Doing everything at once looks faster and is not: four ratios, three loads and three wicks is 36 candles, and you still cannot tell which change did what. Doing the blend alone in a system you will not sell in is a gamble. The staged route fixes the system first, chooses the blend inside it, then tunes load and wick together around the blend.
14 vs 36
test candles, staged vs all at once · ₹3,875.79 vs ₹10,049.35 in materials at CSI prices, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I finalise the blend or the wax and wick first? Stage it. Fix wax, jar and candle size first; choose the blend in that system with a provisional wick; then test load and wick together around the chosen blend; then confirm. See the four stages.

Why not test everything at once? Four ratios × three loads × three wicks is 36 candles (₹10,049.35 in materials), and the results are hard to read because every candle differs in several ways. The staged plan uses 14 (₹3,875.79). See the comparison.

Why not finish the blend completely first? Because a blend chosen at one load with one wick can behave differently at another. That is why load and wick are re-tested after the blend, around it, not assumed. See why they interact.

How long does it take? With 7-day screening checkpoints and a 14-day confirmation cure, a plan started on 28 September reads its confirmation candles on 28 October. With 14-day cures at every stage, it finishes around 11 November. See the calendar.
The short answer
Answer: Staged. System (wax, jar, size) → blend at 8% with a provisional wick → load × wick matrix around the winning blend → confirmation. Not all at once, and not blend-only.
Candle count: All at once (4 ratios × 3 loads × 3 wicks): 36 candles, ₹10,049.35. Staged: 6 + 6 + 2 = 14 candles, ₹3,875.79.
Gates: Do not start a stage until the last one has a blind winner. Change only the variables that belong to the current stage.
Developing a signature: staged, not all at once and not blend-only Fix the system, choose the blend in it, then tune load and wick together around the blend, then confirm. 0 · SYSTEM Wax, jar, candle size: business decisions Provisional wick from your current range 0 new candles 1 · BLEND Two singles + four ratios at 8% with the provisional wick Blind panel picks one 6 candles 2 · LOAD × WICK Winner at 6 / 8 / 10% × two wick options Load and wick interact, so test them together 6 candles 3 · CONFIRM Two candles at the chosen load and wick, full cure, full burn test Then document it 2 candles Staged: 14 candles, ₹3,875.79 in materials. All at once: 36 candles, ₹10,049.35. 4 ratios × 3 loads × 3 wicks. Material cost = oil + wax + jar + wick at CSI prices; excludes labour and packaging.
Stage 0 costs no candles because wax, jar and candle size are business decisions you make before testing fragrance, and the provisional wick comes from your existing range. Stages 1 and 2 are where the blend and the burn meet. The all-at-once figure is a full factorial of the same variables; both totals are materials only.
Straight answer
I'm developing a signature fragrance for my candle brand. Should I finalise the fragrance blend first or optimise its wax and wick performance simultaneously?
Neither extreme works well. Testing everything at once multiplies candles: four ratios × three loads × three wicks is 36 candles, about ₹10,049.35 in materials, and each candle differs from its neighbours in several ways, so you cannot tell which change helped. Finalising the blend in isolation is a gamble, because the blend's balance and the candle's burn affect each other. Use a staged route. Stage 0: fix the system, meaning the wax, jar and candle size, and take a provisional wick from your current range. Stage 1: choose the blend inside that system at a fixed 8% load. Stage 2: with the blend fixed, test load and wick together, three loads × two wicks, because those two interact. Stage 3: confirm the winner at full cure. That is 14 candles (₹3,875.79), every result readable, and a blend that has been proven in the candle you will sell. The worked example uses Palo Santo and Fallen Leaves in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks.
One line: fix the jar and wax, pick the blend inside them, then tune load and wick together around it.
The worked example develops an autumnal woody signature from Palo Santo (15 g ₹106.20, 100 g ₹601.80) and Fallen Leaves (100 g ₹472.00) in 200 g Luxury Soy Wax Chunks candles (₹599.00 a kilo, rated up to 13% by the wax maker), with Eco Thin C1 and Thick C2 wicks as the two wick options.

