of materials held as tiered safety stock for 310 candles a month · against ₹35,523.41 for 14 days of everything · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which materials stop production? The shared ones that nothing can replace without a retest: the wax, the main container, its wick, wick stickers — and tools every pour needs, like the scale and thermometer.

How much safety stock? Days of use by tier — labelled here as A 14 days, B 7 days, C none. For this range, about 24.5 kg of wax, 111 jars and 109 Thick C2 wicks in tier A.

What about fragrance oils? Oils used in one SKU stop only that SKU, so they usually run on their reorder points. Oils shared by several SKUs earn a short buffer.

What does building it cost? ₹28,274.56 once, in real CSI packs, including a spare thermometer and scale; then it is topped up through the regular order.
The short answer
Answer: Keep safety stock of the materials whose stock-out would stop most of your output and that cannot be substituted without retesting — usually the shared wax, the main jar, its wick and stickers — plus spare tools. Single-SKU oils need little or none.
Why: Here a wax stock-out stops 100% of 310 candles a month; a Spicy Raspberry stock-out stops 13%. Fourteen days of everything holds ₹35,523.41; the tiered approach holds ₹26,866.27.
Method: Map share of output stopped → check substitutability → tier → days of use → build once in packs → top up monthly → re-tier when the range changes. Lead-time cover sits underneath.

Straight answer
Which candle raw materials should I keep as safety stock because running out would stop my entire production line?
The shared materials that nothing can replace without a retest: your main wax, the container most SKUs use, the wick in it, wick stickers — and a spare scale and thermometer. Rank every material by the share of monthly output a stock-out would stop, and ask whether anything could stand in for it (in candle-making, almost never without testing — CSI publishes no wick equivalence and no data that lets one wax replace another). Then hold days of use by tier. On this page's six-SKU example, CSI 464 and the stickers stop 100% of output, the White Matte jar and its Thick C2 wick 71%, the tin and its wick 29%, and the single-SKU oils 16% and 13%. With labelled tiers of 14 / 7 / 0 days, the buffer holds about ₹26,866.27 of materials, against ₹35,523.41 for fourteen days of everything; building it in real packs with spare tools costs ₹28,274.56 once.
One line: buffer the shared, unsubstitutable lines; let single-SKU oils run on their reorder points.
For the example range on this page — six SKUs, 310 candles a month, one wax, two containers, two wicks, four oils — the materials that stop the whole line are the shared wax, the main jar, its wick and the wick stickers. Holding 14 days of those and 7 days of the group-stopping lines takes about ₹26,866.27 of stock; a one-time build in real packs, with a spare thermometer and scale, is ₹28,274.56. The line every SKU shares is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹2,537.00 for 5 kg.

Not every stock-out is equal

Run out of Spicy Raspberry and you stop one candle. Run out of the wax and you stop the business.

Safety stock is the material you hold beyond what you expect to use before the next delivery arrives. It costs cash and shelf space, so it should go where a stock-out does the most damage. The useful question is not "how important is this material?" but "if this ran out tomorrow, what share of my production would stop?" For a shared wax, the answer is all of it. For the jar and wick used by most SKUs, most of it. For an oil used in one candle, a sliver — and that SKU can usually wait a few days for its bottle without the rest of the workshop standing still.

There is a second question: can anything stand in for it? In candle-making the honest answer is almost always no, not without testing. CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no equivalence between its wicks, and no data that would let one wax replace another in your formula without a retest. So a stock-out cannot be patched by grabbing the nearest substitute — which is precisely why the shared materials need a buffer.

The CSI principle
Safety stock follows stoppage: the more of your output a material would stop, the more days of it you hold.
Shared, unsubstitutable materials first. Single-SKU oils last. Tools that every pour depends on get a spare, not a percentage.

Step 1: map every material to the output it stops

The example range is the reader's: four fragrances — Neroli, Palo Santo, Fresh Strawberries and Spicy Raspberry — in 200 g White Matte Glass Jars (the reader's weighed fill), with Neroli and Palo Santo also in the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin (published fill). Everything is poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8%; the jars use the reader's tested Eco Thick C2 wick and the tins Eco Thin C1. 310 candles a month, about 10.3 a working day.

