Bottle vs Wax · Oud and Heavy Woods
A good oud bottle is a crowd: saffron-like spice, a rose, something sweet and resinous, a thread of smoke, and dry wood holding it together. In a hot pool the crowd thins from the top down, and by the second hour you may be left with the wood. Nothing is wrong with the oil. The heat is editing it.
5 facets
an oud-type fragrance is commonly built from several facets that leave a hot pool at different speeds · CSI publishes no composition for any oil
Quick answers — read this first
Why does my oud smell complex in the bottle but mostly woody when burned? Oud-type fragrances are accords — spice, rose, sweet amber, smoke and dry wood layered together. Heat spends the lighter facets first, so the heaviest woods dominate the later burn.

Is the oud oil weak? No. Woody does not mean weak; many ouds are loudest late in the burn. The question is whether the balance you sell is the one you smelled in the bottle.

Can I keep the other facets? Partly. Avoid overloading, check the wick is not running hot, judge at 1 hour rather than 3, and if needed add a lighter facet back in a blend. See keeping the facets.

How do I test it? Map five facets at six moments — bottle, cold, 15 minutes, 1, 2 and 3 hours. For two ouds in 200 g jars the set costs ₹1,752.00. See the facet map.
The short answer
Why: Oud-type fragrances are commonly built as layered accords. Lighter facets (bright spice, rose) leave a hot pool early; heavier ones (dry wood, smoke, resin) keep releasing. So the burn drifts towards wood.
What to do: Map the facets through a burn, fix wick and load first, judge at 1–2 hours, then decide whether to accept the drift, label for it, or blend a facet back.
An oud through one burn — which facets you tend to hear, and when Bottle Cold jar 15 min 1 h 2 h 3 h Bright spice Rose and floral Sweet amber Smoke and leather Dry wood Darker = more noticeable. Illustrative pattern commonly described for oud-type fragrances — not measured, not any specific CSI oil. Your facet map, filled in with your own oil in your own wax, replaces this grid.
An illustration of the pattern commonly described for oud-type fragrances, not a measurement of any CSI oil. In the bottle every facet is present. The cold jar is quieter all round. As the pool forms, bright spice and floral facets peak and then thin out; sweet amber and smoke build; dry wood grows steadily until it carries the late burn. The facet-map test on this page fills in the real grid for your oil, wax and wick.
Straight answer
My oud fragrance smells complex from the bottle but becomes mostly woody when burned — why can candle heat change the balance of a fragrance?
Because an oud fragrance is not one note but an accord: several facets layered to suggest oud — commonly a bright, saffron-like spice, a rose or floral heart, something sweet and resinous, a thread of smoke or leather, and dry wood underneath. In the bottle at room temperature you hear all of them at once. A hot melt pool releases them at different speeds. The lighter spice and floral facets evaporate early — during cure and in the first part of each burn — while the heaviest woods keep releasing for hours. So the burn drifts: by the second or third hour, the room is carried mostly by dry wood and smoke. Two things push it further. A high load gives the pool more heavy material, and a hot, deep pool from a large wick or long session releases the heavy end faster. The oil is not weak — ouds are often loudest late — but the balance has moved. Map it with the facet-map test (₹1,752.00 for two ouds), fix wick and load first, and then decide whether to accept the drift, label for it, or blend a facet back.
One line: heat edits an oud from the top down — the spice and rose leave first, the wood stays; map it before you change it.
Two ouds make a useful comparison: White Royal Oud 50 g at ₹420.00 and Dark Vanilla Oud 50 g at ₹320.00, whose name promises a sweet layer alongside the wood. Each fills two 200 g candles at 8% with 18 g to spare. We publish no throw data for either.

An oud is a crowd, not a note

When you smell 'oud' in a bottle, you are hearing an ensemble. A candle does not play every instrument for the same length of time.

In perfumery, 'oud' in a ready-made fragrance is commonly an accord: an impression built from several materials that together suggest the resinous, smoky, animalic wood of agarwood. Around it, oud fragrances usually add partners — spice, rose, amber, incense, leather. CSI's oud-family oils are sold under names that hint at those partners: White Royal Oud, Dark Vanilla Oud, Woody Oud, Midnight Bakhoor Royale, Sultan's Smoke. Their compositions are not published, so the facets below are general descriptions of the genre, not a breakdown of any product.

