CSI Cost Reduction · Slow, Expensive Fragrances
A slow scent that earns its keep needs a smaller bottle, not an exit. Dark Vanilla in 100 g bottles costs ₹4.06 more a candle and frees ₹6,856.00; drop only scents that earn less than they cost to keep.
₹6,856.00
freed on day one by buying Dark Vanilla in 100 g instead of 1 kg (worked example) · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I discontinue expensive slow-selling fragrances? Usually not because of the cash. Stop holding bulk of them instead. A slow scent that earns well per candle can be bought in 100 g bottles: on CSI's Dark Vanilla at 10 candles a month (worked example), that costs ₹4.06 more per candle but frees ₹6,856.00 on day one, and over the kilo's 6.25 months the premium is smaller than the cost of holding the kilo. On flat-priced oils such as Gilli Mitti, small packs cost no premium at all.

When should I drop one? When it is slow and earns less a month than it costs you to keep a scent in the range (labels, photos, listing, retests: ₹1,500.00 a month in the worked example — use your own). Lavender Oud at 2 candles a month earns ₹1,177.56: a drop candidate, even in small packs.

"They rarely recover the cash invested" — is that true? Usually not on contribution: Dark Vanilla's kilo is repaid by 1.8 months of that scent's contribution. The cash is not lost; it is parked on the shelf for 6.25 months. Fix the parking, not the scent.

What about stock I already hold? It is already paid for. Every extra candle you pour from it brings in the selling price minus wax, wick, jar and box: ₹787.18 at ₹999.00 on the premium line. Pour it into a last batch, smaller candles or gift sets; do not stop pouring it because of what it cost.
The short answer
The cash test: months to use the pack you hold, rupees locked in it, contribution per candle and per month, and the per-gram premium of a smaller pack.
Keep: fast enough to use a pack within about 3 months. Keep, buy small: slow but earning more than it costs to keep (Dark Vanilla, Gilli Mitti, Amber Oud Royal in the worked range).
Seasonal: earns in one season; buy for the season only. Drop: slow and earning less than ₹1,500.00 a month (Lavender Oud, worked).
Existing stock: sunk cost. Sell it through as candles; each extra candle adds ₹787.18 at ₹999.00.
Keep, buy small, or drop? Each scent placed by how long its pack sits (across) and what it earns (up). Worked example: 200 g candles at 8%, CSI oil prices, your own volumes go here. 0 1,000 2,000 3,000 4,000 5,000 6,000 0 3 6 9 12 15 months to use the pack you hold contribution a month, rupees KEEP KEEP, BUY SMALL PACKS SEASONAL / REPRICE DROP, SELL THROUGH Dark Vanilla Gilli Mitti Amber Oud Royal Lavender Oud Citrus Lemon (reference) ₹19,674.80, off the top pack held today same scent bought in 100 g bottles Dashed lines: 3-month cover cap (judgement) and ₹1,500.00 a month to keep a scent (worked example).
Four slow, expensive scents and one fast reference, worked example. Held in bulk, Dark Vanilla, Gilli Mitti and Amber Oud Royal all sit to the right of the three-month cover cap, but above the line of what a scent costs to keep: they earn their place. Bought in 100 g bottles they move left of the cap without changing what they earn. Lavender Oud, at 2 candles a month, earns less than the worked ₹1,500.00 overhead: the one drop candidate.
Straight answer
Should I discontinue expensive slow-selling fragrances if they require separate bulk inventory and rarely recover the cash invested?
Discontinue the bulk inventory first, and the scent only if it still fails the cash test. Run four numbers per scent: months to use the pack you hold, rupees locked in it, contribution per candle and per month, and the per-gram premium of a smaller pack. In the worked range, Dark Vanilla at 10 candles a month earns ₹4,148.40 a month but keeps a ₹7,646.00 kilo on the shelf for 6.25 months; buying 100 g bottles instead costs ₹4.06 more per candle and frees ₹6,856.00. Gilli Mitti is flat per gram from 50 g, so small packs cost nothing extra. Amber Oud Royal, a perfume-grade oil, carries a real small-pack premium (₹21.60 a candle) but frees ₹10,341.00. All three earn more than the worked ₹1,500.00 a month it costs to keep a scent, so they stay, in small packs. Lavender Oud at 2 candles a month earns ₹1,177.56: drop it, and sell through what you hold, because stock already bought is a sunk cost and each extra candle still brings in the selling price minus wax, wick, jar and box.
One line: a slow scent that earns its keep should move to small packs, not off the menu; drop only the ones that earn less a month than they cost to keep.
Small packs for slow scents: Dark Vanilla 100 g ₹790.00, Gilli Mitti 100 g ₹896.00 (same per gram as the kilo), Amber Oud Royal 100 g ₹1,299.00, Lavender Oud 100 g ₹1,200.00 (cheaper per gram than its 500 g), Vetiver 100 g ₹600.00. All these 100 g sizes are in stock on 4 October 2026.

