CSI Wick Lab · 10 cm Double Wick
A 10 cm pair that reaches the glass inside an hour, with a deep pool and tall flames, is carrying too much wick. Test a smaller pair and a single side by side to learn whether to shrink the pair or drop it.
3 arms
2 × C2, 2 × C1 and one Cotton Braided, two 500 g candles each · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My 10 cm double-wick candle reaches a full melt pool within an hour. Are both wicks too large? Possibly, or the jar didn't need two. A full pool in under an hour is fast against the rough 3.7-hour rule of thumb for a 9.3 cm inside, but fast alone is not proof. If the pool is also well past 1 cm deep and the flames are tall, test three builds side by side.

Which three? Your current pair again (two Eco C2 in the worked example), two Eco C1 one rung down, and one Cotton Braided centred, the CSI wick whose page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". Two candles each.

How do I read it? C1 pair in band: both wicks were too big, keep the pair. Only the single in band: the pair was unnecessary. Both in band: choose on full life, then cost. All hot: you are below CSI's smallest sized pair.

What does it cost? Six 500 g candles at 8%: 240 g of oil, 2,760 g of wax, six jars, ten wicks, ₹3,682.78 of materials, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST. New wicks alone: ₹238.00.
The short answer
The verdict: a full pool inside an hour in a 10 cm jar, with a deep pool or tall flames, is a reason to step down, but test whether the step is "smaller pair" or "one wick".
The clock: about 3.7 hours by the one-hour-per-2.5 cm rule on a 9.3 cm inside (4.0 on a full 10 cm); a full pool at 1 hour is 27% of that. Acceptance band on this page: about 2–4 hours (judgement).
The test: three arms, two candles each: 2 × C2 (control), 2 × C1, 1 × Cotton Braided; burns 2–3 timed, depth and flame read, then full life.
The honest limit: Eco C1 is CSI's smallest sized, tabbed wick; if two C1 still run hot and one Cotton Braided rings, the answer is below or between our rungs.
Time to a full pool, burn 2: three builds in the same 10 cm jar Worked example, two 500 g candles per arm at 8% Orchard Pear in CSI 464. Each dot is one candle; labels give pool depth at full pool and trimmed flame height. The band is our judgement from rules of thumb, not CSI data. acceptance band, about 2–4 h (judgement) under 1 h ~1 h per 2.5 cm: 3.7 h 0 h 1 h 2 h 3 h 4 h 5 h Time from lighting to the pool meeting the glass all round, burn 2 (hours) A · two Eco C2 current build 0.9 h · 1.6 cm deep, ~6 cm flames 1.0 h · 1.5 cm, ~6 cm B · two Eco C1 one rung down 2.6 h · 0.8 cm deep, ~3.5 cm 2.8 h · 0.9 cm, ~3.5 cm C · one Cotton Braided a pair unnecessary? 3.4 h · 0.9 cm deep, ~4 cm 3.6 h · 1.0 cm, ~4 cm Read: A is fast and hot on both counts, so its speed is a symptom, not a quirk. B and C both land in the band, calm: both C2 wicks were too big, and one wick would also do. Full life chooses. Had only C landed, the pair was unnecessary. Illustrative readings, not CSI data. Fast alone is not proof of over-wicking; depth, flame and soot decide with it.
The step-down as a stopwatch: each dot is one 500 g candle's time to a full pool on burn 2, with its depth and flame height. The pale band is this page's acceptance band (about 2–4 hours, our judgement from the one-hour-per-2.5 cm rule and the common 3–4 hour expectation); the dark strip is "under an hour". In this worked example the C2 pair is fast and hot, and the C1 pair and the single both land in the band. Illustrative readings, not CSI data.
Straight answer
My 10 cm double-wick candle reaches a full melt pool within one hour. Are both wicks probably too large?
Probably too much wick, yes, if the speed comes with a deep pool and tall flames; but "both too large" is only one of two explanations, and a three-arm test tells them apart. In a jar about 9.3 cm across the inside (CSI's 10 cm listing on our 0.35 cm wall assumption), the very rough rule of one hour per 2.5 cm gives about 3.7 hours, and many makers expect a full pool within about 3–4 hours. A pool to the glass in under an hour is well outside that, and if the pool is also past about 1 cm deep, the trimmed flames run above about 5 cm, or the wicks cap with carbon, the pair is putting in more heat than the jar needs. Fast alone, with a shallow pool and calm flames, is not a fail. To find out what "less heat" should look like, pour three builds, two candles each: your current pair as the control, a pair one rung down (two Eco C1, if you are on C2), and one Cotton Braided centred, the CSI wick whose page describes "large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". If the C1 pair lands in band, both wicks were too big. If only the single does, the jar didn't need two at this fill and oil. If everything still runs hot, you are below CSI's smallest sized pair, and we would rather say so than sell you another pack.
One line: under an hour plus a deep pool means too much wick; 2 × C1 against 1 × Cotton Braided tells you whether to shrink the pair or drop it.
The two new arms: Eco C1 (20 for ₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 29 September 2026) and Cotton Braided (10 for ₹120.00): ₹238.00, if you already own the jars, wax, oil and C2 pack.

