Not a wish list. The compulsory column, the useful column and the not-yet column, every line priced, each column totalled — plus three complete builds costed to ₹5,000, ₹15,000 and ₹30,000 with the monthly output of each.
₹2,020.60
the six essential lines, bought once, at the smallest sensible pack size · CSI live pricing, September 2026 · the linked product page is always authoritative
Quick answers — read this first
What raw materials do I actually need? Six: wax, wick, fragrance oil, container, a weighing scale and a thermometer. At the smallest sensible pack size that is ₹2,020.60 in total. Nothing else is compulsory on day one.

What can I start with? ₹4,893 buys a complete 45-candle-a-month build in 70g votives. ₹13,816.48 buys a 54-candle-a-month build in 200g jars with three scents. ₹28,848.40 buys roughly 105 candles a month across five scents with a wax melter.

How much of each for a first 50-candle run? At 200g per candle and an 8% load: 9.2 kg of wax, 800 g of fragrance oil, 50 wicks, 50 containers, 50 wick stickers — ₹176.57 of material per candle.

What should I not buy yet? Dye, mica, additives, moulds and a melter. That list totals ₹4,556.22 — more than twice the compulsory list — and none of it makes a candle better.
The short answer
Essential — ₹2,020.60: Eco Soy CSI 400 1 kg ₹399 · Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 50 for ₹295 · Citrus Lemon 100 g ₹300 · Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 g pack of 10 ₹318.60 · weighing scale ₹354 · pen thermometer ₹354.
Useful, month two — ₹1,806.00: pouring pitcher, stirring sticks, centering devices, wick stickers, care stickers, cordless mixer. Each removes a specific irritation. None of them changes what is in the jar.
Not yet — ₹4,556.22: dye, mica, Vybar, a mould, a melter, a hot air gun, a wicking needle, wooden wicks. Buy these when a customer has paid for them, not before.

Straight answer
What raw materials are actually required to start a candle business in India?
Six, and no more. Wax — Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399 per kilogram is the cheapest soy in the range. Wick — Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each. Fragrance oil — Citrus Lemon at ₹300 per 100g is the cheapest of the 92 oils in stock. Container — a Clear Glass Votive Jar 70g at ₹31.86. A weighing scale at ₹354 and a pen thermometer at ₹354, because fragrance load is a weight percentage and temperature decides throw and finish. Total at the smallest sensible pack sizes: ₹2,020.60. Everything else you have been told to buy — dye, mica, additives, moulds, a melter — belongs in a later column, and that later column costs ₹4,556.22, more than twice the compulsory one. If you want the phased version of this over three months, read the 90-day startup supply plan; if you want to know where to buy without making the standard sourcing errors, read where to buy raw materials for starting a candle business. This page is the requirements list and the budget.
One line: six materials, ₹2,020.60, and a three-week cure — that is the whole requirement; the rest of the catalogue is a decision you make later, with a customer's money.
The two cheapest lines on the compulsory list are the two most often left off it. Candle Making Weighing Scale ₹354 and Pen Thermometer For Candle Making ₹354 — ₹708 for the pair, and without them your recipe is not a recipe.

Essential, useful, not yet

Most starting lists are written by people selling you the list. This one is sorted by whether a candle can exist without the line.

A candle is wax, a wick, fragrance and something to hold it in. That is the entire physical product. Two instruments — a scale and a thermometer — are on the compulsory list not because they end up in the jar, but because without them you cannot repeat what you made, and a business that cannot repeat a batch is a hobby with an invoice book. Everything else in a candle supplies catalogue is an improvement to speed, appearance or comfort, and improvements are what you buy after the first fifty candles have sold, not before.

The three tables below are the whole argument. Every line is a live CSI variant price at the smallest pack size that makes sense for a first order, September 2026. Each column is totalled. Read the totals before you read the lines.

