I'm Making 100 Candles Across Two Fragrances — Is It Better to Buy One Larger Wax Pack and Separate Fragrance Oils Rather than Duplicate Complete Material Kits?
Share
How much wax? 10,432.8 g combined (108 candles poured at 92 g + 5%) → Soy Pearl 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg.
How much oil per scent? 453.6 g each → one 500 g bottle of each; both oils step down in price at 500 g.
When should I split? If the scents need different wicks, jars or waxes, or are poured months apart. See the decision table.
What two fragrances share, and what they do not
A two-fragrance run of 100 candles looks like two products, and the instinct is to buy two kits: wax, oil, wicks, stickers and jars for 50 candles of each. But most of those materials are identical across the two scents. The wax is the same wax at the same load. The jar is the same jar. The wick is the same wick — if both oils pass their burn tests with it. Only the fragrance oil is genuinely different. Buying identical materials in two smaller lots almost always costs more and leaves two smaller remainders instead of one.
This page works through a realistic example: 50 Mango Coconut and 50 Honeydew Melon candles in the Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml with clear cap, which CSI sells singly with its cap at ₹47.20. CSI does not publish a fill weight for it — 130 ml is the brim volume — so this page uses an illustrative 100 g fill; weigh one test pour and replace it. At 8% each candle holds 8 g of oil and 92 g of wax. The wax is Natural Soy Pearl Wax, chosen here because it is the one CSI soy wax whose price per kilo genuinely falls with pack size (₹450.00 at 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg). Its product page publishes no fragrance ceiling, so 8% is a labelled working load to test.
| Line | Mango Coconut (50) | Honeydew Melon (50) | Combined (100) | Shared or separate? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Candles poured | 54 | 54 | 108 | — |
| Wax (5% pour loss) | 5,216.4 g | 5,216.4 g | 10,432.8 g | Shared |
| Fragrance oil (5% pour loss) | 453.6 g | 453.6 g | 907.2 g | Separate |
| Jars (2% breakage) | 56 | 56 | 111 (rounded once) | Shared |
| Wicks (+2 spare each) | 56 | 56 | 112 | Shared if both pass with the same wick |
| Stickers | 56 | 56 | 112 | Shared |
Duplicate kits against one shared purchase, priced
Here are the two ways of buying the same 100 candles, each line rounded to real, in-stock CSI packs. The oils are identical in both columns, because each scent needs its own bottle either way; everything else is bought twice in the left column and once in the right.
| Line | Duplicate kits (2 × 50) | Shared purchase (100) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 2 × (1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg) · ₹5,148.00 | 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg · ₹4,698.00 | ₹450.00 |
| Mango Coconut | 1 × 500 g · ₹1,982.00 | 1 × 500 g · ₹1,982.00 | ₹0.00 |
| Honeydew Melon | 1 × 500 g · ₹1,699.20 | 1 × 500 g · ₹1,699.20 | ₹0.00 |
| Eco Thin C1 wicks | 2 × (3 × 20-pack) · ₹708.00 | 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 20-pack · ₹708.00 | ₹0.00 |
| Wick stickers | 2 × 2 sheets · ₹400.00 | 3 sheets · ₹300.00 | ₹100.00 |
| Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml with clear cap | 2 × 56 · ₹5,286.40 | 111 · ₹5,239.20 | ₹47.20 |
| CSI subtotal | ₹15,223.60 | ₹14,626.40 | ₹597.20 |
| Wax left over after the run | 1,567 g | 567 g | 1,000 g |
| Labels (non-CSI, example ₹8.00 each — two designs) | not in CSI total | not in CSI total | — |
Most of the saving is wax, and almost all of that is rounding, not price. Natural Soy Pearl starts at 1 kg, so each 50-candle kit needs 5,216.4 g and has to round to 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg — 784 g over, twice. Combined, 10,432.8 g rounds to 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg, 567 g over, once. The wicks happen to tie: with the Thin C1 10-pack out of stock, 56 wicks per kit buys as 3 × 20-pack at ₹5.90 a wick, the same rate as the combined order. The jars differ by one, because 2% breakage rounds up twice in the kits and once in the combined order. Stickers come in sheets of 40, so two kits pay for a sheet the combined order does not need.
