Wax ageing · test it alone
If plain wax has picked up an odour, every candle you pour from it carries that odour. Test the wax on its own before you spend a rupee changing fragrance.
₹3,822.00
value of an example 6 kg left in an opened 10 kg CSI 468 bag — worth checking before you blame the oil
Quick answers — read this first
Should I test the wax before blaming the fragrance oil? Yes. If unscented wax smells off, every candle made from it inherits that odour regardless of the oil. Testing the wax alone is cheaper and answers the first question cleanly.

How do I test stored wax on its own? Compare flakes from your stored bag with a freshly opened bag in clean closed jars, then pour unscented candles from each and compare them coded, at room temperature and when burned.

Does CSI 468's 60-month shelf life cover this? The page states 60 months under cool, dry storage. It is a statement about the wax under those conditions, and says nothing about fragrance or about a bag kept open or warm.

What is an unscented control candle? A candle poured from the same wax bag, with no fragrance, stored alongside your scented stock. Smelled at every test point, it shows whether the wax itself is changing.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes. Test stored wax against a fresh bag, then keep an unscented control from each batch with your stock.
Key fact: CSI 464 and 468 state 60 months under cool, dry storage — a wax statement that assumes those conditions and covers no fragrance.
What to buy: A fresh 1 kg CSI 468 bag for comparison, a thermometer for the storage spot, and lidded jars for flake and control samples.
Example: wax value at stake versus the cost of checking10 kg CSI 468 bag₹6,3706 kg still in the bag₹3,8221 kg fresh bag to compare₹650
A ₹650.00 comparison bag tells you whether ₹3,822.00 of stored wax is still usable, in this example.
Straight answer
My Unscented Wax Develops an Off-Odour During Storage — Should I Test Wax Ageing Separately Before Blaming the Fragrance Oil?
Yes, test the wax separately first. An off-odour in plain, unscented wax is a wax question: if the wax has picked up or developed an odour, every candle you pour from it will carry that odour no matter which fragrance you use, and changing oil will not help. Compare flakes from your stored bag with a freshly opened bag in clean, closed jars; pour unscented candles from each and compare them coded; and record how and where the bag was kept. Then make one unscented control candle per production batch and store it with your stock. CSI 468's stated 60-month shelf life under cool, dry storage is a wax statement only, and it assumes those conditions.
One line: when plain wax smells off, test it alone against a fresh bag and keep an unscented control with every batch before touching the fragrance.

Why the wax comes first

A fragrance cannot fix a wax that smells wrong. It can only sit on top of it.

When the unscented wax itself smells off, the order of investigation is settled for you. The wax is in every candle. If it has picked up or developed an odour, that odour will be in your lavender candles, your oud candles and your citrus candles alike. Swapping oils, raising the load or changing supplier for fragrance will cost money and change nothing.

Testing the wax alone is also the cheapest test you can run. It needs no fragrance, no wick testing and no long cure. A fresh bag for comparison, a few clean jars and a little patience answer the first question cleanly. Only once the wax is cleared, or confirmed as the cause, is it worth looking at the fragrance at all.

What the 60-month wax shelf life does and does not say

CSI states a shelf life of 60 months for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, under cool, dry storage. Read that carefully. It is a statement about the wax, and it comes with a condition.

It does not say the wax will stay odour-free in an open bag on a hot top shelf, beside paint tins or next to the spice store. It does not say anything about how any fragrance behaves inside a finished candle. And it gives you no shelf life for the candle you make. A 60-month wax shelf life tells you nothing about your fragrance.

If your stored bag smells off and it has been kept cool, dry and sealed, that is worth reporting to CSI on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) with the product, bag details and dates. If it has not been kept that way, the first fix is your storage.

Other wax listings
CSI publishes the 60-month figure for CSI 464 and CSI 468. Do not assume it applies to other wax listings, where no shelf life is stated; ask if you need guidance.

How plain wax picks up an odour

These are general mechanisms, not CSI data, and none comes with a rate you can rely on. Your log decides which applies.

Absorbing smells from its surroundings

Wax flakes have a large surface area. An open or loosely closed bag stored near kerosene, solvents, cleaning products, paints, spices, damp cardboard or another fragrance can take on those smells. This is the most common cause in small workshops where everything shares one storeroom.

Heat

Repeated warming on a top shelf under a metal roof, near a window or close to a melter can change the wax and drive any odour forward. The room may feel fine while the shelf runs much hotter. Measure the shelf, not the room.

Moisture and damp

Monsoon humidity mainly affects cartons, labels and condensation on glass. A bag left open in a damp room, or a damp carton around it, can still contribute a stale or musty smell. Keep bags sealed and off the floor.

Contaminated scoops and containers

A scoop used for a fragranced wax, a beaker carrying another oil, or a container that once held something else can carry odour into a clean bag. Use dedicated, clean tools for unscented stock.

Testing stored wax on its own

1
Flake headspace check. Put about 50 g of flakes from the stored bag into one clean, dry, lidded jar and 50 g from a freshly opened bag into another identical jar. Close both for a suggested 1 hour, then open and sniff, coded so you do not know which is which.
2
Pour unscented candles. Make two unscented candles from each bag, same jar, same wick, same pour temperature. Melt the wax only in a proper melter with a separate thermometer, never on a stove or in a microwave.
3
Rest and compare cold. After a suggested 48 hours, compare the coded candles at room temperature, lids off for a fixed time, at a fixed distance.
4
Burn one of each. Burn one candle from each bag separately in the same closed room, supervised, and note any fatty, stale, smoky or sharp odour in the room.
5
Ask a second nose. Have someone else smell the coded pairs independently. Agreement between two people is far stronger evidence than one suspicious nose.

