A 200 g soy candle has ten cost lines, not four. Wax, oil, wick and jar are the ones everyone remembers. The sticker, lid, label, tissue, box and the wax you lose in the jug are the ones that quietly take the margin. This page builds the whole sheet with real numbers.
₹338.98
true cost of one 200 g soy candle at 8% Sandalwood, with example lid, label and box · materials alone ₹267.35 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What does a 200 g soy candle cost to make? In our worked example, ₹267.35 in materials (184 g Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹110.22, 16 g Sandalwood oil ₹80.43, wick ₹5.90, White Matte jar ₹70.80). Add a wick sticker, a tissue sheet, example lid, label and box figures and a 4% wastage allowance and the true cost is ₹338.98.

How do I split 200 g into wax and fragrance? Load is a share of the finished weight. At 8%, oil = 200 × 0.08 = 16 g and wax = 200 − 16 = 184 g. Do not add 8% on top of 200 g of wax; that makes a 216 g candle and a different cost.

Which lines can CSI price and which can't it? CSI lists wax, oil, wick, wick sticker, jar and tissue paper — ₹276.35 of this sheet. Lid, label and box are not in CSI's price list for this jar, so they appear as example figures (₹55.00) that you must replace with your own printer's and box maker's quotes.

What margin does that leave? At an example ₹799 selling price, gross margin on price is 57.6% and markup on cost is 135.7%. At ₹499 it drops to 32.1% margin. Margin and markup explains which is which.
The short answer
Formula: True cost = wax + oil + wick + sticker + jar + lid + label + wrap + box + wastage. Oil = weight × load; wax = weight − oil. Price every line per unit, then add.
Worked 200 g: Wax ₹110.22 · oil ₹80.43 · wick ₹5.90 · sticker ₹2.50 · jar ₹70.80 · tissue ₹6.50 · lid, label, box (examples) ₹55.00 · wastage ₹7.63 = ₹338.98.
Biggest levers: Oil choice moves the sheet from ₹314.23 (Fresh Strawberries) to ₹407.09 (Santal Noir). Wax choice moves it by about ₹32.06. Cutting load and comparing dosages go deeper.
One 200 g soy candle, line by line — ₹338.98 true cost before labour, freight and GST Solid bar = CSI listed price · outlined bar = EXAMPLE figure you replace with your own quote · grey = working assumption Wax · 184 g Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹110.22 Fragrance · 16 g Sandalwood (100 g rate) ₹80.43 Jar · White Matte Glass Jar ₹70.80 Outer box ₹30.00 (example) Lid ₹15.00 (example) Labels ₹10.00 (example) Wastage allowance · 4% of wax + oil ₹7.63 Tissue wrap · 1 sheet ₹6.50 Wick · Eco Thin C1 ₹5.90 Wick sticker ₹2.50 CSI-priced lines ₹276.35 · example lines ₹55.00 · wastage ₹7.63 · total ₹338.98
Bar lengths are to scale. The three outlined bars — lid, labels and outer box — are example figures, because CSI does not list them for this jar; together they are ₹55.00, about 16% of the total, which is exactly why they cannot be left off or guessed. Wax and fragrance together are 56% of the sheet.
Straight answer
How do I calculate the true cost of one 200 g soy candle, including lid, label and packaging?
Split the weight first: at an 8% fragrance load a 200 g candle is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Then price every item that leaves your workshop with the candle, per unit. From CSI's listed prices: 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹110.22, 16 g of Sandalwood from the 100 g bottle is ₹80.43, an Eco Thin C1 wick ₹5.90, a wick sticker ₹2.50, a White Matte Glass Jar ₹70.80 and a sheet of tissue ₹6.50. That is ₹276.35. CSI does not list a lid for this jar, labels or boxes, so those are your quotes; with example figures of ₹15.00, ₹10.00 and ₹30.00 they add ₹55.00. Finally add a wastage allowance for wax and oil left in the jug and test burns: at a working 4% that is ₹7.63. The true cost is ₹338.98 before labour, freight and GST — against ₹267.35 if you had counted only wax, oil, wick and jar. That ₹71.63 gap is the difference between a price that works and one that only looks as if it does. Siblings take the sheet further: testing a ₹499 price, a ₹399 ceiling and adding breakage.
One line: every item that ships with the candle is a cost line; if you cannot price it yet, put an example figure in and mark it.
The two lines that decide most of this sheet are the wax and the oil. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo put ₹110.22 of wax in each 200 g candle, and they are rated up to 13% fragrance load. Sandalwood at ₹502.68 for 100 g scents 6.25 candles at 16 g.