Column one · essential
Six lines. Without any one of them there is no product.
Material What it actually does Buy Price
Wax — Eco Soy CSI 400 The fuel and the carrier. It holds the fragrance in solution and feeds the flame at a controlled rate 1 kg ₹399.00
Wick — Eco Candle Wicks, Thin (C1) Sets the size of the melt pool, which is the surface the fragrance evaporates from. It is the burn rate control, not a string 50 wicks ₹295.00
Fragrance — Citrus Lemon The only reason most customers buy a candle rather than a light bulb. The cheapest of 92 oils in stock at ₹3.00/g 100 g ₹300.00
Container — Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 g Holds the melt pool, fixes the pool diameter and therefore the wick, and does most of your shelf presentation Pack of 10 ₹318.60
Weighing scale Turns "some fragrance" into 8.0%. Load is a weight percentage; without grams you have no recipe and no reorder 1 ₹354.00
Pen thermometer Tells you when to add fragrance and when to pour. Temperature drives throw and surface finish more than anything else you control 1 ₹354.00
Column total Bought once, at the smallest sensible pack size — ₹2,020.60

Two of those six are instruments rather than materials, which is why they get their own section further down. The other four are the candle. Note the shape of the numbers: the wax, wick, fragrance and glass together come to ₹1,312.60, and the two instruments come to ₹708. You are spending 35% of a starting order on things that never leave the workbench, and it is the best-spent 35% in this guide.

Column two · useful
Six lines that remove a specific irritation. None of them changes what is in the jar.
Item What it actually does Buy Price
Steel Pouring Pitcher, 600 ml A spout. Pouring from a saucepan is how you get wax on the outside of forty jars Large ₹708.00
Bamboo Stirring Sticks Disposable stirrers so you are not carrying one scent into the next batch on a steel spoon Pack of 5 ₹118.00
Wick Centering Device Holds the wick upright and central while the wax sets. An off-centre wick tunnels down one side of the jar Pack of 5 ₹118.00
Candle Wick Stickers Fixes the wick tab to the base so it does not lift and float when hot wax goes in 1 sheet, 40 ₹100.00
Candle Care Stickers Roll The base label that carries burn instructions. ₹0.83 a unit and it prevents most first-burn complaints 500, 1 inch ₹413.00
CSI Pro Mixer Gets you a genuinely even two-minute incorporation of fragrance without arm ache 1 ₹349.00
Column total Add in month two, once you know your scent range — ₹1,806.00

A bamboo stick and a steel spoon both stir wax. The difference is that the stick is thrown away, so batch four of Citrus Lemon does not carry a memory of batch three of Sandalwood. That is the character of this whole column — it is about consistency and finish, not about capability. You can produce a saleable candle without a single line of it, which is precisely why it is column two.

The order to buy column two in
Wick stickers and centering devices first, at ₹218 for both, because a lifted or off-centre wick ruins a candle that is otherwise correct. Then the pouring pitcher at ₹708 once you are pouring more than about ten jars in a sitting. Then care stickers when you have a customer to hand a candle to. The mixer last — it saves your forearm, not your recipe.

Your first 50-candle run, weighed out

A requirements list without quantities is a shopping mood. Here is the arithmetic, worked from the standard unit used throughout this page: a 200 g finished candle at an 8% fragrance load. Eight per cent is a working starting point, not a ceiling — the ceilings are stated by the wax manufacturer, and they differ by wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%. Those are formulation limits describing how much oil the wax will hold, not regulatory limits.