The cash test, scent by scent

"Rarely recovers the cash" usually means "the cash is parked", not "the cash is lost".

The worry in the title is real: a kilo of an expensive oil that sells a few candles a month sits on the shelf for half a year or more. But it mixes two things that need separating: whether the scent earns (contribution per candle and per month) and how long its oil waits (months to use the pack). Here is a worked range of five scents, priced on CSI oils, with 200 g candles at 8% (16 g of oil), CSI Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco C2 wick and your own jar and box (worked examples). Selling prices are worked examples: ₹749.00 for standard candles, ₹999.00 for a premium perfume-grade line.

The cash test · five scents · pack held today
Candles a month and selling prices: worked examples · CSI oil prices live 4 October 2026 · contribution = selling price − materials (excludes labour, freight, GST, marketing)
Scent Candles a month Pack held Cash locked Months to use it Contribution a candle Contribution a month Months of contribution to repay the pack
Citrus Lemon 40 1 kg ₹2,832.00 1.56 ₹491.87 ₹19,674.80 0.1
Dark Vanilla 10 1 kg ₹7,646.00 6.25 ₹414.84 ₹4,148.40 1.8
Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) 6 500 g ₹4,480.00 5.21 ₹393.82 ₹2,362.92 1.9
Amber Oud Royal 5 1 kg ₹11,640.00 12.50 ₹600.94 ₹3,004.70 3.9
Lavender Oud 2 500 g ₹6,200.00 15.62 ₹588.78 ₹1,177.56 5.3

Read the last column first. Even the slowest earners repay their pack's cost in a few months of their own contribution; Dark Vanilla's kilo takes 1.8 months, Amber Oud Royal's 3.9. So these scents do recover their cash. What they also do is park it: Dark Vanilla's oil sits 6.25 months, Amber Oud Royal's 12.50, Lavender Oud's 15.62. That parked cash has a cost (1.5% a month in the worked example) and a risk (the scent could be dropped, the oil could change in storage; CSI does not publish shelf life). Both are fixed by changing the pack, not the range.

Count the scent's own contribution, not the range average
A perfume-grade oil can cost two or three times a candle-grade one per gram and still earn more per candle if it sits in a premium line. Price each scent's candle on its own oil cost. How fragrance-specific COGS feeds pricing is the fragrance-specific COGS post; the oud flagship case (cut load, raise price, or accept the margin) is the expensive oud candle post.

Small packs: the premium against the parked cash

Paying a little more per gram is often cheaper than holding a kilo.

The alternative to bulk is the 100 g bottle (or 50 g, where it is no dearer). It usually costs more per gram, so compare that premium with what the bulk pack costs you to hold over the same months.

Small packs against bulk · same scent, same months
Holding cost = half the pack × 1.5% a month × months to use it (worked) · premium = (small-pack per gram − bulk per gram) × 16 g × candles
Scent Bulk per candle 100 g per candle Small-pack premium a candle Cash freed on day one Holding cost of bulk over its life Verdict
Dark Vanilla (1 kg → 100 g) ₹122.34 ₹126.40 ₹4.06 ₹6,856.00 ₹358.41 small packs cheaper overall by ₹104.66
Gilli Mitti (500 g → 100 g) ₹143.36 ₹143.36 none: flat per gram ₹3,584.00 ₹175.00 small packs, no contest
Amber Oud Royal (1 kg → 100 g) ₹186.24 ₹207.84 ₹21.60 ₹10,341.00 ₹1,091.25 small packs cost ₹258.75 more over the year, and remove ₹11,640.00 of exposure
Lavender Oud (500 g → 100 g) ₹198.40 ₹192.00 none: 100 g is ₹6.40 cheaper ₹5,000.00 ₹726.56 small packs, if kept at all

