32-candle staged comparison · Chunks vs CSI 468 · Dark Vanilla Oud · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Same oil and wick, or optimise each wax? Both, in stages. Fixed recipe first to screen; identical optimisation plan per finalist second; head-to-head at each wax's best third.

When is the fixed test enough? When you need a backup or replacement with no recipe change. A wax that needs a new wick is not a drop-in.

How many candles? In the example 6 for the screen, 20 for optimisation and 6 for the head-to-head: 32 in all.

What does it cost? ₹10,397.46 for all three stages, ₹2,710.02 for the screen alone. See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: Both. Screen with the same oil, load and wick; then optimise each surviving wax with an identical plan; then compare the optimised bests side by side.
Why: Wicks are sized for a particular wax, so a fixed test favours whichever wax suits your current wick; an optimised-only test mixes wax and recipe differences.
Plan: Stage 1 6 candles · Stage 2 wick bracket + load ladder, 20 candles · Stage 3 6 candles. Mechanism.
Fixed first, optimised second, compared at their best third Example: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks vs CSI 468 · Dark Vanilla Oud · 200 g White Matte jar · 32 candles in all STAGE 1 Fixed-recipe screen Same oil, 8% load, Eco Thin C1, same jar and fill — 3 per wax Drops unsafe or far-off waxes 6 candles STAGE 2 Optimise each finalist Wick bracket: Thin C1 · Thick C2 · Cotton Braided; load ladder 6–10% within each wax's stated ceiling 20 candles STAGE 3 Head-to-head at their best Each wax on its own best wick and load, beside the other Decide on sheet + cost per candle 6 candles Stage 1 alone is unfair to a wax that needs a different wick; Stage 2 alone hides which wax needs more help. Run both, in that order, and keep the Stage 1 control candles as the reference throughout.
The three stages in order. Stage 1 uses one fixed recipe for every wax and removes misfits; Stage 2 gives each finalist the same optimisation plan; Stage 3 compares each wax at its own best wick and load. Candle counts are the worked example's and are labelled working practice.
Straight answer
Should I compare soy wax suppliers using exactly the same fragrance oil and wick or optimise each wax separately before deciding?
Both, in stages — and in that order. Start with a fixed-recipe screen: the same oil, load, wick, jar and fill for every wax. It shows how each wax fits your candle as it is today and removes any that fail a safety line. It is not a verdict on which wax is better, because a wick is sized for one wax and the wax that happens to suit it wins. Then give every surviving wax the same optimisation plan, decided in advance: a small wick bracket at your current load, then a load ladder on the chosen wick, inside each wax's stated ceiling. Finally, pour each wax at its own best wick and load side by side and decide on the full scoring sheet and on cost per candle at each best recipe. If you only need a backup with no recipe change, stop after the screen. Worked on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 with Dark Vanilla Oud, all three stages take 32 candles and ₹10,397.46 of CSI materials.
One line: screen on a fixed recipe, choose on each wax's best — and give every wax the same number of chances.
Comparing Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 properly — a fixed-recipe screen, then each wax optimised on its own wick and load, then the two optimised bests head-to-head — takes 32 candles of Dark Vanilla Oud and costs ₹10,397.46 in CSI materials. The screen alone is ₹2,710.02.

Both — fixed first to screen, optimised second to choose

The same wick is a fair test of which wax suits your current candle. It is an unfair test of which wax is better.

This question has two honest answers, and each is wrong on its own. Testing every wax with exactly the same oil, load and wick is the cleanest possible comparison: change one variable, see what moves. But a wick is sized for a particular wax in a particular jar, so the wax that happens to suit your current wick wins, and a wax that would be excellent on a slightly different wick looks bad. Optimising each wax separately is fairer to the waxes, but it compares two different recipes, and you can no longer tell whether a difference comes from the wax or from the wick and load you chose for it.

So do both, in order. Stage 1 is a fixed-recipe screen: same oil, same load, same wick, same jar, same everything. It answers the narrow question — how does each wax behave in my candle as it is today? — and removes any wax that fails a safety line or is far off. Stage 2 optimises each wax that survived: a small wick bracket and a short load ladder, inside each wax's own stated ceiling. Stage 3 puts the two optimised versions side by side and decides, on the scoring sheet and on cost per candle at each wax's own best recipe. The Stage 1 candles stay on the bench throughout as the reference.

Which stage matters most depends on what you are doing. If you are adding a backup wax to an existing product, Stage 1 is the whole test — you do not want to change the recipe, so a wax that needs a new wick is not a backup. Qualifying a second source per bestseller works that way. If you are choosing a long-term wax for a new or reformulated range, Stage 2 and Stage 3 are where the decision is made, and Stage 1 just stops you wasting time on the obvious misfits.

The CSI principle
Screen on a fixed recipe; choose on each wax's best recipe.
The fixed test tells you how a wax fits your current candle. The optimised test tells you how good each wax can be. A supplier decision needs both.