What "under an hour" means in a 10 cm jar

Speed is a symptom when it travels with depth and flame. On its own, it's a number.

Start with the clock. The commonly cited rule of thumb is about one hour of burning per 2.5 cm of jar width, which is about 4.0 hours on the listed 10 cm and 3.7 hours on a 9.3 cm inside; a full pool within about 3–4 hours of a first burn is another common expectation. Neither is CSI data, and both are rough. A full pool at one hour is 27% of the 3.7-hour figure. For a single centred wick that would mean a pool front racing 4.65 cm out from the middle in an hour. With a pair, each wick sits only 2.33 cm from the glass along the wick line, so the pool reaches the glass there first, and "full pool" is decided at the two points at right angles, 5.20 cm from each wick.

That is why a pair can look fast without being wrong. Each wick serves 33.96 cm², the area of a single jar of 6.58 cm (D ÷ √2), and by the same rough rule that jar would expect about 2.6 hours, not 3.7. So a pair that reaches the glass in two and a half hours may be perfectly healthy. Under one hour is a different matter: faster than even the equivalent single jar would suggest, by a wide margin.

Is it really "too fast"? · the three signals, read together
A fast pool alone is not proof of over-wicking (rule of thumb); read it with depth and flame · thresholds are commonly cited rules of thumb and our judgement
Signal Fast and fine Fast and too hot How to read it
Time to full pool (burns 2–3) under the ~3.7 h rule of thumb, depth and flame in range under about 1 h, with the two signals below clock from lighting to the pool touching the glass all round
Pool depth at full pool about 0.5–1 cm well past 1 cm and still deepening skewer beside each wick and at the midpoint
Trimmed flame height, carbon, soot about 2.5–5 cm, no caps, no soot taller, carbon caps, smoke or soot on the glass trim to about 5–6 mm first; read at 1 h

Before you pour anything, rule out the boring causes of speed: a first timing taken on a relight while the candle was still warm, a hot afternoon room, a fan, a shallow fill. The 45-minute post for 8 cm jars has the full confounder list and a 15-minute timeline. If you want to know whether each wick of the pair is too big on its own or the two are only too hot together, light one wick alone for an hour: that single-lit diagnostic is the 8.5 cm double-wick post. This page assumes the speed is real and asks what to step down to.

Mistake: calling a fast pool "efficient" and moving on. What happens: a pair that is too hot at the top of a 10 cm jar commonly gets hotter as the wax level falls and the glass above the pool absorbs heat; the problem you ignored at burn 2 shows up at burn 10. Fix: read depth and flame with the clock, and don't approve any build until it has burned to about 1 cm left with the glass watched, not touched.

