My Candle Costs ₹140 in Direct Raw Materials but I Also Use Labels, Lids, Boxes and Inserts — How Do I Calculate the True Finished-Product Cost?
Share
Is the lid a separate line in my cost? Usually not. On this store a lid is sold attached to a vessel, not on its own: the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar is ₹212.40 at the 500 gm size including its dome lid, and the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid is ₹94.40 a piece with the lid on it. If your ₹140.00 already counted the vessel, the lid is already in it. Adding a lid line again is the most common double count in a finished-goods bill.
Why will you not tell me what a label or a box costs? Because your label is your artwork at your print run, and a number invented here would travel straight into your selling price. What this page can do is fix the arithmetic around it: your catalogue total is ₹143.33, and every ₹10.00 your own costs add is another 7.14% on top of your ₹140.00.
How much does finishing actually add to ₹140.00? On the two lines a catalogue can price, ₹3.33, or 2.38%. That is small, and it is meant to be — it is the part of the bill nobody argues about. The uplift you cannot see from here is your tier three, which on most Indian D2C candles is larger than both of these lines together.
Three tiers, and which of your lines sits where
Your question contains the whole problem in one sentence. You have a solid figure — ₹140.00 in direct raw materials — and a list of things that are obviously costs but that no supplier price list answers: labels, lids, boxes, inserts. The instinct is to find a number for each and add them up. The better move is to sort them first, because two of those four are not what you think they are.
Sort every line into three tiers. Tier one is direct raw materials: what physically becomes the candle. Wax, fragrance oil, the vessel, the wick. Your ₹140.00 is this tier, and this page uses it exactly as you wrote it. Tier two is finishing a catalogue can price: things a supplier stocks as a product with a live price and a countable unit. Tier three is everything else: your printed label, your box, your insert, your ribbon, the courier that takes the finished candle to your customer, the gateway that takes its cut, your packing time, your electricity.
The reason this sort matters is not tidiness. It is that tiers one and two can be checked by anyone with the product links, and tier three cannot be checked by anybody except you. Mixing them produces a number that looks authoritative and is partly invented, which is the single most expensive habit in small-batch candle costing. Keep the two halves visible on the same sheet and the sheet stays honest even when the figures change.
| You listed | Tier | What it actually is | Figure on this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labels | Three | Your artwork at your print run. The cost per label moves by a multiple between a 100-run and a 5,000-run. | Blank — your figure |
| Lids | One, usually | On this store a lid arrives attached to a vessel, so it is inside the vessel price you already counted. | Already in your ₹140.00 |
| Boxes | Three | Sized to your vessel. The size decides the price, and the vessel decides the size. | Blank — your figure |
| Inserts and void fill | Three | Decided by the box above it. Cost it after the box, never before. | Blank — your figure |
| Candle care sticker | Two | A live catalogue product with a countable unit price. | ₹0.83 |
| Wick sticker | Two | A live catalogue product with a countable unit price. | ₹2.50 |
The lid line, and the double count hiding in it
Look at how lids are actually sold. The Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid is ₹212.40 at the 500 gm size and ₹250.00 at the 700 gm size — a step of ₹37.60 between them — and the dome lid is in both prices. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid works out at ₹94.40 a piece in the 10 pack, lid included. That is how vessels are listed on this store, and it is why the lid is nearly always tier one rather than a line of its own.
So the question to ask yourself is not what a lid costs. It is what is inside your ₹140.00. If that figure was built from a lidded vessel, adding a lid row underneath it charges the same piece of metal or glass twice, and the error compounds every time you scale the sheet. If your ₹140.00 was built from a bare jar and you genuinely buy a lid separately, then it is your own line and it goes in tier three as a blank, because a standalone lid is not something you can price from this catalogue.
The finishing lines a catalogue can actually price
A candle care sticker is the safety and care roundel that goes on the base or the lid. CSI sells it as a roll: ₹413.00 for 500 stickers at 1 inch, which is ₹0.83 a candle, and ₹699.00 for 1,000 stickers at 1.5 inch, which is ₹0.70. The larger roll is ₹0.13 a sticker less, or ₹127.00 across a thousand candles. Read that honestly before you switch: the two rolls are different sticker sizes, 1 inch against 1.5 inch, so it is not a like-for-like swap. Choose the diameter your base can take, then let the rate follow.
