What Equipment Do I Need to Start a Candle Business?
Share
Which tool has no kitchen substitute? The thermometer. You cannot judge 80–90°C by eye, and the CSI 464 page gives that as the working range for melting and pouring. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354.00 and it is the highest-value tool on this page.
Is an electric wax melter worth it? At about 50 candles a month, usually yes. The Mini Electric Wax Melter is ₹2,360.00 and holds the wax at temperature while you pour a row of jars. The imported 10 kg melter at ₹21,240.00 is 9.0× the price and belongs to a very different volume.
What does a full equipment set cost? ₹5,681.82 for the day-one and month-three tiers together — thermometer, sticks, centring, melter, pitcher, wick holders, setting tool, mixer, beaker and spatula. The with-volume tier adds ₹27,090.82 more, and most makers never need it.
Equipment does seven jobs. That is the entire list.
Strip the marketing away and a candle workshop does seven things: it melts wax, weighs wax and oil, measures temperature, moves hot wax into a vessel, stirs, holds a wick upright and centred, and cleans up afterwards. Every tool ever sold to a candle maker does one of those. The useful question is therefore not “what should I buy” but “which of these seven jobs can my kitchen do safely and repeatably, and which cannot it”.
| Job | Can a kitchen do it? | CSI tool | Price | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melt | Yes — a saucepan of water and a heatproof steel bowl | Mini Electric Wax Melter · Electric Wax Melter (Imported) | ₹2,360.00 · ₹21,240.00 / ₹25,960.00 | Month three / volume |
| Weigh | Yes — any digital kitchen scale that reads to 1 g | Candle Making Weighing Scale (stock is thin in September 2026) | ₹354.00 | Optional |
| Measure temperature | No | Pen Thermometer | ₹354.00 | Day one |
| Pour | Partly — a steel jug works until the batch outgrows it | Steel Pouring Pitcher 600 ML · Candle Wax Pouring Jug · Wax Pouring Funnel | ₹708.00 · ₹531.00 · ₹1,888.00 | Month three / volume |
| Stir | Partly — a steel spoon works but holds heat and wax | Bamboo Stirring Sticks · CSI Pro Mixer · Silicone Spatula | ₹118.00 · ₹349.00 · ₹175.82 | Day one / month three |
| Hold and centre the wick | Partly — two chopsticks and a rubber band, badly | Wick Centering Device · Bamboo Wick Holder · Steel Wick Holder · Wick Setting Tool | ₹118.00 · ₹118.00 · ₹250.00 · ₹399.00 | Day one / month three |
| Clean and finish | Yes — kitchen roll, hot water, a blunt knife | Steel Scraper · Candle Wick Cutter · Candle Wick Trimmer | ₹236.00 · ₹295.00 · ₹588.82 | Later |
Only one row says no. That is the real finding of this page, and it is worth stating on a supplier’s own blog: a new candle business needs far less equipment than the internet suggests, and the money saved belongs in fragrance testers and a second wick size instead.
Day one: ₹590.00 and not a rupee more
The day-one list is three items because three jobs cannot be done acceptably with a domestic substitute. Temperature cannot be guessed. Stirring fragrance into wax needs something you can leave in the melt and throw away without mourning a kitchen utensil. And a wick that drifts off centre while soy sets over twenty minutes ruins the candle after all the work is done.
| Tool | Price | Per unit | Why it cannot wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pen Thermometer | ₹354.00 | — | The CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring; the Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C and a pour at 75–80°C. Every one of those numbers is unusable without a reading. |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks | ₹118.00 for 5 | ₹23.60 | The Chunks page asks for a slow two-minute stir after adding fragrance. A stick you can discard keeps scent from crossing between batches. |
| Wick Centering Device | ₹118.00 for 5 | ₹23.60 | Soy sets slowly. An off-centre wick burns one side of the jar and no amount of cure fixes it. |
Everything else on day one is a borrow. A saucepan half-filled with water and a heatproof steel bowl is a double boiler and it is how most Indian candle brands started. A digital kitchen scale that reads to 1 g does the weighing. A steel jug pours. A cardboard tray keeps the setting candles out of a draught. None of that costs anything new, and none of it makes a worse candle than a ₹2,360.00 melter does — it simply takes longer and demands more attention.
What your kitchen provides — and what it must never provide again
Almost every Indian candle business starts in a kitchen, and that is fine. It is worth being precise about which parts of the kitchen are genuinely usable and which are a bad idea, because the honest answer is not “buy everything new”.
Safe to borrow
A deep saucepan and a heatproof steel or glass bowl make a working double boiler. A 1 g digital scale weighs both wax and oil. A steel jug or tumbler pours a small batch. Old newspaper and a baking tray protect the counter. A kettle of hot water and a blunt knife clean up spilt wax faster than any tool sold for the purpose.