Three arms, and the question each one asks

A smaller pair answers one question. A single wick answers the one people forget to ask.

"Both wicks too large" assumes the jar needs two. Often it does, and the hub, the 10–12 cm hub, starts from a single wick that overheats the centre. But a 500 g candle at 8% of a light oil in a jar 9.3 cm inside is close enough to the boundary that a well-chosen single can work, and if it does, it is simpler to make. So the step-down has three arms, not two.

The three-arm step-down · 10 cm jar · worked example
Two candles per arm · 500 g at 8% Orchard Pear in CSI 464 · Apothecary 500 gm · the only change is the wick build
Arm Build Layout Candles Wicks The question it answers
A (control) Two Eco C2 (your current pair) centre to centre 4.65 cm, on a diameter 2 4 is the fast pool repeatable in a fresh pour?
B Two Eco C1 the same spacing 2 4 are both wicks simply one rung too big?
C One Cotton Braided centred 2 2 does this jar need a pair at all at this fill and oil?

Arm A is not wasted. Re-pouring your current pair alongside the others means all six candles share wax, oil, jar batch, pour and cure, so if the new A candles are not fast, the first candle was the outlier and you have saved yourself a change. Arm B is the obvious step: CSI's only sized rung below C2 is C1, so two C1 is the next pair down. If you are already on two C1, arm B does not exist at CSI, and the test becomes your pair against arm C. Arm C is chosen because the Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made page describes "large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; at 9.3 cm inside that is inside the range the page describes.

Spacing stays put
Keep the pairs on a diameter at the spacing you already use (4.65 cm centre to centre, the halfway starting point, in the worked example). A pair that is too hot can also be too close together; if your midpoint pool is much deeper than beside each wick, read the too-close spacing ladder before stepping size. Change one thing at a time.

Running the step-down

Six candles, one variable, and a stopwatch that starts at burn 2.

The worked example pours the Apothecary 500 gm with CSI 464 and Orchard Pear at 8%: 500 g = 40 g of oil + 460 g of wax. The Orchard Pear page does not state a candle load in the text we captured, so the working limit is CSI 464's "up to 10%"; 8% is inside it. Two candles per arm is the minimum that shows an odd candle.

1
Rule out the quick confoundersWas the "under an hour" a second or later burn, in still air, in a normal room, with wax trimmed and the candle at room temperature? A warm room, a relight on a still-warm candle or a fan can all speed a pool; the full confounder list is the 45-minute post. If any applied, re-time one session before pouring anything.
2
Pour all six the same day500 g each at 8% Orchard Pear in CSI 464 (40 g + 460 g), 80–85°C into clean, pre-warmed Apothecary jars (CSI 464's 80–90°C pour range, limited by the jar's 85°C wording). Same jar batch. Pairs on a diameter at 4.65 cm; arm C centred and held with a centering device.
3
Cure identicallyThe Orchard Pear page states no cure time in the text we captured; the 25 of 102 CSI oil pages that do say 48–72 hours for soy, and many makers wait about a week. Hold the same cure for all six.
4
Time burns 2 and 3, not just burn 1Burn 1 is the slow one. From lighting, note the clock time the pool first touches the glass all round, then depth beside each wick and at the midpoint, and the trimmed flame height at 1 hour. Full cool-down between sessions; still air; burn within sight.
5
Watch the glass, not your fingersNote any flame leaning towards the glass and any soot on the inside wall. If you own a non-contact thermometer, read the same spot at the same clock time each session (CSI lists none); never judge glass heat by touch.
6
Carry the winner to about 1 cm leftBurns 2–3 choose the build; the full life approves it. A build that is calm at the top of a wide jar can run hot in the lower third; late-life behaviour of pairs is the double-wick late-heat post.