The ten-line cost sheet

A candle is costed when every object in the parcel has a number next to it. Four numbers is a recipe. Ten is a cost sheet.

Most first costings stop at the four materials a recipe card names: wax, fragrance, wick and jar. Those four are the heaviest, so the total looks nearly right, and that is the trap. The candle a customer receives also has a wick sticker holding the wick to the jar floor, a lid, one or two labels, some kind of wrap and usually a box. Each one is small. Together they are routinely the difference between the margin you planned and the margin you get. Here is the full sheet for one 200 g soy candle, priced from CSI's live listings where CSI sells the item, and with clearly marked example figures where it does not.

10 Wastage 4% of wax + oil working assumption ₹7.63 Assumption — use your own records
True cost ₹338.98 before labour, freight, GST

Three things are worth noticing. First, the four recipe-card lines come to ₹267.35, which is 78.9% of the true cost. The other six lines add ₹71.63. Second, the jar alone (₹70.80) costs almost as much as the fragrance (₹80.43); container choice is a margin decision, not only a look decision. Third, three lines on this sheet — lid, labels and box — are numbers we cannot give you, because CSI does not list them for this jar. They are shown as examples so the sheet adds up, and they are the first thing you should replace.

Keep two columns: ‘quoted’ and ‘guessed’
Put every line on your sheet in one of two columns. A quoted line has a supplier's listed or written price behind it. A guessed line is an estimate. Your price is only as reliable as the guessed column is small. On this page, lines 6, 7, 9 and 10 start in the guessed column. Your job before launch is to move them across.

Getting the grams right first

Every rupee on the sheet depends on two gram figures: how much oil and how much wax are in the candle. Get those wrong and every later line is wrong in proportion. The convention used across this cluster, and by most candle makers, is that fragrance load is a percentage of the finished candle weight, not of the wax.

200 g finished candle · oil = 200 × load; wax = 200 − oil
What 6%, 8% and 10% mean in grams and rupees (Sandalwood 100 g rate, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks)
Load Oil Wax Oil cost Wax cost True cost (same other lines)
6% 12 g 188 g ₹60.32 ₹112.61 ₹320.55
8% 16 g 184 g ₹80.43 ₹110.22 ₹338.98
10% 20 g 180 g ₹100.54 ₹107.82 ₹357.39

Moving from 8% to 10% adds 4 g of oil and removes 4 g of wax, so the true cost rises by ₹18.41, not by the full price of 4 g of oil. That offset is small with a mid-priced oil and matters more with a cheap one. The full batch maths of that step — across 100, 500 and 1,000 candles — is in the 8% to 10% load post. Whether dropping load is a real saving or a false one is in the load-reduction post.

The weighing error that inflates every line. A common mistake is to melt 200 g of wax and add 8% on top — 16 g of oil — and call it a 200 g candle. It is a 216 g candle. If your jar is filled to the same line, you have either overfilled it or poured 16 g less into the next one, and your cost per candle is 8% higher than your sheet says. Weigh the finished candle once, on a scale, and let that number drive the maths.

It also helps to turn the gram figures into pack yields, because that is how you will actually buy. One kilo of wax pours 5.43 candles at 184 g, so a 1 kg pack of Chunks covers five candles with a little over; a 5 kg pack covers 27. One 100 g bottle of oil at 16 g a candle scents 6.25 candles. Those two yields decide how often you reorder each line, which the wastage and leftover post develops further.

