I'm Planning Production for the Next Three Months — How Do I Convert My Candle Sales Forecast into a Purchasing Plan for Wax, Fragrance Oils, Wicks and Jars?
Share
Why is October the biggest month when November sells most? Because Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. In the example, 80% of November's sales happen in its first half, so those candles are poured in October. October production is 1,390 candles against 700 sold.
How much does the three-month plan buy? ₹3,26,417.80 in October, ₹1,11,795.60 in November and ₹93,906.40 in December — ₹5,32,119.80 in all, at CSI listed prices.
When should each order be placed? Before the production it feeds, by at least the delivery time. For October's pour, that is now — late September. See the order calendar.
From sales forecast to production
Start with a forecast by product and month — your own sales history for the same months last year, adjusted for growth, is the most useful base. Our example business sells a 200 g candle in the White Matte Glass Jar (200 g is a tested fill; the jar's fill weight is not published) and an 85 g candle in the Golden Aluminium Tin, both at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. The forecast below is an example; replace it with yours.
Then move each month's sales to the month the candles must be poured. We assume a candle needs roughly two weeks between pouring and sale for cure, labelling and dispatch — a working checkpoint, not a CSI specification. So a month's first-half sales are poured in the second half of the previous month. In an ordinary month, half the sales fall in each half. In a Diwali November, far more fall early: our example puts 80% of November's sales in its first half, because Diwali is on the 8th. December production also includes the first half of January, forecast at a quieter 250 jars and 100 tins.
| Month | 200 g jars sold | 85 g tins sold | Sales in first half | Jars poured | Tins poured | Finished weight poured |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 400 | 300 | 50% | 760 | 630 | 205.55 kg |
| November | 700 | 600 | 80% | 290 | 195 | 74.58 kg |
| December | 300 | 150 | 50% | 275 | 125 | 65.62 kg |
October pours 1,390 candles — 2.0 times what it sells. (October's own first-half sales come from candles poured in late September, already on the shelf.) November pours only 485 because most of its sales were made in October. That shift is the single most important step in a festive purchasing plan: it moves the peak material requirement a month earlier than the peak sales. I'm Entering Diwali with Average Sales of 100 Candles a Week but Expect Demand to Triple — How Much Wax and Fragrance Should I Secure Beforehand? looks at the size of the Diwali jump itself.
Production into materials
Each month's production converts exactly as in a single order: units × fill weight gives finished weight; × 0.92 is wax and × 0.08 is oil at an 8% load; each has a 3% loss allowance. Wicks add 2% for defects and jars 1% for breakage — labelled working assumptions. The four festive scents share the oil 35/25/25/15. The month-by-month gross requirement is:
| Month | Wax | Oil (all scents) | Wicks | White Matte jars | Golden tins |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 194.78 kg | 16.94 kg | 1,418 | 768 | 630 |
| November | 70.67 kg | 6.14 kg | 495 | 293 | 195 |
| December | 62.19 kg | 5.41 kg | 408 | 278 | 125 |
The month-by-month plan
Each material runs through the same five lines each month. Net need = gross need + closing target − opening stock. The closing target is a quarter of next month's gross need — about a week of production, a working assumption that protects the start of the next month. Round net need up to packs; the rounding surplus becomes part of the closing stock and next month's opening stock. The example starts on 1 October with 15 kg of wax, a little oil, 150 wicks, 60 jars and 36 tins.
| Month | Gross need | Opening | Closing target | Net need | Order | Cost | Closing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 194.78 kg | 15.00 kg | 17.67 kg | 197.45 kg | 40 × 5 kg | ₹1,19,800.00 | 20.22 kg |
| November | 70.67 kg | 20.22 kg | 15.55 kg | 65.99 kg | 14 × 5 kg | ₹41,930.00 | 19.55 kg |
| December | 62.19 kg | 19.55 kg | 13.86 kg | 56.49 kg | 12 × 5 kg | ₹35,940.00 | 17.37 kg |
| Item · month | Gross | Opening | Closing target | Net | Order | Cost | Closing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wicks · October | 1,418 | 150 | 124 | 1,392 | 1 × pack of 1,000 + 4 × pack of 100 | ₹8,260.00 | 132 |
| Wicks · November | 495 | 132 | 102 | 465 | 9 × pack of 50 + 1 × pack of 20 | ₹2,773.00 | 107 |
| Wicks · December | 408 | 107 | 89 | 390 | 4 × pack of 100 | ₹2,360.00 | 99 |
| Jars · October | 768 | 60 | 73 | 781 | 157 × pack of 5 | ₹55,578.00 | 77 |
| Jars · November | 293 | 77 | 70 | 286 | 58 × pack of 5 | ₹20,532.00 | 74 |
| Jars · December | 278 | 74 | 63 | 267 | 54 × pack of 5 | ₹19,116.00 | 66 |
| Tins · October | 630 | 36 | 49 | 643 | 54 × pack of 12 | ₹19,440.00 | 54 |
| Tins · November | 195 | 54 | 31 | 172 | 15 × pack of 12 | ₹5,400.00 | 39 |
| Tins · December | 125 | 39 | 25 | 111 | 10 × pack of 12 | ₹3,600.00 | 34 |
Notice how the pack sizes shape the plan. Wax rounds to 5 kg bags, so each month's surplus is at most a few kilos. White Matte jars come only in fives and Golden tins only in twelves, so their closing stock wanders slightly above target. Wicks are ₹5.90 each at every pack size, so the plan buys the cheapest combination of packs that covers the need. None of this changes the logic; it only means the closing stock is never exactly the target.
Four festive oils, planned per scent
The same five lines run for each oil. The pack choice matters more here, because these four festive oils behave very differently on price and stock:
| Scent (share) | October order | November order | December order | Quarter total |

The order calendar
Each order must land before the pour it feeds, by at least its delivery time. CSI does not publish delivery times, so the figures below — 7 days for wax, 10 for oils, 14 for glass and tins — are examples; use your own. Pouring for each month is assumed to start on its first working day.
| Order | Feeds | Place by (glass/tins · oils · wax) | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order 1 | October pour (incl. early-November Diwali sales) | Now — 29 September is already late for glass on a 14-day delivery | ₹3,26,417.80 |
| Order 2 | November pour (late November, early December sales) | 18 Oct · 22 Oct · 25 Oct | ₹1,11,795.60 |
| Order 3 | December pour (late December, early January sales) | 17 Nov · 21 Nov · 24 Nov | ₹93,906.40 |
| Quarter | ₹5,32,119.80 |
Order 1 is the tight one. On a 14-day delivery, glass and tins for an early-October pour should have been ordered mid-September. If that has slipped, split the October pour: start with the scents and containers already on the shelf, and pour the rest when the order lands. That is also why the closing-stock target exists — to give each new month a week of runway.
Re-run the plan at every month end with the real closing count and, if needed, a revised forecast. Keep the dates of each order and each delivery; after one quarter you will have your own delivery times in place of the examples above. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's festive advice is often "stock up now". This plan buys October's materials now and sizes November and December after recounts, flags an out-of-stock oil size, and chooses the cheapest per-gram bottle even where that is not the biggest.
Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; Eco Candle Wick prices from the 25 September 2026 pull; the White Matte Glass Jar price was verified on 10 September 2026 for Blog 760; Golden tin prices from the 24–25 September 2026 catalogue pull. Production, requirements, pack roundings and costs are plain arithmetic on those figures.
The forecast, the 80% first-half share for November, the two-week pour-to-sale lead, the 25% closing target, the 200 g fill, the allowances, the opening stock and the delivery times are labelled examples.
