Why Does Candle Wax Crack?

If you are asking why candle wax cracks, the answer is almost always temperature. Wax contracts as it cools, and cracking happens when that contraction occurs too fast or unevenly for the wax to accommodate it. The single most common cause is cooling the candle too quickly: in front of a fan, under air conditioning, or in a fridge or freezer to speed up setting. The second most common is pouring too hot, which increases the total shrinkage the wax must absorb. Other causes include pouring into a cold jar or mould, exceeding the wax's fragrance load, temperature swings during storage, and using a harder wax such as pillar wax or beeswax, which crack more readily than soft container waxes. Almost every cracked candle we get asked about was cooled in a hurry. The maker poured beautifully, then wanted to see the result, so the candle went in front of a fan or into the fridge. Wax does not object to being cooled. It objects to being cooled faster on the outside than the inside, because the outer layer sets and stops moving while the inner wax is still shrinking underneath it. Something has to give, and it is the surface.

Cracking looks like a defect in the material, which is why makers so often blame the wax. It is almost never the wax. Every candle wax contracts as it cools, and every candle is therefore under some internal stress as it sets. Whether that stress shows up as a crack depends on how fast it cooled, how hot it was poured, what it was poured into, and what else you added. All four are within your control, and the fixes below are mostly free.
The physics, briefly
Wax occupies more volume hot than cold. As a candle cools from pour temperature to room temperature, it shrinks, and that shrinkage has to go somewhere. In a well-behaved candle it is absorbed gradually across the whole body of wax as it sets evenly from the outside in, and you see it only as a slight dip around the wick.
Problems begin when the outside sets much faster than the inside. The surface hardens into a fixed shell while the wax underneath is still liquid and still shrinking. The inner wax pulls away, the shell has nothing to follow it down into, and the stress resolves as a crack, a sinkhole, or a hollow cavity under an apparently perfect top.
This is why every fix in this guide amounts to the same principle: reduce the difference in cooling speed between the outside and the inside of the candle. Pour cooler, cool slower, warm the vessel, avoid drafts. Nothing more complicated than that.
Seven causes, ranked by likelihood
In roughly the order they turn out to be the actual problem. Work down the list.
Fans, air conditioning, open windows, and above all putting candles in a fridge or freezer to speed up setting. This last one is common among beginners impatient to unmould a pillar, and it is close to a guaranteed crack. Indian workshops are particularly prone because a ceiling fan is usually running by default and the maker does not think of it as a cooling source.
The hotter the wax when it goes into the vessel, the further it has to cool and the more total contraction the candle must accommodate. Pouring soy at boiling-adjacent temperatures rather than the recommended 75–80°C dramatically increases cracking, sinkholes and surface flaws. A thermometer solves this permanently and costs almost nothing.
Hot wax hitting a cold glass jar or metal mould sets instantly where it touches the surface while the centre stays liquid, which is exactly the uneven-cooling condition that produces cracks. Common in North Indian winters and in air-conditioned workshops where jars have been sitting in the cold. Warming vessels slightly before pouring eliminates it.
Harder waxes crack more readily than soft container waxes because they have less give. Pillar wax, beeswax and paraffin all crack more easily than a soft container soy. Using container wax in a mould creates the opposite problem, sticking and tearing on release. Match the wax to the format: Soy Pillar Wax for moulds, a container wax such as Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for jars.
Exceeding the wax's rated load means the surplus oil never binds into the wax matrix, which interferes with how the wax crystallises as it sets and can produce surface cracks alongside oily patches and pooling. Check your wax's maximum: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated to 13%, while many standard soy waxes cap at 6–10%.
The cause behind cracks that appear days or weeks after a perfect pour. Wax expands and contracts with ambient temperature, and repeated cycling stresses the surface. Indian conditions are demanding here: an air-conditioned room at 22°C and an afternoon balcony at 40°C, or a hot delivery van followed by a cool shop. Store finished candles somewhere temperature-stable and out of direct sun.
Every melt-and-set cycle is another opportunity for uneven cooling. Candles that have been partially burned, allowed to set, then burned again often develop surface cracks in normal use, and re-melting a failed batch to re-pour it can carry the same problem into the new candles. Not usually a manufacturing issue, but worth knowing when a customer reports it.
Which crack do you have?
Where the crack appears and when it appeared usually identifies the cause without guesswork.
Cracks spreading outward from the wick
The classic fast-cooling signature. The wax around the wick is the last to set, so contraction stress concentrates there and releases outward. Almost always means the candle cooled too quickly or was poured too hot. Cosmetic, and usually fixable with a gentle surface re-melt.
Fine surface cracks across the top
Usually a mild version of the same problem, sometimes combined with a slightly excessive fragrance load. Purely cosmetic and the easiest to fix, since a light pass with a heat gun re-melts the top few millimetres and the surface resets smooth.
Cracks running down into the candle body
More common in pillars and harder waxes. Often accompanied by a hollow cavity underneath, which you can detect by tapping the surface and listening for a dull hollow sound. Structural rather than cosmetic, and usually needs a top-up pour rather than a surface re-melt.
Appeared days or weeks after pouring
If the candle set perfectly and cracked later, the pour was not the problem. This is storage: temperature cycling, direct sunlight, or a hot van followed by a cool room. Fix the storage conditions rather than the recipe, and check where your finished stock is being kept.
Quick check: tap the surface gently. A dull hollow sound means there is a cavity beneath and the candle needs a top-up pour, not just a surface fix.
Cracked wax vs cracked glass
These are entirely different problems and it matters that they are not confused. One is cosmetic. The other is a safety issue.