Pricing each line

Price per unit, not per pack. A ₹354.00 pack of jars is not a cost; ₹70.80 a jar is.
1
Wax: price per gram × grams usedLuxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.00 for 1 kg and ₹2,995.00 for 5 kg — ₹0.60 a gram either way, so 184 g is ₹110.22. The 10 kg pack is ₹5,999.00, fractionally more per kilo. There is no bulk break on this wax at the listed sizes. CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo would make the line ₹93.36.
2
Fragrance: price per gram at the size you actually buySandalwood is ₹93.22 for 15 g, ₹502.68 for 100 g and ₹5,026.80 for 1 kg. From the 15 g tester, 16 g costs ₹99.43; from the 100 g or the kilo it is ₹80.43. Use the size you really buy, not the one you hope to buy later.
3
Wick and sticker: one eachEco Candle Wicks Thin C1 are ₹5.90 each at every pack size from 10 to 1,000. Wick stickers are ₹100.00 for 40, or ₹2.50 each. Wick sizing for your jar diameter is not something a price list can tell you — confirm it with a burn test.
4
Jar: pack price ÷ piecesThe White Matte Glass Jar is ₹354.00 for five, ₹70.80 each. If you breakage-test your jars or lose some in transit, the real figure is higher — the breakage post shows how to load that in.
5
Lid, labels, box: get written quotesCSI does not list a lid for this jar, or labels, or boxes. The ₹15.00, ₹10.00 and ₹30.00 on this page are examples only. Ask your printer and box maker for a per-piece price at the quantity you will actually order, because small runs of print are often priced very differently from large ones.
6
Wrap: count sheets per candlePremium Packing Tissue Paper, 50 × 75 cm, is ₹650.00 for 100 sheets, ₹6.50 a sheet. If you cut one sheet in two, halve the line. If you use two sheets, double it.
7
Wastage: a percentage of what you pourSome wax and oil stay in the jug, some candles go to test burns, some pours fail. Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption, not a measured figure. At 4% on wax plus oil, that is ₹7.63 a candle. Replace it with your own rate once you have a month of records.

Some items are deliberately not on the sheet. The wick centering device, pouring jug, thermometer and scale are equipment: they last for many batches, so they belong in overheads or in a per-batch allowance, not in the per-candle materials. Labour, electricity, courier and payment fees are real costs too, but they vary with how you sell rather than with the candle. The ₹150 candle post and the what-to-include post cover those.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A supplier's page on candle costs is tempted to stop at the lines the supplier sells, because that makes the candle look cheap and the margin look generous. Ours would stop at ₹276.35. The honest sheet is ₹338.98, and the extra is almost all things we do not sell. If your lid, label and box quotes come in higher than our examples, your candle costs more than this page says, and your price should follow the real number, not ours.

What moves the total

With the sheet built, you can test changes one line at a time. Fragrance choice is the biggest single lever. The table keeps everything else fixed — Chunks, the same wick, sticker, jar, tissue and example lid, label and box, and a 4% wastage allowance — and changes only the oil, priced at its 1 kg rate:

Same 200 g candle · 16 g oil at the 1 kg rate · all other lines unchanged
Three oils, three true costs
Oil (1 kg price) ₹/g Oil per candle True cost Oil's share of true cost
Fresh Strawberries (₹3,540.00) ₹3.54 ₹56.64 ₹314.23 18.0%
Sandalwood (₹5,026.80) ₹5.03 ₹80.43 ₹338.98 23.7%
Santal Noir (₹9,120.00) ₹9.12 ₹145.92 ₹407.09 35.8%

The spread between the first and last row is ₹92.86 a candle, and it comes entirely from 16 g of oil. That is why the oil line deserves its own decision, made against the selling price the candle is aimed at, rather than a default. Note, too, that Sandalwood costs the same per gram at 100 g and at 1 kg, so the kilo buys stock security, not a lower rate. Fresh Strawberries is one of the few oils where the kilo is cheaper — ₹60.42 of oil per candle from the 100 g against ₹56.64 from the kilo.

Same 200 g candle · Sandalwood from 100 g · wax line changed
Three soy waxes on the same sheet
Wax Price basis 184 g costs True cost Load ceiling in the data
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599.00 / kg ₹110.22 ₹338.98 up to 13%
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 ₹507.40 / kg ₹93.36 ₹321.44 up to 10%
Natural Soy Pearl Wax ₹2,124.00 / 5 kg ₹78.16 ₹305.63 not quoted — check the product page

Wax moves the sheet by up to ₹32.06 a candle — less than the oil does, but on every candle you make, whatever the scent. The cheaper wax is only cheaper if it performs in your jar and your climate; a wax that gives you more rejects can end up dearer per sellable candle. The reject-rate post sets out that calculation, and the dosage post does the same for two oils at different loads.

The CSI principle
Cost the candle the customer receives, not the one on the recipe card.
The recipe card lists what goes into the jar. The customer receives the jar, its lid, its labels, its wrap and its box. Every one of those has a price, and the ones you forget are paid for out of margin.

Margin and markup, from the same sheet

Once the true cost is known, two percentages describe the gap between cost and price, and they are easily confused. Gross margin is profit as a share of the selling price: (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. The same candle has a markup that is always larger than its gross margin, so a maker who says ‘I work on 100%’ may mean 100% markup, which is only a 50% gross margin.

