Starting Budget · Wax Before Marketing
With no sales history, any wax figure is a guess. The trick is to make the guess safe: hold enough wax to test, to have a launch stock ready when marketing starts, and to answer the first orders — and keep that last part as wax, not candles, so it can become whichever scent sells.
9.85 kg
of wax for 6 test candles, 30 launch candles and a 15-candle reserve at 200 g — two 5 kg bags of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, ₹5,990.00 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much wax should I keep before I start marketing? Enough for three things: test candles, a launch stock of finished candles, and a reserve for the first orders. For 6 + 30 + 15 candles at 200 g, that is 9.85 kg — two 5 kg bags of Chunks (₹5,990.00).

Should the reserve be finished candles or wax? Wax. A kilo of wax can become any scent; a finished candle is locked into one. With no sales history you do not know which scent will sell, so keep the reserve flexible and pour it to order.

Is a 10 kg bag cheaper than two 5 kg? No. Two 5 kg bags of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹5,990.00; one 10 kg costs ₹5,999.00. CSI 464 costs ₹5,074.00 either way. Buy whichever is easier to store.

How much wax per candle? At an 8% load, 92% of the candle is wax: 184 g for a 200 g candle, 78.2 g for an 85 g tin. Add 3–5% for pour loss and tests (we use 5%). See the wax table.
The short answer
Formula: Wax = (test candles + launch stock + reserve) × candle weight × (1 − load) × 1.05. Hold the reserve as plain wax.
Example: 6 + 30 + 15 candles at 200 g, 8%: 9.85 kg · Chunks 2 × 5 kg ₹5,990.00 · CSI 464 10 kg ₹5,074.00.
Per kilo: Chunks ₹599.00/kg (no bulk break) · CSI 464 ₹507.40/kg flat from 1 kg · Soy Pearl ₹450.00 at 1 kg, ₹424.80/kg from 5 kg.
Wax to hold before marketing = tests + launch stock + a reserve kept as plain wax Example: 200 g candles at 8% · 184 g wax + 5% allowance each · no sales history assumed Tests · 61.16 kgLaunch stock · 30 candles5.80 kgReserve · 152.90 kg (kept as wax) 10 kg = two 5 kg bags ₹5,990.00 9.85 kg needed · 51 candles' worth Counts are an example to replace with your own · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
The example holds 9.85 kg of wax, just under two 5 kg bags. The launch stock is poured into finished candles in advance so they can cure before marketing begins; the reserve stays in the bag until orders show which scents to pour. Replace the 6 / 30 / 15 counts with your own.
Straight answer
I'm starting a home candle business with no sales history — how much wax should I keep in stock before I begin marketing?
Hold enough wax for three jobs, and keep the third job as plain wax. Job one is testing: a handful of candles to settle wick, load and cure — we use 6. Job two is a launch stock of finished, cured candles ready on the day marketing starts — we use 30, ten in each of three scents. Job three is a reserve for the first orders, which you keep in the bag rather than pouring, because with no sales history you do not know which scent it will need to become — we use 15 candles' worth. At 200 g and an 8% load, each candle takes 184 g of wax, or 193.2 g with a 5% allowance. That makes 9.85 kg in all: two 5 kg bags of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,990.00, which is ₹9.00 less than one 10 kg bag, or a 10 kg bag of CSI 464 at ₹5,074.00. Wax is priced flat per kilo on CSI's listing, so there is no saving in holding more than this. If the reserve is used within a couple of weeks of launch, reorder; if it is not, you have lost nothing — plain wax waits.
One line: finished candles are a bet on a scent; a bag of wax is a bet only on the business.
The example's wax in one order: two 5 kg bags of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹5,990.00) — 9.85 kg needed for 51 candles' worth at 200 g, with 5% for pour loss and tests. The Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load.

The three jobs your wax has to do

You cannot forecast sales you have never had. You can count the candles you need before the first sale.

Most wax-stock advice assumes a sales rate: sell so many a week, hold so many weeks. A home business before its first marketing push does not have one, and inventing one produces either a cupboard of wax or a sold-out launch week. A better approach is to count the candles that must exist before any sale happens, plus a modest cushion for the first orders. Those are knowable.

