My Candle Formula Is Profitable at 100 Units but Margins Change at 1,000 Units — How Should I Recalculate Raw-Material, Labour and Packaging Costs When Scaling?
Share
Do raw materials get cheaper at 1,000 units? Very little at CSI's listed prices. In the example the materials go from ₹262.28 to ₹262.11. The only moves are the oil's 500 g-to-1 kg step and, below 50 jars, the jar pack. Wax, wicks and jars are otherwise flat per unit.
Then why do my margins change? Because the non-material lines move, in both directions. In the example, labour and packaging (example figures) fall by ₹33.50 a candle, while a melter adds ₹1.77. If the 1,000 sell at a wholesale ₹399 instead of ₹799 retail, gross margin drops from 61.2% to 22.3%.
Why does my small-run cost per candle look higher than it is? Usually because you divided the purchase bill by the candles made. Pack sizes leave remainders, such as spare wax and stickers, which are stock carried forward, not cost. Cost the candle on what it consumes. See consumption vs purchase.
Re-price the materials at the new packs
Take the candle apart and re-price each input at the pack size each volume would buy. Our example is a premium candle: an illustrative 180 g fill in the 200 ml Salsa jar (the jar's fill weight is not published, so weigh a filled jar of your own wax), at an 8% load. That is 14.4 g of oil and 165.6 g of wax, with a 4% allowance on both for pour loss and tests (a working assumption; plan 3–5%). The wax is Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. No fragrance ceiling for it is quoted in our data, so 8% here is a working load within the 6–10% range commonly used for tests. Check the wax's product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum.
| Material | At 100 units | Bought as | At 1,000 units | Bought as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Bean (14.98 g) | ₹114.68 | 1 kg + 500 g (₹11,486.00) | ₹114.51 | 15 × 1 kg (₹1,14,690.00) |
| CSI 468 wax (172.22 g) | ₹109.71 | 10 kg + 2 × 5 kg (₹12,740.00) | ₹109.71 | 18 × 10 kg (₹1,14,660.00) |
| Salsa jar + lug cap | ₹29.50 | 2 × 50 (₹2,950.00) | ₹29.50 | 10 × 100 (₹29,500.00) |
| Eco Thin C1 wick | ₹5.90 | 1 × 100 (₹590.00) | ₹5.90 | 1 × 1,000 (₹5,900.00) |
| Wick sticker | ₹2.50 | 3 × 40 (₹300.00) | ₹2.50 | 25 × 40 (₹2,500.00) |
| Materials per candle | ₹262.28 | — | ₹262.11 | — |
The materials move by ₹0.17 per candle, all of it in the oil. At 100 units the 1.5 kg of Vanilla Bean comes as a 1 kg plus a 500 g, at ₹7.66 a gram on average. At 1,000 it comes as kilos at ₹7.65. Everything else is flat. CSI 468 costs ₹637.00 a kilo from 5 kg upward (a 2.0% step from ₹650.00 at 1 kg, which both volumes clear). The Salsa jar is ₹29.50 at both 50 and 100 per pack, and wicks are ₹5.90 at every pack size. This is typical of CSI's listed catalogue: price steps are at the small end, and above them prices are linear. Volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp, and no discount figure is published, so do not pencil one into your 1,000-unit costing until you have it in writing.
Consumption cost, not purchase cost
Here is the most common reason a maker thinks their small-run candle costs more than it does. They divide the purchase bill by the candles made. At 100 units the example's purchases total ₹28,066.00, which is ₹280.66 a candle. At 1,000 they total ₹2,67,250.00, or ₹267.25 a candle. That looks like a ₹13.41 saving from scale. It is not.
| 100 units | 1,000 units | |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase bill | ₹28,066.00 | ₹2,67,250.00 |
| Purchase ÷ units | ₹280.66 | ₹267.25 |
| Wax bought vs used | 20.00 kg vs 17.22 kg | 180.00 kg vs 172.22 kg |
| Oil bought vs used | 1,500.00 g vs 1,497.60 g | 15,000.00 g vs 14,976.00 g |
| Stickers bought vs used | 120 vs 100 | 1,000 vs 1,000 |
| Consumption cost per candle | ₹262.28 | ₹262.11 |
The gap is remainders. At 100 units, 2.78 kg of wax and 20 stickers are left over, which is stock for the next run, not a cost of this one. Scale shrinks remainders as a share of the purchase, which makes it look as if the candle got cheaper. The honest per-candle cost is what each candle consumes, and on that basis the two runs differ by a few paise. Keep the remainders on your stock sheet, as I'm Running Out of One Raw Material While Having Months of Another — How Do I Synchronise Wax, Fragrance, Wick and Jar Purchasing with Actual Production? describes, and never let them inflate a quote.
