My Candle Burns Cleanly but Extremely Quickly — Should Burn Rate Still Make Me Reconsider Wick Size?
Share
So does burn rate still matter? It is the only thing that decides what the customer actually gets. In a 130 g jar at 8% — 119.6 g of wax — a rate of 8.4 g/hr and a rate of 5.6 g/hr give very different candles out of identical ₹142.18 of material.
How do I measure it? Weigh the whole candle — jar included, lid off — before and after a timed session, then divide the loss by the hours. A ₹354 scale is the entire capital requirement.
And if the rate is too high? You bracket. CSI lists two Eco cotton sizes (C1 and C2) plus cotton braided and wooden wicks, with no stated diameters for C1 or C2 — so "one size down" exists only from C2 to C1. Below that your levers are wick construction, wick count, jar diameter and fill weight.
What a clean burn actually proves
Start by giving a clean burn full credit, because it has earned it. If your candle produces an even surface after cure, keeps the glass clear, leaves no carbon ball on the wick, opens a pool all the way to the wall, and finishes the jar without a ring of waste, you have already solved most of the problems that bring makers to a guide like this one. That is a genuinely well-built candle in every respect that can be photographed.
The trouble is the word "most". Appearance faults are the symptoms of a mismatch — too little wick for the diameter, too much fragrance for the wick, a pour too hot for the glass, a cure too short for the wax. Absence of symptoms tells you the mismatch is not severe. It does not tell you where inside the acceptable band you have landed, and the acceptable band is wide. Two candles can both be faultless to look at and differ substantially in how much wax they burn in an hour.
There is a second reason clean-and-fast is the hardest version to catch: it produces no complaint until much later. A sooting candle generates an email in week one. A tunnelling candle generates a photograph. A candle that burns beautifully and dies early generates a quiet non-reorder, several months after the batch has shipped and long after you could have traced it to a wick decision. The only way to see it is to have measured it before you shipped.
The seven checks, and the eighth
Set out properly, the list makes the gap obvious. Each row is a real check worth keeping. The right-hand column is the honest statement of its limit.
| # | Check | What it genuinely rules out | What it says about grams per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Even, unblemished top after cure | Pour temperature and cooling-rate faults; a glass too cold for the wax | Nothing. This is set before the candle is ever lit. |
| 2 | Glass stays clear — no grey film | Deposited carbon, the hard stop that ends a configuration outright | Nothing. A clean-burning wick can still be a thirsty one. |
| 3 | No mushroom on the wick tip | A wick drawing more material than it can finish burning at the tip | Little. It narrows the range; it gives no figure. |
| 4 | No tunnel — wax clears to the wall | An undersized wick for the diameter, and buried hot throw | Nothing on the upper side. Tunnelling is the opposite failure. |
| 5 | Pool reaches the glass within the session | A pool too small to release fragrance from the whole surface | Nothing. Reaching the wall quickly is compatible with any rate above it. |
| 6 | Flame sits steady, does not flare | The flame-side hard stop. Keep this one absolutely. | Nothing with units — flame height has no repeatable measurement. |
| 7 | Little wax left when the candle dies | Waste the customer paid for and could not use | Only in combination with hours. On its own it is a volume, not a rate. |
| 8 | Grams consumed per hour | Nothing visible — and everything commercial | It is the figure. (before − after) ÷ hours. |
Row seven deserves a note, because it is the one makers offer as a rebuttal. "My candle finishes the jar cleanly, so surely it is efficient." Finishing the jar is about how much of the fill was reachable, which is a different and equally important question — it is what the leftover-wax posts later in this series are for. A candle can consume 100% of its fill and consume it twice as fast as it needed to. Completeness and rate are independent. You need both numbers, and only one of them is visible.
Putting a number on the missing check
The measurement is deliberately dull. Dull is the point: a procedure you can repeat identically in December is worth more than a clever one you will improvise differently each time.
It is worth being explicit about what this number is not. It is your rate, for your wax, your load, your jar, your room and your trim discipline. No CSI product page publishes a burn rate or a burn time, and nobody can hand you a target to compare against — which is precisely why the measurement is worth taking. The figure that matters is the difference between two of your own candles under identical conditions, and that difference is knowable this week.
The clean-and-fast decision tray
You have a clean control and a rate you consider too high. Pour a tray of four and you will know what to do within a fortnight. Four candles is the smallest tray that separates the wick question from the jar question, and in a 130 g vessel it is inexpensive.
| Candle | What changes | Question it answers | If it wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Control | Nothing — your current clean, fast build | What is the rate I am actually trying to beat? | Your current build is fine and the problem was your expectation of hours, not the candle. |
| 2 · One size down | Eco Thick (C2) → Thin (C1), nothing else | Is the single real downward size step in the range enough? | Cheapest possible outcome: ₹3.54 less wick per candle and a lower rate. Confirm the pool still reaches the wall. |
| 3 · Different construction | Cotton Braided Wicks at ₹12 each | Does a different wick build suit this diameter better than either Eco size? | You have a third candidate permanently available, flat-priced from 10 to 1,000 pieces. |
| 4 · Lower load, same wick | 8% → a lower load, wick unchanged | Is the wick responding to the fragrance rather than the diameter? | Re-test the wick at the new load. Fragrance and dye can change how a wick performs, so a load change invalidates the old rate. |
Notice that candle 4 is not a wick change at all. It is there because fragrance load genuinely interacts with wick behaviour, and a maker who changes the wick and the load in the same batch has learned nothing about either. If you intend to adjust the load as well, adjust it in a separate candle — and note that Eco Soy CSI 400's page states no maximum fragrance load at all, which is a reason to stay conservative and to hold at a figure you have burned rather than one you have read.