Stage 1: the fixed-recipe screen

The example compares Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468. Both have the same published fragrance ceiling — CSI's product pages state up to 13% for each — which makes them a clean pair for a load ladder later. The recipe is a 200 g candle in a White Matte Glass Jar with Dark Vanilla Oud Fragrance Oil at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax on CSI's finished-weight convention) and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 wick. Pour 3 candles of each wax on the same day — two to burn, one for the shelf. Each wax gets its own maker's temperatures: CSI's product page states a maximum fragrance load of 13%, fragrance addition at 80–90°C, pour at 75–80°C in its spec table (its step list also shows 70–80°C), and a cure of at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; no melt point is published; CSI's product page states a melting point of 50–53°C, pour temperature 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13% and a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage.

Stage 1 · fixed recipe · labelled working practice
What the screen can and cannot tell you
Stage 1 result What it means Next step
Both waxes fine on every line Either could replace your current wax with no recipe change Stage 2 only if you want to know which can be better
One wax tunnels on Thin C1 It may need a larger wick — not necessarily a worse wax Stage 2 wick bracket for that wax
One wax overfeeds: taller flame, mushrooming It may need a smaller or different wick Stage 2 bracket; safety line already flagged
One wax sweats or frosts on the shelf Oil binding or crystal behaviour at this load Stage 2 load ladder; may still drop out
One wax soots or overheats on every burn Safety failure on the shared recipe Drop it unless you are prepared to reformulate
Declaring the Stage 1 winner the better wax. A maker screens two waxes on their existing Thin C1 wick; one tunnels slightly, so they buy the other in bulk. The tunnelling wax may have been the stronger performer on a different wick. Fix: call a Stage 1 result what it is — "fits my current recipe" — and only call a wax better after it has been compared at its best. Why waxes with similar specs need different wicks explains the mechanism.

Stage 2: optimise each finalist, the same way

Optimising fairly means giving every wax the same number of chances, not the same wick.

Stage 2 is where most comparisons go wrong, because one wax gets a careful afternoon of tuning and the other gets one try. The fix is to give each finalist an identical optimisation plan, decided before you start: the same wick options, the same load steps, the same number of candles. Change one variable at a time — wick first, then load — so you know which change helped.

1
Wick bracket at the fixed loadFor each wax, pour 2 candles at 8% on each of three wick options: Eco Thin C1, Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made. These are three different constructions to compare, not a size ladder: CSI publishes no wick-size chart and no CSI wick is claimed as a step from another. Pick the wick that gives a full pool by your usual burn with no safety line worse than the Stage 1 control.
2
Load ladder on the chosen wickOn each wax's chosen wick, pour 2 candles at 6% and 2 at 10%; the 8% point already exists from the bracket. Both waxes' pages state up to 13%, so the ladder stays well inside both ceilings. Higher is not automatically better: a heavier load can sweat on the shelf or change how the wick behaves.
3
Pick each wax's best recipe on your own ruleWrite the rule before you burn: for example, "the lowest load that is not distinguishable from the 10% candle in a blind throw test, on the wick that reaches a full pool without exceeding control on any safety line". Apply it identically to both waxes.
4
Record the cost of each wax's best recipeA wax that needs a dearer wick or more oil to reach its best costs more per candle. That cost belongs in the comparison — see the economics section below.
Stage 2 per wax · identical plan for every finalist · labelled working practice
The optimisation grid
Variable Options Candles per wax Held constant
Wick (at 8%) Eco Thin C1 · Eco Thick C2 · Cotton Braided 6 Oil, jar, fill, cure, room
Load (on chosen wick) 6% · (8% from bracket) · 10% 4 Wick, oil, jar, fill, cure, room
Ceiling check Chunks 13%, CSI 468 13% (product pages) — Never above the stated ceiling
Stage 2 total 10 per wax · 20 in all
Keep the Stage 1 control lit beside every Stage 2 burn
Every Stage 2 candle burns beside a Stage 1 candle of the same wax on the original recipe. That way "better" always means "better than the starting point", and a wick change that improves the pool but raises the jar reading shows up immediately.

Stage 3: compare the two optimised bests

Pour 3 candles of each wax at its own best wick and load, on the same day, and run the full comparison: matched burns, one of each to the end of life, blind hot and cold throw, shelf storage. Now the comparison is fair to both waxes, and the scoring sheet answers the question you actually care about: which wax makes the better candle when each is given its best chance?