Borrowed once, then retired from food
General practice across the trade — not a CSI-specific rule — is that once a pan, bowl, spoon or jug has held wax and fragrance oil, it stays with the candles. Wax films are difficult to remove completely and fragrance oils are persistent. Buy a second cheap saucepan for the wax rather than cycling one between dal and soy. That is also the practical argument for the ₹118.00 Bamboo Stirring Sticks: a disposable stirrer never goes back into the food cupboard by accident.
Not usable, whatever the internet says
A microwave gives you no control over the 80–90°C window and no way to read the temperature mid-melt. Direct heat under a pan of wax with no water jacket is the other one to avoid. And an Indian summer adds its own constraint: a kitchen at 38–40°C in Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur will keep soy molten far longer than the same room in December, so the same pour needs a different setting time, and during the monsoon in Mumbai or Kochi the humidity affects how the top surface finishes. Ventilation matters in both seasons; work where the window opens.
Melting: the double boiler, the 1 litre melter and the 10 kg melter
This is the only equipment decision with real money in it, so it deserves a section of its own. The three options are not three qualities of the same thing; they are three different relationships with time.
| Option | Price | What it does well | What it does badly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saucepan and steel bowl, from your kitchen | Nothing new | Complete control if you are watching it; no capacity limit beyond the bowl; fine for ten or twenty candles | Needs constant attention; the wax cools while you wick and pour; occupies a hob you may need for dinner |
| Mini Electric Wax Melter, 1 litre | ₹2,360.00 | Holds a working temperature while you pour a row of jars; frees the hob; repeatable batch after batch | One litre at a time, so a big order becomes a sequence of charges; a batch bigger than the pot means going back to the bowl |
| Electric Wax Melter (Imported), 10 or 20 kgs | ₹21,240.00 / ₹25,960.00 | Volume: a full production run in one charge, with a tap to draw from | 9.0× the price of the 1 litre unit; needs dedicated space and a reason — it is a capacity purchase, not a quality one |
The honest way to decide is not a payback table with an invented labour rate — CSI does not know what your hour is worth and this page will not guess. Do it yourself in two lines. Count how many hours a month you currently spend standing over a double boiler. Multiply by the value you put on your own hour, which is your figure and nobody else’s. If that monthly number is comfortably above what the melter costs spread over a year, buy it. At around fifty candles a month most makers reach that point quickly; at ten candles a month almost nobody does.
The step from the 1 litre unit to the imported 10 kg machine is a different question again, because ₹18,880.00 is roughly what a Level 3 maker spends on a month of wax — a 10 kg pack of CSI 464 is ₹5,074.00. Buy it when you are running the small melter in back-to-back charges all day and the bottleneck is genuinely the pot, not the pouring or the wicking. Reviewers of the imported machine talk about melting time and temperature control rather than candle quality, which is exactly the right reason to buy it.
Month three: ₹5,091.82 that revenue should pay for
The month-three tier is defined by a symptom, not a date. You buy it when the same three complaints keep appearing: the wax cools before the last jar is poured, the wicks will not stay put across a tray of ten, and the fragrance stir is different every time. Each item below answers one of those.
| Tool | Price | The symptom it fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Mini Electric Wax Melter | ₹2,360.00 | Wax cooling below the pour window before the last jar is filled |
| Steel Pouring Pitcher, 600 ML | ₹708.00 | Dribbles down the outside of the jar from a wide-lipped kitchen jug |
| Steel Wick Holder, pack of 10 | ₹500.00 | Wicks drifting across a tray of ten — ₹50.00 a holder |
| Wick Setting Tool | ₹399.00 | Wick tabs that lift off the base when the wax shrinks |
| CSI Pro Mixer | ₹349.00 | A fragrance stir that varies batch to batch |
| Silicon Measuring Beaker 250 ML | ₹600.00 | Weighing oil into the hot wax instead of into its own vessel |
| Silicone Spatula | ₹175.82 | Wax left behind in the melter on every batch |
| Tier total | ₹5,091.82 | Running total with day one: ₹5,681.82 |
Two cheaper alternatives are worth naming honestly, because not every maker needs the full set. A Bamboo Wick Holder at ₹118.00 for five — ₹23.60 each — does most of what the steel holder does at a fifth of the price; a reviewer above notes it does not exert pressure on the wick. A Silicon Measuring Beaker 100 ML at ₹300.00 is half the price of the 250 ML and is ample for the ₹38.23 of oil that goes into a single 150 g candle. And a Candle Wax Pouring Jug at ₹531.00 sits below the steel pitcher if your batches are small.
Wick handling has one more branch. For jars deep enough that fingers will not reach, a Wick Inserter steel straw is ₹59.00 and a Premium Candle Wicking Needle is ₹472.00. If you also pour pillars or moulded designs, a Candle Mold Sealer is ₹472.00 — but that is a different product line, and a container brand can skip it entirely.