1
Split the 200 g200 g at 8% is 16 g of fragrance oil and 184 g of wax. Write both numbers down, not just the percentage, so the arithmetic is auditable when a batch goes wrong. If you pour at 10% the split becomes 20 g and 180 g.
2
Multiply by fiftyWax: 184 × 50 = 9,200 g, so 9.2 kg. Fragrance: 16 × 50 = 800 g. Wicks: 50, and buy 100 so you can test two sizes. Containers: 50. Wick stickers: 50, which is two sheets of 40.
3
Round up to real pack sizesYou cannot buy 9.2 kg. CSI 464 at 10 kg is ₹5,074 (₹507.40/kg), which covers the run with 800 g spare for test pours. Citrus Lemon at 1 kg is ₹2,832 (₹2.83/g) against ₹1,420 for 500 g — the kilo is the right buy only if you are certain of the scent. The run below assumes you are.
4
Cost the candle, not the orderMaterial consumed per candle: ₹93.36 of wax (184 g at ₹0.5074/g), ₹45.31 of fragrance (16 g at ₹2.832/g on 1 kg pricing), ₹29.50 of glass, ₹5.90 of wick and ₹2.50 of wick sticker. That is ₹176.57 per candle before labour, packaging, shipping in and payment fees. Turning that into a retail price is a separate exercise — the pricing guide is here.
The 50-candle order · 200 g candles at 8%
What you buy, what you use, and what is left over

Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil 800 g 1 kg ₹2,832.00

Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 50 100 ₹590.00
Candle Wick Stickers 50 2 sheets, 80 ₹200.00
Order total — — ₹10,171.00
Material consumed by the 50 — — ₹8,828.68
A note on the 200 g unit. 200 g is the arithmetic unit used on this page, not a promise about any particular jar. Fill weight varies with vessel shape and with the wax you use. Weigh water into your chosen container once, write the number on the shelf label, and every calculation on this page becomes yours rather than ours. The 70 g votive and the 150 g jar with golden lid carry their fill weight in the product title, which is the easiest way to keep the maths honest while you are learning.

The gap between the order total and the material consumed — ₹1,342.32 — is not waste. It is 800 g of wax, 50 spare wicks and 30 spare stickers, which is your test-pour budget for wick sizing. Budget it deliberately. The alternative is doing your wick test with jars you have already promised to a customer, which is how a first run turns into a first refund. If you have not sized a wick to a jar diameter before, the wick-by-diameter guide saves you the first two of those three test burns.

Three builds, costed exactly: ₹5,000 · ₹15,000 · ₹30,000

These are complete orders. Every line is a real CSI variant, every total is arithmetic rather than an estimate, and each build states what it can actually produce in a month. Each is deliberately left a little under its budget, because inbound shipping is real and a build that spends the last rupee on wax arrives without a delivery charge paid.

A
₹5,000 · 70 g votives · one scent
The proving build — ₹4,893.00
Small candles, one scent, no equipment beyond the two instruments. The purpose of this build is not profit, it is proof: proof that you can hit a temperature, hold a load, centre a wick and produce forty-five identical objects. Votives are the right format because the unit cost is low, the cure is fast to observe and a customer will buy three of them.

Material cost per candle: ₹82.76 — ₹25.70 wax, ₹16.80 fragrance, ₹31.86 glass, ₹5.90 wick, ₹2.50 sticker. ₹107 of the budget is left, and you should keep it.

B
₹15,000 · 200 g jars · three scents
The first-orders build — ₹13,816.48
This is the build that can take an order. Three scents means a customer has a choice, two vessel styles means you have a standard line and a premium line, and two wick gauges means you can size properly instead of hoping. It also carries the first four lines of the useful column, because at fifty jars a session the pouring pitcher stops being a luxury.

The 1 L mini melter at ₹2,360 earns its place here and nowhere earlier — at a hundred candles a month, double-boiling is the bottleneck, and holding wax at temperature is the difference between one pour session and three.

Fragrance and wax run out together by design — 1,700 g of oil is 106 candles' worth, 20 kg of wax is 108 — which is what a balanced order looks like. The 120 vessels are deliberately ahead of both, because glass is the line that arrives broken or back-ordered. ₹1,151.60 of the budget is unspent.
₹28,848.40 · ~106 candles a month · five scents Order this build on WhatsApp
What the three builds have in common. The scale and the thermometer appear in all three, at the same ₹708, and they are the only lines that do. Everything else scales with volume; those two are fixed. That is the clearest possible statement of what a requirement is. Notice too that no build contains dye, mica, additives or a mould — not even the ₹30,000 one. If you want the month-by-month version of this progression rather than three snapshots, the 90-day startup supply plan sequences it; and if you are still deciding what the total cost of entry looks like beyond materials, what it actually costs to start a candle business in India covers registration, packaging and shipping.
The CSI principle
A requirement is a line the candle cannot exist without. Everything else is a preference with an invoice attached.
Six lines and ₹2,020.60 is the requirement. ₹28,848.40 is a business decision about how many candles you want to make in October. Confusing the two is the single most common way a first order becomes a shelf full of unopened dye bottles.