One sheet per burn · Stage 3 · optimised recipes side by side

Why optimisation can change the cost ranking

On a fixed recipe, the cheaper wax per kilo is the cheaper candle. Once each wax is optimised, that can change: one wax might reach its best at 6% on a ₹5.90 wick, the other at 10% on a ₹12.00 wick. The table shows material cost per 200 g candle for every combination the Stage 2 grid can produce, at the 5 kg wax rate (Chunks ₹599.00 a kilo, CSI 468 ₹637.00) and the 1 kg rate for Dark Vanilla Oud (₹5.69 a gram), with the ₹70.80 jar, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Per 200 g candle · wax at 5 kg rate · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026 · wicks wicks & jars verified 10 September 2026
Material cost of every recipe the optimisation grid can produce
Wax · load Eco Thin C1 (₹5.90) Eco Thick C2 (₹9.44) Cotton Braided (₹12.00)
Chunks · 6% ₹257.60 ₹261.14 ₹263.70
Chunks · 8% ₹277.97 ₹281.51 ₹284.07
Chunks · 10% ₹298.34 ₹301.88 ₹304.44
CSI 468 · 6% ₹264.75 ₹268.29 ₹270.85
CSI 468 · 8% ₹284.96 ₹288.50 ₹291.06
CSI 468 · 10% ₹305.18 ₹308.72 ₹311.28

Three hypothetical outcomes show why this matters — they are examples of what Stage 2 might find, not results. If Chunks reaches its best at 8% on Thin C1, it costs ₹277.97. If CSI 468 reaches an equal result at 6% on Thin C1, it costs ₹264.75 — cheaper, despite the dearer wax, because Dark Vanilla Oud at ₹5.69 a gram is the expensive ingredient and 2% less of it saves ₹22.76. If instead Chunks needed 10% on Cotton Braided, it would cost ₹304.44. A fixed-recipe comparison could never show any of this. Comparing total formulation cost and cost at each wax's optimal load work through the same logic in more depth.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Both waxes in the example are ours, and we have no published data to say which will win, on which wick, at which load. CSI 468 costs more per kilo; Chunks has no bulk break at all — its 10 kg bag is ₹599.90 a kilo, dearer than two 5 kg bags. If your Stage 3 shows that your current non-CSI wax is better at its best than either of ours, stay with it.

The priced kit for all three stages

Each wax covers 16 candles: 3 in Stage 1, 10 in Stage 2 and 3 in Stage 3. At 8% each candle takes 184 g of wax; at 6%, 188 g; at 10%, 180 g. That is 2,944.0 g per wax, 3,091.2 g with a 5% allowance. The oil covers all 32 candles: 512.0 g, 537.6 g with the allowance. Stage 3 is priced at 8% for planning; if a wax's best is 10%, it needs 12 g more oil. Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; wicks & jars verified 10 September 2026.

When Stage 3 names a winner, buy the first production quantity in the bag size that is cheapest per kilo for it. For CSI 468 that is the 5 kg bag at ₹3,185.00 (₹637.00 a kilo), which makes 27.2 candles at 8%; for Chunks, the 5 kg bag at ₹2,995.00 (₹599.00 a kilo) — buy two 5 kg bags rather than one 10 kg if you need 10 kg, which saves ₹9.00. Before any larger order, the pilot gate in what to validate before a 500 kg order applies. The standard test candle is how you make Stage 1 repeatable for every future supplier.

Comparing a wax with a lower ceiling? Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 has a stated ceiling of 10%, so its load ladder stops at 10% — keep both waxes' ladders inside the lower of the two ceilings if you want the ladders to match. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no published ceiling; use 6–10% only as a labelled test range and ask CSI on WhatsApp. The range is in Candle Wax.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Both waxes in the example are ours and we publish no burn, throw or wick data for either. The three hypothetical outcomes in the economics section are illustrations of what optimisation can do to cost, not results.

Soy-wax prices are CSI live listings re-checked on 1 October 2026; the oil price was pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified on 10 September 2026, wick packs rechecked 25 September 2026. Candle splits, pack rounding and the cost matrix are arithmetic shown to two decimals.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the same wick when comparing soy waxes?
For the first screen, yes — it shows how each wax fits your current candle. For the final choice, no — give each wax the same optimisation plan and compare them at their best.
How do I fairly compare two soy waxes?
Use an identical plan for both: same oil, jar, fill, cure and room; the same wick options; the same load steps; the same number of candles; and the same decision rule written before you start.
Why does my new soy wax tunnel with my old wick?
Wicks are sized for how a particular wax melts and feeds the flame. A tunnel on a shared wick means the wax may need a different wick, not necessarily that it is worse.
Can a more expensive soy wax be cheaper per candle?
Yes, if at its best it needs less fragrance or a cheaper wick. With an expensive oil, 2% less load on a 200 g candle saves 4 g of oil per candle.
What fragrance load should I use when comparing soy waxes?
Start at your current load inside both waxes' stated ceilings (Chunks 13%, CSI 468 13%, CSI 464 10%), then run the same short ladder on each wax's chosen wick.
How long does a full soy wax comparison take?
Allow about a month with cure checkpoints and full-life burns across three stages. A fixed-recipe screen alone takes about two weeks.
