I'm Starting with Soy Candles and Wax Melts — Which Raw Materials Can be Shared Between Both Products so I Spend Less on Initial Inventory?
Share
What does sharing actually save? In our 12-candle, 15-pack plan, ₹462.22 on wax and oil (₹3,391.32 shared against ₹3,853.54 separate), and it cuts idle oil from 168 g to 18 g. See shared vs separate.
What fragrance load can I use for melts? Only up to the wax maker's stated maximum: 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and 10% for CSI 464. We use 8% for candles and 10% for melts, which keeps one wax legal for both. Those are formulation limits, not regulatory ones.
How much does a starter for both products cost? Our full list is ₹7,196.82 including scale, thermometer and jug: ₹5,839.82 of materials and ₹1,357.00 of tools. It makes 12 candles and 15 melt packs in three scents. The list is in the shopping list.
What is shared and what is not
Most new makers who plan both products shop for them as if they were two hobbies. They buy a container wax for jars, then a second "melt wax", then a second set of smaller bottles for the melts because the candle bottles feel committed. The result is two half-used waxes, six half-used bottles and no clear idea what either product costs. The fix is to sort every item on the list by the question does the other product need this too? The answer is yes far more often than it is no.
| Item | Candles | Wax melts | Shared? | Buy it as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Container soy wax | Yes | Yes | Shared | One wax rated for the higher load you plan |
| Fragrance oil | 8% of candle weight | 10% of melt weight | Shared | One bottle per scent, sized for both |
| Liquid dye | Optional | Usually wanted | Shared | One 15 g bottle per colour |
| Scale, thermometer, jug, sticks | Yes | Yes | Shared | Buy once |
| Wick | Yes | No | Candle only | Eco Thin C1, by the 20 |
| Jar | Yes | No | Candle only | White Matte, packs of 5 |
| Centering device | Yes | No | Candle only | Pack of 5, reusable |
| Silicone mould | No | Yes | Melt only | One mould, reused every pour |
| Melt container | No | Yes | Melt only | ₹29.50 each at every pack size |
Seven of the nine lines are either fully shared or reusable. The consumables that belong to one product — wick and jar on the candle side, container on the melt side — are also the lines that scale exactly with units sold, so they are the easiest to buy in small packs and top up. The expensive, decision-heavy items (which wax, which scents) sit in the shared column. That is the whole economic case for launching both products together: the second product borrows the first product's inventory. It is also why the order of purchase matters, and the order-of-purchase guide puts wax and oil decisions ahead of jars and moulds for exactly this reason.
One wax for both products
The single decision that makes sharing work is choosing a wax whose stated maximum fragrance load covers the higher of your two loads. Melts are usually made at a higher load than candles, because a melt has no flame and relies entirely on the warmer to release scent. In this series only two waxes carry a published ceiling, and they give you two different shared plans.
| Wax | Price per kg (1 kg) | Stated maximum load | Candle at 8% | Melt at 10% | Melt at 12% | 3.5 kg costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599.00 | 13% | Within | Within | Within | ₹2,096.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹507.40 | 10% | Within | At the limit | Not allowed | ₹1,782.20 |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹450.00 | Not published — check | Test | Test | Test | ₹1,800.00 (4 × 1 kg) |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | ₹650.00 | Not published — check | Test | Test | Test | ₹2,275.00 |
If 10% is enough for your melts, CSI 464 is the cheaper shared wax: 3.5 kg costs ₹1,782.20 against ₹2,096.00 for the Chunks, a difference of ₹313.80. The catch is that 10% is its ceiling, so you have no room to push a weak melt higher. The Chunks cost ₹91.60 more per kilo and buy three points of headroom. For a maker still finding out what melt load their customers like, that headroom is worth more than the saving. For Natural Soy Pearl and coconut soy no ceiling is quoted in this series, so treat 6–10% as a labelled starting range for tests and ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's figure before you plan a melt load.