The two purchases people skip — ₹354 and ₹354

They are the only two lines on the compulsory list that never end up in a jar, and they are the two that decide whether the jar is repeatable.

Every week someone messages us with a first order of wax, oil, wicks and glass, and no weighing scale and no pen thermometer. It is an understandable omission: they are not ingredients, they cost ₹708 for the pair, and a kitchen scale and a finger seem like they might do. They will not. Here is precisely why, in the two sentences that matter.

1
Fragrance load is a weight percentage, so the scale is not optionalEight per cent of a 200 g candle is 16 grams of oil and 184 grams of wax. Not 16 millilitres — grams. Fragrance oils differ in density, so the same volume of two different oils is two different loads, and a recipe recorded in spoons or caps cannot be reproduced by you next month or by anyone you hire. The wax side is worse: you cannot eyeball 184 g out of a 5 kg bag, and a 10% error on wax shifts your actual load from 8% to 8.8% without you knowing. A ₹354 scale converts an opinion into a number, and a number is the only thing a second batch can be built from.
2
Temperature drives throw and finish, so the thermometer is not optional eitherFragrance has to be added while the wax is hot enough to dissolve it rather than merely suspend it — Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same 80–90°C band. Too cool and the oil sits suspended and separates during cure. Too hot and light top notes flash off before the wax reaches the jar. Pour temperature separately decides your surface: too hot gives sinkholes and poor glass adhesion, too cool gives a lumpy top. A ₹354 pen thermometer is the only way to know which of those four things you are doing.
Argued against our own interest
We would rather sell you a ₹2,360 melter than a ₹354 thermometer — it is nearly seven times the order value. Buy the thermometer. A melter holds wax at a temperature you have chosen; it does not choose it for you, and it does not tell you what the wax is doing at the moment the fragrance goes in. The instrument is the prerequisite for the equipment, and in that order.

There is a stock note attached to the scale, and it is the sort of thing worth saying plainly: on the September 2026 pull, the Candle Making Weighing Scale was showing low stock at two units. Stock moves; the product page is always authoritative, and if it is out when you look, message us on WhatsApp rather than starting without one.

You are not buying a scale. You are buying the ability to make the same candle twice.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

Cure time is a requirement too — and it costs shelf space

The requirements list is not finished when the last box arrives. A soy container candle is not finished when it sets; it is finished when it has cured, and the working figure is fourteen to twenty-one days, with heavier woody, gourmand and oriental families still improving at the top of that range. Curing is the wax crystal structure settling and the fragrance distributing evenly through it. Nothing you buy speeds it up. It is a requirement in the same sense that wax is, and it is the one nobody costs.

Cost it now. Your first 50-candle run is ₹8,828.68 of material. For twenty-one days that money is a shelf of jars with lids on, in a closed carton, at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. It is not stock you can sell and it is not cash you can spend. If you pour weekly rather than monthly — thirteen candles a week is the same fifty — then three batches are curing simultaneously at all times, which is three cartons standing in a room in your house, permanently, from the third week onward. That is the real requirement: not shelving units, but the acceptance that a fixed amount of your working capital and a fixed corner of your home are always three weeks behind your production.

The practical consequence for Diwali. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. A candle that must be in a customer's hands for the festival has to be poured twenty-one days earlier at the latest, which puts the last safe pour date in the middle of October — and the raw materials have to be ordered, shipped and received before that. Working backwards from a festival is how experienced makers plan; working forwards from an order is how first-year makers end up shipping four-day-old candles that a customer describes as having no smell. If you are planning a festive run, how early to order fragrance for Diwali has the full timeline.

