My Candle Smells Strong at 10% Fragrance Load but the Wick Struggles — How Do I Determine Whether Reducing Fragrance or Increasing Wick Size Is the Better Solution?
Share
What are the signs the wick is struggling? In general practice: a small or drowning flame, flickering, soot on the jar, a carbon “mushroom” on the tip, or a pool that stops short of the glass. Note which ones you see — they point to different fixes.
Which fix is cheaper? With Cinnamon Vanilla at its 1 kg rate, cutting 10% to 8% saves ₹18.22 a 200 g candle. Sizing up from Eco Thin C1 to Thick C2 adds ₹3.54. Over a 200-candle order: ₹3,643.84 saved against ₹708.00 spent.
Can I just use two wicks? CSI does not list three-wick jars, and multi-wick layouts change the whole burn. Treat it as a separate formulation and burn-test it; ask on WhatsApp if you need help sourcing.
Name the struggle first
Before choosing a fix, write down exactly what the flame and pool do in the first three hours. The symptoms below are commonly described in candle-making practice. They are not CSI measurements, and no symptom proves a cause on its own — but they tell you which branch of the decision tree to test first.
| What you see | Commonly suggests | Test first |
|---|---|---|
| Small, low flame; pool stops short of the glass | Wick too small for the jar at this load | One wick size up at the same load |
| Flame drowns or nearly goes out in the pool | Wick too small, or a fuel it cannot draw well | Bigger wick and a lower load, side by side |
| Tall, flickering flame; soot on the glass | More fuel than the wick burns cleanly | Lower load on the same wick |
| Heavy carbon mushroom on the tip | Often linked with high loads or oversized wicks | Lower load first, then wick |
| Wet or beaded surface before lighting | Oil not held by the wax | The sweating grid before any wick change |
Notice that only the first two rows point straight at the wick. The last three point at the oil. That is why reducing is the first thing the decision tree tests, and it is also why a bigger wick can make things worse: a larger flame burning more oil-rich fuel can soot more, not less.
The three questions
Q1 — Is 10% at, over, or unknown against the wax's stated maximum?
If your wax is CSI 464, 10% is its stated maximum: you are on the fence, and a struggling wick is a sign to step back rather than build a bigger fire under it. If your wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% is well inside the stated 13%, so the answer is no and you move to Q2. For CSI 468 and other waxes without a published ceiling in our data, treat the answer as “unknown” until you have asked: check the product page or message CSI on WhatsApp. Reducing is the safer first test. Why a stated maximum is not a target is covered in My Soy Wax Supplier Says the Wax Can Hold 12% Fragrance Oil — Does That Mean I Should Actually Use 12% for the Strongest Hot Throw?.
Q2 — Does 8% or 9% on the same wick smell as strong, blind?
This is the question most makers skip. They see a strong 10% candle, assume the oil is doing the work, and reach for a bigger wick. But if a 9% or 8% candle on the same wick burns cleanly and scores the same in a blind test, the last one or two points were not adding scent — they were adding fuel. Reduce, and the struggle often disappears with it. I Reduced My Fragrance Load from 10% to 8% and the Candle Suddenly Burns Better — How Can Less Fragrance Sometimes Produce Better Overall Performance? explains why a lower load can burn better overall.
Q3 — Does 10% on one wick size up burn clean?
Only when 10% is clearly stronger in a blind test does the bigger wick earn a trial. Judge it strictly: a clean, steady flame, a pool that reaches the glass without overheating the jar, no soot, and a manageable mushroom. If the bigger wick passes, keep 10% with it and cost the change. If it fails, the combination is over what this wax and jar can burn well — reduce the load and re-test the wick at the new load.
