Should Every New Candle Vessel Receive a Small Adhesion Test Before I Buy Thousands of Jars?
Share
How small can the test be? Gate 2 is 18 jars: six of your current jar, six new at room glass, six new at warm glass, from one melt.
Is it worth it? Sample check and screen for a Salsa: ₹3,460.45, 5.9% of a 2,000-jar order. The pilot candles are saleable if they pass.
What do I check before pouring? Empty weight, real fill weight, hot-pour limit, inside surface, shape and lid fit. See gate 1.
Yes — a small test per new vessel is the cheapest insurance you will buy
A wax, oil and wick that give clean glass in one jar can spot in another. Glass mass, wall thickness, base, shape, diameter, fill weight and the jar's surface are all commonly cited as changing how wax sets against the glass, and none of them is visible in a product photo. A vessel change also re-opens your wick — a different diameter or depth changes the melt pool — and your pour temperature, which has to stay inside both the wax page's range and the new jar's hot-pour limit. So the honest answer is yes: every new vessel gets a small adhesion test before a big jar order, and the test is part of approving the jar, not an optional extra.
The money makes it easy. For a new 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, all three gates on this page — a sample pack, an 18-jar adhesion screen and a 50-candle pilot — come to ₹11,859.09 in CSI materials, and most of that is the pilot — fifty candles you can sell if they pass. A 2,000-jar order of the same jar in its 100-packs is ₹59,000.00, and the materials for 2,000 finished candles are about ₹3,05,365.12. Gates 1 and 2 are 5.9% of the jar order; all three gates are 3.9% of the production run's materials. If the vessel turned out to spot in a fifth of candles — an example figure, not a rate for any jar — the materials in unsellable candles would be about ₹61,073.02.
The gates are short on purpose. Gate 1 is a receiving check on the smallest pack. Gate 2 is a side-by-side adhesion screen against the jar you already sell, from one melt. Gate 3 is a pilot batch in production conditions, including a burn test and, if you ship, a temperature cycle. A vessel that fails a gate costs you only what you have spent so far — which is why the order comes last.
| Earlier result | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Glass adhesion and wet-spot score | REPEAT | Glass, shape and fill all changed |
| Wick size and count | REPEAT | Diameter and depth change the melt pool; CSI publishes no wick size per jar |
| Pour temperature | CONFIRM | Must sit inside the wax page's range and the new jar's hot-pour limit |
| Glass preheat setting | REPEAT | Heavier or lighter glass takes heat differently — per-vessel settings |
| Top finish | CONFIRM | A different fill depth and shape can change how the top sets |
| Fragrance load and oil choice | KEEP | Unchanged formula — confirm hot throw in the new room-to-jar size if the fill changes much |
| Cure time | KEEP | Unchanged formula |
| Lid fit, label fit, packaging | NEW | The new vessel's own parts |
| Courier and storage behaviour | CONFIRM | A temperature cycle in the new jar if you ship |
Gate 1: the sample pack — what to check before pouring anything
Buy the smallest listed pack. For the Salsa that is five jars for ₹200.60; for CSI's Clear 150 g jar, ten for ₹944.00. Then check the things no product photo shows.
| Check | How | Why it matters for adhesion and production |
|---|---|---|
| Empty weight of each jar | Weigh on your scale; note lightest and heaviest | Glass mass is a heat-sink proxy; a wide spread means jars of one SKU may behave differently |
| Real fill weight | Pour one jar to your fill line with wax and weigh it | Brim volume is not fill weight — the Salsa's 200 ml and the Yankee's 130 ml are brim volumes |
| Hot-pour limit | From the jar page or the supplier — ask CSI on WhatsApp | Clear 150 g states up to 85°C; the Salsa's limit is not published |
| Inside surface | Torch at a low angle against black card; breath check | Residue or marks on arrival — clean-or-not becomes part of the jar's SOP |
| Shape | Note straight, curved or tapered walls and the base | Curves and heavy bases are where spots often start |
| Lid and label fit | Try your lid and label | A NEW line in the retest matrix |
Gate 2: the adhesion screen, against the jar you already sell
The example maker sells a candle in the Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml (illustrative 110 g fill) poured with Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Cucumber Green Tea at 8%, and wants to add a larger SKU in the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar (illustrative 160 g fill — weigh yours). Gate 2 pours three arms from one melt: six of the current jar as the control, six of the new jar into room-temperature glass, and six of the new jar into glass warmed to a measured, recorded temperature (an example arm is 35–45°C, never hotter than the wax or above the jar's limit). CSI 464's page lists an 80–90°C melt/pour working range; the Salsa's hot-pour limit is not published, so confirm it in gate 1 and pour every arm at one temperature that sits inside both.