One more thing belongs in this section because it is a requirement of the same kind: test burns. Three test burns per jar diameter, roughly three hours each, before you sell into that vessel. That is nine hours of somebody watching a candle, and it has to happen after the cure, not during it. Budget the jars for it — the spare five in build A and the spare six in build B are exactly that budget — and budget the calendar for it. A wick that reaches the vessel wall in two to three hours with no soot is the target; the wick guide by diameter narrows the starting guess so you burn three candles rather than eight.

The not-to-buy list, priced

This is the section where we argue against our own order value, because it is where new candle businesses lose the most money. Every line below is a good product. We stock all of them, several of them are among our best-reviewed items, and none of them belongs in a first order. Priced at the smallest sensible pack size, the not-yet column comes to ₹4,556.22 — 2.3 times the entire compulsory list.

Eight lines to leave in the basket, and the trigger that unlocks each
Item Price Buy it when
Candle Dye Liquid, 15 ml ₹236.00 A customer or a stockist has specified a colour. Undyed soy sells perfectly well and never goes out of fashion; dye adds a variable to a recipe you have not yet stabilised
White Mica, 10 g ₹57.82 You are making a decorative or pillar range where the surface is the product. In a container candle it mostly settles
Vybar Additive, 50 g ₹156.00 You have a diagnosed problem an additive solves. Buying an additive before you have a fault is buying a solution to nothing
Silicone mould, cheapest ₹153.40 You have decided to sell shaped or pillar candles, which is a different product with a different wax. Moulds run to ₹3,540 at the top
Mini Electric Wax Melter, 1 L ₹2,360.00 Melting is your bottleneck, which is around the hundred-candles-a-month mark. Below that a double boiler and a thermometer do the same job slower
Hot Air Gun ₹531.00 You are correcting surface imperfections on candles you have already sold the concept of. It is a finishing tool, not a making tool
Premium Candle Wicking Needle ₹472.00 You are wicking moulds rather than containers. For jars, a wick sticker at ₹2.50 does the whole job
Performance Wooden Wicks, 10 ₹590.00 You have a premium line that justifies ₹59 a wick against ₹5.90. Wooden wicks are a different burn profile and need their own testing round
Column total ₹4,556.22 Versus ₹2,020.60 for everything that is actually required

And the line above all of them: the 20-litre Electric Wax Melter at ₹23,600. It is an excellent machine and it is the correct purchase for a maker running serious volume — the point at which it makes sense is discussed in scaling to 1,000 orders a month. It is also, on its own, eleven and a half times the whole essential list and nearly ₹10,000 more than the entire ₹15,000 build that can already make fifty-four candles. Buying it in month one does not make you a candle business; it makes you a person with an expensive melter and no customers.

What we would say if you asked us to spend your money for you: take the ₹4,556.22 you were going to spend on column three and buy fragrance with it instead. At ₹2.83 a gram for Citrus Lemon that is over 1.6 kg of oil — a hundred candles' worth of the ingredient customers actually buy. Scent range is what makes a stall or a shop page look like a business. A shelf of dye bottles is what makes it look like a hobby that got expensive. If you are unsure how much oil a range really needs, how much fragrance oil a candle business needs does that maths properly.

The one caveat, stated honestly: this ordering is for a container-candle business. If your plan is shaped candles, pillars or wax melts, the moulds move from column three to column one and the container line drops out entirely, and your wax changes with it — Soy Pillar Wax at ₹300 per 500 g rather than a container flake. The columns are a method, not a scripture. What does not change in either version is the six-line logic: buy what the product cannot exist without, then stop, then sell something, then buy the next thing. Before you place any of it, read the sourcing errors in where to buy raw materials for starting a candle business in India, because the cheapest way to waste a starting budget is not buying the wrong things — it is buying the right things badly.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a starting-materials page that cuts against us: the commercially convenient version of this article has thirty lines in the essential column and a melter in the first order. Ours has six lines and ₹2,020.60, and it spends a full section telling you to leave ₹4,556.22 of our catalogue in the basket. We do that because a maker who spends the whole starting budget on equipment runs out of money before the first fifty candles sell, and a maker who runs out of money does not reorder.

