I'm Making My First 100 Candles — What Raw Materials Should I Buy in Bulk and What Should I Purchase Only in Small Testing Quantities?
Share
What should I keep small? Fragrance oils and wicks. 50 g of each shortlisted oil and one 20-pack of Eco Thin C1 until six test candles pass.
Is bulk wax cheaper? Not for Chunks: ₹598.00/kg in 500 g bags, ₹599.90/kg at 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is the only CSI soy wax with a real break (₹424.80/kg from 5 kg).
What does the first run cost? ₹14,752.83 today and ₹5,446.88–₹6,556.08 after the test: ₹20,199.71–₹21,308.91 in CSI materials for 100 saleable candles.
The sorting rule: shared, cheaper in bulk, or still undecided
Every raw material on a first order falls into one of three groups. Some are shared: whichever fragrance and wick you end up with, you will use the same wax and the same jar, so buying more of them now carries no risk of buying the wrong thing. Some are genuinely cheaper in bigger packs: the listed price per unit falls as the pack grows. And some are undecided: the fragrance you will launch, the wick that gives a safe full melt pool in your jar. The rule is short. Shared and cheaper-in-bulk → buy the bigger pack now. Undecided → buy the smallest sensible test quantity, and the production pack only after the test.
This page works through a realistic first run: 100 candles in the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, which CSI lists with a golden lug cap, at an illustrative 150 g fill. CSI does not publish a fill weight for this jar — 200 ml is its brim volume, not a wax weight — so weigh one test pour and replace 150 g with your own figure. The load is 8% of the finished candle, CSI's working default, so each candle holds 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax. The launch scent is not chosen yet: two oils are shortlisted, Peach Melon Berry and Cucumber Green Tea, and the test decides.
| Material | Shared by every option? | Cheaper per unit in bigger packs? | Decided yet? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Container wax (Chunks) | Yes — every oil and wick uses it | No — 500 g bags are the cheapest per kg | Yes, if you have poured it before | Bigger packs now (convenience, not price) |
| Jars (Salsa 200 ml) | Yes | Yes — 26.5% cheaper per jar from 50 | Yes, after one weighed test pour | Bigger packs now |
| Wick stickers | Yes | One pack size in stock | Yes | Now |
| Tools (scale, thermometer, jug) | Yes | One-off | Yes | Now, once |
| Fragrance oils | No — only the winner is used | From 15 g to 50–100 g, rarely beyond | No | Small (50 g each), production after test |
| Wicks | Yes, but only if the size passes | No — ₹5.90 at every Thin C1 pack | No — no wick chart is published | Small (20-pack), production after burn |
Where bigger packs actually save money at CSI
The second column of the sorting sheet is where most first-time buyers assume too much. On CSI's listed catalogue, bigger packs are often not cheaper per unit. Here is every material in this order, priced at its smallest and largest listed pack:
| Material | Smallest pack | Largest pack | Bulk saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹598.00/kg (500 g) | ₹599.90/kg (10 kg) | none — 10 kg is dearer per kg |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹450.00/kg (1 kg) | ₹424.80/kg (5 kg up) | 5.6% |
| CSI 464 | ₹520.00/kg (500 g) | ₹507.40/kg (1 kg up) | 2.4% |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar | ₹40.12 each (5) | ₹29.50 each (50 or 100) | 26.5% |
| Eco Thin C1 wicks | ₹5.90 each (20) | ₹5.90 each (1,000) | none |
| Peach Melon Berry | ₹5.43/g (15 g) | ₹4.18/g (1 kg) | 23.0% from 15 g to 100 g, then flat |
| Cucumber Green Tea | ₹6.21/g (15 g) | ₹3.33/g (1 kg) | 43.2% to 100 g, 5.7% more to 1 kg |
Read that honestly. The one large, reliable saving in this order is the jar: the Salsa jar is ₹40.12 each in fives and ₹29.50 each from 50, so 117 jars bought as 1 × pack of 100 + 4 × pack of 5 cost ₹3,752.40 instead of ₹4,814.40 in fives — ₹1,062.00 saved. The wax saves nothing: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹598.00 a kilo in 500 g bags, ₹599.00 at 1 kg and 5 kg and ₹599.90 at 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is the only CSI soy wax with a real bulk step (5.6% from 5 kg). Wicks are flat at ₹5.90. Oils have one real step, from 15 g to 50 g or 100 g, and above 100 g most are priced almost linearly — Cucumber Green Tea is one of the minority that also gets cheaper at 500 g and 1 kg.