1
Job 1 — testsCandles you pour to settle the wick, the load and the cure before anything is sold. Six is a practical minimum for three scents: one per scent at your working setup, plus three for a second wick size or load. The minimum setup to test properly covers the test itself.
2
Job 2 — launch stockFinished, cured candles ready on launch day for photographs, samples, gifts to early reviewers and the first sales. They need to exist before marketing starts because they need time to cure. Our example uses 30 — ten per scent.
3
Job 3 — reserveWax set aside for the first orders beyond the launch stock, and for the scent that sells faster than expected. Our example holds 15 candles' worth. It stays as plain wax until orders arrive.

Each job is a candle count, and a candle count converts to wax with one line of arithmetic. At an 8% load, a 200 g candle is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Add a 5% allowance for pour loss, test burns and the odd rejected pour — a working assumption; plan 3–5% — and each candle needs 193.2 g. Six tests take 1.16 kg, thirty launch candles 5.80 kg and a fifteen-candle reserve 2.90 kg: 9.85 kg in total.

Set the launch stock by what you will do on launch day, not by ambition
Count the candles you will photograph, the ones you will give to reviewers or friends, and the ones you realistically expect to sell in the first week from people you already know. Thirty is an example. If your launch is a single stall or a few posts to friends, fifteen may be enough; if you have a stockist ready, it may be more.

Wax by candle size and count

If your candle is not 200 g, or your count is different, the table below does the conversion. Every figure includes the 5% allowance and uses an 8% load. The cheapest combination of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks packs is shown; because the Chunks are priced flat, the cheapest combination is simply the one that wastes the least.

8% load · 5% allowance · cheapest Chunks combination (1, 5, 10 kg) · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
How much wax your pre-marketing stock needs
Candle size 20 candles 30 candles 50 candles
85 g (Golden tin, listed fill) 1.64 kg · 2 × 1 kg · ₹1,198.00 2.46 kg · 3 × 1 kg · ₹1,797.00 4.11 kg · 1 × 5 kg · ₹2,995.00
200 g (series default) 3.86 kg · 4 × 1 kg · ₹2,396.00 5.80 kg · 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg · ₹3,594.00 9.66 kg · 2 × 5 kg · ₹5,990.00
300 g (illustrative) 5.80 kg · 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg · ₹3,594.00 8.69 kg · 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg · ₹5,391.00 14.49 kg · 3 × 5 kg · ₹8,985.00

Two patterns stand out. At 50 candles of 200 g the answer is two 5 kg bags (₹5,990.00), not one 10 kg (₹5,999.00): on the listed prices the 10 kg is fractionally dearer. And small formats need far less wax than people expect: fifty Golden Aluminium Tins (85 g listed fill) take about 4.1 kg. The 300 g row is illustrative; weigh your own jar's fill before you plan by it. Which jar size to start with covers that choice.

Buying wax by the bag instead of by the candle. A new maker who orders 10 kg 'because that is what businesses buy' and then pours 200 g candles has 51 candles' worth of wax — fine if that is the plan, a problem if the plan was 20. Work out the candle count first, convert it, then choose the bag. The table above is the conversion.

Why the reserve stays as wax

A kilo of plain wax is five candles in any scent. A box of five finished candles is five candles in one.

The most important decision in this guide is not how much wax to hold but what form to hold it in. Before your first sale, you do not know which of your scents customers will prefer. If you pour all 51 candles' worth into finished candles — seventeen of each scent — and one scent sells out in a week while another sits, you are holding cured candles you cannot change, and short of the one people want. If you hold the reserve as wax, you pour it into whichever scent the first orders ask for.

One 200 g candle's worth · Chunks at the 1 kg rate · Lemongrass and Lime at 100 g · materials only
What each form of stock locks in
Stock held as Money per candle Can become Risk if the scent does not sell
Plain wax (184 g) ₹110.22 Any scent, any jar None — it waits
Wax + oil, unpoured ₹204.62 Only that scent, any jar The oil is committed
Finished candle ₹281.32 Nothing else Oil, jar, wick and time are committed

A finished candle ties up ₹281.32 of materials in one scent and one jar; the same candle's worth of plain wax ties up ₹110.22 and can become anything. That is why the launch stock — which must be poured early to cure — is kept to what launch day needs, and the reserve is not poured at all. Hold the reserve's oil in bottles, not in wax: an opened 100 g bottle can still go to any candle in that scent, and an unopened one can wait for the next order. The lean three-month inventory applies the same logic after launch.

The CSI principle
Pour what must cure. Keep what can wait as wax.
Launch stock has to exist before marketing because it has to cure. Everything beyond it is safer in the bag, where it can still become the scent your first customers actually choose.