A wick sticker is the adhesive disc that holds the wick tab to the base of the vessel. CSI sells a sheet of 40 for ₹100.00, which is ₹2.50 a candle, and a larger 2 mm version 40 for ₹249.00, which is ₹6.23 — ₹3.73 more a candle. Whether that step is worth paying is a wide-vessel question rather than a costing one: a bigger disc holds a heavier tab against a wider base. Test it in your own jar before you decide, because at ₹147.05 against ₹143.33 the difference is real money at volume and nothing at all on one candle.
| Line | Pack | Pack price | Per candle | On 100 candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Candle care sticker, 1 inch | 500 stickers | ₹413.00 | ₹0.83 | ₹82.60 |
| Candle care sticker, 1.5 inch | 1,000 stickers | ₹699.00 | ₹0.70 | ₹69.90 |
| Wick sticker | 40 stickers | ₹100.00 | ₹2.50 | ₹250.00 |
| Large wick sticker, 2 mm | 40 stickers | ₹249.00 | ₹6.23 | ₹622.50 |
| Tier two as costed on this page | care sticker + wick sticker | — | ₹3.33 | ₹332.60 |
Two more finishing items on this store are real costs and genuinely cannot be reduced to a per-candle figure here. Isopropyl Alcohol Spray is ₹383.00 for 150 ML and ₹520.00 for 1 Litre, and it is what you wipe a jar with before a label goes on; how many jars a bottle wipes is not published, so it is a batch cost you divide by your own count rather than a unit cost anyone can hand you. Candle Liquid Shiner is ₹1,150.00 for 500 ML and behaves the same way. Put both in your sheet as batch costs with your own divisor written beside them, and they stop being invisible without becoming invented.
The rows that stay blank, and why that is the useful part
Here is the worksheet for tier three. Every row is named, none of them has a figure, and that is deliberate. A supplier can tell you what a wick sticker costs because it sells wick stickers. It cannot tell you what your label costs, because your label is your artwork, your paper, your finish and your print run, and the per-unit price of the same design moves by a multiple between a hundred and five thousand copies. The same is true of the box, which is sized to your vessel, and the insert, which is sized to the box.
| Line | Why it is blank | Your figure |
|---|---|---|
| Printed label or sticker for the front | Depends on your artwork, print run and printer — a 100-label run and a 5,000-label run are not the same rupee | — |
| Outer box or mailer | Sized to your vessel, and the size decides the price | — |
| Insert, void fill, tissue or crinkle paper | Depends on the box you chose above | — |
| Ribbon, tag, wax seal, gift wrap | A design decision with a different cost per SKU | — |
| Courier to your own customer | CSI publishes rates for delivering to you, not for your outbound parcels | — |
| Payment gateway or marketplace fee | A percentage of your selling price, which this page does not set | — |
| Packing labour, per candle | Yours, and the line most makers leave at zero | — |
| Electricity, melting time, rent, storage | Not a per-candle cost until you divide it by a real month of output | — |
| Breakage in transit, as an allowance | An assumption you set after a month of shipping, not a figure to borrow | — |
| Subtotal — your own costs | Add your rows above | — |
| Materials and finishing from the catalogue | Your ₹140.00 plus the two CSI lines | ₹143.33 |
What you can do without a single invented number is size the gap. Your catalogue total is ₹143.33. Every ₹10.00 of tier three adds 7.14% on top of your original ₹140.00. So when you finally collect your label quote, your box quote and your courier average, you will not need this page to tell you whether the answer is serious — you divide your tier three total by ₹143.33 and read the percentage. On most Indian D2C candles sold in a printed box with a ribbon, that percentage surprises people the first time they calculate it properly.
Building the sheet, line by line
One refinement worth adding once the sheet works. Tier three splits naturally into costs that scale with every candle (label, box, insert, ribbon, courier) and costs that scale with a batch or a month (electricity, rent, your packing hours). Keep them in two groups inside tier three rather than one list. The per-candle group belongs in your unit cost. The per-month group belongs in a monthly figure you divide by real output, and dividing it by a hopeful output rather than a real one is the second most common costing error after the lid.