Facets commonly described in oud-type fragrances · general perfumery · not CSI measurements
The five facets and how each tends to behave in a candle
Facet Commonly described as Relative weight Tends to be heard Common reason it fades or grows
Bright spice Saffron-like, peppery, warm-sharp Lighter Bottle, cold jar, first minutes Evaporates early from a hot pool
Rose and floral Rosy, jammy, powdery Middle Bottle to about the first hour Mid-weight; thins as the burn goes on
Sweet amber Resinous, honeyed, vanillic Middle to heavy Builds with the pool Keeps releasing; sweetness reads stronger warm
Smoke and leather Incense, smoky, leathery Heavy Grows through the burn Heavy; also mixes with any wick smoke
Dry wood Cedar-like, dry, woody Heaviest Throughout, dominant late Slowest to leave; carries the late burn

The column that matters is relative weight. Lighter facets are what make an oud bottle smell layered and expensive on first sniff. Heavy facets are what give it depth and longevity. A bottle presents both together. A burning candle presents them in sequence. The cold vs hot character page explains the general mechanism; oud shows it more than most families because its lighter and heavier facets are so different in character.

Name the facets before you sniff
Write the five facet names across the top of a sheet before you start. When you sniff, ask 'which of these can I hear, and how strongly?' rather than 'how strong is it?'. Most makers can pick out spice, rose and wood with a little practice; the list gives your nose something to look for.

Why the burn drifts to wood

Three mechanisms, commonly described in candle making, combine to move an oud towards its woody base as it burns. None of them is a defect in the oil.

1
The top of the accord is spent firstLighter facets evaporate faster at any temperature, and much faster from a hot pool. Some leave during cure, more in the first minutes of each burn. After an hour, the pool holds proportionally more of the heavy end than the bottle did.
2
The heavy end keeps releasingHeavy woods and resins barely leave a cold surface but release steadily from a hot pool. They were always there; they now have the stage to themselves. That is why an oud candle can smell stronger at 2 hours than at 30 minutes and still feel less complex.
3
Your nose adapts to the loudest facetAfter a long exposure the nose tends to tune out what it has smelled most. In a room filled with wood, the fainter spice and rose drop out of attention even if a little is still there. Leave the room for five minutes and come back before each score. Fragrance fatigue vs weak throw covers this in depth.

Two process factors push the drift further. Load: more oil puts more heavy material in the pool, and heavy notes at a high load can feel dense rather than rich. Wick and session length: a large flame and a deep pool release the heavy end faster, and a long session gives it longer to dominate. A sooty wick also adds real smoke, which blurs into the smoke facet and makes the candle read harsher. Check both before touching the formula. The wick trade-off page covers the flame side.

Judging the wrong hour. A maker burns an oud for four hours, notices only wood, and rejects it as 'not like the bottle'. Most customers judge a candle in its first hour or two. Map the whole burn, then decide which hour represents your customer. An oud that is layered at 1 hour and woody at 3 may be exactly right.
The CSI principle
Decide which hour you are selling.
An oud candle is a different fragrance at 15 minutes, 1 hour and 3 hours. Map all three, choose the one that matches your label and your customer's burn, and formulate for that hour rather than for the bottle.

The facet-map test

Five facets, six moments, two ouds. One sheet each turns 'it went woody' into something you can act on.

The test uses White Royal Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 200 g White Matte Glass Jars and Eco Thin C1 wicks. Two ouds let you see whether a built-in sweet layer holds the middle of the burn better. CSI publishes no throw data for either; they are examples of the family.

2
Pour and cureWeigh to the finished-weight convention and follow the wax maker's temperature instructions on the Chunks product page — CSI has none on record for this wax. Cure all five together; score at a day-14 working checkpoint. Heavy woody oils are commonly given the longer checkpoint.
3
Cold mapControl first. Score each facet 0–3 on W-ref and D-ref at 5 cm.
4
Hot map across one burnBurn W-burn in an aired room. Score each facet at 15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours at 1 m, stepping outside for five minutes before each score. Note flame height, soot and pool depth. Repeat for D-burn on another day. Burn X once to learn the wax's own hot smell.
5
Repeat on a second dayBurn W-burn and D-burn again. The second burn tells you whether the drift starts earlier once the pool's lighter materials have been spent.
6
Read the gridCircle the hour at which each oil smells most like its bottle. If that hour is within your customer's usual session, accept the drift. If the spice and rose are gone by 30 minutes, move on to keeping the facets.