The four stages

Every stage changes one family of variables and freezes the rest. That is what makes the results readable.

Stage 0, the system. Some choices are not fragrance decisions at all. The wax type, the jar and the candle size are set by your brand, your price point and your customer. Make them first and freeze them. A signature developed in a 100 g test tin and launched in a 300 g jar is a different candle. For the wick, take the one you already use for this wax and jar as a provisional choice. CSI does not publish wick sizes by diameter, so if you have no wick history for this jar, run a quick unscented or single-oil burn test first to find one that gives a full melt pool.

Stage 1, the blend. With the system frozen and the load fixed at 8%, the only variable is the blend. Pour each oil alone as a reference and the pair at 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and 50/50. That is 6 candles. Judge blind at the same cure checkpoint and choose one ratio. How many components to start with and why blends must be judged in wax cover the blend decisions themselves.

Stage 2, load and wick. Now the blend is fixed. Pour it at 6%, 8% and 10%, each with two wick options, 6 candles. This is the stage most makers skip, and it is where a good blend becomes a good candle. Finding the lowest load that still throws and reducing fragrance or increasing wick cover the reasoning. Stage 3, confirmation. Pour 2 candles of the winning combination and burn them fully, start to finish, at full cure. Then write the formula down.

What changes, and what stays fixed, at each stage
The staged plan at a glance
Stage Changes Stays fixed Candles Decision at the end
0 · System Nothing tested — 0 Wax, jar, size; provisional wick
1 · Blend Ratio only Wax, jar, size, 8% load, provisional wick 6 One blend ratio
2 · Load × wick Load (6/8/10%) and wick (2 options) Blend, wax, jar, size 6 One load and one wick
3 · Confirm Nothing Everything 2 Release to production and document
Argued against our own interest, plainly. The all-at-once approach would sell you more wax, more jars and more wicks: 36 candles against 14. It would also leave you less sure of the answer. We would rather you spent less on the right test and bought production quantities of a formula you trust.

All at once vs staged, counted and priced

Every candle below is 200 g in a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), with wax at ₹599.00/kg and the blend priced at 100 g rates: Palo Santo ₹6.02/g and Fallen Leaves ₹4.72/g. Wicks are Eco Thin C1 at ₹5.90, Eco Thick C2 at ₹9.44 and Cotton Braided at ₹12.00. Loads follow CSI's convention: load is a share of the finished weight, so 6%, 8% and 10% of 200 g are 12 g, 16 g and 20 g of oil.

Materials only · oil + wax + jar + wick · excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST
How many candles each approach needs, and what they cost
Approach Design Candles Materials Can you tell which change helped?
All at once, full 4 ratios × 3 loads × 3 wicks 36 ₹10,049.35 Only with careful analysis; every candle differs in 3 ways
Blend only, then stop 2 singles + 4 ratios, one load, one wick 6 ₹1,649.38 Yes, but load and wick never tested
Staged (recommended) 6 + 6 + 2 14 ₹3,875.79 Yes, at every stage

The staged plan costs ₹6,173.56 less in materials than the full matrix, and it answers a better question. The blend-only route is cheapest, at 6 candles, but it launches a candle whose load and wick were chosen before the blend existed. That is the route that produces a lovely signature that tunnels, smokes or goes quiet in the customer's home.

Per-candle material cost across the stage-2 matrix · 70/30 Palo Santo / Fallen Leaves · 200 g
What load and wick do to the cost of one candle
Load Oil Wax With Eco Thin C1 With Eco Thick C2 With Cotton Braided
6% 12 g 188 g ₹256.86 ₹260.40 ₹262.96
8% 16 g 184 g ₹276.97 ₹280.51 ₹283.07
10% 20 g 180 g ₹297.09 ₹300.63 ₹303.19

Each two-point step in load moves the candle by about ₹20.12, because oil at ₹5.63/g replaces wax at ₹0.60/g. The wick choice moves it by a few rupees at most. So once the stage-2 panel has spoken, the cost follows almost entirely from the load. How Do I Find the Lowest Fragrance Load That Still Gives Strong Hot Throw so I'm Not Wasting Expensive Fragrance Oil? covers how to find the lowest load that still performs.

