I'm Starting a Candle Brand in India from Scratch — In What Order Should I Buy Wax, Fragrance Oils, Wicks, Jars, Dyes, Moulds and Equipment so I Don't Waste Money?
Share
Why not buy fragrance oils first? Because you cannot judge an oil until the wax, jar and wick are settled. The wax sets the load ceiling — 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464 — and a wrong wick makes a good oil smell weak.
When should I buy dyes, moulds and equipment? Last. Dye after the undyed candle burns well. Moulds when the jar range is selling. A wax melter (₹2,360.00) when your pour volume justifies it. None of these is needed to launch.
Is there a minimum order at CSI? No minimum order is stated on the listed store. The smallest listed size of each product is effectively its minimum — 15 g for 51 oils, 500 g for most waxes, 10 wicks, a 5-pack of jars.
Why order matters
A candle is a system. The wax decides how much fragrance the candle can carry — the wax maker's stated maximum is 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and 10% for CSI 464 — and how it looks and sets. The jar decides the diameter, and the diameter decides the wick. The wick decides whether the melt pool reaches the glass, which decides how much fragrance the candle releases. So a fragrance test only means something once the wax, jar and wick are fixed. A dye is one more variable in the burn, and a mould is a different product with its own wax.
Out-of-order buying is how new brands waste money without noticing. Twenty fragrance bottles bought before the wax is chosen get tested in a wax that is later replaced. A hundred jars bought before a wick test turn out to need a wick size nobody stocked. A mould set bought in week one sits while the jar range finds its feet. None of these is a disaster on its own; together they can be a third of a starting budget. The ₹10,000 starting budget and what to buy first on ₹25,000 cover how much to spend; this page covers when.
The ten-step sequence
| Step | Buy | Cost | Cumulative | Settles / unlocks | Do not buy before |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Tools | Scale, pen thermometer, pouring jug | ₹1,239.00 | ₹1,239.00 | Every weighed, repeatable pour | Nothing — buy first |
| 2. Wax (trial) | 500 g Luxury Soy Wax Chunks + 500 g CSI 464 | ₹559.00 | ₹1,798.00 | Your load ceiling (13% or 10%) and texture | Tools |
| 3. Production jar | One 5-pack of the jar you will sell | ₹354.00 | ₹2,152.00 | The diameter your wick must suit | Wax chosen or shortlisted |
| 4. Wicks (two sizes) | Eco Thin C1 10 + Thick C2 10 + centering devices | ₹271.40 | ₹2,423.40 | A wick size proven for that jar | Jar in hand |
| 5. Fragrance testers | Four 15 g oils | ₹495.22 | ₹2,918.62 | Which scents pass in your wax, jar and wick | Wax, jar, wick |
| 6. Production quantities | 5 kg wax, winners at 100 g, 20 jars, 20 wicks | ₹6,206.52 | ₹9,125.14 | A sellable first batch | Burn tests passed |
| 7. Dye (optional) | One 15 g liquid dye | ₹236.00 | ₹9,361.14 | Colour, once the undyed candle burns well | Step 6 proven |
| 8. Moulds (second line) | Pillar mould + Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg + sealer | ₹2,014.82 | ₹11,375.96 | A second product line | Jar range selling |
| 9. Equipment upgrade | Mini electric wax melter | ₹2,360.00 | ₹13,735.96 | Faster, larger pours | Volume that justifies it |
| 10. Packaging | Tissue paper (labels, boxes: your suppliers) | ₹650.00 | ₹14,385.96 | Finished, shippable product | Before the first sale; boxes when orders pay |
The first five steps are the test phase: ₹2,918.62, all in the smallest sensible quantities. Step 6 is the first real spend, and it happens only after the burn tests pass. Steps 7 to 9 are optional and can wait weeks or months. Step 10 sits last in the table but has to be ready before your first sale — CSI's tissue paper (₹650.00 for 100 sheets) is the only packaging CSI sells, so labels and any boxes come from your own suppliers at their prices. If you bought everything on the list, the cumulative total would be ₹14,385.96; the core launch without the optional steps is ₹9,775.14.