Six a side, not three, because this result decides an order worth tens of thousands of rupees; it is still a screen. Why include the current jar at all? Because it tells you whether the day was normal. If your current jar spots too, the problem is the day — cleaning, room, cooling — not the new vessel, and you should repeat gate 2 before judging it.
| Pattern at 7 days | What it suggests | Next |
|---|---|---|
| Current clean, new-room clean | The new vessel holds this formula without help | Gate 3 |
| Current clean, new-room spotty, new-warm clean | The new vessel needs a preheat | Gate 3 with the preheat on its settings card; price the labour |
| Current clean, both new arms spotty | The vessel and this formula do not suit each other at these settings | Pour window or cooling tests in the new jar — or drop the vessel |
| Current spotty too | Not the vessel — today's conditions | Fix cleaning, room or cooling, then repeat gate 2 |
Gate 3: a pilot batch in production conditions
If gate 2 passes, pour 50 candles in the new vessel exactly as production will — the same cleaning, any preheat on its card, the same melter, tray layout, room and people. Keep them 30 days. Score every candle at 48 hours, 7 days and 30 days; burn-test a handful to start the wick qualification for the new vessel; and if you ship, put a few through a temperature cycle on your real courier route. A simple temperature-cycle test shows how. This is also the first time you see the spread across a real batch — outer and centre jars, first and last poured — which a screen of six cannot show.
What the gates cost against the order they protect
Material cost of one candle at production rates, in each candidate vessel: in the Salsa (160 g illustrative), CSI 464 at the 5 kg rate (₹507.40 a kilo), Cucumber Green Tea at the 1 kg rate (₹3.33 a gram), the Eco Thin C1 example wick at ₹5.90 and the jar at the 100-pack rate — ₹152.68; in the Clear 150 g jar (150 g page fill) at ₹94.40 a jar — ₹210.25. Both before labour, packaging, freight and GST.
| Candidate vessel | Gate 1 sample | Gate 2 screen (18 jars) | Gate 3 pilot (50) | All gates | 2,000 jars | Materials for 2,000 candles | All gates as % of run materials | Example materials at risk (20% spotted) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 ml Salsa | ₹200.60 | ₹3,259.85 | ₹8,398.64 | ₹11,859.09 | ₹59,000.00 | ₹3,05,365.12 | 3.9% | ₹61,073.02 |
| Clear 150 g | ₹944.00 | ₹4,462.86 | ₹11,219.83 | ₹16,626.69 | ₹1,88,800.00 | ₹4,20,504.80 | 4.0% | ₹84,100.96 |
The jar order prices use listed packs: 20 × pack of 100 for the Salsa, and 200 packs of ten for the Clear 150 g jar. At that scale, ask for a quote on WhatsApp — CSI publishes no volume discount, and the Clear 150 g pack of 20 is in limited stock. The pilot material for the Salsa uses 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg of wax and 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g of oil; leftovers carry into production. Whether to run a 50–100 candle pilot before a 100 kg purchase covers the wax side of the same decision.