If the stored bag smells clearly different at the flake stage, you often have the answer before pouring a single candle. If the flakes seem alike but the burned candles differ, the odour shows only on heating, which is still a wax finding.

Reading a split result

Sometimes the comparison is not clean. The flakes smell alike, the cold candles smell alike, and only one burned candle seems slightly different. Treat that as unresolved, not as a verdict. Repeat the burn with the spare candles on another day, in the same room, with the coded labels reshuffled by someone else. A difference that appears twice is real; one that disappears was probably the room, the time of day or your nose.

Equally, a stored bag that smells different but only faintly may still be usable for some products and not others. A faint odour that a strong oud or coffee oil covers completely may be obvious under a delicate floral. If you decide to use the bag, pour a full-size test candle with your most delicate oil and store it through your normal hold period before committing production to it.

Where the bag sits matters more than how long

Makers often ask how many months a bag can stay open. There is no honest single answer, because the storage spot matters more than the calendar. A clipped bag in a cool, dry, odour-free cupboard and the same bag on a warm shelf beside cleaning products are two different experiments. Your log is how you learn which experiment you are running.

Keep a wax storage log and an unscented control

Once you know how much a storage spot matters, record it. A simple log, filled in when a bag is opened and at each check, turns guesswork into evidence.

Storage log
Wax storage-condition log (example entries; temperatures are your own readings)
Date Bag and lot Sealed? Shelf min/max (your reading) Flake odour 0–3 Unscented control odour 0–3 Note
Day 0 CSI 468, 10 kg, lot as labelled Opened, clipped Record 0 0 Opened for production
Day 30 Same Clipped Record 0 0 No change
Day 60 Same Clip loose Record 1 1 Moved beside cleaning products
Day 90 Same Clip loose Record 2 2 Fresh bag scores 0 — wax is the source

Alongside the log, pour one unscented control candle per production batch from the same bag, label it with the batch code and store it with that batch. At every test point, smell the control first. If the control develops an odour, the wax is changing. If the control stays clean while the scented candles change, the wax is cleared and the question moves to the fragrance and the wax-fragrance combination.

What is at stake, and what checking costs

Take an example: a 10 kg bag of CSI 468 bought at ₹6,370.00, opened, with 6 kg still in it.

Worked example
Value of stored wax against the cost of a fresh reference bag
Item Working Value
CSI 468 per gram, 10 kg pack ₹6,370.00 ÷ 10,000 = ₹0.637 ₹0.637 per g
6 kg remaining 6,000 × ₹0.637 = ₹3,822.00 ₹3,822.00
Fresh 1 kg bag for comparison Listed price ₹650.00
Wax for two unscented 200 g controls 400 × ₹0.65 = ₹260.00 ₹260.00

Spending ₹650.00 on a comparison bag to decide the fate of ₹3,822.00 of stored wax, in this example, is sound. And the comparison bag is not wasted: if the stored wax is cleared, the fresh bag simply goes into production.

Avoid. Buying 10 kg at a time if you store it in a shared, warm or open room. The per-kilogram saving on larger packs disappears the moment part of a bag picks up an odour you cannot sell.

Once the wax question is answered, the fragrance question becomes simple. CSI fragrance oil pages publish no shelf life or storage guidance, so if the wax is cleared and scented candles still change, ask on WhatsApp for the IFRA certificate, MSDS and storage guidance for that oil and lot, in writing, and test the combination in your own storage.

Argue against interest
Buy wax in amounts you can keep sealed, cool and dry.
A larger pack is cheaper per kilogram only if every gram stays usable. If your storeroom cannot keep an open 10 kg bag clean, two 5 kg bags may be the better buy.
If the wax smells wrong, every fragrance you pour into it will smell wrong too.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my unscented soy wax smell strange after storage?
Wax can absorb smells from its surroundings, change with repeated heat, or pick up odours from damp packaging or used tools. Compare flakes and unscented candles from your stored bag with a freshly opened bag to confirm, and record where and how the bag was kept.
How long does CSI soy wax last?
CSI states a shelf life of 60 months for CSI 464 and CSI 468 under cool, dry storage. That is a wax statement only. It does not apply to bags stored open or warm, and it gives no shelf life for fragrance or finished candles.
Should I make an unscented candle with every batch?
It is a useful habit. One unscented control from the same wax bag, stored with the batch, shows at every test point whether the wax is changing. If it stays clean while scented candles change, you can rule the wax out.
Can wax absorb odours from other materials?
It can, especially flakes and pearls with a lot of surface area in an open or loosely closed bag. Keep wax sealed, off the floor and away from solvents, paints, cleaning products, spices and other fragrances.
Is it safe to melt a small test sample of wax at home?
Use a proper wax melter and check the temperature with a separate thermometer. Never melt wax on a stove, in a microwave or over a flame, and never leave melting wax or a test burn unattended.
If my wax is fine, what should I test next?
Move to the fragrance and the wax-fragrance combination. Compare a retained oil sample with your opened bottle, remake candles fresh, and burn-test them against aged stock. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for written storage guidance for the oil lot.