Four levers when "wick down" is not available
Be clear about the shape of the range before you plan a test. CSI lists two Eco cotton sizes — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2) — and neither page states a diameter; those names appear only as Shopify variant titles. Cotton Braided Wicks state "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and a wick height of 10.16 cm. Eco Candle Wicks Loose state "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters". Performance Wooden Wicks state no size. That is the whole published picture, and it does not contain a graded ladder. So if you are on C1 already, there is no smaller Eco cotton size to drop to, and the advice to "go down one" has run out of road.
| Lever | How far it goes at CSI | What it costs per candle | What the customer notices |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Wick size, within Eco | Exactly one downward step: Thick (C2) → Thin (C1) | ₹9.44 → ₹5.90, a ₹3.54 saving | Nothing, if the pool still reaches the wall. This is the clean win. |
| 2 · Wick construction | Cotton braided ₹12 · Eco loose by the metre 5 m ₹413 · wooden ₹59 to ₹41.30 | ₹5.90 to ₹59 depending on choice and pack | Wooden wicks change the look and sound of the candle — that is a product decision, not a tuning step. |
| 3 · Jar diameter | 80 containers listed; a narrower jar asks less of the wick | Varies — the 6 cm Shot Glass Jar is ₹48 at six per pack | A different product. Honest, but it is a relaunch, not a fix. |
| 4 · Fill weight | Any figure up to the vessel's stated capacity | Saves wax and oil proportionally | Reducing fill reduces hours too — it lowers cost, not rate. Treat it as a pricing change the customer may notice. |
The ordering is deliberate. Lever 1 is nearly free and invisible to the customer, so try it first and try it properly — a full tray, cured the same number of days, measured with the same instrument. Lever 2 gives you two or three more candidates and costs very little to stock, because Eco and cotton braided wicks are flat-priced per piece from the 10-pack to the 1,000-pack. Levers 3 and 4 both change the product the customer receives, which makes them legitimate decisions but bad experiments: change them and you are no longer answering the wick question.
What to buy
Three lines cover the whole investigation: the instrument, the one real downward step, and a third construction so the bracket is not a straight line. Every per-candle figure below is for the 130 g build at 8% costed above.

A last word on what to do with the figure once you have it. The temptation is to put it straight on a label. Resist that for now: a rate measured on one unit over one session is a working number for your own decisions, not a published claim. Turning measurements into something a customer can rely on needs more than one unit, a full-life burn, and a conservative figure or a range — which is a whole cluster of its own later in this series. For today, the number's job is simply to tell you whether to re-pour.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The commercially convenient advice here would be to leave a fast-burning candle alone — faster candles consume more wax, more fragrance and more wicks, and every one of those is something we sell. We are telling you to weigh it instead, because a ₹5.90 wick that gives your customer a candle they talk about is worth more to us than a ₹9.44 wick that quietly ends the relationship.
Every price and pack size on this page comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing always takes precedence. No CSI wax, wick or jar page publishes a burn time, a burn rate or hours per gram; the 8.4 and 5.6 g/hr figures are illustrative readings from a maker's own session, included only to show the arithmetic, and your own figures will differ with your wax, load, jar, trim and room. Specifications are quoted only where a page states them, and where a listing contradicts itself — as the Shot Glass Jar's pack count does — we say so and price the less favourable reading.

Figures verified September 2026: Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) 10 ₹59, 20 ₹118, 50 ₹295, 100 ₹590, 500 ₹2,950, 1,000 ₹5,900 (flat ₹5.90 each); Thick (C2) 20 ₹188.80, 50 ₹472, 100 ₹944, 500 ₹4,720, 1,000 ₹9,440 (flat ₹9.44 each), the Thick (C2) 10-pack currently sold out. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made 10 ₹120 to 1,000 ₹12,000 (flat ₹12 each). Eco Candle Wicks Loose 5 m ₹413, 10 m ₹708. Performance Wooden Wicks (Imported) 10 ₹590, 50 ₹2,360, 100 ₹4,130 (₹59 / ₹47.20 / ₹41.30 each). Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs ₹706.82. Candle Making Weighing Scale ₹354. Candle Wick Cutter ₹177; Candle Wick Trimmer ₹588.82. Eco Soy CSI 400 1 kg ₹399. Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil 100 gm ₹390 (₹3.90/g). Shot Glass Jar 130 gram ₹288 per pack. Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram pack of 5 ₹159.30 (₹31.86 each). Assumptions stated: load is calculated as a percentage of the finished candle, so a 130 g candle at 8% is 119.6 g wax + 10.4 g oil; material per candle = ₹47.72 wax + ₹40.56 oil + ₹5.90 wick + ₹48 jar = ₹142.18, or ₹148.28 on a ₹12 cotton braided wick. The Shot Glass Jar listing conflicts with itself — the title says "Pack of 6" and the body says "pack of five" — so at five per pack the jar is ₹57.60 and the candle ₹151.78; check the listing before ordering. The 8.4 g/hr and 5.6 g/hr rates are illustrative readings from one maker's own session, not CSI data; hours are 119.6 ÷ rate (14.24 and 21.36, shown as 14.2 and 21.4). No CSI page publishes a burn time, burn rate or hours per gram for any product or combination, and none is estimated here. Stated specifications quoted verbatim: Eco Soy CSI 400 "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly" and no stated maximum fragrance load; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cure "minimum of 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks" before burn testing; Cotton Braided Wicks "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"; Eco Candle Wicks Loose "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters"; Shot Glass Jar "Fill Capacity - 130gram", "Height - 8cm", "Diameter - 6cm". No CSI page states a wick diameter for C1 or C2. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