The lines that really move
If materials hold still, the margin moves through everything around them. None of these lines are CSI prices. CSI does not list labels, boxes, labour or courier, and we will not guess them for you. Below they are clearly labelled examples to show the method. Replace every one with your own figures.
| Line | Source | 100 units | 1,000 units | Why it moves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Bean oil (14.98 g) | CSI | ₹114.68 | ₹114.51 | 1 kg + 500 g → 1 kg packs |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 (172.22 g) | CSI | ₹109.71 | ₹109.71 | ₹637.00/kg from 5 kg at both volumes |
| 200 ml Salsa jar with golden lug cap | CSI | ₹29.50 | ₹29.50 | ₹29.50 at 50 or 100 per pack |
| Eco Thin C1 wick | CSI | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 at every pack |
| Wick sticker | CSI | ₹2.50 | ₹2.50 | 40 for ₹100.00 |
| Materials subtotal | ₹262.28 | ₹262.11 | Moves ₹0.17 | |
| Labour (example ₹150/hour) | Example | ₹18.00 | ₹13.50 | 12 h per 100 → 90 h per 1,000 (example) |
| Label (example) | Example | ₹10.00 | ₹4.00 | Printer's price at each run length |
| Box (example) | Example | ₹45.00 | ₹22.00 | Printer's price at each run length |
| Tissue sheet | CSI | ₹6.50 | ₹6.50 | ₹650.00 / 100 sheets |
| Melter spread (example) | Example | ₹0.00 | ₹1.77 | 10 kg melter ₹21,240.00 over 12,000 candles |
| Total per candle | ₹341.78 | ₹309.88 | Moves ₹31.90 |
Labour usually falls per candle at scale, but less than makers hope. Melting, pouring and wicking get faster in larger batches, while labelling, quality checks and packing stay roughly per unit. In the example, 100 candles take 12 hours and 1,000 take 90 hours at an example ₹150 an hour. Time a real batch before you believe any figure, including ours. If scaling means hiring help, add it here at the helper's actual rate, not at the value you put on your own hour.
Printed packaging is where scale most often helps, because printers price by run length. The example label falls from ₹10.00 to ₹4.00 and the box from ₹45.00 to ₹22.00. Those are illustrations of a common pattern, not market prices. Ask two printers for quotes at both quantities. The one packaging line CSI does list, tissue at ₹6.50 a sheet, does not change with volume at all.
Equipment is the line that appears only at scale. Pouring 1,000 candles from a hob and a jug is slow. Many makers add a melter, such as the 10 kg Electric Wax Melter at ₹21,240.00. Spread over an example 12,000 candles (a year at 1,000 a month), it adds ₹1.77 a candle. CSI does not publish melter throughput, so size it on your own batch timing.
Margin at 100 and at 1,000
Now put the cost against the price, and use both measures correctly. Gross margin is (price − cost) ÷ price, the share of the selling price you keep. Markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost, how much you add on top of cost. They describe the same gap, and mixing them up is a classic pricing error.
| Scenario | Price | Cost per candle | Gross margin (on price) | Markup (on cost) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 units, retail | ₹799.00 | ₹341.78 | 57.2% | 133.8% |
| 1,000 units, retail | ₹799.00 | ₹309.88 | 61.2% | 157.8% |
| 1,000 units, wholesale (example ₹399) | ₹399.00 | ₹309.88 | 22.3% | 28.8% |
This is usually the answer to "my margins change at 1,000". Selling 1,000 units of one candle rarely happens at full retail price. It happens through stockists, corporate gifting or bulk orders, all at a lower price. The cost side improves by ₹31.90 with our example figures. The price side can fall by hundreds. Before you scale, decide what the 1,000 will sell for, and recompute margin at that price. Two final checks before you commit. First, test a batch at the new scale. A 10 kg melt behaves differently from a 1 kg pot, and one full-size test batch costs far less than 1,000 candles that need reworking. Second, re-run the costing with your own labour and packaging figures, not ours. The method is the useful part of this page. The example numbers only show the shape.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page shows that our own bigger packs barely change your material cost per candle at listed prices, which is not the usual message from a supplier, and it points to labour, packaging and selling price as the lines that decide your margin at scale.
Every oil, wax, jar, tissue and melter price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24–25 September 2026. The Eco wick and wick sticker prices come from the same pull. Per-candle figures, remainders and margins are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.
Labour hours and rate, label and box prices, the ₹399 wholesale price, the 12,000-candle equipment life and the 180 g fill are examples to replace with your own figures. For a materials quote at your volume, GST invoicing or documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
