I'm Getting Better Bulk Prices as I Grow — Should I Keep the Savings as Additional Margin or Reduce Prices to Increase Candle Sales?
Share
How much is the saving actually worth per candle? On a 200 g candle in live CSI materials, ₹34.52 — and only ₹2.63 of that is pack size. The rest is ₹4.00 from consolidating one month's wax into a single consignment and ₹27.89 from the published order-value code the basket already clears.
Does CSI's price per kilogram fall as I buy more? Only on some grades, and by little. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 is ₹650.00 a kilogram in the 500 g and 1 kg packs and ₹637.00 a kilogram in the 5 kg and 10 kg packs — one step of ₹13.00 a kilogram, worth ₹2.60 on a 200 g candle, and nothing more above 5 kg. CSI publishes no quantity ladder beyond what each product page prints.
What is the fastest way to test a price cut before making it? Divide. Take your contribution per candle, add the saving you have actually proved, and divide that by the same figure minus the cut. That ratio is the volume multiple you need. At ₹382.49 of contribution, a ₹64.90 cut needs 1.18 times the units — every month, not once.
What a price cut actually has to sell back
Start with the decision itself, because it can be settled without knowing anything about CSI. You have a candle. It sells at some price, it costs you something to make, and the difference is your contribution per candle — the money that unit hands the business before rent, salaries or advertising. Call it C. You have found a saving of S a candle. You are choosing between adding S to C, and giving some or all of it away as a price cut of P.
If you keep it, next month's gross profit is your usual units multiplied by C plus S. If you cut the price, each unit now carries C plus S minus P, so the units have to rise until the two products match. The whole decision is one ratio: new units ÷ old units = (C + S) ÷ (C + S − P). There is nothing else in it. No brand argument, no competitor argument, no positioning argument changes the size of that ratio; they only change how likely you think it is that the units arrive.
Put a real candle under it. This page uses a 200 g candle built from live CSI stock in September 2026 — Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at the 1 kg rate, Orchard Pear at 8% of wax weight, a White Matte Glass Jar priced per piece and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) — which comes to ₹266.51 in materials. The fill reading carried throughout this page is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil, 216 g poured; a fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, so the oil sits on top of the 200 g rather than inside it. At an illustrative selling price of ₹649.00 — yours will differ, and this page never tells you what to charge — contribution is ₹382.49.
| Price cut | In rupees | Extra units with no saving banked | Extra units with the whole ₹34.52 banked | New price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2% | ₹12.98 | 3.51% | 3.21% | ₹636.02 |
| 5% | ₹32.45 | 9.27% | 8.44% | ₹616.55 |
| 10% | ₹64.90 | 20.44% | 18.43% | ₹584.10 |
| 15% | ₹97.35 | 34.14% | 30.45% | ₹551.65 |
| 20% | ₹129.80 | 51.37% | 45.19% | ₹519.20 |
Read the third column before the fourth. A cut of 5% — ₹32.45, which most customers will not notice — still needs 9.27% more units. A cut of 20%, the kind that gets announced, needs 51.37% more units, which is not a promotion, it is a different business. And the fourth column, the one where you have banked every rupee of the saving first, is barely kinder: the 10% cut moves from 20.44% to 18.43%. That is the single most useful sentence on this page. The saving is not what decides the question. The ratio between your contribution and your cut decides it, and your contribution is large relative to anything bulk buying can move.
Sizing the pool before you spend it
"Better bulk prices as I grow" is a reasonable expectation and it is worth checking against what a supplier actually publishes, because on this store the picture is narrower than the phrase. Run the four lines of the candle one at a time. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 publishes four pack sizes and two rates: ₹650.00 a kilogram at 500 g and at 1 kg, ₹637.00 a kilogram at 5 kg and at 10 kg. That is one step of ₹13.00 a kilogram, it lands at 5 kg, and going from 5 kg to 10 kg changes nothing at all.
Orchard Pear publishes five sizes and the rate falls across them, steeply at the small end and then almost not at all: the 15 gm pack is ₹7.00 a gram, the 100 gm pack ₹3.80, and the 500 gm and 1000 gm packs are both ₹3.74 a gram to the paisa. If you are already buying the 500 gm pack, the next size up is worth ₹0.03 on a candle. The White Matte Glass Jar is the same ₹70.80 a piece in the Pack of 5 and the Pack of 10, and Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 a wick in all six pack sizes it sells. Two of your four lines have no pack ladder at all.