Reader's example range · share = candles that use the material ÷ all candles · tiers: A ≥ 50%, B 20–50%, C below 20% (labelled thresholds)
What each material would stop
Material SKUs that use it Candles a month Share of output Substitute without retest? Tier
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 6 310 100% No — new wax is a formula change A
White Matte Glass Jar 4 220 71% No — new jar, new fill and wick test A
Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 4 220 71% No — no published equivalence A
Wick Stickers 6 310 100% Only with a tested alternative (none listed by CSI) A
Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g 2 90 29% No B
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 2 90 29% No — no published equivalence B
Neroli Fragrance Oil 2 120 39% No — a different oil is a different product B
Palo Santo Fragrance Oil 2 100 32% No — a different oil is a different product B
Fresh Strawberries Fragrance Oil 1 50 16% No — a different oil is a different product C
Spicy Raspberry Fragrance Oil 1 40 13% No — a different oil is a different product C

Four materials land in tier A: the wax (100% of output), the White Matte jar and its Thick C2 wick (71%), and the wick stickers (100%). Tier B holds the tin and its wick and the two oils used in two SKUs each. Fresh Strawberries and Spicy Raspberry, each in one SKU, are tier C. Two things are missing from that table that belong in tier A as well: the scale and the thermometer. Neither is consumed, but if either breaks, every pour stops — the answer there is a spare, not a number of days. Notice too that combining by material raises a line's tier: a jar shared by four SKUs is one stock line, as the one-jar post shows, and an oil shared by two products is one bottle, as in the one-oil post.

The "most expensive first" instinct: "keep extra of the costly oils." The dearest materials feel like the riskiest, but cost and stoppage are different questions. A slow, expensive single-SKU oil is the worst thing to hold extra of — it ties up cash and stops almost nothing if it runs short. Fix: rank by share of output stopped, then decide days of cover. Shared wax versus a slow oil works through exactly this contrast.

Step 2: days of cover by tier

Safety stock is days of use, not a percentage of the order.

Express safety stock as days of normal use — it scales with the business automatically. This page uses labelled example tiers: A = 14 days, B = 7 days, C = 0 days (tier C lines simply run on their reorder points). Daily use comes from the month's need with allowances — one QC candle per SKU, an example 3% reject rate, 4% pour loss on wax and oil, 2% breakage on glass. Safety stock sits on top of the stock you hold to cover your supplier's lead time; that lead-time cover is the subject of separate reorder points per material, since CSI publishes no lead times.

Spicy Raspberry Fragrance Oil C 716 g 23.9 g 0 0 g ₹0.00
Total held ₹26,866.27
For comparison: 14 days of every line 14 ₹35,523.41

The tiered buffer holds about ₹26,866.27 of material; fourteen days of everything would hold ₹35,523.41 — ₹8,657.14 more, almost all of it in the oils and the tin line, none of which would stop more than two-fifths of output. The wax buffer is the largest single line, about 24.5 kg of CSI 464; that is what protects every candle you make. Wicks and stickers are tiny in value and enormous in consequence, which is why they sit in tier A with a full 14 days. Glass is the one tier A line that also breaks in storage, so its buffer carries its own breakage — buffer for glass versus wax and oil explains the difference — and if a large order might need emergency remakes, the remake-inventory post sizes that separately from safety stock.

Re-tier when the range changes
Add a SKU that uses the tin and the tin's share of output rises; drop a jar SKU and the Thick C2's share falls. Re-run the share column every time you add or drop a SKU, and whenever a festive plan shifts the mix. The reorder sheet has a column for tier and safety days.

Step 3: build the buffer once, in real packs

Safety stock is built once and then maintained: every regular order replaces what you used, and the buffer stays on the shelf, rotated first-in-first-out so it never ages. The build below rounds each tier A and B line to the cheapest in-stock CSI packs and adds a spare Pen Thermometer and Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00 each). Tier C lines are not on it.

Three rounding notes. CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo in 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg bags, so the cheapest cover for the wax buffer is 2 × 10 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g — the 500 g bag is ₹520.00 a kilo, so it is only used to land on the need. The Thin C1 10-pack was out of stock on the 4 October 2026 re-check, so small wick buffers start at 20. Neroli and Palo Santo are priced linearly from 100 g up (₹6.66/g and ₹6.02/g), so their buffers sit in 100 g, 50 g and 15 g bottles rather than a 500 g bottle that would hold far more than seven days.