Why load and wick are tested together

Load and wick interact. More fragrance oil changes how the wax melts and burns, and a wick that gives a clean, full pool at 6% may flood, smoke or mushroom at 10%. A wick that is right for 10% may leave a narrow pool at 6%. If you fix the wick and vary only the load, you may reject the best load because the wick was wrong for it. That is why stage 2 is a small matrix, three loads by two wicks, rather than two separate lines of tests. Why less fragrance can burn better describes the effect.

The blend, by contrast, can reasonably be chosen at one fixed load and wick, because what you are judging in stage 1 is character, balance and identity, which move less with small burn changes than throw does. It is not perfect: a blend's balance can shift a little at a different load, which is why stage 2 is scored for identity as well as throw, and why the confirmation stage exists. But it is close enough to choose a ratio, and it keeps the number of candles sane.

Check the load ceiling of your stage-0 wax
Stage 2 tests up to 10%. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% by the wax maker, so 10% sits inside the range. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is rated up to 10%, so 10% is its ceiling; test 6/7/8% there instead. For other waxes, no ceiling is published in our data; ask on WhatsApp or check the product page. A ceiling is a maximum, not a target.
The CSI principle
Choose the blend in the candle you will sell, then fit the candle to the blend.
A signature is a fragrance and a burn together. Develop the fragrance inside your real wax and jar, then give it the load and wick it needs. Skipping either half gives you a scent that is only a signature in the workshop.

The calendar, and Diwali

Diwali is on 8 November 2026. From a first pour on 28 September, there are 41 days: enough to develop a signature properly, but not enough to develop it and also produce a festive run from it.

The staged plan takes longer in calendar time than pouring everything at once, because each stage waits for a cure. How much longer depends on the checkpoints you use. Screening decisions (stages 1 and 2) can reasonably be made at a 7-day checkpoint, as long as every candle in the stage is the same age. The confirmation stage should run to your full cure. The 7- and 14-day figures below are working checkpoints, not a CSI cure specification; why curing affects throw and why equal cure age matters explain the reasoning.

Illustrative calendar from a first pour on 28 September 2026
Two ways to run the stages
Stage 7-day screening, 14-day confirmation 14 days at every stage
Stage 1 pour → read 28 September → 5 October 28 September → 12 October
Stage 2 pour → read 6 October → 13 October 13 October → 27 October
Stage 3 pour → read 14 October → 28 October 28 October → 11 November
Ready vs Diwali (8 November) 11 days before Diwali 3 days after Diwali

Even the faster route reads its confirmation candles on 28 October, only 11 days before Diwali. A festive run poured after that still needs its own cure, packing and shipping, so there is no realistic room for it. That is the honest answer: a brand-new signature developed properly from today is a post-Diwali launch, well timed for the November–February wedding season. For Diwali itself, sell a proven single oil or a blend you have already confirmed, and let the signature arrive when it is ready.

The rushed signature. A maker pours six blends, loves one at day 4, and puts it straight into a festive run with the old wick and an untested load. The candles tunnel in customers' homes, and the scent people remember is the disappointment. If the calendar will not fit the stages, the calendar wins and the signature waits.

Gates between stages

A stage ends only when it has produced a clear decision. If it has not, repeat it with a better-designed test rather than carrying uncertainty forward, because every later stage builds on it.