One pricing quirk is worth knowing. The 500 g Chunks pack is ₹299.00, which works out at ₹598.00 a kilo, one rupee less than the 1 kg pack. The 5 kg pack is ₹2,995.00 (₹599.00 a kilo) and the 10 kg is ₹5,999.00 (₹599.90 a kilo). There is no bulk break on this wax, so buy the weight you need, not the biggest bag. Seven 500 g packs (₹2,093.00) and three 1 kg plus one 500 g (₹2,096.00) both give you 3.5 kg; pick whichever is easier to store. How much wax to keep before you begin marketing covers how far ahead of sales to hold it.
Splitting one bottle two ways
The oil maths uses the series convention: load is a percentage of the finished weight. A 200 g candle at 8% holds 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. A 60 g melt pack at 10% — six illustrative 10 g cubes — holds 6 g of oil and 54 g of wax. Four candles and five melt packs therefore use 94 g of oil per scent, which a single 100 g bottle covers with 6 g left for a test pour or a top-up.
| Oil and 100 g price | 4 candles | 5 melt packs | Used | Spare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mango Coconut 100 g · ₹500.00 | 4 × 16 g = 64 g | 5 × 6 g = 30 g | 94 g | 6 g |
| Fresh Strawberries 100 g · ₹377.60 | 4 × 16 g = 64 g | 5 × 6 g = 30 g | 94 g | 6 g |
| Peach Melon Berry 100 g · ₹417.72 | 4 × 16 g = 64 g | 5 × 6 g = 30 g | 94 g | 6 g |
Push the melts to 12% on the Chunks and each pack takes 7.2 g of oil. Four candles and five packs then use exactly 100 g, with nothing spare. That is fine for a planned run but leaves no room for a test pour, so if you want to test a 12% melt, keep a spare 15 g tester of the same oil — Peach Melon Berry is ₹81.42 for 15 g. The same bottle split across two products also answers a question new makers get wrong: whether a scent that sells as a melt will sell as a candle. You find out from one bottle, not two.
Why 100 g and not two smaller bottles? Because the per-gram price steps down at 50 g and 100 g. For Mango Coconut, 15 g works out at ₹6.21/g, 50 g at ₹5.00/g and 100 g at ₹5.00/g. For Fresh Strawberries the steps are ₹7.55/g, ₹4.25/g and ₹3.78/g. Buying a 100 g for candles and a separate 50 g for melts puts part of your oil at the dearer 50 g rate and leaves both bottles part-used. One 100 g per scent is cheaper per gram and leaves one bottle to track.
Shared vs separate, priced
Here is the same output — 12 candles and 15 melt packs across three scents — bought two ways. The separate route is what a maker typically does when the melts are an afterthought: CSI 464 for the candles (2.5 kg for 184 g × 12 plus 5%), 1 kg of Chunks for melts (two 500 g packs for 54 g × 15 plus 5%), a 100 g bottle per scent for candles and a 50 g bottle per scent for melts.
| Line | Separate inventories | Shared core (Chunks) | Shared core (CSI 464, melts capped at 10%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candle wax | CSI 464 2 × 1 kg + 500 g · ₹1,274.80 | Chunks 3 × 1 kg + 500 g · ₹2,096.00 | CSI 464 3 × 1 kg + 500 g · ₹1,782.20 |
| Melt wax | Chunks 2 × 500 g · ₹598.00 | — (same bag) | — (same bag) |
| Candle oils | 3 × 100 g · ₹1,295.32 | 3 × 100 g · ₹1,295.32 | 3 × 100 g · ₹1,295.32 |
| Melt oils | 3 × 50 g · ₹685.42 | — (same bottles) | — (same bottles) |
| Total | ₹3,853.54 | ₹3,391.32 | ₹3,077.52 |
| Oil left idle after the run | 168 g in six bottles | 18 g in three bottles | 18 g in three bottles |
The shared core on Chunks saves ₹462.22, about 12.0% of the wax-and-oil spend, and the CSI 464 version saves ₹776.02. The bigger benefit is the last row. The separate route ends with 168 g of oil spread across six part-used bottles, which is money parked in stock nobody has asked for. The shared route ends with 18 g in three. For a business at the start, that idle stock is the real cost, and the lean three-month inventory guide is built around keeping it small.