Which wax, and which bag

Three container soy waxes suit a first stock, and the choice changes the bill more than the bag size does. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load and cost ₹599.00 a kilo at every size. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is rated up to 10% and costs ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg up. Natural Soy Pearl Wax costs ₹450.00 at 1 kg and ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg — the only one of the three with a bulk break — but no fragrance ceiling is quoted for it in our data, so check the product page or ask on WhatsApp before planning a load.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more wax if we told you to hold three months of it before marketing. With no sales history, that is a guess dressed as a plan. Our listed wax prices are flat, so a bigger stock saves you nothing per kilo; the 9.85 kg in the example is enough to launch, answer the first orders and reorder on evidence. For quantities beyond 10 kg later, ask on WhatsApp — no volume discount figure is published.

Checking the number before you buy

Two checks keep a pre-marketing wax figure honest. The first is time. The launch stock must be poured and cured before marketing starts; cure times are not published in our data, so test yours, but plan the launch date backward from the pour date rather than the other way round. If marketing starts in three weeks, the launch stock has to be poured this week.

The second is reorder speed. The reserve only needs to last until a reorder arrives. Delivery times are not published; ask CSI on WhatsApp when you place the first order, and size the reserve to cover that period at a rate you would be pleased with. If a fresh bag reaches you quickly, a 15-candle reserve is generous; if it takes longer, or if your launch lands close to Diwali on 8 November, hold more. Setting a reorder point from consumption and lead time formalises this once you have sales.

Once the business has four to six weeks of sales, stop using this method. You will have a real rate, and how much wax to order at once and one, two or three months of wax take over. Until then, the three-job count is the most reliable number you have.

The pre-marketing list

The example stock below covers 6 tests, 30 launch candles in three scents and a 15-candle reserve of plain wax. Oils are bought for the tests (a 15 g tester per scent, one test candle each) and the launch stock (two 100 g per scent: 200 g covers ten launch candles and a second test candle at 16 g each, with 24 g left towards the reserve). One honest oddity: Saffron Cedarwood's 500 g is listed at ₹2,584.20 (₹5.17/g), cheaper per gram than its 100 g (₹6.96/g) and its 1 kg (₹6.87/g). It is tempting, but it is 300 g more of an unproven scent; buy it only once Saffron Cedarwood sells.

White Matte Glass Jar, 8 packs of 5 (tests + launch stock) ₹2,832.00

Jars are bought for the 36 candles you will actually pour before launch (tests plus launch stock), not for the reserve: the reserve's jars can be ordered with the reorder, in whatever quantity the first orders suggest. If you already own tools, take ₹1,239.00 off. The ₹50,000 opening inventory scales this approach up to a full opening stock, bulk vs trial explains why wax is the one material safe to hold in quantity, and sharing materials with wax melts shows how a reserve of wax can also become melts.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would suit us to recommend months of wax. This page recommends a stock sized to three countable jobs, points out that two of our 5 kg bags cost less than our 10 kg, and tells you to reorder on evidence rather than stockpile on hope.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; the Golden tin was pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Wax weights and costs are plain arithmetic on those prices and an 8% load.

The 6 / 30 / 15 counts, the 5% allowance and the 300 g candle are working assumptions or illustrations. Cure times, delivery times and wax shelf life are not published; the 13% (Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464) ceilings are the wax makers' stated maximums. Frequently asked questions

How much soy wax do I need to start a candle business?
Count the candles you need before your first sale — tests, launch stock and a small reserve — and multiply by the wax per candle (184 g for a 200 g candle at 8%, plus 3–5%). Our example of 51 candles needs 9.85 kg.
How many candles should I have before launching?
Enough for launch-day photos, samples and gifts, plus the first week's realistic sales from people you know. Thirty is our example; a single stall or a few posts might need fifteen.
Should I buy a 10 kg bag of wax to start?
Only if your count needs it. For Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, two 5 kg bags (₹5,990.00) cost less than one 10 kg (₹5,999.00). CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg.
How much wax is in a 200 g candle?
At an 8% fragrance load, 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. At 10%, 180 g of wax and 20 g of oil. Plan 3–5% extra wax for pour loss and test burns.
Does candle wax expire?
Shelf life is not published in our data. Store wax sealed, cool and dry, and ask CSI on WhatsApp for storage guidance on the specific wax. Holding only a launch-sized stock keeps the question small.
Should I make all my candles before marketing?
No — make the launch stock, which needs time to cure, and hold the rest as plain wax. Pour the reserve into whichever scents the first orders ask for.