What oud costs inside a candle

Oud-family oils span a wide price range in CSI's catalogue. The table prices 16 g of each — a 200 g candle at 8% — at its 1 kg rate. Material cost adds Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹110.22), an Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. Price says nothing about which oud holds its facets best; CSI publishes no throw data for any of them.

The spread between the cheapest and dearest in-stock oud is ₹57.15 per candle. At the premium end, oil is roughly two-fifths of the material cost, so the load matters. If the facet map shows the late burn is dominated by wood at 8%, test 6%: 12 g of White Royal Oud at the 1 kg rate costs ₹97.24 instead of ₹129.65, and a lower load often lets lighter facets hold their share for longer. Stay within the wax's ceiling either way — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell the premium ouds, and 'buy a more complex oud' is the answer that suits us. The map may show that your current oud is layered for the first hour and simply woody after that — which is how many ouds behave. If your customers burn in one- or two-hour sessions, you may already have the right oil. Change it only if the map shows the facets you want are gone in the hour your customer smells.

Keeping the facets

If the map shows the lighter facets leave too early, work through these in order and re-map after each.

1
Clean the flameTrim, check for soot, and test the next wick size down if the pool is very deep. Wick smoke hides spice and rose and exaggerates the smoke facet.
2
Test the load downCompare 6% with 8%. Less heavy material in the pool can let the lighter facets hold their share for longer. Less fragrance, better performance explains why.
3
Label for the hourIf the first hour is layered and the rest is woody, say so: 'opens with spice and rose, settles into dry oud'. That is an honest description of a well-behaved oud, not an excuse.
4
Blend a facet backA small share of a rose, spice or amber oil can restore a facet the heat removes. Total load stays the same. For rose specifically, the rose-oud balance page covers whether to add rose or reduce oud; building a complex scent from several oils covers the wider method.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Our premium ouds are among the dearest oils we sell, and a disappointed oud customer is an easy upsell. This page asks you to map the oil you have, check the flame and test a lower load first, because a well-behaved oud commonly drifts to wood and that is not a fault.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, including the out-of-stock status of Regal Royal Oud; White Matte Glass Jar and Eco wick prices were verified on 10 September 2026 (Blog 760). Per-candle costs are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.

Oud accords, facet weights and the burn drift are general perfumery and candle-making knowledge, not CSI measurements; the diagram is illustrative. CSI publishes no throw or composition data for any oil, and naming an oil as an example is not a claim about its facets. For help reading your facet map, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my oud candle only smell woody?
Oud fragrances are commonly accords of spice, rose, amber, smoke and wood. The lighter facets leave a hot pool first, and the heavy woods keep releasing, so the later burn is carried by wood. A high load, a deep pool and wick smoke make the drift stronger.
How do I make an oud candle smell more like the perfume?
Map which facets fade and when. Then clean the flame, test a lower load, and judge the hour your customer will burn. If a facet is still missing, blend a small share of it back, keeping total load the same. I'm Blending Oud and Rose for a Candle but the Rose Disappears During Burning — Should I Increase Rose or Reduce the Stronger Oud Component? and My Candle Fragrance Is Strong but Feels One-Dimensional — How Do I Build a More Complex Scent Using Multiple Candle Fragrance Oils? cover blending.
What fragrance load should I use for oud candles?
CSI publishes no per-oil load data. Test 6% and 8% side by side within the wax's ceiling (13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464). A lower load often keeps an oud more balanced and costs less; the facet map tells you.
Which CSI oud fragrance oil has the best throw?
CSI publishes no throw data for any oil, so we do not rank them. The catalogue's oud-family oils run from Woody Oud (₹72.50 per 200 g candle at 1 kg) to White Royal Oud (₹129.65). Map two side by side in your wax.
Why does my candle smell smoky when burning?
Either the fragrance has a smoke or incense facet that grows as the burn goes on, or the wick is producing real soot. Check the flame: a tall, flickering flame, black marks on the glass and a carbon mushroom mean the wick. Trim and re-test.
How long should an oud candle cure?
CSI publishes no cure times. Heavy woody oils are commonly given longer, so use a labelled day-14 working checkpoint for the main verdict and treat day 7 as a preview. Do All Soy Candle Fragrances Need the Same Cure Time or Can Some Fragrance Compositions Reach Good Hot Throw Faster than Others? covers whether cure time varies by composition.