Cost per candle and per melt pack
Sharing also makes costing simpler, because both products draw on the same per-gram prices. Using Chunks at ₹0.60 a gram (the 1 kg rate) and oils at their 100 g rates, 184 g of wax costs ₹110.22 and 54 g costs ₹32.35. The candle adds an Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80). The melt pack adds one Wax Melts Container (₹29.50, the same unit price at every pack size).
| Oil | Oil per candle (16 g) | 200 g candle | Oil per melt pack (6 g) | 60 g melt pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mango Coconut (₹5.00/g at 100 g) | ₹80.00 | ₹266.92 | ₹30.00 | ₹91.85 |
| Fresh Strawberries (₹3.78/g at 100 g) | ₹60.42 | ₹247.33 | ₹22.66 | ₹84.50 |
| Peach Melon Berry (₹4.18/g at 100 g) | ₹66.84 | ₹253.75 | ₹25.06 | ₹86.91 |
The melt pack costs roughly a third of the candle to make, and the gap is mostly the jar: ₹70.80 of glass against a ₹29.50 container. That is why many makers treat melts as the entry price point and candles as the main product. The fragrance share tells the other half of the story. In a Mango Coconut candle, oil is ₹80.00 of ₹266.92; in the melt pack it is ₹30.00 of ₹91.85, a larger share, because a melt is mostly wax and scent. Labels, sleeves and boxes are extra: for example, a label at ₹6.00 and a sleeve at ₹12.00 — replace both with your printer's quotes — add ₹18.00 to every unit whichever product it is. The full cost-per-candle guide and the smaller affordable candle guide show how fixed packaging bites harder on a cheap unit.

| Bamboo Stirring Sticks, 5 | ₹118.00 |
| Materials subtotal (first 10 lines) | ₹5,839.82 |
| Total with tools | ₹7,196.82 |
If you already own a scale, thermometer and jug, the list drops to ₹5,957.82. If you swap the Chunks for CSI 464 and accept a 10% melt ceiling, take off another ₹313.80. The dye is optional: white matte jars hide candle colour anyway, so many makers colour only the melts, and one 15 g bottle is shared either way (follow the dye's product page for the dose; it is not published here).
Where sharing stops working
The first limit is load. If customers want a stronger melt than 13%, no amount of sharing helps; the Chunks' stated maximum is 13% and nothing on this page goes above it. On CSI 464 the limit is 10%. The second limit is texture. Some makers find that a soft container soy makes melts that are hard to release or that mark in the clamshell, especially in hot months. That is general candle-making experience, not a CSI measurement, and the fix is a test tray, not a guess. The third limit is volume. Once one product outsells the other by a wide margin, its bottles empty faster and you will want to buy for it separately, which is the point where buying 1 kg only for your bestsellers becomes the relevant question.
There is also a design limit. If your candles move to a coloured or patterned jar and the melts stay pastel, dye stops being shared. That is fine. Dye is a small line, a 15 g bottle costs ₹236.00, and it can be split when your range asks for it. Moulded candles are a different case altogether, because they need a firmer wax than a container candle, and the jar-and-mould guide covers what that changes.
Finally, sharing does not make the melts free. Every 54 g of wax and 6 g of oil that goes into a melt pack is 54 g and 6 g that did not go into a candle. When a scent is selling well in jars and slowly in melts, stop pouring its melts, and let the bottle serve the product that is paying for it. Track grams used per product on the recipe card and the choice makes itself. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles or melts. The convenient advice for us would be two waxes, two sets of bottles and the biggest bags. Our own listed prices say that sharing one wax and one bottle per scent is cheaper for a new maker, so this page says so, and it prices the cheaper CSI 464 route alongside the Chunks.
Oil and wax prices on this page are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Mould, melt container and dye prices were pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Per-gram, per-unit and total figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.
The 200 g candle, the 60 g melt pack, the 8% and 10% loads and the 5% wax allowance are working assumptions for comparison, not a recipe. CSI does not publish melt-container fill weights, mould cavity weights, dye doses or wick sizes per jar diameter, so weigh and burn-test your own. Label and sleeve figures are labelled examples only.