| Line and pack | Pack price | Rate | In one 200 g candle | Step from the pack above |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 500 g | ₹325.00 | ₹650.00/kg | ₹130.00 | — |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 1 kg | ₹650.00 | ₹650.00/kg | ₹130.00 | no change |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 5 kg | ₹3,185.00 | ₹637.00/kg | ₹127.40 | ₹2.60 lower |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 10 kg | ₹6,370.00 | ₹637.00/kg | ₹127.40 | no change |
| Orchard Pear 100 gm | ₹380.00 | ₹3.80/g | ₹60.80 | — |
| Orchard Pear 500 gm | ₹1,870.00 | ₹3.74/g | ₹59.84 | ₹0.96 lower |
| Orchard Pear 1000 gm | ₹3,738.00 | ₹3.74/g | ₹59.81 | ₹0.03 lower |
| White Matte Glass Jar Pack of 5 | ₹354.00 | ₹70.80 each | ₹70.80 | — |
| White Matte Glass Jar Pack of 10 | ₹708.00 | ₹70.80 each | ₹70.80 | no change |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 500 Wicks | ₹2,950.00 | ₹5.90 each | ₹5.90 | — |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 1000 Wicks | ₹5,900.00 | ₹5.90 each | ₹5.90 | no change |
Two honest notes belong beside that table. The first is that the rates above are what these particular products publish and nothing more; other grades and other oils behave differently, and the only safe move is to read the ladder on the products you actually buy rather than carry an assumption between them. The second concerns the load. The Orchard Pear page publishes no candle usage range, so the only published limit on this pairing is the wax grade's own stated maximum of 13% of total wax weight for Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — 8% sits well inside it. Where an oil page does print a range, the lower of the two figures governs.
Where growing genuinely does lower your cost
Delivery to you is a real cost of your candle and it behaves nothing like the rate ladders. It is charged in published flat bands by weight, so it falls per kilogram in steps as a consignment gets heavier — and that is the saving your growth is actually buying. Take one month at 200 candles: 40 kg of wax, which is four 10 kg packs of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468. Each pack carries a stored packed weight of 11.0 kg. Four of those sent separately are four consignments at ₹1,200.00 each on Standard Shipping — ₹4,800.00. Sent as one 44 kg consignment the cheapest covering band is ₹4,000.00 on Expedited Shipping. The saving is ₹800.00, which across 200 candles is ₹4.00 a candle: more than the entire wax pack step, from a decision that costs nothing but patience.
| How you send it | Consignments | Billed weight | Service and band | Total | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Four separate parcels | 4 | 11.0 kg each | Standard, under 15 kg | ₹4,800.00 | — |
| Two parcels of two packs | 2 | 22.0 kg each | Expedited, under 25 kg | ₹4,000.00 | ₹800.00 |
| One parcel of three, one alone | 2 | 33.0 kg + 11.0 kg | Expedited, under 35 kg + Standard | ₹4,700.00 | ₹100.00 |
| One consignment | 1 | 44.0 kg | Expedited, under 50 kg | ₹4,000.00 | ₹800.00 |
Look at the third row, because it is the one that stops this becoming a slogan. Consolidating three packs rather than two is worth almost nothing: the 33 kg band costs ₹3,500.00 against ₹2,000.00 for 22 kg, so the third pack effectively travels for ₹1,500.00 while the second travelled for ₹800.00. Band edges cut both ways, and more weight in one box is not automatically cheaper. Weigh the actual packs, look up the bands, and only then decide how to split an order. The one hard ceiling is that nothing above 50 kg has a published rate at all.
The second thing that scales with order size is the published order-value codes, and they are a different animal from a quantity break. They depend on what the whole basket comes to, not on how big a pack you choose: HAPPY5 gives 5% over ₹5,000, BIZWIZ8 8% over ₹12,000 and YAY10 10% over ₹20,000. A month at 200 candles buys four 10 kg wax packs at ₹6,370.00, four 1000 gm packs of Orchard Pear at ₹3,738.00, twenty White Matte Glass Jar Pack of 10 at ₹708.00 and 200 Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 — ₹55,772.00. That clears the top threshold, and 10% of it is ₹5,577.20, or ₹27.89 a candle. It is by a distance the largest single item in the pool, and it is available the moment a basket crosses ₹20,000 rather than at some distant volume.
Three things you can do with ₹34.52, and what each buys
Assume you have the pool. ₹34.52 a candle at 200 candles a month is ₹6,903.60 a month of found money, and there are exactly three honest destinations for it.
Keep it as margin
Contribution goes from ₹382.49 to ₹417.01, a rise of 9.02%, and monthly gross profit at unchanged volume goes from ₹76,498.40 to ₹83,402.00. Nothing about the product or the customer changes. This is the default and it should be, because it is the only one of the three you can reverse instantly if the saving turns out to be smaller than you thought — and savings built on a supplier's rates rather than your own measurements very often are.
