bench test
The bench test is nine candles: three scents, each poured with a Thin C1 wick and a Thick C2 wick at 8%, and then — once you know which wick suits the jar — one more of each scent at 10% with the better wick. That grid answers the two questions a hobby batch never isolates: which wick your jar needs, and whether a higher load changes anything. It uses 52 g of oil per scent (16 + 16 + 20 g) and 1.74 kg of wax with a 5% allowance.
| Candle | Scent | Wick | Load | Oil | Wax |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lavender | Eco Thin C1 | 8% | 16 g | 184 g |
| 2 | Lavender | Eco Thick C2 | 8% | 16 g | 184 g |
| 3 | Lavender | Better of the two | 10% | 20 g | 180 g |
| 4 | Japanese Cherry Blossom | Eco Thin C1 | 8% | 16 g | 184 g |
| 5 | Japanese Cherry Blossom | Eco Thick C2 | 8% | 16 g | 184 g |
| 6 | Japanese Cherry Blossom | Better of the two | 10% | 20 g | 180 g |
| 7 | Dark Vanilla | Eco Thin C1 | 8% | 16 g | 184 g |
| 8 | Dark Vanilla | Eco Thick C2 | 8% | 16 g | 184 g |
| 9 | Dark Vanilla | Better of the two | 10% | 20 g | 180 g |
Three scents is the minimum for a business test because one scent tells you about that oil, not about your recipe. Choosing them across price tiers adds a costing lesson. Lavender sits at the top of CSI's best-selling sort on the pull date and costs ₹5.40/g at 100 g. Japanese Cherry Blossom is ₹5.00/g. Dark Vanilla is ₹7.90/g. The load ceiling is the wax maker's stated maximum — 13% for the Chunks — so 10% is inside it; never test above the ceiling.
Stage 2: burn and score
Let the bench candles cure before burning — cure times are not published in our data, so try more than one interval — then burn each in a normal room, in sessions of a few hours, until it is finished. Score the same six things for every candle. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, which is exactly why your own scores matter.
| What to record | How | Pass looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Melt pool | Width at the end of session 1 and session 3 | Reaches the glass by session 3, no tunnel |
| Flame and soot | Flame height, flicker, soot on the glass | Steady flame, clean glass |
| Cold throw | Unlit, lid off, at arm's length | Clear and true to the oil |
| Hot throw | Lit 1 hour, from across the room | Noticeable without being harsh |
| Finish | Wax left on the wall at the end | Little or none |
| Repeatability | Weigh two pours of the same recipe | Within a few grams; same look |
A scent passes stage 2 when one wick size scores well on pool, flame and finish, and the hot throw is at least acceptable at 8% or 10%. If neither wick works, the fix is a wick question for this jar — ask CSI on WhatsApp — not a bigger load. If a scent is weak at 10% with a good pool, it is probably the wrong scent for your wax, and a pilot will not fix it. Making first candles smell premium on a budget covers the levers in more detail.
Stage 3: the pilot batch
The pilot is the step hobby candle-making never takes: a small production run offered for sale. 24 candles — eight per scent — is enough to see whether one scent sells faster than the others, small enough that an unsold batch is not a disaster. Use only the winning wick, the load that passed, and label every candle as you would sell it. The pilot needs 4.64 kg of wax, 128 g of oil per scent and 24 jars.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 — bench test (9 candles) | |
| Scale, pen thermometer, pouring jug, 5 centering devices, wick trimmer, 5 stirring sticks | ₹1,652.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,198.00 |
| Lavender, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Dark Vanilla — 100 g each | ₹1,830.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar, 2 packs of 5 | ₹708.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, 10 | ₹59.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2, 10 | ₹94.40 |
| Stage 1 total | ₹5,541.40 |
| Stage 3 — pilot (24 candles), only if stage 2 passes | |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 |
| Same three oils — 100 g each | ₹1,830.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar, 5 packs of 5 | ₹1,770.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks (winning size, example Thin C1 20 + 10) | ₹177.00 |
| Labels, 24 × ₹8.00 (example — your printer's quote) | ₹192.00 |
| Stage 3 total | ₹6,964.00 |
| Whole test | ₹12,505.40 |
Oil works out neatly: each 100 g bottle from stage 1 has 48 g left after the bench grid, and a second 100 g brings it to 148 g, enough for the pilot's 128 g with a little spare. Wax from stage 1 leaves about 0.26 kg over, and the 5 kg bag covers the pilot. If the Thick C2 wins instead of the Thin, swap the pilot wicks for a Thick C2 20-pack (₹188.80) and a 10-pack (₹94.40).
Stage 4: what to measure
When the pilot is out in the world, four numbers decide whether the business can work. Write them down; they are the whole point of the exercise.
The cost figure also sets the floor for your price. At an example ₹499.00, a ₹273.32 Lavender candle leaves ₹225.68 before labour, packaging, courier, fees and GST — a gross margin of 45.2% on materials alone, a markup of 82.6%. Whether that is enough is a question the ₹499 margin guide and what to include in candle profit answer properly.
Stage 5: reading the result
Each of the four numbers points to one decision. High rejects: stay at pilot scale and fix the process. Cost too high for your price: change the jar, the oil tier or the candle size before anything else — where a limited budget should go covers which to change first. Slow sell-through: change the channel or the price before the recipe; a good candle offered to the wrong people looks like a bad candle. Good numbers on all four: scale the scents that sold, in the quantities the lean three-month plan and the ₹50,000 opening inventory describe.
If one scent sold out and two did not, that is a result, not a failure. Scale the one, replace the two with new 15 g testers, and run the bench test again for the newcomers only. The business test becomes a routine you repeat every time you add a scent or a jar. The order-of-purchase guide shows where it sits in the sequence of a whole launch, and bulk vs trial for ten fragrances shows how to widen it once the recipe is proven.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A 'business starter' of big bags and many scents would suit us better. This page recommends the smallest setup that still produces the four numbers a business decision needs, and tells you to skip the wax melter until volume justifies it.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco Thin C1, White Matte jar, scale, thermometer and centering-device prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; the Thick C2 10-pack, jug, trimmer, sticks and melter were pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Costs and quantities are plain arithmetic on those prices.
The 9-candle grid, 24-candle pilot, 5% wax allowance, ₹8.00 label and ₹499.00 test price are working assumptions or examples. Cure times, wick sizes per jar and throw data are not published — that is what the test measures. For help planning a test, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