The test grid
Pour all twelve candles on the same day from the same wax and oil lots, in the same jar type. Weigh each as a share of the finished 200 g (the base convention). Follow the wax maker's instructions for temperatures. Code the bases and keep the key away from whoever scores.
| Codes | Load | Wick | Oil + wax | Material cost | Flame / soot / pool at 2 h | Scent 1–5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1–A2 | 8% | Eco Thin C1 | 16 + 184 g | ₹269.18 | ||
| B1–B2 | 8% | Eco Thick C2 | 16 + 184 g | ₹272.72 | ||
| C1–C2 | 9% | Eco Thin C1 | 18 + 182 g | ₹276.99 | ||
| D1–D2 | 9% | Eco Thick C2 | 18 + 182 g | ₹280.53 | ||
| E1–E2 | 10% | Eco Thin C1 | 20 + 180 g | ₹284.80 | ||
| F1–F2 | 10% | Eco Thick C2 | 20 + 180 g | ₹288.34 |
What each fix costs
Here is each fix on one 200 g candle and on a 200-candle order, with Cinnamon Vanilla at its 1 kg rate (₹4.55 a gram) and CSI 468 at ₹650.00 a kilo. Material cost is oil, wax, wick and jar; it excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.
| Fix | Oil | Wick | Material per candle | Change vs current | 200 candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep 10%, Eco Thin C1 (current) | 20 g | Thin C1 | ₹284.80 | — | ₹56,959.20 |
| Keep 10%, wick up to Thick C2 | 20 g | Thick C2 | ₹288.34 | +₹3.54 | ₹57,667.20 |
| Reduce to 9%, keep Thin C1 | 18 g | Thin C1 | ₹276.99 | −₹9.11 | ₹55,397.28 |
| Reduce to 8%, keep Thin C1 | 16 g | Thin C1 | ₹269.18 | −₹18.22 | ₹53,835.36 |
Reducing to 8% saves ₹3,643.84 on the order; the bigger wick adds ₹708.00. The gap between the two routes is ₹4,351.84 on 200 candles. That is not a reason to reduce if the test says 10% is genuinely stronger and burns clean on the bigger wick — a customer who notices the difference is worth more than ₹21.76 a candle. It is a reason not to assume the bigger wick is the default answer.
The priced grid list
| Pack | Price | Per wick |
|---|---|---|
| Thin C1 × 10 | ₹59.00 | ₹5.90 |
| Thin C1 × 50 | ₹295.00 | ₹5.90 |
| Thin C1 × 100 | ₹590.00 | ₹5.90 |
| Thick C2 × 10 | ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 |
| Thick C2 × 20 | ₹188.80 | ₹9.44 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 |
| 100 g | ₹483.80 | ₹4.84 |
| 500 g | ₹2,301.00 | ₹4.60 |
| 1 kg | ₹4,554.80 | ₹4.55 |
| Item | Price | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Cinnamon Vanilla Fragrance Oil, 100 g × 2 | ₹967.60 | 200 g |
| Cinnamon Vanilla Fragrance Oil, 50 g | ₹271.40 | allowance + spare |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, 1 kg × 2 | ₹1,300.00 | 2,000 g |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, 500 g | ₹325.00 | 500 g |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, pack of 10 | ₹59.00 | 6 candles + 4 spare |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2, pack of 10 | ₹94.40 | 6 thick + 4 spare |
| White Matte Glass Jar, 3 packs of 5 | ₹1,062.00 | 12 jars + 3 spare |
| Total | ₹4,079.40 | 226.80 g oil and 2,293.20 g wax with a 5% allowance |
The 5% allowance is a working assumption for pour loss (plan 3–5%). CSI 468 is ₹650.00 a kilo and ₹325.00 for 500 g; no fragrance ceiling is published for it in our data, so if you plan to keep 10% after the grid, ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum first. If your jar already has a Wick Centering Device (₹118.00 for 5), use it on every grid candle so wick position is not a hidden variable.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell both of the things this page weighs up — oil and wicks. We still recommend testing the cheaper fix first, and say so with our own prices.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick, jar and tool prices are from this series' catalogue (Thin C1 and jars verified 10 September 2026; Thick C2 packs per the 25 September pull). Every rupee figure is arithmetic on those prices.
Flame, soot and pool symptoms are general candle-making practice, not CSI measurements. Wick sizes by jar diameter are not published in our data — burn-test. CSI 468 has no published fragrance ceiling in our data; Chunks (13%) and CSI 464 (10%) are the wax makers' stated maximums. For help, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