Reading the step-down

Two good answers are possible. Choose the one that survives the bottom of the jar.
Reading the step-down · burns 2–3 (our judgement, labelled)
"In band" = full pool in about 2–4 h on burns 2–3 with depth about 0.5–1 cm and trimmed flames about 2.5–5 cm, no soot · "hot" = under about 1 h with depth past 1 cm or tall flames or carbon
A · 2 × C2 B · 2 × C1 C · 1 × Cotton Braided Answer Purchase
Hot again In band In band or slow Both wicks were too big; the pair stays, one rung down C1 for production after full life
Hot again Still fast and hot In band A pair is unnecessary at this fill and oil; one wick does the job Cotton Braided after full life
Hot again In band In band Two good answers: choose on full-life results, then on cost and look C1 pair ₹11.80 or Cotton Braided ₹12.00 a candle
Hot again Fast but calm (depth and flame in range) Rings at the glass Fast alone is not a fail: the C1 pair is the candidate C1 after full life
Hot again Hot Hot Below CSI's smallest sized, tabbed wick for a pair in this system Re-check fill, oil and room; ask us; another supplier's smaller wick is a fair option
In band this time — — Your first candle was the outlier (warm room, relight, draught) Nothing; carry A to full life

Thresholds are our judgement, built from commonly cited rules of thumb so they can be read with a clock, a ruler and a skewer. Keep them identical across all six candles. The band's lower edge is deliberately loose: a pair in a 10 cm jar has every right to beat the single-wick clock, as the equivalent-jar sum above shows. What it may not do is reach the glass in an hour and run deep and tall.

Argued against our own interest: if arm C wins, you need one wick per candle instead of two, and if arm B wins, the cheaper of our two rungs. Either way your wick spend falls. We would still rather you ran the step-down than kept buying C2 for a candle that is too hot.

When both B and C land in band, the full life decides, and only then cost and appearance. Late in a wide jar, pairs commonly gain heat faster than singles; if the C1 pair is calm at the top but climbs near the bottom, the multi-wick life-cycle post sets out which lever to tune for which depth. If your result splits C1 from C2 the other way, too slow on C1 and too fast on C2, your answer sits between CSI's rungs and the gap post, the slightly-small, clearly-large post, lists the options.

What each answer costs per candle

The wick is the smallest line on the bill. That is why the decision is about heat, not money.
Wick cost by answer · CSI live pricing, 29 September 2026
Per candle and per 100 production candles · flat per-wick prices at every pack size · excludes everything but the wicks
Answer Wicks per candle Wick cost per candle Wicks for 100 candles Against a C2 pair
Keep the C2 pair 2 × C2 ₹18.88 ₹1,888.00 —
Step down to a C1 pair 2 × C1 ₹11.80 ₹1,180.00 ₹7.08 less a candle
Drop to one Cotton Braided 1 × Cotton Braided ₹12.00 ₹1,200.00 ₹6.88 less a candle

One Cotton Braided costs ₹0.20 more per candle than a C1 pair, so on wicks alone the two winners are almost level. The real differences are labour (one wick to set instead of two, and one sticker: ₹5.00 for two), appearance (some buyers like two flames in a wide jar), and how each build behaves in the final third. Choose on full-life results first. A 500 g candle's material cost is dominated by the jar and the wax, so the step-down is a safety and quality decision that happens to save a little money, not the other way round.

What to buy, and what to skip

Five items, in the order the step-down needs them, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candles are counted at 40 g (500 g fill) and 12 g (150 g).

Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The one CSI wick whose page points at wide jars: "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", with "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"; "preventing tunneling" is the page's own claim. At 9.3 cm inside it is within the range its page describes, which is why it gets a fair arm here: if one of these reaches the glass in the band with a calm flame, your jar did not need two wicks at this fill and oil. A 10.16 cm wick stands clear of a 500 g fill in the Apothecary's 10.8 cm height with room to trim. Honest limit: the page gives no width, and we cannot tell you whether one Cotton Braided puts out more or less heat than a C1 pair in your candle; that is what the arm is for.