Two totals, and the one you should quote
The finished sheet has two totals and they do different jobs. Catalogue materials and finishing: ₹143.33. Every rupee of it is checkable — your ₹140.00 against your own invoices, and ₹3.33 against two live product pages. This is the number you can put in front of a co-founder, an accountant or a wholesale buyer and defend line by line. Your own costs: your figure. Only you can produce it, and it deserves the same discipline as the first half — dated quotes, a pack size, a per-unit rate written down.
| Half | Contains | Per candle | Per 100 | Who can check it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct raw materials | Wax, fragrance, vessel, wick | ₹140.00 | ₹14,000.00 | You, against your invoices |
| Finishing from the catalogue | Care sticker ₹0.83 + wick sticker ₹2.50 | ₹3.33 | ₹332.60 | Anyone, from the product pages |
| Catalogue subtotal | The two rows above | ₹143.33 | ₹14,332.60 | Fully checkable |
| Your own costs | Label, box, insert, ribbon, courier, fees, labour, power | — | — | Only you |
| Finished-product cost | Both halves added | ₹143.33 + your figure | — | You, with half of it evidenced |
When you quote a cost to somebody else — a stockist asking for your wholesale price, a partner asking whether a hamper is viable — quote the sum, then say what is in it. “₹143.33 of materials and finishing, plus our own packaging and dispatch” is a sentence that survives scrutiny. “About one fifty” does not, and it is how makers end up agreeing a wholesale price that loses money on every unit of a large order.
A last discipline: stamp the sheet. Write the pricing month on it — these CSI figures are September 2026 — write the pack size each rate came from, and write the date you last checked. A cost sheet with no date is a cost sheet nobody dares update, and the linked product pages are always authoritative if a price has moved since.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells wax, fragrance oil, vessels, wicks and a small number of finishing items, and this page still tells you that most of what turns your candle into a finished product is not ours to price. It also tells you that the lid you were about to add as a cost line is very probably already inside the vessel price you counted, which removes a line from your sheet rather than adding one, and that the two finishing lines we do sell come to ₹3.33 a candle — small enough that no costing decision should turn on them.
Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. The ₹140.00 is your own figure, used exactly as given and never presented as a CSI price; this page does not know how it splits between wax, fragrance, vessel and wick, which is why the first step asks you to write that split down. The two candle care sticker rolls are different sticker diameters, 1 inch and 1.5 inch, so the rate difference between them is not a like-for-like comparison. Shipping figures are the published flat rate bands by weight as at September 2026, quoted only for the product whose stored packed weight is named. Labels, boxes, inserts, ribbon, outbound courier, gateway fees, packing labour, electricity and rent are left blank throughout, and no typical figure is offered for any of them.

Figures verified September 2026 (CSI live pricing). The reader’s figure, used exactly as given in the question and never presented as a CSI price: ₹140.00 of direct raw materials per candle. This page does not know how that figure splits between wax, fragrance, vessel and wick, and says so. Live CSI prices, September 2026, taxes included. Finishing: Candle Care Stickers Roll 500 at 1 inch ₹413.00 (₹0.83 each), 1,000 at 1.5 inch ₹699.00 (₹0.70 each) — the two rolls are different sticker diameters and are not a like-for-like comparison; Candle Wick Stickers 40 for ₹100.00 (₹2.50 each); Large Candle Wick Stickers 40 for ₹249.00 (₹6.23 each); Isopropyl Alcohol Spray 150 ML ₹383.00, 1 Litre ₹520.00; Candle Liquid Shiner 500 ML ₹1,150.00 — neither of the last two publishes a coverage figure, so neither is reduced to a per-candle rate here. Vessels with lids included: Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid 500 gm ₹212.40, 700 gm ₹250.00; Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid 10 for ₹944.00 (₹94.40 each). Wick: Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) ₹5.90 each at the 100 pack. Shipping: the 500 gm Apothecary jar stores a packed weight of 1 kg; the cheapest published band covering that weight is ₹110.00 on Standard Shipping and ten of them consolidated into one 10 kg parcel bill at ₹800.00, both as published in September 2026. No fill capacity is claimed for any vessel on this page and no candle is stated to fit any jar. Left blank on purpose and never estimated: printed labels, outer boxes, mailers, inserts and void fill, ribbon and tags, courier to your own customer, payment gateway and marketplace fees, packing labour, electricity, rent, storage and breakage allowances. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