The same comparison in each CSI container wax
How much a shared wax purchase saves depends on the wax's pack ladder. A wax with small bags rounds tightly even for 50 candles, so combining saves little; a wax whose smallest bag is 1 kg rounds coarsely, so combining saves more. The table runs this order's wax line through all four CSI container soy waxes.
| Wax | Per kit (× 2) | Combined | Saving | Less wax left over |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soy Pearl | 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg · ₹5,148.00 | 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg · ₹4,698.00 | ₹450.00 | 1,000 g |
| CSI 464 | 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 500 g · ₹5,594.00 | 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 500 g · ₹5,334.00 | ₹260.00 | 500 g |
| Chunks | 11 × 500 g · ₹6,578.00 | 21 × 500 g · ₹6,279.00 | ₹299.00 | 500 g |
| CSI 468 | 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 500 g · ₹7,020.00 | 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 500 g · ₹6,695.00 | ₹325.00 | 500 g |
The savings are modest in every wax — a few hundred rupees on 100 candles — and that is the honest scale of it. The bigger reasons to combine are practical: one wax lot across both scents (so a difference between the two products is the oil, not the bag), one remainder to track instead of two, and one reorder. The four-fragrance post shows the same logic with 25 candles in each of four scents, where rounding four times makes the gap larger, and 500 lavender and 500 vanilla runs it at ten times this size.
Each oil still gets its own pack decision
Each scent needs 453.6 g of oil with allowances. That lands just under 500 g, and both oils in this example have a real price step at 500 g — which is not true of most CSI oils. Mango Coconut is ₹5.00/g at 100 g and ₹3.96/g at 500 g; Honeydew Melon is ₹4.35/g at 100 g and ₹3.40/g at 500 g. So one 500 g bottle of each is both the cheapest way to cover the need and leaves a small remainder: 46.4 g of each.
| Oil | Cheapest in-stock bottles | Price | Leftover | Same need in 100 g and 50 g bottles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mango Coconut | 1 × 500 g | ₹1,982.00 | 46.4 g | 5 × 100 g · ₹2,500.00 |
| Honeydew Melon | 1 × 500 g | ₹1,699.20 | 46.4 g | 10 × 50 g · ₹2,171.20 |
Buying the 500 g bottles instead of 100 g and 50 g bottles saves ₹518.00 on Mango Coconut and ₹472.00 on Honeydew Melon. That is a bigger saving than combining the wax — and it is specific to these two oils. For an oil priced linearly above 100 g, the bottle choice is about leftover, not rate; the minimum-leftover post is the method for those.
When duplicate kits are the right call
Combining is the default, not a rule. There are real reasons to buy separately, and each has a clear test:
| Situation | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same wax, same jar, both scents poured in the same week | One shared purchase | Rounding once; one wax lot |
| The two scents need different wicks after testing | Shared wax and jars; separate wick orders | Only the wick differs |
| Different jars for the two scents | Shared wax; separate jar orders | Jars are not interchangeable |
| Different waxes for the two scents | Separate wax; shared wicks only if both pass | Nothing to combine on wax |
| Scents poured months apart, or in two locations | Separate kits | Wax ages on the shelf; lots differ anyway |
| One scent is a client sample awaiting approval | Shared wax and jars; hold that scent's oil | Do not buy unapproved oil |

This page owns the two-fragrance split. 25 each of four scents extends it to four; first 100: bulk or small sorts every material by when to buy it; minimum-leftover pack sizes fine-tunes the oil rounding; 105 or 110 owns the buffer; and the 100-candle template has a separate oil line per scent ready to fill.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Two duplicate kits sell more of our stock than one shared purchase; this page recommends the shared one, and says plainly that the saving is mostly rounding, not a bulk rate.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; 100 g at 8% = 8 g oil + 92 g wax). The 100 g fill is illustrative — the Yankee jar's fill weight is not published and 130 ml is its brim volume. 2 test candles per scent, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% glass breakage, 2 spare wicks per scent, 3–4 hour burn cycles and the example label cost are labelled working assumptions. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — fragrance load up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's 50 g), no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no throw, burn or cure data for any oil or wax, and no volume discount beyond the listed packs. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