Spend it on price
A cut of the full ₹34.52 takes the illustrative ₹649.00 candle to ₹614.48. That is a 5.32% reduction, which in most Indian D2C candle listings is invisible next to a shipping charge or a festival bundle, and it needs 9.02% more units to pay for itself. Price cuts work when they cross a threshold a customer actually notices — a round number, a competitor's shelf price, a free-shipping cart minimum on the marketplace you sell through. If your cut does not cross one of those, it is a gift rather than a lever.
Spend it on the product
This is the option most costing pages skip and it is often the best of the three, because it changes what you are selling rather than what you charge for it. ₹34.52 a candle buys a great deal at CSI rates: it is roughly half the vessel on this specification, or it is a move from 8% to 10% of wax weight in fragrance — 20 g instead of 16 g of Orchard Pear, which costs ₹14.95 more a candle and leaves change. Test it as a formulation change and burn-test it properly before you commit; a stronger candle at the same price is a defensible reason to hold price when a competitor cuts theirs.
| Destination | Price | Contribution a candle | Units needed to match today | Gross profit at 200 units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do nothing | ₹649.00 | ₹382.49 | 200 | ₹76,498.40 |
| Keep the saving as margin | ₹649.00 | ₹417.01 | 200 | ₹83,402.00 |
| Pass the whole saving to price | ₹614.48 | ₹382.49 | 218 | ₹76,498.40 |
| Cut 10%, saving banked | ₹584.10 | ₹352.11 | 237 | ₹70,422.00 |
| Spend it on fragrance, hold price | ₹649.00 | ₹402.06 | 200 | ₹80,411.60 |
What this page will not decide for you
Two kinds of figure are missing from everything above, and both are missing on purpose. The first is your own non-material costs. CSI sells wax, fragrance, vessels and wicks, so those four lines can be priced from a live store; a label, a mailer, the courier that takes the finished candle to your customer, a gateway fee, your electricity and your hours cannot, and no number invented here would be yours. Fill them in yourself and total the sheet as materials from CSI plus your own costs — then recompute contribution, because every one of those lines makes C smaller and every break-even percentage in the table larger.
| Line | Why it is blank | Your figure |
|---|---|---|
| Label, printing, stickers | Not a CSI product | — |
| Outer box, mailer, void fill | Not a CSI product | — |
| Courier to your own customer | CSI publishes rates for delivering to you, not for your outbound parcels | — |
| Payment gateway or marketplace fee | Varies by platform and by plan | — |
| Advertising and discount codes you run | Yours, and they belong beside the price decision | — |
| Electricity, melting time, labour | Not a CSI product | — |
| Wastage and reject allowance | An assumption until you have measured a full batch, not data | — |
| Materials from CSI | The four lines this page prices | ₹266.51 |
The second missing figure is the price itself. This page will not tell you what to charge, and it will not tell you whether your customers are price-sensitive, because neither is knowable from a spreadsheet. What it will do is hand you the number the decision turns on. At ₹382.49 of contribution, a 10% cut needs 18.43% more units; at half that contribution the same cut would need far more. Work out your own C, run the ratio, and the argument in your own head becomes a much shorter one.
One last honest note on the premise. Two reviews on the store say plainly that delivery charges are high, and one says a large order felt costly at checkout when the weight was calculated. That criticism is fair, and it is the same arithmetic as this page from the other side: freight is the line that moves most with order size, in both directions. The answer is to plan the consignment before you build the basket — which pack sizes, how many kilograms, how many parcels — rather than to discover it at the end. Ask on WhatsApp if you want the weights checked before you order.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells the wax, fragrance, vessels and wicks this page prices, and the page still says that the saving available from buying bigger is ₹2.63 a candle on this specification — not a figure worth reorganising a business around. It also says that the largest single item in the pool, the published order-value code, is reached at a basket of ₹20,000 rather than at any particular volume, so a maker at 60 candles a month can have it as readily as one at 600. Where a product's rate does not fall with pack size, this page says so rather than implying a ladder that is not published.
Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, so the candle costed throughout is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil at 8%, 216 g poured. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 states a maximum load of 13% of total wax weight; the Orchard Pear page publishes no candle usage range, so the wax grade's maximum is the only published limit on that pairing. The White Matte Glass Jar page gives a fill capacity in millilitres, which is not a weight, so this page prices the vessel per piece and makes no claim that a 200 g candle fits it. The ₹649.00 selling price and every margin and gross-profit figure built on it are illustrative and are declared as such. Shipping figures are the published flat weight bands as at September 2026 applied to stored packed weights; rates are merchant-set and can change, no band is published above 50 kg, and no delivery time, courier or per-city estimate is stated here. Published order-value codes are quoted as published. Labels, boxes, outbound courier, gateway fees, advertising, labour and electricity are not CSI products and are left blank throughout.