The priced gate-2 kit
Priced with listed, in-stock CSI packs, using the CSI convention (oil = W × L) and a 5% pour-loss working allowance on each vessel's fill: 2,492.3 g of wax and 216.7 g of oil for the Salsa screen. Use your production wax and oil lots if you hold them.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml | 6 (control — the jar you sell) | 6 × single | ₹283.20 | Skip if you hold them |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar | 12 (new vessel) | 3 × pack of 5 | ₹601.80 | 3 spare — gate 1's five can be among them |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 2,492.3 g | 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹1,274.80 | One melt for every arm |
| Cucumber Green Tea | 216.7 g | 2 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹882.05 | One bottle |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 18 + 2 spare | 1 × pack of 20 | ₹118.00 | Example wick line — the new vessel needs its own burn-tested wick |
| Wick stickers | 18 | 1 × sheet of 40 | ₹100.00 | — |
| CSI total for gate 2 | ₹3,259.85 |
Not on the list, because CSI does not sell them: a jar warmer and a surface thermometer for the warm arm. The Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00) does gate 1's weighing; the Pen Thermometer (₹354.00) reads the wax.
The decision rule
Apply it from the top and stop at the first line that is true.
| If this is true | Buy | And change |
|---|---|---|
| Gate 1 shows no published or confirmed hot-pour limit compatible with your wax | Nothing | Choose another vessel or another wax for it |
| Gate 2: new jar clean at room glass; gate 3 passes at 30 days | The production quantity — e.g. 2,000 Salsa jars (₹59,000.00 in listed 100-packs, or a WhatsApp quote) | New settings card; wick approved for this vessel |
| Gate 2: clean only with warm glass; gate 3 passes | The production quantity, once preheat labour is priced | Preheat on this vessel's card only |
| Gate 2 or 3 fails | Nothing more | Pour window and cooling tests in this vessel — or drop it |
| Your current jar spots in gate 2 | Nothing yet | Fix today's conditions; repeat gate 2 |
Once the vessel passes, its settings go into your jar-preparation and pouring SOP as their own card, and its empty-jar weights and order date go on the shelf with two retained jars. If a thick luxury jar already spots more than your test jar, that page is the diagnosis; whether a supplier change needs a test even with identical dimensions covers the same jar from a new source.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell jars by the hundred, and this page tells you not to order them until a sample pack, a side-by-side screen and a pilot have passed — and says plainly that a frosted jar hides spots rather than fixing adhesion.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Fills at 8%: Yankee illustrative 110 g, Salsa illustrative 160 g (brim volumes, fills not published — weigh a test pour), Clear 150 g 150 g (page fill). Warm glass about 35–45°C is a labelled example setting, measured, never hotter than the wax or a jar's limit. Working practices: 6 jars per arm in gate 2, a 50-candle pilot kept 30 days, 5% pour loss, photo checkpoints at 48 hours, 7 days and 30 days, a 0–4 house scale. Example figures: a 2,000-jar order, a 20% spotted share if untested. Pilot and order prices use listed packs; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp with no published discount. Per-candle cost uses the CSI 464 5 kg rate, the Cucumber Green Tea 1 kg rate, the jar prices and the Eco Thin C1 example wick at ₹5.90. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — fragrance load up to 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), stir 2 minutes, cure at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks, and "excellent adhesion to glass and container surfaces"; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range, single-pour, "excellent glass adhesion"; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, "formulated for excellent glass adhesion"; Natural Soy Pearl — no temperature, fragrance ceiling or adhesion statement published; Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) — fill approximately 150 g, "safe for hot pour up to 85°C", thick-walled clear glass (thickness in mm not published); Borosilicate 600 g jar — "ideal for 500–600 g wax fill" and a "smooth inner surface for … clean adhesion" claim. All three adhesion claims are the same claim, so they rank nothing. CSI publishes no adhesion, wet-spot, shrinkage or contraction data for any wax, oil, dye or jar, no glass thickness or internal diameter for any jar, no hot-pour limit except the Clear 150 g jar's 85°C, no wick size for any jar, and no industry acceptance threshold for wet spots exists — every acceptance line on this page is a labelled house standard. Wet-spot mechanisms (contraction as wax cools, cold glass, uneven cooling, residues on glass) are general candle-making knowledge, described as commonly reported, not measured by CSI. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