On three of the four, small packs win on money alone. On Amber Oud Royal the 100 g premium (₹108.00 a month) is a little more than the cost of holding the kilo over its 12.50 months, so small packs cost ₹258.75 more across that period, in exchange for taking ₹11,640.00 of oil off the shelf and the risk of being stuck with most of it. For most small businesses that is a good trade. Perfume-grade "inspired" listings are often priced flat per gram from 50 g or 100 g up, which makes the small pack free; their pages quote perfume usage rates, not candle loads, so check the candle wording before you use one at all.

Argued against our own interest: if you sell fewer than about ten candles a month of a scent, do not buy our kilo of it, whatever the per-gram saving. Buy 100 g, or 50 g where it costs the same per gram, and re-order. On Lavender Oud the kilo is not even cheaper per gram than the 100 g.
Mistake: running a slow scent on 15 g samples to avoid tying up cash. Why it fails: sample sizes cost far more per gram (Vetiver's 15 g is 108% dearer per gram than its 100 g) and a 15 g bottle does not make one 200 g candle at 8%. Fix: 100 g is the working small pack; samples are for testing.

Keep, small-pack, seasonal or drop

Put each scent in one box using two questions: does it use its pack within about 3 months, and does it earn more a month than it costs you to keep a scent in the range? That second number is yours: labels and their minimum orders, photography, a listing to maintain, retests when wax or wick changes, and shelf space. ₹1,500.00 a month is a worked example; use your own.

The decision matrix · judgement, with your own thresholds
Cover cap 3 months (judgement) · overhead ₹1,500.00 a month (worked example)
Box Test Action Worked example
Keep uses a pack within 3 months; earns above overhead Buy the cheapest pack per gram within the cap Citrus Lemon, ₹19,674.80 a month
Keep, buy small slower than the cap in bulk; earns above overhead Move to 100 g (or 50 g if no dearer); stop buying bulk Dark Vanilla, Gilli Mitti, Amber Oud Royal
Seasonal earns well for one season, little otherwise List it for the season; buy for that season only; rest it the rest of the year a spiced or festive scent from October to December
Drop slow even in small packs; earns below overhead Stop buying; sell through what you hold; tell regular buyers Lavender Oud, ₹1,177.56 a month, ₹322.44 short

Two cautions. A scent can earn little because it is underpriced, not because nobody wants it; for perfume-grade oils check the selling price before you check the exit (the oud pricing logic is in the expensive oud candle post). And dropping a scent is a customer decision: pause restocking and watch whether its buyers move to other scents before you delist, as described in the consolidation post. The reverse question, how far the range can shrink before it loses appeal, belongs there too.

Mistake: replacing a dropped expensive oil with a cheaper "similar" one under the same candle name. Why it fails: that is a reformulation, with its own load, throw, wick and colour behaviour, and your buyers bought the old scent. Fix: launch it as a new scent after testing, or retest fully if it must carry the old name (what to retest when the oil changes).

One candle, two ways of buying its oil

The small-pack premium in context: Dark Vanilla's 200 g candle at 8% with its oil bought by the kilo and by the 100 g bottle. Materials only; labour, freight, GST and marketing excluded.

BOM per 200 g Dark Vanilla candle at 8% · kilo against 100 g bottle · % of COGS
CSI prices live 4 October 2026 · jar and box: worked examples · % rounded (columns sum to 99.9% and 100.0%)
Line Quantity Kilo (₹) % of COGS 100 g bottle (₹) % of COGS
Dark Vanilla 16 g ₹122.34 36.6% ₹126.40 37.4%
Wax, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 184 g ₹110.38 33.0% ₹110.38 32.6%
Wick, Eco C2 1 ₹9.44 2.8% ₹9.44 2.8%
Jar with lid (yours) 1 ₹72.00 21.5% ₹72.00 21.3%
Box and label (yours) 1 ₹20.00 6.0% ₹20.00 5.9%
COGS ₹334.16 100% ₹338.22 100%

The 100 g route adds ₹4.06 to a ₹334.16 candle: 1.2% of materials, 0.54 margin points on a ₹749.00 price. That is the whole price of not parking ₹6,856.00 of oil for 6.25 months. If you are tempted to drop Dark Vanilla because "the kilo never seems to go", this is the number that says keep it and change the bottle.