The CSI principle
When a pair is too hot, test a smaller pair and a single side by side.
A full pool in under an hour with a deep pool and tall flames says "too much wick". It does not say whether the fix is two smaller wicks or one. Three arms, two candles each, timed on burns 2 and 3, tell you which, and the full life confirms it.
"A fast pool is only a fault when it brings a deep pool and a tall flame with it. Then the question is not how much smaller, but how many."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, jar, oil and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that either winning answer cuts your wick spend, that a fast pool alone is not a fault, and that if two C1 run too hot, nothing smaller in our range is sized and tabbed.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, jar and temperature wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (the Orchard Pear page states no candle load or cure time), we say so.

The acceptance band, the 0.35 cm wall, the 500 g fill, the 4.65 cm spacing and the worked-example timings are our judgement or illustration; melt-pool times, depths and flame heights are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Is it bad if my candle gets a full melt pool in one hour?
Not on its own. In a jar about 9.3 cm inside, the rough rule of thumb is about 3.7 hours, so under an hour is fast; it matters when the pool is also well past 1 cm deep, the flames are tall or the wicks cap with carbon. Read all three before changing anything.
How long should a 10 cm candle take to melt to the edge?
A very rough rule of thumb is one hour per 2.5 cm of width: about 4.0 hours for 10 cm, 3.7 hours for a 9.3 cm inside. A full pool within about 3–4 hours is another common expectation. Both are rules of thumb; measure your own jar.
Should I use smaller wicks if my double-wick candle burns too fast?
Test it rather than switch: pour your current pair again, a pair one size smaller, and one single wick suited to wide jars, two candles each. The smaller pair tells you whether both wicks were too big; the single tells you whether you needed two at all.
Can one wick be enough for a 10 cm candle?
Sometimes, depending on wax, oil, load and fill. CSI's Cotton Braided page describes it for "large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". Test one centred against your pair before deciding.
Do two wicks always burn hotter than one?
Commonly a pair puts more total heat into a jar than one wick, and the two flames heat each other; that is a tendency, not a rule. It is why a pair is tested against a single rather than assumed.
What is the smallest CSI wick for a double-wick candle?
Eco C1 is CSI's smallest sized, tabbed wick, so two C1 is the smallest sized pair. If two C1 still run too hot, CSI lists nothing smaller that is sized and tabbed; ask us, or consider another supplier.
Before you buy another pack of the same wick
Pour 2 × C2, 2 × C1 and 1 × Cotton Braided, two candles each, and time burns 2 and 3.
Rule out a warm room and a relight, then read time to full pool, depth and flame together. C1 pair in band: smaller pair. Only the single in band: one wick. All hot: below CSI's smallest sized pair. Send us your timings on WhatsApp.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on 10–12 cm jars and multi-wick problems (4261–4280). It owns the three-arm step-down for a 10 cm double-wick candle that reaches a full pool within an hour: your current pair, a pair one rung down (2 × C1) and one Cotton Braided, judged against a declared rule-of-thumb clock and depth, answering whether both wicks were too large or a pair was unnecessary.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Black Matte Glass Jar, Eco Candle Wicks, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles, Orchard Pear. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the wick advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (500 g at 8% = 40 g oil + 460 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g); Orchard Pear's page states no candle load, so CSI 464's "up to 10%" is the working limit (a formulation limit, not a regulatory one). The 500 g fill is a worked example within the Apothecary page's stated "~500 g - 700 g". The 0.35 cm wall is an assumption; pool area = π r² on the inside radius; the equivalent jar D ÷ √2 is geometry. Melt-pool times (about 3–4 hours; about an hour per 2.5 cm), depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and flame height (about 2.5–5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb; the 2–4 hour band and the decision rule are editorial judgement; the dot-plot timings are illustrative. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