Every price, pack size and product name on this page is taken from live CSI stock on 10 September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing and availability always take precedence. Column totals, build totals, per-candle costs and the 50-candle quantities are arithmetic performed on those prices and shown in full so you can check them. Where a product was showing low stock at the pull — the weighing scale, at two units — we have said so rather than left you to find out at checkout. We stock 92 fragrance oils, and the fragrance-load ceilings quoted here are the wax manufacturers' stated formulation limits, not regulatory limits.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum I need to start a candle business in India?
Six lines: wax, wick, fragrance oil, container, a weighing scale and a thermometer. At the smallest sensible pack sizes that is ₹2,020.60 — Eco Soy CSI 400 1 kg at ₹399, Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 50 for ₹295, Citrus Lemon 100 g at ₹300, Clear Glass Votive Jars 70 g at ₹318.60 for ten, a weighing scale at ₹354 and a pen thermometer at ₹354. A working first order that produces forty-five saleable candles a month is ₹4,893.
How much wax and fragrance oil do I need for 50 candles?
At 200 g per candle and an 8% fragrance load, each candle is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. Fifty candles therefore need 9.2 kg of wax and 800 g of fragrance oil, plus 50 wicks, 50 containers and 50 wick stickers. In real pack sizes that is a 10 kg bag of CSI 464 at ₹5,074 and 1 kg of Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832, with 800 g of wax left over for test pours.
Do I really need a weighing scale and a thermometer?
Yes, and they are the two cheapest lines that make a recipe reproducible. Fragrance load is a weight percentage — 8% of 200 g is 16 grams, not 16 millilitres, and oils differ in density, so a volume measurement gives you a different load every time you change scent. Temperature decides throw and finish: fragrance has to go in hot enough to dissolve rather than suspend, and pour temperature sets your surface and glass adhesion. ₹354 each, ₹708 for the pair, and every build on this page contains both.
What should I not buy when starting out?
Dye, mica, additives, moulds, a melter, a heat gun, a wicking needle and wooden wicks. Priced at the smallest pack size those eight lines total ₹4,556.22, which is 2.3 times the entire compulsory list, and none of them makes a container candle better. Undyed soy sells. Buy each of them when a specific customer requirement or a specific bottleneck makes it necessary — not in the first order.
How long before I can sell my first candle?
Plan for three weeks after pouring. Soy container candles cure over 14 to 21 days, with woody, gourmand and oriental fragrance families still improving at the top of that range, and after the cure you still need three test burns of about three hours each per jar diameter. Cure is a requirement in the same way wax is: it needs shelf space, a closed carton at room temperature out of sunlight, and the acceptance that roughly ₹8,828 of material from a 50-candle run is standing still for those twenty-one days.
Is ₹5,000 enough to start a candle business?
It is enough to start making and selling, not enough to scale. ₹4,893 buys three kilos of Eco Soy CSI 400, 300 g of fragrance, fifty 70 g votive jars, fifty wicks, wick stickers, a scale and a thermometer — 45 candles a month at ₹82.76 of material each. One scent, one size. That is a real product line, and the profit from it funds the ₹15,000 build. Whether the economics work at your price point is a separate question, answered in is candle making actually profitable in India in 2026.

Build totals: A ₹4,893.00, B ₹13,816.48, C ₹28,848.40. Per-candle material costs and monthly output figures are arithmetic on those prices at a 200 g candle (184 g wax + 16 g oil) or a 70 g votive (64.4 g wax + 5.6 g oil) at an 8% load. Fragrance load ceilings are the wax manufacturers' stated maximums — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 flakes — and are formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring; CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same 80–90°C band. Cure times of 14–21 days reflect standard practice for soy container candles. The fragrance oils collection held 92 products at the pull. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Prices, stock and pack sizes change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
