Why Can I Smell My Candle Cold but Not When It Is Burning?

Is the oil at fault? Rarely, and it is the dearest thing to blame. An oil that scents a closed jar is clearly in the wax; the question is whether the candle can deliver it.
What is the free fix? Re-light the same candle and log it at minute 15, hour 1 and hour 3, then measure the pool with a steel rule. If the pool has not reached the glass by hour three, you have a wick problem wearing a fragrance costume.
What is the paid fix? One wick size up at ₹5.90 to ₹9.44 a wick, or a heavier anchor in the blend — a base-led oil such as Santal Noir or Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) at ₹87.55 and ₹86.02 of oil per 120 g candle.
Two machines, one jar
Describe what physically happens. Unlit: the top of the candle is solid wax at whatever your room is — high twenties for most of the Indian year. Molecules volatile enough at that temperature leave the surface, and with a lid on they have nowhere to go, so over days they build up in the trapped air. A customer lifting that lid receives the accumulated headspace in one breath: impressive, and not a measurement of what the candle delivers per hour.
Lit: a flame melts a shallow bowl of wax around the wick. Fragrance dissolved in that molten layer evaporates from its surface; fragrance still held in the solid wax below cannot. The releasing surface is the pool, the temperature is the pool's, and the destination is a room with thousands of litres of moving air rather than a few millilitres of headspace. A candle can be excellent at the first job and mediocre at the second without anything having gone wrong in the pour.
So "it smelled amazing in the jar" is not evidence in an argument about hot throw. The two tests differ in every variable that matters — surface, temperature, air volume, air movement and time — and the useful question is never "does this oil smell strong?" but "which of those five is letting me down?"

The thin layer, in grams and rupees
Take a 120 g candle at an 8% load: 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil, distributed evenly if you added at the stated temperature and stirred properly. Pour it into a Purple Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid, whose page states 120 gm capacity, 6 cm diameter and 6.5 cm height. Allow headspace and the wax column is roughly 5.5 cm deep.
Now light it. The pool that forms is a few millimetres deep. Because the jar has a constant cross-section, the fraction of the candle's oil inside that pool is simply the fraction of the column's height that the pool occupies. A 5 mm pool is 0.5 ÷ 5.5 = 9.09% of the column, so it holds 9.09% × 9.6 g = 0.87 g of fragrance. Everything else — 8.73 g, or 91% of what you paid for — is still solid and not participating.
That is not a fault — it is why a candle burns for hours instead of gassing off in one. But it reframes the complaint. When a candle "does not smell", the interesting number is rarely the 9.6 g on the recipe card; it is the fraction of that 9.6 g the pool can present. The two levers on that fraction are pool width and pool depth, and both belong to the wick, the jar and the burn duration. Neither belongs to the bottle.

Reading your own pyramid for the gap
A fragrance oil is a blend of materials with different volatilities. Perfumery calls that structure a pyramid — top, heart, base — and while the labels are commercial rather than scientific, they are a useful proxy for "leaves quickly", "leaves next" and "leaves slowly". 88 of the 107 CSI fragrance-oil pages state a full three-tier pyramid and 14 more state a single-note profile. That published structure predicts the shape of your problem better than any adjective on the same page.
The logic runs one way. A cool solid surface preferentially releases the lightest materials — the top — so a blend whose character lives there produces a cold jar that punches above its weight. A warm pool spends those same materials faster; what carries hours two and three is the heart and base. A page that calls its base very subtle is describing a design decision, and telling you where your candle will run out of things to say.
Read the quotes below as forecasts. They are verbatim from the product pages and the right-hand column is the expectation they set up — not a measured result, but the reasoning a maker should do before buying a kilo.

One honest caveat about the pages themselves: five of the 107 oil pages state no note or profile block at all, and 14 more state a profile without splitting it into tiers. If your oil is one of those you cannot run the forecast above, which makes the burn log below your only evidence rather than an optional extra.
The four-reading burn log
This complaint persists because it almost always rests on one unstructured impression. Run the following instead, on a candle you have already made, before buying anything. Score smell on a blunt scale — 0 absent, 1 faint at arm's length, 2 obvious at arm's length, 3 obvious across the room, 4 obvious from the doorway — and write the number down as you smell it, not afterwards.
The fix path, cheapest first
With the log in front of you, the order of work is decided by what a wrong answer costs. Two of the five moves below are free, one costs a wick, and only the last two put a permanent line on your bill of materials. Costs are per 120 g candle at 8%, CSI live pricing, September 2026.

These three span the structure question rather than being ranked. Per-candle oil cost assumes a 120 g candle at 8% — 9.6 g of oil, 110.4 g of wax — at 1 kg rates. Quoted notes, loads and flash points are verbatim; where a page states nothing, this guide says so instead of filling the gap.

Write the gap down or argue about it forever
The last step is administrative, and it decides whether you solve this once or every quarter. Keep one sheet per scent per jar diameter: the wax and pack, the measured load as a share of the finished candle, the add temperature and stir time, the wick code, the jar's stated diameter, the pour date, the cold score, and the four burn scores with pool measurements beside them. Fourteen fields. It fits on a postcard.
The reason to bother is that this fault has three causes with three different fixes, and without a sheet you will apply them in combination. A maker who changes the wick, extends the cure and swaps the oil in the same month and finds the candle improved has learned nothing purchasable. One variable per batch, recorded at the bench, is the whole method.
Record the shape of the curve, not a verdict. If your log shows a candle that is quiet at minute 15 and strong at hour two, that is a characteristic and it belongs on the care card: a customer told "this one takes about half an hour to open up" reads a slow build as sophistication, while the same customer told nothing reads a candle that does not smell.