The bill of materials for the whole first run
Two kinds of candle are poured. Six stage-one candles decide the oil: three in each shortlisted fragrance, same wax, wick and jar. Then the production run follows the series' allowance stack: 4 pre-production test candles from the production lot, a 3% reject allowance, 5% pour loss on wax and oil, 2% breakage on glass and 4 spare wicks — all labelled working assumptions to replace with your own records.
| Step | Rule | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 0 · Net requirement | 100 saleable candles × 150 g | 13,800 g wax · 1,200 g oil · 100 jars · 100 wicks |
| 1 · Test candles (whole candles) | +4 candles poured to the same formula | 104 candles' worth |
| 2 · Reject allowance | production candles = 100 ÷ (1 − 3%) = 103.09 → 104 | 108 candles poured (4 tests + 104 production) |
| 3 · Pour loss on wax and oil only | × (1 + 5%) | 15,649.2 g wax · 1,360.8 g oil |
| 4 · Breakage on glass only | 108 × (1 + 2%) rounded up | 111 jars |
| Wick spares (separate labelled allowance) | 108 + 4 spare | 112 wicks · 112 stickers |
| Stage-one candles (oil decision) | 6 × 150 g, outside the production stack | 869.4 g wax · 37.8 g oil per shortlisted oil · 6 jars · 6 wicks |
| Wax for everything | (6 + 108) × 138 g × 1.05 | 16,518.6 g |
| Jars for everything | (6 + 108) × 1.02, up | 117 jars |
The production oil — 1,360.8 g — is the line that waits. Everything else in that table is the same whichever oil wins, which is exactly why it can be bought now. The 105-or-110 post argues the size of each allowance; the burn-test budget post explains how many test candles a fuller programme takes.

The lid is already in the order: the Salsa jar is listed with a golden lug cap, so no separate lid line is needed. Note the 6 + 2 wick arithmetic: the stage-one 20-pack leaves about a dozen Thin C1 wicks, which go into production if Thin C1 passes. If it does not, they are the cheapest lesson on this list — and the reason production wicks are not bought today. The wick sample-ladder post covers testing more than one wick type at once.
The six-candle test that unlocks order 2
Two scents tested is a choice, not a rule. If you want to launch both, the two-fragrance post shows how to share one wax purchase across separate oils, and the four-fragrance post runs 25 candles each in four oils. If the budget, not the scent, is the constraint, the ₹10,000 starter budget post divides a fixed sum across the same categories.

This page owns the split between bulk and test quantities on a first run. 100 lavender candles in 8 cm jars is a complete one-oil list; 75 bergamot candles from testing to production follows a single scent through every stage; minimum-leftover pack sizes fine-tunes the rounding; and the 100-candle template pulls it all into one sheet. For later runs, the ₹25,000 first-inventory post applies the same bulk-or-small rule to a fixed budget.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page tells you that our largest wax bag is not cheaper per kilo than our smallest and that you should not buy production oil or wicks until a test passes — both cost us sales today. We publish no throw or burn data for any oil, wax or wick, so the test decides.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L). The 150 g fill is illustrative — the Salsa jar's fill weight is not published and 200 ml is its brim volume; the 0.86–0.90 g/ml wax conversion is a labelled working approximation. Six stage-one candles, 4 pre-production test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% glass breakage, 4 spare wicks, 3–4 hour burn cycles and 7/14-day cure checkpoints are labelled working assumptions. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — fragrance load up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's 50 g), no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no throw, burn or cure data for any oil or wax, and no volume discount beyond the listed packs. Label and box lines are examples, never in the CSI total. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