Steps 1–5: the test phase
| Oil | 15 g | Per gram at 15 g | Per gram at 100 g | 15 g premium over 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spicy Raspberry | ₹99.00 | ₹6.60/g | ₹5.99/g | 10.2% |
| Cinnamon | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08/g | ₹5.90/g | 20.0% |
| Mahogany Shea | ₹164.02 | ₹10.93/g | ₹4.89/g | 123.8% |
| Juicy Orange | ₹126.00 | ₹8.40/g | ₹7.49/g | 12.1% |
| Four testers | ₹495.22 |
One of the four shows why step 5 is priced per gram, not per bottle. Mahogany Shea's 15 g is ₹164.02 (₹10.93/g), while its 100 g is ₹488.52 (₹4.89/g) — a 123.8% premium on the tester, the widest in the catalogue. The 100 g costs only ₹324.50 more for more than six times the oil. If you are already fairly sure of Mahogany Shea, its 100 g is the better first buy; if you are not, the 15 g is still the smaller risk in rupees. For most oils the gap is far smaller: Spicy Raspberry's tester premium is 10.2%.
Step 6: production quantities
Once the tests pass, buy the first sellable batch. In our example, three of the four scents pass — Spicy Raspberry, Cinnamon and Mahogany Shea, chosen to illustrate the arithmetic, not as a prediction — and the Chunks and the Thin C1 wick win. For twenty 200 g candles: a 5 kg bag of Chunks (₹2,995.00), the three winners at 100 g (₹1,677.52), four packs of jars (₹1,416.00) and twenty Thin C1 wicks (₹118.00): ₹6,206.52. The 5 kg bag covers 25 candles with a 5% allowance, so it outlasts this batch; the Chunks cost the same per kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg, so the bag size is about reorder convenience, not price.
How big step 6 should be depends on your budget and plan: the lean three-month inventory sizes it month by month, the ₹50,000 opening inventory sizes it to last until the first reorder, and bulk vs trial for ten fragrances shows which materials are safe to buy in bulk once proven.
Steps 7–10: what can wait
Step 7, dye. Colour is optional, and a dye is another variable in the burn. Add it only once the undyed candle burns well, then burn-test the coloured version too. One 15 g bottle of Candle Dye Liquid Red is ₹236.00; the dose per kilo is not published in our data, so follow the product page. Many brands launch undyed and never need it.
Step 8, moulds. A mould candle is a second product line with its own wax — commonly a firmer pillar wax such as Soy Pillar Wax (₹600.00 a kilo) — its own wicking through the mould base and a mould sealer (₹472.00). A Pillar Candle Mould is ₹942.82. Add it when the jar range is selling, and use the oils you already have. Jar and mould candles from the same materials covers what is shared.
Step 9, equipment. A Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) or a 10 kg Electric Wax Melter (₹21,240.00) saves time once you are pouring enough to be limited by your jug. Melter throughput is not published, so judge it by your own pour sessions: when a batch day is spent waiting for wax to melt, it is time. A Wax Pouring Funnel (₹1,888.00) belongs to the same stage.
Step 10, packaging. Last in the chain because its design depends on everything above it — jar size, colour, brand — but it must exist before your first sale. CSI's tissue paper is ₹650.00 for 100 sheets. Labels, boxes and mailers are not CSI products; price them with your own suppliers and order small runs first. Packaging cost per order covers the arithmetic.
Four wrong orders
| Wrong order | What happens | Example cost of the mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Oils before wax | Tests are repeated when the wax changes | Ten 15 g testers poured twice — about ₹1,062.00 at the median 15 g price |
| Jars in bulk before a wick test | The jar needs a wick you did not buy, or a different jar suits the wick | Twenty unused White Matte jars — ₹1,416.00 |
| Moulds and dyes in week one | They sit while the jar range finds its feet | Pillar mould, sealer, pillar wax and dye — ₹2,250.82 |
| Melter before volume | A jug would have done the job for months | ₹2,360.00 that could have been three more scents |
None of these is fatal, and all of them are common. They share a pattern: something bought because it was exciting or looked like 'what businesses have', before the decision it depends on was made. The sequence above is the cure, and it costs nothing — only patience. If you are building a candles-and-melts range, sharing materials between candles and wax melts slots into the same order at step 8, and if your budget is tight, where to spend a limited budget and how to smell premium on a budget decide what goes into step 6.