Later, and only when hours are the limit
The third tier costs ₹27,090.82 and takes the running total to ₹32,772.64. It is not an ambition. It is what you buy when the small melter runs all day, when you are stirring with the last of a pack of five sticks, and when trimming and finishing has become a job of its own rather than something you do while the wax sets.
| Tool | Price | Buy it when |
|---|---|---|
| Electric Wax Melter (Imported), 10 kgs | ₹21,240.00 | The 1 litre melter runs back-to-back charges through a full working day |
| Electric Wax Melter (Imported), 20 kgs | ₹25,960.00 | Stock on this variant is thin — confirm before planning around it |
| Wax Pouring Funnel, 4 nozzles | ₹1,888.00 | You are filling rows of identical jars and spillage is costing real wax |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks, pack of 100 | ₹1,888.00 | You are buying the pack of five monthly — ₹18.88 a stick against ₹23.60 |
| Steel Wick Holder, pack of 25 | ₹1,250.00 | A tray of ten has become three trays |
| Steel Scraper | ₹236.00 | Cleaning the melter is taking longer than filling it |
| Candle Wick Trimmer | ₹588.82 | You are trimming every candle before dispatch, not just testing burns |
| Tier total | ₹27,090.82 | Running total across all three tiers: ₹32,772.64 |
A word on kits, because they cut across all three tiers. The Candle Making Kit for Beginners is ₹4,130.00, the Professional Candle Making Course (PCM Kit) is ₹4,245.64 and the Complete Candle Making Course Kit is ₹6,741.34. These bundle materials and tools together, which is useful for learning and awkward for costing, because you cannot reorder just the part you used up. If your aim is to equip a business rather than to learn one, buy the tiers above; if your aim is to learn, a kit is a reasonable place to spend first — the smaller Aroma Candles Making Kit is ₹1,770.00.
The order to buy in, and the test that unlocks each tier
Equipment bought out of sequence is the most avoidable waste in a new candle business, because a tool bought early sits unused while a material bought late holds up a batch. Use a gate for each tier: you may not buy the next one until the current one is actually being used to its limit.
One seasonal note. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and a soy range wants 14 to 21 days of cure before dispatch, so festive pouring should be finished by about mid-October. Equipment bought in October does not help an October production run: it arrives, you learn it, and you lose days you do not have. If the melter is going to be needed for the festive season, buy it in August or early September and pour three ordinary batches on it first.
What is not equipment, and what CSI does not sell
Two things are routinely added to equipment lists where they do not belong. The first is raw materials — wax, fragrance oil, wicks, vessels, dyes, wick stickers and care stickers are consumed by every candle and are costed separately from tools; none of them appear in any total on this page. The second is the workshop around the tools, and here CSI has to be straightforward: it does not sell those things and publishes no rates for them, so they are left blank.
| Line | Sold by CSI? | Your figure |
|---|---|---|
| Melting, weighing, pouring, stirring, wicking and finishing tools | Yes — priced in the three tiers above | ₹590.00 / ₹5,091.82 / ₹27,090.82 |
| Workbench, shelving, storage racks, crates | No | your figure |
| Label printer, printer ink, blank label stock | No | your figure |
| Electricity, gas cylinder, a dedicated hob | No | your figure |
| Fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, gloves, apron | No | your figure |
| Rent or the value of the room you are using | No | your figure |
| Courier and freight on the tools themselves | No — quotes on WhatsApp, nothing published | your figure |
| Your hours spent learning a new tool | No | your figure |
Keep those in a separate column from the CSI totals and the picture stays honest: tools from CSI on one side, your own set-up costs on the other. Prices on the CSI store are inclusive of tax, GST invoicing is available on WhatsApp +91 7397976926, and bulk pricing on larger tool quantities is quoted there rather than published. Your own tax position and any local licensing is a question for your adviser, not for a supplier’s blog.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells every tool priced on this page, which is exactly why the page says six of the seven jobs can be done with kitchen equipment for the first month, why the day-one list is ₹590.00 rather than a full workshop, why a ₹118.00 Bamboo Wick Holder is offered as an honest alternative to the ₹500.00 steel set, and why it tells you a ₹2,360.00 melter makes the same candle as a saucepan — only faster and more alike.
Every price comes from live CSI stock on 11 September 2026, September 2026 pricing, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Temperature figures are quoted from the wax product pages, not from any test of our own. The working charge in kilograms of the 1 litre Mini Electric Wax Melter is not published, so this page does not state one. Stock counts are a snapshot: the Candle Making Weighing Scale and the 20 kgs melter variant are thin and are named rather than led with. Month-three and with-volume tiers are a recommended sequence, not measured data, and no payback period is calculated because the value of your own hour is not something a supplier can know.