Fixable, not dangerous
Cracks in the wax surface or body affect appearance and sometimes burn evenness, but they do not make a candle unsafe. Most can be repaired with a gentle surface re-melt or a top-up pour, and candles with minor hairline cracks burn perfectly well. Fix the cooling process for future batches and the problem stops recurring.

Stop using immediately
A cracked or chipped jar is a genuine hazard and must never be burned. Common causes are burning for more than four hours at a stretch, an oversized wick overheating the glass, burning down to the last centimetre of wax, or using glass that is not heat-resistant. Extinguish, let it cool completely, and do not relight. Use only containers intended for candles.
How to stop candles cracking
Work down this list in order. The first three solve the large majority of cracking problems and cost nothing but patience.

Never cool candles artificiallyNo fridge, no freezer, no fan, no air conditioning, no open window. This single change fixes more cracking than everything else combined. Setting a candle should be boring and slow.

Pour at the right temperatureUse a thermometer, not judgement. For soy, add fragrance at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C. Pouring hotter increases total shrinkage and with it the chance of cracking.

Let candles set undisturbed at stable room temperatureChoose the most temperature-stable spot you have, away from doors, windows and direct sun. Do not move the candles while they are setting, and do not check them by touching the surface.

Warm your jars or moulds slightly before pouringEspecially in North Indian winter or an air-conditioned workspace. Room-temperature or gently warmed vessels reduce the thermal shock that sets the outer layer prematurely.

Can you fix a cracked candle?
For hairline and surface cracks, a heat gun on a low setting held well back will re-melt the top two or three millimetres, which then resets smooth. Move continuously rather than holding it in one spot, and stop as soon as the surface goes glossy. Let it cool slowly afterwards, or you will simply recreate the original problem.
For deep cracks with a cavity underneath, a surface re-melt only hides the problem. Instead do a top-up pour: melt a small quantity of the same wax, let it cool to slightly below your normal pour temperature, and pour just enough to fill the void and level the surface. Use the same wax and the same fragrance load, or the repaired section will burn and smell differently from the rest.
For a batch that cracked identically across every candle, do not repair them one by one. That is a process problem, and the whole batch can be melted down and re-poured with corrected temperatures and cooling. Wax is reusable, so the loss is your time rather than your materials.
Do not attempt to repair a candle in a cracked or chipped glass jar. The wax can be melted out and reused, but the vessel must be discarded. No cosmetic repair makes damaged glass safe to burn.
Sell it, or remake it?
If you are producing for customers, the practical question is which cracked candles can still go out.

Using the fridge to speed up settingOverwhelmingly common among makers wanting to unmould a pillar quickly. The temperature differential between the fridge and the still-warm centre of the candle is exactly the condition that produces cracks.The fix: Never refrigerate or freeze a setting candle. Pillars need patience, not cold. If you need faster turnaround, pour more candles at once rather than cooling each one faster.

Pouring in a room with the fan runningAn Indian workshop almost always has a ceiling fan on, and most makers do not register it as a cooling source at all. Working tip: how to confirm cooling is your problem in one batch
Pour four identical candles in one session, same wax, same fragrance, same jar, same pour temperature. Leave two in your normal setting spot with your normal conditions. Put the other two somewhere still, shaded and temperature-stable, with no fan or air conditioning, and do not touch them for twenty-four hours.
If the second pair sets clean and the first pair cracks, you have your answer and no wax purchase was needed. This test costs one batch and settles a question that otherwise sends makers through three suppliers. If both pairs crack, move down the causes list to pour temperature and fragrance load before you consider changing wax.

Not inherently. Softer container waxes generally have more give and tolerate contraction better than harder waxes, so pillar wax, beeswax and paraffin tend to crack more readily than a soft container soy. The bigger factor by far is process rather than wax type: any wax cooled too fast or poured too hot will crack, and any wax cooled slowly at a stable temperature usually will not.
Why do my pillar candles crack more than my jar candles?
Pillar candles are made from harder wax with less give, they cool from all sides rather than being insulated by a jar, and makers often chill them to speed up mould release, which is a direct cause of cracking. Use a wax formulated for the format, such as Soy Pillar Wax, cool slowly at room temperature without refrigeration, and expect to do a top-up pour once the first pour has mostly set.
Can too much fragrance oil cause cracking?
Yes. Fragrance oil beyond the wax's rated maximum does not bind into the wax matrix and interferes with how the wax crystallises as it sets, which can produce surface cracks along with an oily film and pooling around the wick.