Selling through the stock you already hold

What the oil cost is history. What it can still earn is the decision.

Whatever you decide for future purchases, the oil on the shelf is already paid for. Suppose you hold 700 g of Amber Oud Royal (worked example). It cost ₹8,148.00; that money is spent whether you pour it or not. The only question is what pouring it adds. Each extra 200 g candle needs wax, wick, jar and box (₹211.82) and brings in its selling price: at ₹999.00 that is ₹787.18 of cash per candle; even at a last-batch price of ₹799.00 (worked example) it is ₹587.18.

1
Keep pouring at the pace it sells700 g makes 43 candles of 200 g at 8%; at 5 a month that is 8.8 months. If the scent stays (small-pack box), simply stop re-buying the kilo and pour the bottle down.
2
Make smaller candlesA 100 g candle at 8% uses 8 g of oil; 700 g makes 87 of them. Smaller candles at a lower price point can move a slow scent faster; check wick and burn for the new size first.
3
Use it in gift sets and discovery boxesDiwali and corporate gifting suit mixed sets. A slow premium scent as one candle in a trio sells alongside your fast ones.
4
Run a "last batch" listingTell your regular buyers the scent is retiring; a clear end date often brings forward the orders that would have trickled in.
5
Consider melts or testers, with careWax melts use small amounts of oil per piece (CSI lists Wax Melts Containers Empty, ₹29.50 per tray in the 10-pack). It is a new product format: no CSI wax page states a melt load, so test it like any new product.
6
Do not blend it away into another candleAdding the leftover oil to a different scent's recipe changes that candle's formula; if you must, treat it as a new blend and retest (replacing one oil in a blend).
Mistake: refusing to discount the last batch "because the oil was so expensive". Why it fails: the oil's cost is sunk; holding the candles or the oil earns nothing and risks the oil changing in storage. Fix: price the last batch on what each candle still adds (₹587.18 at ₹799.00), not on what the oil once cost.

A quarterly review routine

Slow sellers drift into dead stock between reviews, not during them. A short routine every quarter keeps them honest:

Quarterly slow-scent review · what to record per scent
All figures from your own sales and purchase records
Record Why Trigger
Candles sold a month (last 3 months) sets oil use and the right pack use falls by a third: step down a pack size
Grams on the shelf and months of cover shows parked cash over 3 months: stop re-buying until it falls
Contribution a month does it earn its place? below your overhead two quarters running: drop or reprice
Smallest in-stock pack and its premium the alternative to bulk premium small: move to small packs now
Oil lot and date opened condition and consistency a new lot: sniff and burn against a retained sample

Which scents deserve kilo purchases at all, and which should stay in trial sizes, is the 1 kg or trial-size question; what to compare when a new lot arrives is the new-batch comparison. The 5 kg version of the bulk question is the consumption-threshold post.

This page is for you if you hold kilos of scents that sell a handful of candles a month and worry the cash never comes back. The usual answer: keep the ones that earn their place, move them to 100 g bottles, sell through what you hold, and drop only the scents that earn less than they cost to keep. Fragrance cost across the whole range is summarised in the four-lever fragrance cost system.

Five slow-seller ladders

fragrance oil · gourmand · slow but earning: buy small
Dark Vanilla Fragrance
The page describes "rich vanilla and spice opening into deep caramel and cream, settling into dark amber and warm musk", states "candles (6-10%)" and notes "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax". At 10 candles a month (worked) a kilo lasts 6.25 months; 100 g bottles cost ₹4.06 more per candle (₹40.60 a month) and free ₹6,856.00 on day one. Argued against our own interest: at this volume, do not buy our kilo. Over the pack's life the small-bottle premium is less than the cost of holding the kilo.