True cost ₹338.98 · example selling prices · labour, freight, fees and GST not yet deducted
One cost, three prices, both percentages
Example selling price Gross profit Gross margin (on price) Markup (on cost) Cost as share of price
₹499.00 ₹160.02 32.1% 47.2% 67.9%
₹799.00 ₹460.02 57.6% 135.7% 42.4%
₹999.00 ₹660.02 66.1% 194.7% 33.9%

At ₹499 the candle keeps ₹160.02 before labour, courier, payment fees and marketing — a 32.1% gross margin. That is thin for a hand-poured product. At ₹799 it keeps ₹460.02, a 57.6% margin. Which of these is ‘enough’ depends on the costs below the line, which is exactly what the ₹499 margin post works through. If you are designing a candle for a fixed price rather than pricing a fixed candle, the ₹399 ceiling post, the ₹799 post and the ₹1,499 allocation post run the sheet in reverse.

Margin is measured against the price. Markup is measured against the cost. Say which one you mean, every time.

Check your margin with the materials-only number too
Some marketplaces and wholesale buyers ask for your ‘material cost’. If you quote ₹267.35 when your true cost is ₹338.98, you will negotiate from the wrong floor. Keep both numbers on the sheet and know which one you are quoting.

6
Compute margin and markup at your target priceGross margin = (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost. Then subtract courier, fees and labour before calling it profit.

Here is what a first 20-candle batch of the worked recipe costs to buy, with 4% extra wax and oil. You need 3,827 g of wax and 333 g of oil. The oil can come as one 500 g bottle or as four 100 g bottles (₹2,010.72, 400 g) — the 500 g is ₹5.03 a gram, identical to the 100 g, so choose on how quickly you will use the rest.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a costing page the flattering thing for us would be to price only what we sell and let the candle look cheap. This page prices what we sell from our own listings and marks every other line — lid, labels, box, wastage — as an example you must replace, because the honest total is what protects your business.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick, sticker, jar and tissue figures are CSI's listed prices as recorded in this series' catalogue (wicks and jar as verified 10 September 2026, wick stickers and tissue from the 24–25 September pull). Per-gram, per-candle, margin and markup figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 200 g weight, 8% load, 4% wastage and the lid, label and box figures are working assumptions and examples, not recommendations or market prices. For help costing your own recipe, bulk quotes, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate cost of one candle?
Split the finished weight into oil (weight × load) and wax (weight − oil), price each per gram, then add one wick, sticker and jar, plus lid, label, wrap and box per piece, and a wastage allowance. For a 200 g soy candle at 8% our worked example is ₹338.98, of which ₹267.35 is wax, oil, wick and jar.
What is the cost of making a 200 g soy candle in India?
With CSI's listed prices, materials run from about ₹243.56 (a value oil at the 1 kg rate) to ₹332.84 (Santal Noir), using Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco wick and a White Matte jar. The sticker, tissue, lid, label, box and wastage come on top; with our example figures they add ₹71.63.
How much wax and fragrance oil for a 200 g candle?
At 8%: 16 g oil and 184 g wax. At 6%: 12 g and 188 g. At 10%: 20 g and 180 g. Load is a share of the finished weight. Stay within the wax maker's stated maximum — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464.
Should packaging be included in candle cost?
Yes, if it ships with every candle. Lid, labels, wrap and box are per-candle costs just like the jar. Courier cartons and filler that vary per order are better costed per order; the packaging-per-order post shows how.
What is the difference between markup and margin for candles?
Gross margin is profit ÷ selling price; markup is profit ÷ cost. On our ₹338.98 candle sold at ₹799, margin is 57.6% and markup 135.7%. A 100% markup is only a 50% margin.
Does CSI sell lids, labels and boxes?
Not for the White Matte Glass Jar used here, and labels and boxes are not in CSI's listed range. CSI does list jars that come with a closure (200 ml Salsa with golden lug cap, Yankee 130 ml with clear cap) and tissue paper. Ask on WhatsApp if you need help matching a container to your packaging.

Non-price figures and assumptions: The candle is 200 g finished weight at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax). Lid ₹15.00, labels ₹10.00 and outer box ₹30.00 are example figures, not CSI prices or market rates — replace them with your own quotes. The 4% wastage allowance is a working assumption within the 3–5% range suggested for pour loss and test burns. Gross margin = (price − cost) ÷ price; markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost. The ₹499, ₹799 and ₹999 selling prices are illustrations. Costs exclude labour, electricity, courier, payment fees and GST. Load ceilings (13% Chunks, 10% CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