The forgotten buffer: "we keep safety stock, but we used it last month." A buffer that is spent and not rebuilt is not a buffer. Fix: treat safety stock as a fixed quantity on its own shelf or in its own labelled bags. When you dip into it, the next regular order includes the top-up — the consolidated monthly order checks it every month.

Buy now, buy after testing

Only approved materials belong in safety stock — a buffer of something you have not tested is not protection. The natural next step for a business that worries about its shared wax is a qualified backup: a second wax that has passed in your formula and could be switched to if the first were unavailable. That is a test, not a purchase. Buy Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1 kg (₹599.00) for a side-by-side trial at your 8% load against CSI 464 — its page states a 13% ceiling, so 8% is inside it — and only if it passes your burn, throw and appearance checks write it into your approved-materials list. Do not stock 10 kg of an untested backup.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A supplier would happily sell you two weeks of every material as "safety stock". On this range that is ₹35,523.41 held against ₹26,866.27 for the tiered approach — and the difference is mostly oils and the tin line, each of which would stop two SKUs or fewer if it ran short. Hold the buffer where a stock-out stops the line; let single-SKU oils run lean on their reorder points — the cash-locked-in-stock post shows what that frees up. Setting safety stock for your own range

1
List every material and toolWax, oils, wicks, stickers, containers, dyes, moulds — and the scale, thermometer and melter every pour depends on.
2
Count the candles each one touchesShare of monthly output that would stop if it ran out.
3
Ask whether anything could stand inOnly a material you have already tested in that formula. Usually nothing.
4
Tier and assign daysYour own thresholds and days; this page uses A ≥ 50% → 14 days, B 20–50% → 7 days, C → none (labelled).
5
Build it once, in real packsOn its own shelf, rotated first-in-first-out.
6
Top it up through the regular orderAnd re-tier whenever the range changes.

The next post, shared wax versus a slow oil, compares two extremes side by side; different lead times adds the lead-time cover that sits underneath safety stock; and ordering for 20% growth shows how a cover grows with the business. The whole pipeline is on the cluster hub.

Hold the buffer where the stock-out hurts, not where the invoice is biggest.

Frequently asked questions

What is safety stock in candle making?
Material held beyond what you expect to use before your next delivery, to cover a late delivery or a demand spike. It is best set as days of normal use, per material.
Which candle supplies should I never run out of?
The ones every SKU (or most of them) depends on and that cannot be swapped without a retest: the main wax, main container, its wick, wick stickers, and working scales and thermometers.
Should I keep safety stock of every fragrance oil?
Usually not. An oil in one SKU stops only that SKU, and slow oils tie up cash. Give oils shared by several SKUs a short buffer and let single-SKU oils run on their reorder points.
How many days of safety stock should I keep?
Your choice by tier; this page uses labelled examples of 14 days for materials that stop most of output, 7 days for those that stop a group, and none for single-SKU lines.
Does soy wax go bad in storage?
CSI's page for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage. For other waxes, check the product page or ask on WhatsApp, and rotate buffer stock first-in-first-out.
Can I use a different wick if my usual one runs out?
Not without a burn test in that container. CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart and no equivalence between wicks, which is why the wick in your main container belongs in tier A.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Allowances are applied in one order — test candles as whole candles, reject allowance by dividing by (1 − reject rate), pour loss on wax and oil only, breakage on glass only, then rounding up to listed in-stock CSI packs — and no allowance is applied twice. The 200 g White Matte fill is the reader's weighed fill; the 85 g tin fill is published. CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights except the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g) and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g wax capacity), no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no throw or burn-test data, no lead times, no volume discount and no 25 kg or 100 kg pack; container soy bags stop at 10 kg and Natural Soy Pearl goes to 50 kg. CSI 464's 10% ceiling, 80–90°C working range and 60-month shelf life and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' 13% ceiling are as CSI's product pages state them. The range, units, QC candles, 3% rejects, 4% pour loss, 2% breakage, tier thresholds and safety days are labelled examples. Costs exclude lids, labels, packaging, labour, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