The page describes "fresh rain, soft soil, natural patchouli, damp woods, and light musk. Evokes petrichor - the scent of rain on dry earth." and states "The recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles." It costs ₹8.96 a gram at every size from 50 g to 1 kg, so a slow seller needs no bulk at all: 100 g bottles cost exactly what the 500 g does per gram, and free ₹3,584.00 against holding 500 g. fragrance oil · perfume-grade oud · the expensive slow seller
Amber Oud Royal – Opulence, Redefined
A fine-perfume listing. The page describes a scent that "opens with rich resins and spices, unfolds into smoky oud and lush florals, and lingers with golden amber, creamy sandalwood, and dark musk"; its usage table lists "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%" and suggests that for candles you "start at 7%" (the structured candle-load field is empty, so we quote the table). At 5 candles a month a kilo is 12.50 months of stock, ₹11,640.00 on the shelf. 100 g bottles cost ₹21.60 more per candle and free ₹10,341.00. Lavender Oud – Calm Meets Kingdom
A fine-perfume listing whose usage table lists "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%" and suggests that for candles you "start at 6–8%". Its ladder is unusual: 100 g and 1 kg are ₹12.00 a gram, the 500 g ₹12.40. A maker holding 500 g pays ₹6.40 more per candle than with 100 g bottles, and ties up ₹6,200.00. The CSI principle
Drop the bulk before you drop the scent.
A slow scent that earns its keep needs a smaller bottle, not an exit. Stock already bought is spent; pour it.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils named here and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you to stop buying our kilos of slow scents, points out where our 500 g costs more per gram than our 100 g, and recommends 100 g bottles over bulk for low volumes.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, size by size; Vetiver's 1 kg is out of stock on that date and flagged; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a structured candle-load field is empty we quote the page's usage table and say so. CSI does not publish shelf life.

The title gives no figures, so candles a month per scent, selling prices (₹749.00, ₹999.00), the ₹1,500.00 scent overhead, the 1.5% cost of money, the 700 g remainder, the ₹799.00 last-batch price, the jar and box lines are labelled worked examples; the matrix thresholds are judgement, not financial advice. Frequently asked questions

Should I stop selling candle scents that sell slowly?
Only if they earn less a month than it costs you to keep a scent in the range. Slow scents that earn well should move to small packs instead: on CSI Dark Vanilla, 100 g bottles cost ₹4.06 more per candle and free ₹6,856.00.
How do I stop expensive fragrance oil tying up cash?
Buy the pack you will use within about three months. For a scent selling a few candles a month that is usually the 100 g bottle, even at a small per-gram premium.
Is buying fragrance oil in 100 g bottles more expensive than 1 kg?
Usually a little per gram, sometimes not at all. CSI's Gilli Mitti is ₹8.96 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg; Lavender Oud's 100 g is cheaper per gram than its 500 g; Dark Vanilla's 100 g is ₹4.06 a candle dearer than its kilo.
What should I do with leftover fragrance oil from a discontinued candle?
Pour it: the oil is already paid for, so each candle adds its price minus wax, wick, jar and box (₹787.18 at ₹999.00). Use last-batch listings, smaller candles or gift sets; do not blend it into another recipe without retesting.
How do I know if a slow-selling candle is still profitable?
Work out its contribution per candle (selling price minus materials) times candles a month, and compare it with what that scent costs you to keep: labels, photos, listing and retests.
Does CSI sell small sizes of perfume-grade fragrance oils?
Yes, several start at 50 g or 100 g, and many are priced flat or nearly flat per gram. Amber Oud Royal starts at 100 g (₹1,299.00); Lavender Oud at 100 g (₹1,200.00).
Slow, expensive scents
Change the bottle before you change the range.
Run the cash test per scent, move earners to 100 g bottles, sell through what you hold, and drop only scents that earn less than they cost to keep. Tell us your slow scents on WhatsApp and we will confirm the smallest pack in stock for each.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on fragrance oil costing too much (6021–6040) in the series on candle cost reduction and raw-material optimisation. It owns the decision to keep or discontinue expensive slow-selling fragrances: the cash test (months to use the pack, cash locked, contribution, small-pack premium), small packs against bulk holding cost, the keep / small-pack / seasonal / drop matrix, and selling through stock already held.