1
Gate 0 → 1: system frozenWax type and lot, jar, candle weight and provisional wick written down. A single-oil or unscented burn gives a full melt pool within about three hours in that jar. If not, fix the wick before any blending.
2
Gate 1 → 2: one blend chosen blindA panel of three to five people who are not you prefers one ratio at the same cure age, on hot throw and character. If two ratios tie, take the simpler or cheaper one.
3
Gate 2 → 3: one load and wick chosenFull pool, no smoke or heavy mushrooming, identity preserved, and the lowest load that holds hot throw. Stay within the wax maker's stated ceiling.
4
Gate 3 → production: confirmed and documentedTwo confirmation candles burned start to finish at full cure, with the result matching stage 2. Then write the formula card and batch record. How Do I Document a Custom Candle Fragrance Formula so My Production Team Can Reproduce the Same Scent and Strength Every Time? has templates; a repeatable mixing and curing protocol covers the production side.
5
After launch: keep a referenceKeep a retained candle and a sealed oil sample from the approved batch. When a new lot of either oil arrives, compare against them before pouring hundreds. My Fragrance Supplier Sent a New Batch of My Bestselling Scent — What Should I Compare Against the Previous Batch Before Making Hundreds of Candles? covers that check.
A signature is not the blend you loved on day four. It is the candle that passed every gate and burns the same way in your customer's home.

Shopping list: the staged plan

Oil use assumes the stage-1 winner is 70/30 (swap the split if yours differs). Palo Santo: 16 g single + 52 g across four 20 g premixes + 67.2 g in stage 2 + 22.4 g in stage 3 = 157.6 g, bought as 100 g + 50 g + 15 g (₹1,008.90; the 500 g would be ₹3,009.00). Fallen Leaves: 82.4 g, inside one 100 g. Wax: 2,576 g across 14 candles, so three 1 kg bags, which also leaves a small margin for the usual 3–5% pour and test-burn allowance (a working assumption).

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and it does not sell a blending service. CSI sells single fragrance oils; any blend you build from them is your formula. The full-matrix approach would sell more wax, jars and wicks; this page recommends fewer candles and says plainly that a signature started today should launch after Diwali, not before it.

Every oil and wax price on this page is CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar, scale and thermometer prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; the jug, stirring sticks and other equipment were pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Out-of-stock sizes are flagged, never offered as buyable. Grams, ratios, per-gram and per-candle figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

CSI publishes no throw, cure-time, composition or discolouration data for any individual oil, so nothing here ranks oils by performance. Test ratios, cure checkpoints and tolerances are labelled working assumptions for your own trials, not specifications. For MSDS and IFRA documentation, a restock date, or a quote on a production quantity of any component, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Should I test fragrance blend and wick at the same time?
Not at the start. Choose the blend first inside your real wax and jar at a fixed load with a provisional wick, then test load and wick together around the chosen blend. That keeps each result readable and the candle count low.
How do you develop a signature candle scent?
Fix the wax, jar and size. Pour each oil alone and the blend at three or four ratios at 8%, judge blind. Then test the winning blend at 6/8/10% with two wicks. Confirm the best combination with a full burn at full cure, then document it.
How many test candles do I need to develop a candle fragrance?
For a two-oil signature, about 14 with a staged plan: 6 for the blend, 6 for load and wick, 2 to confirm. Testing every combination at once would take 36.
Do I need to change the wick when I change fragrance load?
Often. Load and wick interact, so a wick that is right at 6% may be wrong at 10%. Test them as a small matrix rather than one at a time. My Candle Smells Strong at 10% Fragrance Load but the Wick Struggles — How Do I Determine Whether Reducing Fragrance or Increasing Wick Size Is the Better Solution? covers the decision.
How long does it take to develop a new candle fragrance?
Allow three cure cycles. With 7-day screening checkpoints and a 14-day confirmation, about 30 days from first pour; with 14 days at every stage, about 44 days. Those are working checkpoints, not a specification.
Can I launch a new signature candle for Diwali 2026?
Only if development is already well advanced. A staged plan started on 28 September confirms on 28 October at the earliest, 11 days before Diwali on 8 November, which leaves no realistic time to pour, cure and ship a festive run. Launch a proven scent for Diwali and the signature for the wedding season.
